this is why I dont read Nietzsche why is this statement worded the way it is
@@yin8079 I don’t see a problem with the wording. I mean writers and philosophers and scholars naturally write differently as they are exposed to more text and the more text you’re exposed to actually changes your relation to text and how you write. This is why scholarly stuff seems overly verbose. Part of it is definitely a flex. But also when you read that kind of stuff, you start to reflect it. I used to sometimes feel bad about not having goals or ambition, recently I realised my goal is just to be. Now I'm achieving my goal every second of every day and I gotta tell you, it feels good. :D
I lost 90lbs in the past year. I had been fat my entire life and thought it was the only thing I needed to be happy.
All Becoming thinner did was make my demons a lot easier to see but now I’ve been working on what really matters.
Love the videos man, Godbless.
Hope it all works out. God Bless!
I lost weight 5 years ago and I can safely say I do not want to nor will I ever go back to the way I was before. Being overweight sucked big fat balls compared to the shape I'm in now. Losing weight and weightlifting changed my life for the better and I'm thankful I made the decision.
That said I still have a lot to work on personally. I love this quote by Alexis Carrell - “ Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and sculptor.” I think it sums up our existence quite well.
@@franciscoferraz6788 that’s a great quote. The suffering aspect is interesting. I feel that people with an addictive personality have a high capacity for greatness. The void they need to fill is much bigger then others and you can either fill it with things that help you or things that hurt you. I used to eat 4K calories a day and drink a pint of whiskey everyday. Now I’m training for a marathon. It’s weird how life works.
Congrats on the lost weight and new lifestyle. I've been a heavy drinker for 20 years and recently quit. Like you, this was the beginning to becoming a better person rather than the goal. I think these bad habits are an attempt to solve the problem of existence, rather than being the problem itself.

My goal is to follow Epicuru's advices: study stuff (critically) and educate yourself, go to countryside and live self reliant life outside of busy life of cities, and gather around friends to live, eat and have fun with you.

So, I am still listening to the video as I write this. I want to start a business because I want to work for myself. I want to work for myself because I want to be my own boss. I want to be my own boss because I want to be in full control of my work ethic. I want to be in control of my work ethic because I have very often been frustrated by the utter lack of them in my career environment up to now. My career has never been about what I wanted to do, but rather what I could do to earn my keep. I am now studying programming at a polytechnic, I also reduced my living costs by a whole lot, at the same time I plan on creating different streams of revenue, by possibly creating things that I care about, profits don't need to be big, just sized enough to survive and keep learning and creating. After a lot of introspection, and having reached the end of this video as I write, I think I am *not* chasing the wrong goals :)
I hope it works out. Very nice 👍👍

