not only entertaining but informing, i now know there’s people that see pictures of these houses and proceed to throw in their shitty 2 cents on how annoyed they are that celebrities with billions of dollars buy abstract/ unnecessarily big homes
I think you also have to consider the amount of energy it takes to run these houses when we're currently going through a climate crisis it's a gigantic waste for something completely not needed
So in your world, no one should have money? No one should be able to have more than what... what number? What is stopping you or anyone else from being a millionaire? A billionaire? Is it your assumption that to become millionaires and billionaires they took money from the middle class and below? Because I would have to admit you are correct... the middle class and struggling and even the poverty class HANDED the people on this list their money voluntarily. They were all actors and artist. I think after seeing enough millionaires admit there are rooms they never use, and forget they even have... it's gotten pretty old. So much excess while others are suffering, some of them our essential workers. Makes me feel really bad how long we've ignored suffering in other countries, though. I get it seems like a huge problem that not one person can fix, but I don't think defending these homes for the sake of just being cool to experience is the answer, either. Moreso when it displaces locals, especially in Hawaii.
Is it really showy though? Cuz I didn't know about these till I saw this video. I think it's only showy if you heavily pay attention to celebrities. Also who cares what they're doing with all those rooms. Most people in first world country buy things they don't need. Its news pages and sites reporting on purchases because they're public and people care about what the ultra-rich are buying for some reason. @@EveTheRaviolo It just seems like they disagree because most of us aren’t rich commentary influencers or celebrities, so celebrities’ choices and trends with their houses and the excessive space is weird more often than not, it’s not that hard to understand lol
Yea, it kinda seems like most people have the mindset that if they can't have something, then no one else should. It's like how so many people want to be able to give their children nice things, but also look down on those who had nice things in their childhood, because apparently that means that they never experienced true hardship and don't know the worth of a dollar. I guess it boils down to people not wanting to experience suffering, but then resenting anyone who doesn't have to suffer. Makes no sense.
@@orchdork775 I think people are misunderstanding the whole point of the making fun of rich houses trend. It's not so much "rich people cant have nice things" its "rich people buy things that are huge and glamorous but have no style, personality, or creativity". Exactly, and everyone pokes fun at people in other economic classes, it's a part of life. I was a nanny to a millionaire for a while, and they made fun of "poor" people for playing the lottery and having cars with taped up windows ("it's like $150 fix, why don't they just get it fixed?"). Kanye is probably laughing in his mansion rn
Mean comments from people bitter about their own bad housing situation aren’t really that surprising. Housing crisis is an absolute mess and seeing a mega mansion being RENTED is just crazy. And knowing they likely don’t even use 2/3rds of their own home just makes you feel more bitter. People don’t really pine after that stuff anymore, most people are pining after something livable. I don’t think people find looking at houses like that fun like they used to. Ok but if I get a mega mansion I’m absolutely building a castle, all these modern style houses are stale

Seeing all these 10+ bedroom homes for one person who isn’t even there 50% of the year makes me hate the concept of the Hype House a teeny bit less :/ at least all that space is being lived in
my only issue with celebrity homes is how unnecessarily big they are. why do you need 9 bedrooms? why do you need a backyard the size of a football field? just the amount of time and money it must take to keep it all clean. you can't just hire a cleaning lady, you need a whole team of them, otherwise it'll take her a month to clean the house and by the time she's done she has to start over
Electricity lighting the whole house, water and chlorine for the pool, Water for the plumming and bath, gas heating, air conditioner... And to think there are half a million people that don’t even have one personal possession because it was stolen from them while sleeping

“Supply and demand” in response to “Why is there such massive wealth inequality where one person can live in a house that would fit dozens” is perhaps the most out of touch millionaire thing Cody could have said, this video sucks
@@stigv5474 But the very existence of these massive, expensive houses at a time when so many are living in poverty is a symptom of a deeply unequal and unjust society. @@user-db1ih8po1f It is indeed a symptom of an unequal society. Though, I would avoid talking about USA 2021 as a time and place of "devastating poverty". But people aren't making comments about inequalities, are they? Inequalities don't decrease by rich people not spending their wealth on extravagant properties.
cody my guy you can’t remove these homes from their context of being more money than half of america will ever have in their life. when you do, it is super off-putting and defensive.
and you can hardly call these massive celebrity mansions “homes”, they’re just another means of showing off wealth to other wealthy people, that’s why there’s an aesthetic disconnect between them and the instagram commenters. I forgot you had so much money before watching this video.
Well in that case these people should stop almost literally throwing every pay check they earn at these celebs... Stop watching their movies, stop downloading their songs, going to concerts, buying merchandise, watching their videos etc. It's literally the same people complaining about the rich celebs that are obsessively supporting them.🤷
yeah i mean.. it really can be upsetting to see people carelessly wasting money for the sake of it, when someone who might be working just as hard is struggling to get by (as an example, maybe a single parent working multiple jobs, etc.) it must be insanely frustrating for those people, when even a fraction of the price of these excessive houses is enough to live on
The average American can very easily rent. Whether or not somebody else is rich has no effect on your life whatsoever. It’s not like it celebrities made a upper middle class salary of like $200,000 per year that every American would suddenly have a bit more money in their pocket
I think the point is, when you have too much money, you can spend it on whatever you want. People are just mad they aren’t as wealthy. It’s not your decision to make on how people spend their money. It’s okay to appreciate wealth sometimes.
oooooooo cody i get your point with this video but when it comes down to it, i don't think people are actually that deeply upset about the aesthetics of celebrity homes. probably has moreso to do with the wealth divide and IDK hahahha there's clearly a bigger issue at play here and at the end of the day, no one's gonna get hurt from us middle class folks having a laugh and calling billionaires' homes boring.

