With full commentary by Video Game Hall-of-Famer Chris Tang, this match is a real gem for all you Tetris fans out there.
From the CTWC website:
In the 1990 Nintendo World Championship competition, Tetris was the game to beat. The winner, Thor Aackerlund, is still seen by many as the best to have ever played.
Today’s Classic Tetris tournaments are played on that same version of Nintendo Tetris, using original NES game systems, controllers, and Tetris cartridges.
In 2009, a player named Harry Hong became the first to achieve the highest possible score of 999,999 points. Inspired by this achievement, filmmaker Adam Cornelius produced a short film about Harry called “Max-Out”, and launched a Kickstarter campaign to document the world of competitive Tetris.
As word of Adam’s Kickstarter campaign spread, rumors of max-out scores from other Tetris Masters began to surface, threatening the supremacy of Harry’s achievement. With the help of Nintendo World Championship veteran Robin Mihara, Adam searched for all of the Tetris Masters he could find. Jonas Neubauer emerged as an early max-out artist, along with the elusive original champ Thor Aackerlund. The idea of bringing these and other NES Tetris Masters together to compete in a live tournament became an obvious and irresistible proposition which was artfully captured in the 2010 feature length documentary Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters.
Under the leadership of producer Vince Clemente, The Classic Tetris World Championship is currently held at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, an annual event which has hosted the tournament since 2012. Chuck Van Pelt and his organizing committee have built the PRGE into the largest classic gaming expo in the country, drawing around 6,000 attendees.
Every year the scores get higher. Rivalries are revisited once again, and new players emerge to challenge the old guard. Over 20 players have maxed out the score now. Will you be the next?

Thanks for everything Jonas!
Will remember you the most in October during CTWC....
He died from a heart attack? He was so young 😥
@@GiftOfGav93 It wasn't a heart attack. His heart stopped and they don't know why.
@@wingfryer ah okay, yeah I was trying to figure out what happened to him, but the information I found online was pretty vague.
@@wingfryer i just read the comment that the guy died and made a bet for a heart failure as its so incredible widespread this year. What’s happening with people’s hearts?
please more respect to a gaming commentator who actually makes a game of tetris interesting
As the commentator said, Tetris is mentally challenging game and one mistake can cost you a game.
Neck 'n neck!
no
the game is interesting enough
Love that "FUCK YEAH!" at 34.34
Is it just me or is it extremely relaxing to watch Jonas play Tetris?
Sad news. He recently passed away.
BOOOOOOOMMMMM TETRIS FOR JONAS!!!

Samuel Cortez omg my headphones
He bad BOOM before it was cool
that commentator makes me cringe so fucking hard
Mau Cabrera it’s the same commentator. He’s just got a couple years more experience under his belt.
Interesting how everyone has stepped up their game since 2014, both the commentators and the players - and it's mostly the same people, which makes it even more admirable! As if they're pulling each other to greater heights.
Notice, for example, how their custom-written software now shows more clearly the scoring differences (and other player stats), which frees up the commentator to offer his perspective on more interesting things :)
Not to mention the fact that all the display is computer generated in full HD, as opposed to just being captured from the Nintendo screen in 200 or so blurry pixels.
What am I doing with my life? So much to do and I'm watching two guys playing Tetris.

how the hell did I got here??

9:29 wonderful round of applause 👍
Very tactical from Harry. Deliberately getting leads in time to try and put Jonas under pressure then just keeping his decks clear with doubles and triples leaving no room for error.
Robert Matthew Brown worked once in 8 years
Robert Matthew Brown jonas ended up adopting his style of double well
lol not tetrising after the transition almost lost it for him. was pure luck Jonas fucked up and the last game Harry finally threw in a few extra tetrises to keep his lead long enough.
I think it sufficient to say that Jonas could be 8-0 in TWC finals if he didn't have a 54 peice drought going into the transition. I'm so glad they made it so each person gets the same peices it should have always been that way.
He got outplayed by Harry this time
BOOM! Tetris for Jonas!

