- Sigma 60mm f2.8 EX DN Art Lens on the Sony a6000, a6300 and a6500 - Equal to 90mm at f2.8. DOF equal to f4 on full frame. Short telephoto, portrait prime lens. $209 Well Spent! Hybrid Auto focus - Sony doesn't allow third party lens manufacturers to utilize full screen hybrid focus area in intelligent auto or superior auto but it does utilize the full screen with focus tracking and face tracking with continuous focus in manual, A, S and P modes. Bottom line: In auto modes they only have twinkley boxes in the center.... AF is still fast. This lens works on the a6000, a5000, a5100, a3000, NEX 7, NEX 6 , 5, 3,

I purchased a new Sony a6000 a couple of weeks ago and I'm blown away with what a great feature rich camera it is! I was looking for lens reviews to use with this camera body when I luckily found your detailed review of the Sigma 60mm f2.8 DN Art Lens. After watching this review I decided to purchase this lens. I received my lens in the mail today, on 12/28/2016, and gave it a test run as soon as I received it. The lens is exactly as you detailed and is indeed as amazingly sharp as you shared in your review! Your review sold me on this lens and I simply wanted to let you know I couldn't be happier with my purchase! This truly is an amazing lens!
knives&guns ziess lenses r gud but it's costly lense 😢
knives&guns I have an a 5000 and a6000 the lens works better on the a6000
Although it shuts a little
One of the best lens reviews I have seen for some time.......you have made me return to using this excellent lens, after it languished for a year or so in the bottom of my camera bag.....Thank You.
The photos from this lens are truly exceptional and the value is hard to beat. I absolutely love it. You are not the only reviewer to rave about this lens (photozone and admiring light raved too).
Great review, I have just purchased the Sigma 30mm and the sigma 60mm for my A6000 and they are excellent, giving me great detail on portrait photos. Keep bringing reviews on more lenses for the A6000.
Became interested in the A6000, and wanted to check lots of reviews for the camera and lens options - am impressed with your serious, professional reviews (even before I learned you are based here in the valley of the sun.) Thanks for sharing your knowledge in a helpful way.
Thanks for the review!! Ive been waiting for a review of the a6000 with the sigma 60mm. I think im gona have to pair that lens with my a6000 now. Love your videos btw.
Just popped for a new camera...the Sony a6000 silver. Price was a crazy $550 with kit lens, Wasabi dual battery & charger, 32 GB card & mini bag. Same thing today is like $750 plus. Cool! Now...on to the prime lens reviews...so professional with point by point detail. Excellent presentations (talking about the Sigma prime trio here). Thanks for such a good job from your newest subscriber.
Love your reviews!!! Thanks and keep it up!
David, thanks so much for the unbiased reviews of the sigma prime lens. I have the a6000 and its my go to camera! I shoot sony only, and have lots of a mount lens. Anyway ive been looking at the sigma lineup and after your reviews, i will be getting the lineup. Amazing lens for the money! Thanks again, Fred
Thank you for this excellent review, I'm convinced !
Many Thanks to You. Grand Merci from Morocco (North Africa)
I use the M43 version of this lens, and the 19mm, and find the performance of both to be extraordinary. On a scale of 1 to 10 for value, these two score 11!
I bought this lens for my a6000 after watching this review and wow this is the sharpest lens I've owned! Thanks Davin!
Great video showing off a great lens on a great camera, how great is that :)
Keep up the good work, I look forward to your coming videos.
As pretty as it is, that lens isn't destined to wear well from a resale perspective - any minor scratch is going to show badly.
Agree Seth Burgess
I would go with the all black version - but then again, the relatively low cost of the lens versus the IQ it is capable of makes me think one could live with a limited resale value.
You always put a wrap on it or something to increase day to day protection :)
Carbon fibre wrap would probably look pretty funky as well.
Mark Reynolds Good idea. gaffers tape would also stop someone from stealing it due to being so ugly.
Love all the sigma art series lenses for my A6000. But the 60mm is the standout. I take a lot of shots of my family and friends while we sit in cafe's. It is perfect for portraits.
Appreciate your video, I was convinced to buy one. very detailed testing and professional advice about the lens AF feature. As a beginner to use sony lens, I found this lens more useful than other high end lens.
I ordered the 19mm this morning and got the 30mm when I bought my A6000. 60 is on my wish list. Thanks for helping me make my decision on getting this camera. Love your videos!
