But Diogenes, the 4th-century founder of the School of Cynicism, was a despiser not of people but of a mindless conformity to convention and the thoughtless pursuit of wealth. His goal was to encourage persons, sometimes through shocking tactics, to assert their independence from the herd and reclaim their humanity.