“We have a new champion!”
“FUCK YEAH”
Counted a 54-piece longbar drought for Jonas in that last game. With true RNG, the odds on that happening are (6/7)^54, or 0.024%. In other words, a drought that long statistically will happen about once every 4000 games.
The 0.024% part is correct though the 1 in 4000 games part isn't. It's much more frequent than that, since each game consists of multiple opportunities to get a 54+ piece drought.
It's like saying "the chance of getting two of the same pieces in a row is 1/7, so that'll happen only once in every 7 games", which is obviously wrong
Which is why it's SO MUCH better now that they seed the same RNG in the tournaments. No bad luck weighing in on the match.
34:34 FUCK YEAH
Hahahahaha
Crazy seeing Jonas going for singles and doubles after the transition, knowing what he's capable of now in 2019
Neck and Neck
Jonas was defeated... the end of the world is near, guys
Look, it wasn't his average game. It was about 25% out of his best capabilities(while 50% being his average).
I don't really play Tetris myself but I watched 2017, 2016, 2015 and now 2014 finals. And even I see that here there was a lot of misdrops for some reason from Jonas and also luck wasn't at his side.
Jonas lost not because he played worse but because of random factors which played deciding role here.
PS B O O M ! T E T R I S F O R J E F F ! ! ! ! ! ! !
No he is playing against Harry which he played in the finals in 2010, 2013 and 2014. Not his average game indeed but not how you described it.
Mr. E It's the comments section, what do you expect? .-.
Alan Ponce Fuck I wandered into the comments halfway through the video
To be fair Jonas went back and won 2015, 2016 and 2017 afterwards and is in the Top 4 currently for 2018. Sure he lost once but he lost to Harry of all people in the FINALS and got 2nd. I'd say 6 Championships and one 2nd Place is pretty damn good 😂
RIP jonas :'c
The only video in existance to feature Harry smiling.
Jonas was such a sportsman letting Harry win like that!
Hasn't let him win since, lol!
yeah this is the worst iv seen him play
Yeah, he's in a different league now, gave up so many tetris' in the higher levels
Drogheda Drones & Fun
U think he let him win? I don't see that at all.
meeg_2005 Harry is that you? It's a mixture of sarcasm and truth, probably difficult to understand. Watch all of the Tetris on CZcams and you'll soon realise Jonas is king.
These guys are crazy!! Insane skills. I met the announcer. He's a cool dude!
The T-placement at 20:56 really screwed Jonas in the third game
Anyone else watching this in 2020 and being both incredulous at and grateful for how far tetris play has come since this final?
YT recommend this to me in 2024 and I thought why not. I still miss Jonas and it's quite interesting to see how far tetris has come with hyper tapping but then especially rolling!
Crazy how the level of play has improved since then. At that time you could win games in the finals with only two or three tetrises between transition and killscreen. Nowadays we have matches in Classic Tetris Monthly routinely going to double maxouts (including dogplayingtetris LOSING a set after maxing out every game in the set). Anything other than full aggression will fall behind your opponent these days.
Ive been watching alot of your videos cuz its really entertaining but this video made me realize how much jonas playing style has changed im so excited cuz im actually getting an nes this christmas with tetris lol its all thanks to your videos so keep it going guysss
I am not good at Tetris but I LOVE watching these videos. So exciting. Interesting to see how the skill level has increased from this video to the most recent.

Not gonna lie, I was definitely rooting for Harry on this one. He's like the angry villian that always gets beaten.
Posting the 2014 championship match in 2017... Hmmmm
Brian Billman I've watched the original version of the video today, and I can say this one is way better
I sometimes wish this style of the CTWC competitions would show up again. Brings back memories.
RIP Jonas, you will not be forgotten!
Thats the happiest I seen Harry like ever.Great win.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
Tetris for Jonas!
Crazy how tetris is way more competitive now (2019-2020) compared to 5 years ago. This was considered one of the highest score finals with 600k score while now when the top 5 players play against each other 600k is like nothing. And the competition keeps rising, this game didn't even reach its peak time yet
Then there's 2022 championship
it's crazy how much more advanced the play has gotten in the past few years
its a pleasure watching the veterans playing with such compassion. sure rollers are great but we always appreciate great dedication, devotion and skills.
I couldn’t hold back a laugh at the end when someone shouted out “FUCK YES” at the end.😂😂
I remember when this is what we had to rely on when it comes to a win from someone other than Jonas, and I was hoping for another win too. And now here we are with the Joseph Saelee hypertapping/rolling generation building upon the historic 2018 win by Joseph, now with over fifty times the view count of this 2014 win, and more than the 2016 _Boom! Tetris for Jeff_ meme.
Although it is well out of my reach, I agree with the New Yorker that the maxout has turned from a legendarily hard feat to pull off to a rite of passage for newer and younger players like Joseph. The 2014 championship may have created this whole idea but it wasn't until 2018 when it really started to kick off, and even after the untimely passing of Jonas the performance by these new players blows away the performances from the classical 2010-17 generation of Tetris players. That is truly a stellar trend, but this is where it all started. I recommend people to trace it back to this match.
Two more years later. This match feels so underwhelming in retrospect. I watched the 2022 CTWC finals, as well.
"This is the very top level that you'll ever see people play NES Tetris at" That didn't age well.
At the time knowone would have argued, its very bizzare how the game is advancing still.
It's interesting how in 2014, a Tetris past lvl 18 was something special and they opted more for doubles and triples to play it safe. Nowadays you have to bang down tetrises all the way from lvl 18 to lvl 28 in order to to keep up.
I’m glad they improved on the screen layout, since this year xD
Trey’s software is really genius.
This commentator is the shit.
the game was so tense the caster forgot to cast :v
Quinn Culver 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Quinn Culver Remove "the" in your sentence, then I will 100% agree with you.