***** Its pretty good. I will be reviewing it next week. I am going to test it directly against the 20mm pancake.
GJ on the review!
Awesome review, planning to go buy this as my first non-kit lens to my alpha 6000. :)
Awesome review man appreciate this! You have me looking at sigma lenses again...hopefully all the copies come out more consistent on the mirrorless line. DSLR lenses by Sigma were hit or miss for the sony alpha line back in the day I don't know if that's still the case.
well made review bud!!
Very well done review
I bought this lens about a year ago, tried it but haven't used it much.... I will be now, thanks for the video
I recently got the 19mm Sigma 2.8 for my a5100. Amazingly sharp edge to edge and fast autofocus. I did not expect a wider angle lens to be so free of distortion and so sharp at the edges. Tip for non-sony lenses: try different autofocus modes as some modes will limit the autofocus area to a small area in the middle when using non-sony lenses.
Thank you soooo much for theses videos!! So helpful when you don't know what to buy :/ Best camera to film youtube beauty videos, need colorful lens, what would you recommend? :)
this will sound odd but the Sony 30mm macro. it's cheap but it allows you get really close if you need to show detail. I film all of my stuff with it.
+Lavikka Photography Nice ill Check it out :) i have the Sony nex 3!! Thanks :)
+Lavikka Photography finally went for a 35mm f1.8 !! really excited about working with new materials!!! :)
+Lavikka Photography found it lol alright man so I'll be taking pictures of only the head hair designs I'll be 4 feet away and got light surrounding me from my back maybe 5 feet away just want to make sure I get the right lens thank you very much
You want the Sigma 30mm f2.8
Hi sir, Does the Sony a6000 limit the 4D focus on all sigma lenses while using AF-C mode? Only 5 focus points in the middle of the frame are allowed
+Am Sopharith It is. but strangely it still works and its fast.
Thanks for your information. Like all your videos with very helpful instructions and information
A really good review.
Another great video! Thanks
I love this lens, it's great for portraits and its at a great price
With limited options for the Sony E mounts, the Sigmas lens are not only a great option but at fantastic value. The DXMO mark for the 60mm Sigma places it third overall against all other lenses and first for sharpness. When you consider the price, this is a must have prime lens.
Thanks for this video!
Very good review...thanks.
Great review , you should do more of this plz
There is a lot. Check out the channel.
I have this lens, currently the best lens for a6000. I love it.
Here is the guy....Thanks Lavikka, you make greats videos.
Thank you for your video. I just got my Sony a6000 and was looking for an extra lens. I thInk this may be it.
"Hear that"..."what the hell is that" Had to laugh, found that quite funny. Subscribed, good Honest reviews.
Great review. I was a bit hesitant if this lens is any good (due to the price point mainly - I thought it should be more than that for the good lens)). But this review and some other (pointing to the sharp image and beautiful bokeh background), made it clear what lens to buy for my son to replace kit lens on his A6000. Now Sigma 60mm f2.8 EX DN Art is on its way from Japan.
another on my wish list.. and the price.. nice price too
again thank you ...
Good review I bought the lens and love it
Thank you for this video, I currently own the Sony a6000 and was looking for a telephoto lens to do portrait photography at a reasonable price. I currently own the Sony 35mm f1.8 lens and now will purchase this lens.
Great video. Thanks!
And not to forget the price. This is on special for $209 at B&H just now. Insane for this quality of glass. And I see it's near the top of the DXO list for E mount fixed focal length lenses. I'm holding out for the A7000 (my first mirrorless camera) soon to be released, but this lens will definitely be coming with it.
with my 1670 this do not happen or earlier before exchanging Sigma 30f28 it did not happen. this happened only on this lens 60f28. I somewhat understood your question. I usually switch of the camera and attach the lens and I did the same for 60f28. sometimes it is quick and often this error happens with a total out of focus display on the LCD and also in EVF. I tried removing it and putting back on. after several tries it will focus and that AF MOTOR sound stops. Once it focuses then no problem. This problem occurs only when switch off and on
great review just got a sigma 30mm surprised by how good it is on my nex 6
Great review. I am really thinking about getting this camera. I'm a die hard canon fan. My 5d pays the bills. I am a little reluctant to adopt a new sustem, but from what Ive seen about this camera it is really looking good and the price point is amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Hey... Thks for this video! I just bought this lens for my Sony A6000. I confirm : low price and hight quality 👍
Nice review..
