    Epicurus is one of my favourite philosophers, and I feel his view makes lots of sense. I must say, though, that most of us fear the death of a loved one much more than our own, and he kind of failed to address that...

      Agreed. I always think:"If I lost a loved one, I would appreciate the time I spent with them and be thankful that I had the opportunity to be with them and make them happy", but I don't how I will act if it actually happened.

    When I learn about a new philosopher, there is always some piece of his philosophy that makes me think “huh, this guy is kinda describing how I view the world”
    But holy shit, when you hear some dude condense you’re entire personal philosophy in a few neat sentences…it’s something else.
    Really makes you realize that original thoughts are a non-renewable resource in the age of the internet. You are able to hear the words men who lived over 2,000 years ago, along with the opportunity to discover one who not only had a similar perspective but also the insight to study and explain it.
    It makes me wonder if it’s possible that Epicurus benefitted from a similar breakthrough. Reading some random record of a man who lived a thousand years before him that left him apprehensive to the realization that an ancient man, living in such a simpler time, could have predicted your perspective. The one perspective you think is entirely unique.

    My own notes so I can refer back when I revisit this video in the future:
    Pleasure is the only worthy value; achieved through pleasant conversation and good vibes - Ataraxia, or inner tranquility
    Provides system of guidance consented with living pleasantly. In contrast to Finding objective truth and solving metaphysical puzzles.
    3 claims made by epicurus:
    1. Does not claim to seek pleasure at all times. Instead, epicureanism primarily concerned with reducing pain and reaching ataraxia. Path of happiness achieved by alleviating concerns that cause suffering (let go of irrational fears of death and future. Accept future as being uncertain.)
    2. Value connection. Most important is acquisition of friends. Not so much what friends to do help us, more so about knowing your friends are there to help you if needed
    3. Seek inner peace. Be happy with what you have. Don’t desire things you don’t have. Appreciate pleasant conversation with friends instead. Sober reasoning, challenging unhelpful beliefs.

    Hi, I am a consistent watcher of your videos and my therapist/ councillor has said I need to take my own time to improve my out look on life and my general mental state. This has helped my realise I haven't let myself have emotions, and at that it has made me realise us as humans constant pursuit of happiness and the negative effects on everyone due to this. I would like to ask commenters and you what is your opinion on the constant pursuit of happiness and what are some of the effects (good and bad) that you see?

    • @ShanHasselbank
      @ShanHasselbank Před 3 lety +1

      What does happines mean to you?
      You seem to think it is something to 'pursue' so what does it mean to you?
      (I don't expect (many) things but if a plan I have with others does not go as planned I can get furious, I guess because I was looking forward to it. But mum says: ' don't worry my child, it might be good that that did not happen'. But I don't 'look forward to things'. If I have a personal plan I do work at it until it is complete for me that's 'living'. I sometimes feel lazy but I still do it because I wanna achieve something, not for happines but for achieving something. And in my head everyone is capable of doing anything they think they might want. But most seem to want the end result more than enjoying the ups & downs leading to that end result. Maybe that's what your therapist was speaking about. Focus on your peace, be patient with yourself, drink tea, make up your bed and work on achieving your goals. Things are not 'hard/difficult' they just require time. Make the time & go for it💪 (&please answer the question, I don't need to know the answer but for yourself I think it might give you lightbulb moments). You got this💪

    I'll watch your video a second time.
    The thing I like the most about Epicurus is the Tetrapharmakos. You brought up "Don't worry about death" but the other 3 parts of the "Tetra"-pharmakos (four part treatment) are critically important. Don't fear God, what is good is easy to get, and what is bad is easy to endure. IIRC, the Tetrapharmakos is a brief summation of basic Epicurean beliefs created by the Romans who really liked Epicureanism.
    Diogenes Laertius wrote in his book of eminent philophers a 40 point list of important Epicurean beliefs. You can find it online by searching for Sovran Maxims.

    Any recommendations for good books on Epicureanism? There are a number of excellent books on stoicism by William B Irvine and massimo piggliuccu (not sure if I spelled that correctly) but I’ve yet to find anything similar about Epicureanism.

    Well, sure.. if and when you want to be happy... but I have come so far in life as to not always want to be happy... sometimes I want things to go wrong so that I get stressed and have to figure out how to get past challenges... but anyway.. just my two cents.. good video.

    Ah epicureanism, the version of hedonism with a slight limit on it.

    • @Iamwrongbut
      @Iamwrongbut Před 3 lety +1

      I would say the “limit” is just balance. It takes an utilitarian viewpoint and adds temperance (the stoic virtue) to round out the pursuit of happiness.