I mean even if you only want to talk about the architecture behind the houses shown in these video, and nothing else, these actually do look boring. There are really (architecturally) interesting and beautiful, detailed houses out there that cost a giant fortune. But these are just uninspired, modern estates that feel incredibly empty and cold to me. There's no interesting change in texture throughout the indoors, the walls are just predominantly white (to make it look brighter and spacier), and the furniture is predominantly black and white as well. There isn't a touch of inspired artistry in these.
right? completely ignoring the economic and environmental impacts of egregiously excessive homes like this, they're just... boring. there's no artistry to it, no individuality, no creativity. no functionality either--the white cabinets in some of those kitchens will be easy as hell to stain after using the kitchen three times. it's like... these are not spaces that are designed to be lived in, they're just designed to flaunt.
Why is everyone suddenly an architect and a critique for houses when it comes to this? Why people have such a need to judge these millionaire homes like do you do the same to average houses too? Are you judging your neighbors house too how ugly and boring it is? Feels like people do this just to make them feel better about themselves. Im not saying you're wrong, architecturally many of them probably are really boring but who tf cares? It's not like you have to or ever will live in those houses, it's just very weird what you people are doing. People have different taste and maybe many don't even want or need an "architectually great" house so why is it an issue? Like I really don't understand this.

I'll ever forget having to turn in cans as a kid just to get a treat, or missing out on school activities like prom because I, nor my parents could afford any of it. Or quitting a job then being evicted because I didn't have a car & winter was deadly. Some of the rich have struggled & they're the ones who do it right. If I ever get there, I'd be content with a house by a lake & some of the fun things that come with that. I'll be sure the rest goes to the right places. I always hope to think like "I'm human" & never think like "I'm rich". In the end, we're all gonna die & it wouldn't feel right to live large & give minimal.
It actually is frustrating when old houses are gutted and made contemporary. I live in an apartment building from 1929, and the woodwork is really beautiful. The kitchen was renovated before I moved in, it has contemporary fixtures and fancy countertops and junk, but it tones well with the apartment and doesn’t feel too modern or out of place.
I think this is only a bother because of how bad the US government is and in that case you should be directing your frustration to the government
Thing is it's not the celebrities that are showing their houses off in these. Its news pages and sites reporting on purchases because they're public and people care about what the ultra-rich are buying for some reason.
@@timsoller2101 well it didn’t hurt my feelings lol, I’m just saying the wage gap in America rn is so vast that when people who are rich like Cody are making video defending other rich people it comes across as a little time deaf. Like I said I’m a big fan of Cody and I’m not insulting him but this it’s the first video he’s done talking about money and I dont think it translates well to his audience.
10:46 Cody not understanding the Seinfeld reference and thinking they’re just ripping on him is funny to me

What's there to apologize about for having money? rich people are not doing anything wrong just for having money.
@@whitepicklejuice Wrong. The rich get money because they exploit the workers under them. You really need to learn about capitalism.
@@jessicayoung3656 LMFAO exploit? You mean workers are WILLING to work for a certain wage!? People are voluntarily applying for low skill work and are surprised to find out that McDonald's wasn't the best career choice? Nobody forces anyone into a job, so if you apply for one, you have no room to complain about pay when you decided you were willing to work for that wage because you wanted to work there. Don't settle for less than, if you don't want less than.
@@whitepicklejuice don't settle for less?!? Tell us about these big jobs dude. Coz it's not like the market will get saturated in those "high jobs" and fall back into paying less wages. I wonder how many people live In these giants houses because I think living in them alone would actually be boring regardless of those awesome indoor pools
I imagine they have a ton of friends that hang out there with them
i dont think celebs are ever alone
It's most likely an investment property. I'm sure they stay there sometimes, but I doubt that's where they stay on a regular basis.
At first, I thought Cody was going to be roasting the homes. Now I realize he’s commenting on other people roasting the homes. Lmao
those cat dissection videos were very educational.
I like that a lot of people are starting to recognize that these places aren't cool, even in an aspirational way. It's all just reckless, ugly, conspicuous consumption. Tired of it.
Opinions exist bruh just causes u don’t find something good looking doesn’t mean other ppl don’t
I haven't watched Cody in a while, but what happened to his old editor? No hate on the new dude, but the videos are very low energy now and aren't really anything more than jump cuts and slow zooms.
Videos just feel like they drag on visually and I find myself putting them in the background.
$70m on a house is disgusting when poverty is so prevalent. Simple as that.
@@ar-yj8lb i'm sure they treat themselves well, but what sane person needs so much space they will rarely, if ever, use? Rarely do actual, rich af families buy such spacious places. @@ar-yj8lb Nobody with that much money actually "earned" it bro
@@ar-yj8lb "treat yourself" seems a little underwhelming here, don't you think? It is absolutely wrong for someone with more money than they can spend, who has more money that 99% of the WORLDS population will EVER see in their lifetime to spend it on themselves. Especially when taking into consideration that there are so many suffering.
And also, don't ever think that a rich person made it to the top by themselves, behind every financially successful person there is a solid team and network of support, brother. That makes it even more gross that they can spend it on themselves instead of giving back.