I'm three years into college for a job I seriously don't want, I'm out of energy to pursue even my hobbies, and too scared to change my major. (I have no safety net.) This video told me I'm doing the wrong thing, but what is the right thing to do?
What are you working with? What are your other skills?
i really dont know, we are all kind of spitballing but maybe take a step back to see where you are, where you wanna be, how you feel about the things you do and the things you dont. then reconsider what you can change, the risks, and at the end of the day just make decisions
Hey Alexia, even if Sisyphus did say that you should pursue intrinsic rather than extrinsic goals, this doesn’t mean that you should be giving up something that would potentially save you from poverty (I’m guessing that’s what you don’t have a safety net against). Even in the research that Sisyphus cites it also says “extrinsic aspirations are not necessarily detrimental but may even contribute to well-being”. In your case if you cannot afford to pursue your intrinsic goals, your best option might just be to ride it out and establish a net for yourself so that you have the option to quit whatever you are doing to pursue other things.
We can also do a thought experiment: what would happen if you did give up school and things that you don’t want to do?
What would you have to do if you gave up school to keep living the way you are? Would you have enough time to spend on your hobbies then?
Is there a foreseeable future where you don’t give up school, and still be able to pursue your hobbies?
You could also see if there’s some other career that you do want to pursue without getting into too much student debt. Maybe another program that’d have you take a lot of the same prerequisites that you had for your current degree; something that wouldn’t put you in a lot of debt or take too many extra years.
We’re often encouraged to “follow our dreams” with regards to our careers. As kids we get asked what we want to “be” when we grow up. As though your work “is” you. It implies that your dream should be something that sustains you financially. This is frustrating to me because most of the jobs that society requires to be filled in order to function are not “dream jobs”, however surely someone has to do them. These people are not failures. What if the thing that makes you happy is unprofitable. As a society we need to accept that your career doesn’t define you or the happiness you can get out of your life.
You don’t have to love your career to be happy.
Maybe it’s wise to finish your degree and get that job for the sake of stability seeing as your almost there. And in the meantime keeping your eyes open to anything along the way that makes you happy, profitable or not.
Lol. Philosophy isn't about solutions, it's about compounding problems.
You say "The dangerous trouble behind what is called need-thwarting in which we fail to experience these basic needs is that we can end up with corrupted goals" but what if need-thwarting doesn't result in corrupted goals? What if loneliness leads you to want close meaningful friendships instead of superficial popularity for example? Would that still be outcome based? What if your passionate about something for its own sake but still feel a sense of incompetency when you don't do it perfectly? What if people who are more likely to pursue intrinsic goals grew up in an environment that met their needs and so are less likely to be bogged down by a distorted view of what a sense of fulfilment would look like? The study in the citations looks at what motivates people to exercise and labels those motivations as intrinsic or extrinsic but it doesn't ask the people motivated by extrinsic goals to change their motivations to intrinsic and examine if that would improve their outcomes. I suspect that people with intrinsic goals are more likely to have had their needs met in childhood and so are more likely to be healthier as a result, and that having intrinsic goals in it of itself is not necessarily a marker of positive outcomes but a natural response to having their needs met. I also suspect that transitioning between having extrinsic goals to intrinsic goals is very difficult and would not necessarily lead to our needs being met.
You're right, having your needs met in childhood makes you more likely to adopt intrinsic goals. But having your needs met at any point in time gives you more meaning and happiness, and over time you'll adopt more intrinsic goals even if you are driven by extrinsic goals right now. There's literally hundreds of papers on this in over 40 years of research, their findings are rock-solid!
@@SuperMrMuh can you link or tell how to find them. Examples I mean
Tldr but you should only chase outcomes if you're prepared to fail when things don't materialize the way you expect. Processes are tangible every step of the way. For example, do leg day, not to have buff legs, but because they need exercise, or to challenge yourself. You could lose your legs tomorrow and all your effort to have buff legs would be lost. But you won't lose yourself until you die, and a fulfilling life will make that not matter.
Love the way you've included more "professional" animation in this one. Glad you don't seem to be looking to rid of your homebrew animation style
I love this animation style
On the one hand, I feel a sense of relief to realize that I have been working on many intrinsic goals--I just never considered them as goals before. On the other hand, I've been shaming myself for over a decade at my apparent lack of extrinsic goals and that has had a corrosive effect on many aspects of my life.
I'd say if you really feel like lacking, focus on that part first. Have a nice apartment, living a comfortable life without having to worry about monetary issues and having a decent living conditions is a must first. Pursuing intrinsic goals is important, but only if all your basic needs are covered much like Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
This one was scary, I've been watching your video's for a couple of months now. Only yesterday I realised how by setting the wrong goals I've been swimming against the current for the past 16 years. I feel so dumb for doing so, but i guess also glad

