In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played. Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges. In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris. As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters. Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 10,000 attendees. Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 100 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next? ecstasyoforder.com thectwc.com - Hry

Despite so much changing in the competitive scene over the past year, Joseph continues to prove why he is a contender.

Joseph is now entering a different phase of life (college) and still adapting to his new environment, yet he still masterfully wins his bracket with little challenge (all due respect to Benjy) and gets the #1 seed in the Top 8.
You'd be a complete fool to count him out, like I've seen many comments say.
he might not be the most optimal player right now in good conditions but when it comes to adaptation to bad patterns and droughts he really shines above the rest
Sad to hear Joseph say he's not at his peak anymore. But he's still so incredible! Love to watch him play!
Not at his peak?
He's #1 seed in the Top 8, in the most competitive CTWC in history.
You don't know what you're talking about!
@@Alvin_Vivian Isnt he third seed?
@@seanscott1308 Top 8 is reseeded based on bracket performance.
@@Alvin_Vivian oh I get it, thanks!
It’s probably because he doesn’t play as much, but he’s never not been a top 5 player since 2018
Joseph is having the Jonas aura tbh, his stacking is just flawless. He's comfortable maintaining his stack and just wait his opponent to make a mistake topping out. It's just like Jonas the last time he won the tcwc
Rip to Jonas man he’s the face of Tetris wish he was still here…
Joseph's demeanour did a 180 when they mentioned Jonas... RIP legend😔
yeah i actually felt like i was watching peter parker when they ask him about tony stark
I remember the night we found out Jonas had died. I immediately went to Joe's Twitch stream and he was a wreck, like many of us. Jonas was like a 2nd father to him.
Time stamp?