Great vid. Thanks
It's an excellent portrait lens and performs as well as any other similar optic. It's not necessary to obsess about pixels and other pointless technical issues. If you're an imaginative and reasonably able photographer, you'll enjoy this lens.
Good video!
Thanks for your review. I love cheap but good quality lenses :). This is one of them. If I am correct your next review will be Sigma 30mm f2.8 DN Art lens? I was wondering if you use the old (not Art) or the new Art lens. I heard that the old one is better. Anyway, I'm looking forward to see your next review.
Own the A6000 with the kittens. These videos convinced me to switch to Sigma lenses. The kit lens is not to great of quality, but the Sigma lenses rock!! Thanks for this review !!
You do such a great job with the reviews. Thanks for that. Have you mentioned what your favorite lens is so far for your A6000? I know that's a subjective thing, depending on how/what you shoot, but I was just curious. Also, other than vintage glass+adapter, what would you use for portraits? I'm ready to buy another lens (I have the 18-105) and would like something that lets in a little more light. Thanks!
Might just be my next buy in spite of the ney sayers... I liked what I saw in you review.
Thanks
This video is also just superbly well done (quality, pictures, sound and informations) Thumb up easy.
On thing about that lens, is all the electronics of the lens is link to the A6000 body? We didn’t see the contact pins.
Thanks and well done. :)
Yes and can be used on high speed focusing settings too.
i just scored this lens like new on ebay for 125 bucks, now have the 19, 30 and 60 they are great lenses.
Great video! Very informative!
If you were buying this camera and could start with one lens... portrait and landscape, would you get this lens or?
Thanks
I want to get a different lens than just the kit lenses that my A6300 is coming with (16-50, 55-210) I am torn between the Sony 35mm 1.8, Sony 50mm 1.8, or this Sigma 60mm......which lens would you choose???
hey man i'm having the same problem. so which lens did you get in the end
gearXtreme 35 mm makes around 52 which is the best walk around and blazing fast focus
get the 35. i got the 50 and it was way too close to take a pic of anything anywhere. but outside its a beast with better bokeh than the 35.
I posted a comment about vintage lenses on the A6000 before, but can you do a specific review on one of your favorite/most used vintage lenses? I've looked around more but I still can't decide on one lens.
Cheers
Sure. look for it in a few weeks. I've been thinking about doing that.
Hi bought this Camera this week!! plus the sigma f2.8 art 60mm lens, On the straith of your videos!! Still trying to work out the settings? So far I found that the image stabilisation or camera shake and eye focus don't work on a none sony lens, I`v looked at other videos no one seems to mention this, And the Manual is as much use as a fridge to a escemo!!!!! Keep up the good work.
After seeing this video and looking more into this lens I will pick up. Thank you for the video. Question...can we get more glaring from Murray?
Hey I've been seeing a couple of other reviews where the focus is only limited to the middle. Is that the case with this lens?
I like the silver look, but you must use Lens band to protect it when shooting events
At 5:30 - it is not lens flare. It is chromatic aberration (purple fringing).
Thanks!
Just came across this review. I recognized Old Town and realized you're a local. I live just a mile away from there and shoot there all the time.
Swing by and say Hi. I own Method Art.
Cool. I will. I usually take a walk down there on Thursday nights. Just bought the a6000 today too.
that double cab though! I have a 67 bug, and wanting to sell my a900 to jump into the a6000, but not sure if I should put off to see if a newer model is going to be released
Its a 71 transporter. Look like death but runs like a beast. If they release a new version then it will show up at the end of March.
ordered the 60 mn as a result of the. video for my a6000
So true!
First of all I would like to thank you for those great reviews.
I just bought only the body of Sony a6000 and now I am looking to see which lens to buy. I am not a professional and I only use the camera as a hobby and for family shooting (mostly outdoors). For the summer I was thinking to begin with the Sigma 60mm. I must say that I do a lot of pixel peeping and I like to get results as sharp as possible. 95% of photograph shooting is handheld... I do have steady hands and have experience with dSLR cameras (450D, 60D)
Since I do a lot of handheld shooting... do you believe that the lack of OSS is going to give me less sharpness than the 50mm OSS?