random tip for anyone thinking about fitness goals: do calisthenics, its really fun to do because you learn handstands an what not and in the mean time you reach fitness goals like building muscle amd losing weight. i pesonally do it because i just like learning in general and i am training for the military.
I started calistenics when the pandemic hit and i fucking loved it, now i go to the gym to do weighted calistenics and i cant wait for my next workout! Do what brings you joy
Yeah, until you fuck up all of your joints
@@okplay9446 y do you say that?
@@okplay9446 I do joint workouts within my calisthenics to fuel joint growth. Stronger joints take about 6 months to develop as opposed to quick muscle growth. I used to have consistent knee pain but switched to calisthenics and did knee lifts and raises before leg exercises. This strengthened them overtime and I don't have knee pain anymore. Plus calisthenics is cheap and u can go at your own pace.
@@totallegend2480 Weighted calisthenics = not calisthenics
All of this applies to me and its scary, no this is not a frequency illusion, legit this man knows his audience. I went through a crisis like this during the pandemic basically all my goals were extrinsically based. When I was removed from the world I had nobody to motivate me. I lost all my drive to continue, I have had to build from almost nothing my intrinsic motivation. It was like someone pulled the rug out from under me but instead of hitting the mahogany floor I just kept falling into black. I'm not sure if I hit rock bottom or if I'm still falling, all I know is that it feels like I'm trying to build a helicopter out of scraps that are falling with me in the dark. People really help when I get to talk to them, I am naturally extraverted so I suppose that makes sense. I was going to write," I've got it all figured out and I don't need a soul to affirm me", but that would be a lie. However, it would not be a lie to leave you, the reader, with the notion that I am improving and taking joy in the most minuet of positive inclinations in my progress.

Woah! The editing is next level in this one!
Just had to say THANK YOU. I LOVE this video. Has been topics that I have bounced around in my head and it was mind boggling to have it professionally written into a video what before was only in my head.
I also personally believe that a good reason to strive for intrinsic goals vs extrinsic goals is that at the end of the day extrinsic goals rely on achieving accomplishments that a certain amount of the population haven't achieved. To use the example that you used towards the end of the video, if I am wanting to lose weight in order to look good for other people then I am reliant on the idea that a certain amount of people aren't at the weight I am at. If everyone was at the weight that I wanted to be at then it wouldn't be a goal. Everyone looks like that so nobody would say I look good because everyone looks good. And if everyone looks good then nobody looks good.
But if you want to lose weight in order to be healthy in general. What other people are doing doesn't matter! The whole world could be obese. The whole world could be a bunch of Arnold Schwarzenegger's. Your goal has nothing to do with other people. And there is something beautiful about that. You aren't trying to get the attention of other people.
Really at the end of the day extrinsic goals rely on NOT accomplishing something but more on getting a reaction from people. Meanwhile intrinsic is all you (hence the name). You don't need people to react a certain way in order to become a healthy weight. BUT in order to look good for other people you need other people to think you look good.
And I believe that's a big reason for why the intrinsic goals make you so much happier than the extrinsic goals. I apologize for the rant but watching this video felt like Sisyphus reached into my head and grabbed this topic that I haven't heard anyone else mention and expand upon it in ways that I have only thought in my head but never said out loud.
Never had such a big reality check.Thank you man
Thank you for providing this high quality content for free, your videos really helped me see life in another perspective.
I recently asked myself the question of why am I chasing my goals? For most of my goals I was happy with the reasoning, however the one goal whose answer didn't satisfy me led me down a rabbit hole of self discovery. That goal was working out to get bigger.
I wanted to be the physical embodiment of masculinity so I could be like those I idolise, or rather, those I thought I idolised. There was no clear answer at first apart from "it's what you've always wanted". This answer triggered me to ask if I had actually always wanted this. I thought back as far as I could and while I don't remember the very first time I wanted to get bigger, I was able to identify what point in my life that desire started.
It started when an older friend of mine attempted to sexually assault me. I froze up, a feeling I still despise to this day, and I was barely able to escape. Upon thinking about it more and more over the next few days I could no longer deny my motivation. I wanted to be terrifying. I must have thought if I was no one would ever hurt me again.
After this revelation I then asked what I did want and it's taken a couple months to figure out, but its pretty much the exact opposite. I want to be skinnier, more approachable, in many ways more feminine. I've made people scared before and I hated it, but those encounters weren't enough for me to realise this.
I plan to continue working out, but I'm restructuring it. I'm going to have a focus on health, strength and flexibility as opposed to muscle mass. I'm also going to be a lot less obsessive, focusing on doing exercises I enjoy.
"Why" is such an important question.
Thank you for this we can get trapped very easily in goals like being rich and attractive etc, when we should have goals that span over a large portion of time and that make us enjoy the process 🙏🏻
I fr can’t thank you enough. You’ve literally described me in the video and this made me realize so many things. Just THANK YOU. You might have just made my whole life better.