Jesus Christ....
and they may buy another one soon (there are some comments in a Kelsey's vlog some time ago) 🗣️
I say "them" but we are all thinking it, right?
Talking about these pool chairs called him poor🤦 maaaan shut up...
This video felt like he drank a bang for the first time and had to record a video no matter what 😂
I mean we are experiencing a housing crisis and have been for a long time, so yeah... it makes sense that people are shitting on these homes.
I, for one, think a good ol' razzing is necessary for the uber wealthy. Nothing funnier than spending 13mil on a home and someone with $23 in their bank account immediately taking the piss out of it
Right... Cuz it's not like we're rapidly depleting our natural resources
the only thing is is that the uber wealthy don’t give a fuck about other people being butthurt over their nice house. so razz all ya want but it doesn’t do anything but make you look bitter tbh ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@meghangray4943 Neither does defending them like an idiot
That’s a funny take
I mean even if you only want to talk about the architecture behind the houses shown in these video, and nothing else, these actually do look boring.
Yeah, in YOUR opinion. That’s not a fact. Besides, I’m sure when people move in, they make it interesting
Thank you I was thinking the exact same thing.
Why is modern always seen as boring? Minimalism is a thing.....
“I like homes” Cody you like your home. You literally have your own office space😂
i dont think cody understands why we hate rich people lmao
Your hate is directed in the wrong side. You shouldn’t be hating people who got rich by singing or acting because literally millions of people watched their movies or enjoy their music everyday. They did literally nothing wrong !! You should hate the government, real estate brokers, the big companies who loot people! Half knowledge is always dangerous
he's one of them of course he doesn't lmao he never knew struggle in his own life. Some people can develop empathy for situations they were never in, but no cody ko i guess.

@@igotpushed5490 yeah, hating on business men, politicians, and old money is one thing, but like these people are celebs, which means that they are talented/smart enough to have other people pay them for their skills and face, and with the stress of celeb life they are personally earning their money on the daily. It's not like they got their money with slave labour or smth, we know their names for a reason. Like even some middle class suburban families in America have pools, why should a celeb get hate bc they bought something they like and enjoy? As long as there aren't like 20 unused bedrooms I don't see the problem
Everyones getting tired of watching rich people while being aware of how down bad most of us are. Hating the rich for flaunting their wealth. Like I totally get you, those houses are sick as hell! Also I know these people collect like 10 and let them rot. My family builds 1-10 mil houses (tiny in comparison lol) and even those are fucking nice to be in. But having grown up really poor it just makes you angry to see how much space as materials they hoard in such a physical literal way.
In the 2000s it was everyones favorite passtime to envy the rich! I feel like things have shifted to not wanting their wealth, just not wanting them to hoard it. Also i totally get this is a comedy yt vid lol. I just think its why people find this shit hard to oogle without hating.
wow you worded out my thoughts perfectly
i think people nowadays do want their wealth lol
@@jacksonelh i mean there's always going to be some people who want wealth. but i think OP was referring to the fact that life and society is so stressful nowadays with so much expectations of being successful yet success is so hard to obtain that most of us are just tired of hustling for money and want the bare minimum. problem is, people hoarding wealth like this make it hard for the rest of us to even get the bare minimum.

That’s sinful to say, hope you don’t actually feel that way because Jesus will cast you into the fire if you do.
Having great success makes some people lose who they were. In the end, we're all gonna die & it wouldn't feel right to live large & give minimal.
a hit dog will holler. if we keep heading down this route you're gonna have an alfie deyes "surviving on £1 for a day" type scandal
Noel needs to make a video “me judging Cody, judging other people, judging rich ppl mansions” 🤣😅
If you want a box with beautiful stuff and white walls inside that’s cool, but I agree turning an antique or nearly antique home into one is disappointing.
exactly!! cody sounds so dumb in this video, i can't
@@JG-kk1mr i mean it’s not like he’s in love with architecture he’s just a commentary youtuber showing funny comments on house photos, which are nice houses (despite the history they may have) can’t really call him stupid over it
It’s definitely very American to bulldoze heritage buildings and throw up something modern. I mean you go to big European cities and they have most of the skyline from 100 years ago intact.
no not really
how do you think these houses were bought? no one is living in them bcs they dont like them so
Yeah, to me, houses lose a lot of personality, or 'soul', when renovated to look modern.