Which one do you recommend?
Sorry if this kind of question is already answered
solaris2k4 The sigma 60mm is the sharpest lens for e-mount. OSS does help but not much and does shut off while bursting. Here is my list of worthy lenses. www.lavikkaphotography.com/blog
Do you use single shot mode or continuous autofocus with the Sigma and Sony? I read that the phase detect autofocus is very limited with this lens. Thank you for your excellent commentary.
I pretty much it on Continuous.
Thank you for your review. I am thinking of getting a Sony A6000 for shots of family during holidays. Would this lens be appropriate? If not, what lens? Also, what lens for a little street photography and astrophotography? Again, thanks for taking the time to review the lens.
You may want to go wider for street and astro photography. Look at the Sony 28mm F2 FE lens.
Thank you.
Lavikka, can you confirm that the fast pdaf/af-c only works on center focus area. Outside the center has the slower cdaf only.
Hi-ya, I have purchased sigma 30mm, 19mm and Sony 50mm f1.8 for my nex 7 camera.
What's your thoughts on purchasing sigma 60mm. Since I Owen Sony 50mm? Kind regards
Keith alani
Sigma is 20% sharper at f2.8 & f4, but i think the OSS is more important. Keep your Sony.
I just purchased the Sigma 60mm. Can you use eye autofocus with this lens? Also, are there any adjustments I need to make to my a6000 for this lens?
Yes you can use eye focusing with it. No adjustments. I prefer to shoot on AF-C with a flexible spot set on medium.
Hi- I'm very amateur and love my sony a6000. I just purchased this lens thanks to your great review. I have a question-this may be obvious, but can I zoom in with this lens? Up until now I've been using the kit lens and it's got easy zooming on the actual lens. Can I also zoom in/out with the sigma 60mm? Also, any idea how I can set the aperture to 2.8? It seems my camera has automatic aperture adjusting and I want to keep the aperture at the best portrait setting. Thanks!
It's not a zoom however you can enable digital zoom to get it to crop in a bit but the results won't be good. To change the aperture you have to put the camera on either manual or aperture priority.
Hi Lavikka and thank you for your videos.
I have a question for you, i have a sony nex7, and i have buy this lenses Sigma 60mm, because i trust you review, and i like it very.
I like to take photos of my kids, and they don't stop one minute, so on Sony nex7 autofocus it's not very fast so i have many blur photos.
I like to buy the Sony A6000, because they say autofocus it's very fast.
My question is, do you think that A6000 + this sigma 60mm is fast enough to take kids photos ? track kids when they move or run ? Sony nex7 is not good for this. Will i see great increase between a6000 and sony nex7 with these lens ?
Because i heard that A6000 with non sony lenses (like this sigma) are not so fast. Do you confirm , or should i buy A6000 and expect a big difference?
You only show video focus, so i can not see in internet photos with movement with this lenses . How they behave a6000 + Sigma 60mm
thank you
Hi lavikka! Would you do a comparative review of phase detection feature of a6000 for sigma and sony lenses? Btw, nice review man!
I can do it on the 30mm.
Lavikka Photography that would be great!! Hope to see your review the soonest!! :)
Helpful review! I’m somewhat a beginner in photography as the a6000 is my first camera, still shooting with the kit lens currently. I’m looking to purchase my first lens and I’m torn between the sigma 30mm f1.4 or the 60mm f2.8... Any recommendations? I shoot mainly portraits
Sigma 30mm f1.4 first and 60mm at christmas.
Lavikka Photography Is there much of a difference between the two? Like in the end result, is it worth it to have both? I may have to decide one or the other, although they are both super cheap..
Hi, Firstable, Thanks lot for your very interesting reviews. I have the Sigma 30 mm 2.8. Have I buy the 60mm 2.8 ?
+Younes Mahrach it's worth it.
I just bought the A6000 and I used to use a Nikon d90 with the 35 and 50 1.8 primes. Im having crazy thoughts and worries about the size of this thing its soo small. Do you think the sigma primes i.e 30 f2.8 and the 60 f2.8 are as good as the Nikon glass i have been using.
I have been considering selling the Sony A6000 and go back to the Nikon but I keep seeing reviews like yours showing how good this thing is. Im not sure what to do.
Great videos by the way keep them coming.
The image quality will be way better! The a6000 is a huge step forward compared to the D90.