It's been 3 and a half year now and i'm doing way better than when i was at rock bottom, but i'm still living at my parents house at 21 with no job and i still have social anxiety or whatever it's called in english. I now understand somewhat why i was daydreaming about those things even if i at some point try to stop having those thoughts and that one-liner made me realise that so thank you. I'll try not to focus on these daydreams and just do what's best for me and do my best, not the other's best.

I think that traveling really helps with gaining a sense of perspective outside of oneself and embracing a calmer and more freeing life. Especially for those of us in cities in the united states, which seems to be the most self absorbed areas. And i don’t mean just speeding through hotspots as a tourist, I think really taking the time and relaxing is the way to go (if you can afford it)
I feel like a lot of the things we strive for are motivated by both. For example a dream job that we find fascinating, but at the same time socially rewarding with appreciation and money. In my experience a purely extrinsic goal is never reached, but intrinsic goals rarely pop up on their own. Maybe it's because we are socially somewhat chained to base our goals on social norms rather than the goals that actually make us happy.
Your videos have become the content I enjoy the most in youtube. Your work is beyond greatness
Thanks so much, this video gave me a big insight on why my goals are so high. Very nice video and voiceover. For free content this is near peak, Good job
As always, great video XD
I think everyone likes to think that having lots of money or being successful will make them happy. But if we cannot find happiness within ourselves, then we will continue to remain unfulfilled even if we achieve these extrinsic goals.
Accepting yourself allows you to find those intrinsic goals and feel fulfillment in your life. As long as I am doing that, then I know whatever happens I can continue to move forward 😊

I want to realize I am worth the love my wife has for me. That's been my goal for the last 7 years and I don't feel any closer.
Maybe you don't have to be worth anything you get. Simply accepting that you have it is enough. I'm not saying to take things for granted, but "worth" is a somewhat subjective concept. How would you determine that you're worth someone's love? By your income? By the time you dedicate to them? By your status and therefore difficulty in attaining your attention and companionship? Objectively and over a large number of people maybe (statistically these people may be more likely to succeed if you will), but the answer is really not there I'd say.
If your partner loves you, then they find that you're the right person for them somehow. You can just accept that, then you won't need a reason.
Love is immeasurable and worth has nothing to do with emotions. just keep doing what your doing I’m sure she sees you for you

I love your stuff man, You’re explaining things I always was interested about in a fun and intriguing way! Keep up the good work
Great video but didn't mention the biproduct/positive intrinsic outcomes of superficially "extrinsic" goals. Examples:
- Making significantly more money than your peers - not to feel validation from your peers that you "made it", but rather to have financial freedom to relieve most human restrictions. You can spend a lot more time/try different intrinsic goals when you don't have to keep a job because you need the money nor theoretically work at all.
- Getting into phenomenal, statistically significant better shape than your peers. Extrinsically, everyone thinks you're hot and disciplined. However, you should be motivated by being able to retain your youth and not have to suffer as much from aging as others.
Yeah, I think this video was lazily and poorly made actually and your comment explains it in a way that I thought of myself