Joseph still pulling some of the best burn sequences in ctwc history. Glad to see him play still.
The young players are on another level, but honestly I miss the old guys!…
Same I miss seeing Jonas, Harry, Jeff, etc. on stage. Luckily we still have Quaid and Koryan who can somewhat compete with the younger competition.
Joseph's still there tho
@@NewTears1 jonas died tho
@@monke7566 he prolly knows
24:15 how did joseph make such a quick dicision?! it’s just amazing watching this guy play. too good.
while scratching his nose too, then his right arm just instantly zipped down.
this is a testament to why joseph is #3 seed. with how WELL benji played every freaking game, AND joseph getting droughted CONSTANTLY over and over, but not messing up and keeping his stack alive to clutch the win ONCE benji made a single mistake. its really impressive.
benji played so freaking good too its just insane how it turned out.
Nice haha I've always liked how expressive Joseph is when he's playing
Seeing the great Joseph losing his touch a bit after defeating the G.O.A.T. 7x champion himself Jonas (RIP that wonderful man...) three years later makes me sad, but at least he proved he is still a powerful player at NES Tetris.
36:52 That was some awesome move by Joseph there
These players are insanely good. Growing up I always thought I was pretty good at Tetris but these players are just incredibly skilled and that Hand-Eye coordination is out of this world
It was nice seeing Benjy play at such a high caliber I’m now a fan!
Great to see Joseph back!
Benjy really almost sweeped that first set against a two time champ. Two late top outs at got him. Really good impression to make, hope to see him this year.
Commentator seemed a bit biased for benji but solid game play.
The underdog (this case lower bracket) receiving encouragement is pretty normal, and probably more fun.
Did they stop syncronizing the Tetromino-RNG? If yes, why?
RNG synchronization is only occurring at top 8 b/c that requires specialized carts that would be a nightmare to ship to 64 people all over the world.
@@melodywawichi802 Ah nice! Thanks for the quick response!
@@nubplaisgaims8250 There's also the fact that these cardridges simply don't exist in big numbers. There's only a handful, not enough for all players to begin with
So bizar chef john takes the time in between dishes to commentate on these matches. Luv ya chef john
Joseph still a force to be reconned with but new younger players with rolling technique are creeping up on him.
Joseph Is the Best
Don't you mean BEAST?!? JAJAJA
This is really cool i have been watching a lot of battles and tried to get in to it myself. i got the nes emultor and rom but i can only start at level 9 max?, pretty hard i am getting a bit better but man i got respect for these super players!. my controller is not good its d pad is not responsive enough. just to ask if i would want to play pro tetris where could i get a propper nes controller?
you can press A + start to add 10 levels to your starting level and access 10-19
Hello please put on the CZcams Channel the Jonas Tribute and the discussion between the commentators that happened before the final ! I really liked what the commentators said about Jonas and everybody must to see it. Thank you!
Джозеф, поздравляю с победой. Желаю победы в Гранд финале.
I think… I might choose this as my next and true Competitive Game to go to, I’ve had problems on past games in attempting Competitive Gaming.
I love joseph is playing tetris tournaments like 3 or 2 years and lost like 2 times or 1 lmao
I miss watching Jonas play Tetris. R.I.P. Jonas!
If there's a filipino here, Joseph looks a lot like Arnel Pineda.
Saelee(Sae+Lee) is Chinese/Thai surname.
I'm telling yall with Joseph, slow and steady wins the race
i was so pissed this game because of the droughts
BOOM Tetris for Joseph!
@13:20 Benjy's tetris made a regular clear sound, and didn't do the tetris flash. weird?
This is likely an artifact of the system used to enhance the boards; it uses image recognition to reconstruct the game iirc, and it probably just misread the clear animation
why aren't they playing on the same seed?
Is Chen doing commentary ??
I have heard him commenting some matches. Its not ctwc without james chen, i hope to see him at the grandfinals
Yes. I believe he does the top 8
The blocks Joseph was getting was not even fair he had mad 30's 40's and even almost 50 peice droughts and Benji barely gets any
That was a solid game ... seen better but still solid matches
Where is JANI?
I forget the guys name who beat him
Tetriiisss triiss triis tris...
not anymore..
I wish my dad could pull out like Benjy can.
Is Joseph still playing and has he adapted to rolling?
Joseph is busy with college
Sorry Benjy...no hate!
I think the greentea was a shout out to the player GreenTea
I wish the top 8 jospeh match that would have been better
If Joseph would’ve threw a game in his bracket he would’ve had a far better chance to reach the finals
gg joseph
Ez joseph win
not really benjy played very well
I like jophes
Joseph is like using dr alvin or brilliant skin rejuvinating soap😁tie up your bangs joseph it block your sight ,
Yeah, they need to figure out how to give players the same piece order. Joseph got shafted by rng the first three rounds.
They do, but not before top 8. If it goes offline next year then there will be equal rng.
oh no 27:19
Oh man, B3njy was way too aggressive when he's in the lead. He did great nevertheless.
The commentators really did not do a good job. At 35:30 they don’t even flinch at Josef’s mistake and recovery
They were way too focused on Benji's board.
I agree, it's poor commentary.
Give them a break. They can't focus on both players at one time. I chose one player and I watched him. I can't focus on the other person's game.
Completely agree with you. At that point Benjy's board was super clean too so there was nothing much to look at and they could've at least looked over and check to see how Joseph's doing. But they just seem to be focusing only on Benjy for some reason.
Texas vs china
The commentators made this feel like a seniors bingo match
Boom! Bingo For Benjy!
Well to be honest, this match was hardly close...
I had the same feeling while watching on twitch. I don't know why, maybe they were tired or something. All the other commentary teams brought the hype and energy to improve the experience but Vandy and Tang just didn't seem to have that spark... So weird especially seeing as Vandy always does an amazing job during all the CTM matches. I think this 'tradition' of having Tang and Chen at commentary is hurting CTWC this time around without the live crowd to supply the hype. Chen did great though, as did all the other commentary teams. Vandy should have been paired up with a different partner like Kibi or Bidwell or the best option: Kingsman. When one of the members of the commentary team is low energy, you gotta have a partner to make up for that or have a team that has good chemistry.
@@ipsnagi9442 Yeah I agree, Kingsman and Vandy would be perfect, then Chen and Tang also have good chemistry
The fact that this has 1 dislike
왼쪽사람 진짜 더럽게 못한다..
These are boring without a crowd... Bring back live events
I am wondering why there are no live events like concerts and music festivals are happening with full capacity. Why not this or EVO?
@@scorpioninpink that is not the case worldwide, but there are tetris players from around the world, it would be a pain (perhaps even impossible) for the likes of nenu or koryan to have to go to the us.
(Just my guess, I’m not sure if this is actually the case, but I would guess so)
I bet those bedrooms stink
Joseph win
Hey, no spoilers!
@@peace4myheart Joseph win
I’m in a Tetris loop a5 the moment, its a scary place to be
Joseph is still incredibly skilled and benjy did really well too. Extremely consistent play from both