Nice lens for the price very nice pictures bright and sharp but it’s slow
as hell to focus
How does this compare with the Sony 50mm f1.8 lens ? Thanks.
thanks for this great review. i learned a lot. i was just wondering, do you have a video explaining about the device i need in order to mount my new sigma 60mm f2.8 DN lens onto my sony alpha6000? i am a newbie 🙂
You need nothing. It's for e-mount, just plug and play it.
Gito Sibarani ah yes, i figured out that i accidentally bought the micro 3/4 version. had to return it and exchange for e-mount! 😅
Would this lens be Better to use for beauty videos compared to the 50mm f1.8? With my beauty videos I would be zooming in a lot and I do prefer a blurry background while I do so.
It's not a zoom.
What should I get for some macro photos? Any ideas ?
Hi David, can you tell that this lens works with eye auto-focus? Happy new year to you and to your crew!
Technically yes but I have never been able to get eye focus to work very well so I can't really tell you how well it works with it.
Lavikka Photography Thanks! One of my favorite features. :(
Robert Budafai I doubt its the lens. Just trying to look through the evf gives me eye strain. I'm guessing the lens works the way it should.
Lavikka Photography I tested the eye focus a little further and it only works in the zone focus area and in my opinion not that well. So you may not like it for that. Technically it doesn't work eye focus start either.
Lavikka Photography Thanks David!
I own a Canon 50mm 1.8, which i use with the G7. Would this Sigma be better than my Canon?
Hi, just correcting its not lens flare that you are showing is the chromatic aberration.
+Jonathan Bento He talks about both and those are flares when he talks about the colored areas where bright light and edges of foliage mix.
Thanks as always brother. Would you recommend this for street and night or something different for the A6000? Thanks in advance.
+Adam Strachn If you are talking about walking around and shooting mainly people then you have to realize this is the equivalent of a 90mm lens in a 35mm camera. It is a bit of a zoom. Great for shooting from a bit of distance or extreme close-ups. It would all depend on your style if you would go with this or a wider angle lens like the 30mm or 19mm. Look at the video and you can see how zoomed in the image is when he shoots video to demonstrate the autofocus.
I will be getting the a5100 or 56000 body and was so set on getting the sony 35mm but now im torn with your reviews , i mostly shoot my toddler so i wan something fast and sharp , im really a fan of the blurred background on the 35 . So what would you suggest? The 35mm are pricy so thats why im still holding to buy the body because i want to buy it all the same time . Thank you! Great reviews
jocy194 Stick with the 35mm. It really is people lens.
I'm not sure about the focal range. Technially this lens is great but I don't see myself using it. I don't use this focal length for portrait. I'd only use it occasionally for action shots, like events or whatever, but then a zoom would be better wouldn't it.
Does anyone else use this lens for macro photography? I get 0.65x magnification with 26mm smart extension tube and a working distance of 6 inches. This is great. I know its not flat-field but still..
Hi waht do you think about the sony sel 50 f1.8 in comaprison to the sigma 60mm f2.8? Which of them would you recommend for the a 6000?
Sven Zimmer I did a review on both. The 60 is sharper overall and wide open. The 50mm is very good just not as sharp wide open.
+Lavikka Photography you are comparing a 2.8 vs a 1.8 you should do both a 2.8
-_- jesasa !!
I have a question or issue with the same lens. I've used it outdoors a lot and it seems as if dirt has gotten into it. So as I try to use manual focus, it' catches debris in the focus ring and at times gets stuck until I use a little more force to focus. So is there a way for me to clean it and make it a lot smoother to use? Thanks for your help. Keep up the work and videos.
+AllorNothin925 Ouch! I haven't taken one apart yet. Give me two weeks. I may rip mine apart for the heck of it.
So this or the Sony 50mm 1.8 for portraits?
yeah ill just go ahead and buy it
Nice review but I cannot decide whether to buy a Sigma 60mm or 300 F2.8DN lens for my A6000. whats your recommendation.
Im guessing you meant 30mm f2.8 or 60mm f2.8. If you are using the kit lens then the 30mm is zoomed half way and the 60mm is zoomed all the way out plus a touch more.
My copy already got 4 micro dusts inside front element. Although the dusts seems to not reduce the image quality. Does your copy fine?
Mine has two specs. but it doesn't affect anything.