Thank you for this!
Yesss I've been writing about exactly this recently. We focus so much on the outcome when really it should only be a metric for what process is being used. I think it's the same in ethics and why I feel religions were so singular minded in their conclusions. So many religious stories were about people who really acknowledged the darkness both in themselves and in the world and they kept struggling through it with faith, honesty and humility and they reach enlightenment, so we put enlightenment on a pedestal when really it's the struggle that is the most important factor
Alright, now it's time for our bimonthly existential crisis, thank you for that
I think everybody has to figure it out for themselves through trial and error but to offer insight from somebody that has obsessed over goal setting for a couple years and managed to find happiness and stability in it here's my approach. This is how I approach every goal. I write down 3 purposes for the goal. I make sure the purposes are primarily intrinsic. I use the SMARTER acronym. Specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound, evaluated, and recorded. I make sure to understand the process that will achieve the goal and find ways to make it enjoyable through gamification, attaching rewards to it, and/or ensuring a strong purpose, routine, and encouragement. The process is likely to change over time until I find something that is stable and enjoyable. Eventually, this process becomes a habit which can be a good thing but without regular reevaluation can become a rut. Once it has a purpose, is SMARTER, and the process of achieving it is well understood and enjoyable you will achieve that goal!
Also, I have found that goals being related to a dimension or multiple dimensions of wellness are very helpful. If you are unfamiliar just google "Dimensions of wellness".
I can’t even begin to explain how much I love your channel. Such informative helpful content while also being entertaining and well explained in a fairly short time( which helps a lot since I have the attention span of a 5 year old)
Thank you for this you’re creating amazing work
Another great video. Thank you!
I aspire to be the one who watches all good tv-shows, movies and especially videogames.
This video shortened: Lower your goals and rethink why
No, rethink your goals and determine whether or not you should lower or change them. Just saying your goals suck now figure out why is bad advice. Absolutism for people you don't even know is dangerous
Please do a follow up or more longer and detailed vid about this. Really need it and this is beyond perfect.
Thank you! This video has really validated the perspective I've been looking at ambition with. Definitely will do more reading into self determinationt heory!
I believe Nietzsche advocated 6 hours of walking a day. Broken up between his studies I would presume. Mind, body and nature connection is the breeding ground for creativity. “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking” -Nietzsche
Wow, the timing! I just noted down something similar to the title in my journal earlier today. From where I'm from, academic pressure is pretty high. For the same reason, I've found myself frequently giving into my addictions. But today I just had enough. The addiction was draining me and I realised it was caused by my unnecessarily exaggerating ideals of academic performance. I decided to fix psychological well being as my ultimate goal
Im in a similar boat. Haven't kicked the addiction yet though
I relate to this comment i've decided to focus on small wins than big academic progress
I like the way you’ve been playing around with your animation style. Great video man!
This dilemma has been inside my mind since I can remember thinking. Thank you for making this video
Learn the bare minimum to keep living
Learn what you can do to that you consider meaningful
Learn that climbing the economic or social hierarchy is a byproduct, and not a good end goal to aim to infinitely approach
Letting yourself be Naive is okay if you know you’re Naive
and if you know how to and make sure
that you and everyone you care about
will still be okay
even if it blows up in your face
Or don’t
It’s 6AM and I can’t really be sure that I’m conscious right now
This feels like a personal attack
I don't see how you don't have more subs, you always leave me with something to think about
didnt know i need this. thank you so much. i hadnt cry in awhile
Damn you for this! Very good, I must eat food.
I hate people and I don't understand money; but I do love art above all.
Can't wait for the day us computer people finally automate _everything_ and just let people do whatever they want for free
You literally made me wake up to life, thank you for making this channel.
loving your content keep it up
Process >> Outcome, when it comes to intrinsic goals.
I just have exams as my only goal right now 🦀.
Every single video of yours that I've ever watched has been exactly what i needed to hear from another persons mouth. Thank you.
I wish i had a video like this 5 years ago. I'm glad I have one now. Thanks dude
But Sisyphus 55, I need to complete my entire living shiny Pokedex!
dude, consider to moderate the volume of your promotions, it is not as loud as the voice of the video exposition
that's good, why would you ever complain about it?
@@Illlium It is to me at least sort of annoying, and since he wants to promote something maybe it is best to do it properly so he gets to expose the product or service better I think. And messing up with the volume of the video is not fun.
@@lmclrain to me it's much more annoying when content creators crank up the volume during ads, but point taken
@@Illlium well it is not about keeping volume balanced, more like how it is presented, If the creator can make something appealing and unique it works just fine. Probably we can compare it with how jumpscares work. They can be fun and they can be annoying.
I recently put a goal. I'm just planning it for now. When I saw the beginning of the video, I paused it and wrote my reasons for that goal. Now after seeing the video, I found that it is an intrinsic goal and I have very good reasons to have it, I'm on the right track. I'm writing this because I wanted to thank you. I've been toxically sceptical for a while and I found competence by this video approving that I'm on right track, in a depressive situation where I question everything I think, every decision I make, where I lost hope and belief in myself, my ideas and my efforts. This was not the aim of the video (bcs I didnt have the wrong goal, it is like the perfect healthy goal) but it helped me gain some belief and determination on my goal, thank you.
I needed to hear this thank you sisyphus