Amazing how the meta of this game has changed these last years.
Jonas real gentleman clapping hands for harry
Legend has it they are still looking for Paul Frank to this day
Why am I happy and sad at the same time?
Also RIP Jonas you will always be remembered as the 7-time world champion of tetris and one of the GOAT at gaming history
We wanna see Harry Hong win again!!! Can he do it one more time vs. all the new challengers?
Near the end of the final game, you can hear Amish paradise in the background lmao
The legendary upset, I finally found it!
The "BOOM Tetris" has derived from Doug's "BOOM Headshot" in the Pure Pwnage series. Good stuff!
Jonas' defeat is so unfortunate but Harry deserves win. Cuz he is in 2 finals before 2014 (2010 2013) in 2013 he lost from 2-0 lead
I have been watching a lot of tetris videos rooting for someone to beat Jonas. I found this video and for the first time I supported him and he lost, like wtf. I have watched like 15 games, and in all the games, the player I supported lost!
Thats because Jonas only lost 1 time :D
Philip, that's no longer true :(
@@jasondoe2596 2019 now and Jonas lost on the first round. Rip

8:45 rare moment of Harry having emotions
Over the course of the first eight CTWC tournaments, Jonas won 38 matches and lost one.
I cried a little when Jonas lost
A1ru dont worry he won 2015 and 2016 :3
Me too :'( ...no tetris for Jonas this time
Atila Eternauta well he won 2017 as well lol Amazing player
Latest news: Jonas disqualified fot using EPO
Î'm glad that in today's format, both players are given the same blocks each game, so that the disadvantage of only one player having a drought like jonas had in game 4 (which basically robbed him the chance of coming back) doesn't occur anymore. Nevertheless, gg and congrats to Harry :)
I feel like the commentators have improved just as much as the players over the years
Man the CTWC has evolved.
I just got into watching these videos and I wonder, do players hear the loud music and commentary or are they in a seperate, quiet room? Seems super distracting.
RyanAtlus I think they are near(commentator and players) because I saw the commentator's leg at Harry's cam.
Yes they hear. Jonas has said he reacts to the info that the anoucers say about the game
All players use earphones except Jonas he enjoys listening to the commentators
RyanAtlus *Yeah, the same goes when you’re trying to fap. It’s annoying*
@@monynhem7598 Boom!
This was before they were able to get both players to have the same block drops right? Since I felt Jonas and Harry both had some droughts the other never experienced.
Okay I know I'm completely late but seeing these comments really rub me the wrong way. Am I the only one who just really wanted Harry to win? He was/is the underdog who finally got to win!!! Don't get me wrong I love Jonas, he's a beast but seeing Harry win meant everything to me! It kinda gives me hope for other players, although Jonas is the best it doesn't mean he's unbeatable.
is it bad that i got sad that jonas lost?
Izzious we all know we got sad when jonas lost☹️
I always root for Jonas too but poor Harry needed one win
He couldn't beat saitama.
The genie code that gives both payers the same pieces wasn't made back then? They did a great job updating that and the display.
Oh my god, the song at the beginning of the second round has me crying. It fit so perfect! hahahahaha ^-^
that guy who is speaking looks like he always needs to pee
This is Jonas’s first evar tournament loss
Wow Chris was really enthusiastic back then wow also. BOOM TETRIS FOR EVERYONE
brutal drought for Jonas in the last game. I've seen some of these videos where they very the same shapes. is that the norm these days?
Modern championships have same seed for shape generator. In older champs it didnt though so it was unbalanced :/
I think I counted 53 piece drought. I was hurting for him lol
It’s normal at CTWC since.. I wanna say 2016. Not all tournaments do it, though, the modified carts are not universally available.
Does anyone know why Harry chooses a much faster pace than everyone else? It doesn't seem to benefit him, seeing as he'd be more prone to mistakes, and it doesn't seem like he will score higher since there's a 'death-screen' after a fixed number of lines?
Do they do frame perfect left and right presses?(clicking every 30th of a second)
All time classics before the birth of the prodigy hahahaha
BOOM!! TETRIS FOR JEFF!!
I have a question though, how is this played versus when there is no versus in the original game? I mean you get the players to get the same pieces and you have some versus screen in later episodes. How is this setup and how you sync it to get same drops?
MessiahGaming1080p its a special programme
Scuse can i download in any page this version of tetris?
Strange... Why these two have been eliminated on round 1 (Top 32 match) of 2019 CTWC...?
Boom, Tetris for Jeff happened. That was in 2016 or 17, iirc. And then Joseph saw that and started practicing, and in 2018 he wanted to see if he was good enough to qualify - at which point he beat Jonas in the finals. And *that* fairytale ending got a whole bunch of other people interested. Mind you, Harry and Jonas are both *much* better payers than they were in 2014. But the field is now full of literally dozens of people who could have easily won this final against the 2014 version of Jonas and Harry.
At the same time, the technical underpinnings of the tournament got a lot better (thanks to Trey), which results in much better video quality, and makes the scene more interesting. But, yeah, it’s just like the Guitar Hero scene - people suddenly started getting really good at playing a decades old game when you started to be able to put your practice sessions on twitch and make if not a decent living, at least not really starve doing it.
Harry had the dream seed in that 2nd game.
Interesting, they did not have seeding for the games back then. I just noticed the opening screens have different pieces.
Yeah, it was not until 2016 when the organizers created a modified cartridge that allow for same piece sets.
Harry is insane!!
Floatillyboats But Jonas is better.
