    I have zero doubt that the score in the prequels is a big part of why fans like me are so forgiving with them. The worldbuilding is imaginative, the music is fantastic, the good moments are great, the bad moments are funny-bad, and the wider narrative is up there with the OT if you can get past its clumsy execution.

      They're both wrong, actually. "Binary Sunset," or whatever you want to call it, is actually (as I see it) the Hero's Journey Theme for ANH. Since ANH was originally just "Star Wars" and it was likely going to be a standalone movie, Williams needed a way to convey Luke's journey throughout the movie. If you think about it that way, the music makes so much more sense in the context of both the Binary Sunset scene and the Throne Room scene: the former represents Luke's longing for adventure and the unknown world, and the latter represents Luke's triumphant return to the known world. It even shows up in other pivotal points for the Hero's Journey, such as Obi-Wan's (the "mentor's") introduction and "the abyss" where every other ship has been destroyed in the trench run and there are more seconds before the Death Star blows ups the Rebel Base. I really don't understand why nobody else sees this.

    • @theenchanter8762
      @theenchanter8762 Před 3 lety +5

      I think it is the Force theme, not necessarily a “Hero’s Journey Theme”

    • @theenchanter8762
      @theenchanter8762 Před 3 lety +12

      Even if the movie was made to be standalone, the Force plays a role throughout the film. It plays when Obi Wan is introduced because he is a Force wielder, an agent of the Force. Much like “Vader’s Theme” is really the Imperial March, but is heard when Vader is on the screen because he is an agent of the Empire. One could argue that the Force theme could also play for Vader, but it could also be said that Vader’s allegiance to the Empire outweighs his use of the Force.
      As for why the Force theme plays during the trench run, that’s because Obi Wan speaks to Luke through the Force and because Luke uses the Force to help guide the proton torpedoes.
      The reason it plays during the binary sunset theme is because Luke is considering the consequences of leaving Tatooine, and the Force helps guide Luke down the path that will eventually restore balance to the Force (kind of).
      That said, I see how it could be thought of as a “Hero’s Journey Theme”, both ideas work.

    Across the Stars is such a wonderful theme. It perfectly tells the love story between Padme and Anakin, from their unlikely meeting to eventual betrayal and heartbreaking death. I love the swells and the more sinister bits are like the darkness creeping into their otherwise perfect romance. When we get to the ritardando near the end, it becomes musically clear that Padme is going to die of heartbreak. I just love how Williams managed to tell an entire love story over the course of one theme but damn it hits everytime for me.

    Fun fact: The music for the duel between Maul and Obi-Wan/Qui-Gon is called Duel of the Fates because that battle was actually the point that defined the future of the galaxy. If Qui-Gon had lived, Anakin would not have fallen to the dark side because Qui-Gon was the best teacher Anakin could have gotten, and would have been able to help Anakin with his feelings. Almost no other moment in the entire prequel trilogy carries the same weight that that duel does, even if it isn't immediately apparent.

Clap and cheer plz" every 10 minutes or so, without anything new of substance, that I hate it
      It's not as flawed in how it's written in a vacuum like some other scores outside of Star Wars, but it's so pathetic in how it's used (likely the fault of the director, JJ Abrams) that it's possibly one of my least favorite soundtracks in any movie

I think the reason I like it so much is because it was one of the background tracks that played during the old Battlefront II Mos Eisley map, and I logged so many hours playing assault mode on that stage. The nostalgia feels of killing Darth Vader as Luke plays out in my mind each time I hear it.

    one thing i really like about qui-gon's funeral music is how it was brought back twice. once for padme's funeral (which made for a nice callback) and twice for the start of the last episode of the clone wars, victory and death. for the latter it really set the mood for a tense episode where we had no idea where it was going

    Duel of the Fates "while Anakin is riding on his speeder on Tatooine just like how we meet Darth Maul" is completely missing the point. He's racing to save his mother, he's trying to save someone he loves despite being told to let go. What leads him to the Dark path in the end? The same exact thing. His mother warns him in TPM "You can't stop the change, anymore than you can stop the suns from setting" and what's happening in the background as he races to save her? The suns setting. Duel of the Fates is about Anakin losing his family, first his father figure Qui-Gon, then his mother Shmi, then his brother Obi-Wan. These losses shift the destiny of the entire galaxy forever. And directly leading up to each loss, a version of Duel of the Fates plays.

      Duel of the Fates is about, Fates. Qui Gon Vs Maul was a Fate between Anakin’s fate. If Qui Gon beats Maul, light side wins, if Maul kills Qui Gon, Anakin will slowly drifts to the dark side. Same with his mother. If Anakin saves his mother alive, he stays in the light side. But if his mother dies, he goes deeper in the dark. The first two movies uses duel of the fates as Anakin fates to the dark side hard

    14:02 Imagine how great Rey as a protagonist could have been: Her growing up on a sand planet, even though not on Tatooine, but still, on a sand planet like our previous two protagonists. And her musical theme having this wonderful leitmotif connection to Palpatine‘s theme and thus himself. Story-wise there is so much in this to use for a general trilogy outline for the character. The fact that she comes from a desert planet but not the one like our other two main characters, showing how she is important for the balance of the force, despite not being a skywalker by blood and still being closely tied to them by being some sort of offspring of palpatine. I like to think that despite her being his offspring that he won’t appear in the sequels and the main antagonists could/ would be Kylo, where there was also much potential to tie Rey and him together because of HIS connection to the skywalkers, and again some sort of leader like Snoke or Hux were but them pulling the strings on Kylo because he is estranged from his parents. I really like the idea of a Kylo/Skywalker like Ben solo who is the antagonist and someone else who‘s not Skywalker by blood being the counterpart to that, it really shifts the tone while organically changing up the character connections we had in previous trilogies. The concept that Ben struggles with his inheritance to the point where he leaves his parents and Luke behind to turn to the dark side is so cool as a parallel to Anakin‘s Downfall and it would also be a good opportunity to tell more story with Luke but this time in a mentor role where he has still room to improve after having failed Kylo after the Victory in Ep. 6. The revelation that an (ancient) sith is actually controlling everything like in Episode 9‘s version from Trevorrow is also not a bad idea and solely with all this you have a great outline for your trilogy.

      I didn’t find the score that bad.

      @@octaviocontrerasvalle811 It's not inherently bad but it's not very original. And we know John Williams is no slacker when it comes to writing film scores. I mean The Force Awakens has an excellent score, even if it fails in many other aspects. Honestly if Ennio Morricone hadn't been overdue foe an Oscar in 2015, Williams might have taken home his sixth Oscar.

    Episode III has so many amazing tracks.
    My four favorites have to be:
    - Duel of Fates
    - General Grievous Theme
    - Battle of Heroes
    - Order 66

      2003 General Grievous theme was awesome though, it's the musical version of "Grievous is not trapped in a room with you. You are trapped in a room with Grievous." It makes him sound like an unstoppable machine that will wreck your stuff, this music sounds like a horror movie villain theme. The screeching violins remind you of that shower theme from "Pshyco." this small part of the soundtrack wormed its way into my ears and it's not a bad thing, go hear it if you haven't before.

      I B personally love A path I cannot follow a ton, it makes me think about everything that’s happened prior that’s lead to this moment. Not just order 66, but Grevious, Dooku, Maul, the Clones, The Old Republic, pretty much everything that got wasted leading to this moment.
