Thanks for the helpful video Linus! I'm gonna upgrade my memory from 3000 mhz to 1333 :)
my 1333mhz ram is better than my brothers 3200mhz
Guys where can i download more RAM
Thx appreciate it
u cant download ram😂😂
No shit sherlock
I need someone to email me some ram because everytime I try and download it I get a virus and my web pages all get redirected to some online casino website!
BillCosbyEatsBabies Hey, you need to play the online casino in order to get your RAM
You should always get the Dodge Ram...
Dog Ram.

I like this whole conversation
2 years late but I seen this comment and had too...
If you can't Dodge it, Ram it!
*never
Thanks for taking those tests and showing the results, Very Helpful! I appreciate your presentation, Rob
Show this video to all of the fuckers on /g/ who brag about having 2400 MHz RAM.
John Smith on some games it makes a difference juss to know
Many keks, my friend!
keks?
GreekGamer4U Kek you obviously are not from le 4chins.

You get 2400mhz RAM for the same reason you get SLI GTX 980s.
Because its badass.
Craziestbanana You cannot be a badass for a low price!
yeas you can !!!!!!
Craziestbanana
thats only 8 gigs you need atleast 64 to be badass
calvin ouwens 64gb vram 64 gb ram 64TB, im a badass
Agreed... because its badass...
So... buy RAM that make you motherboard look pretty?
+MikeM8891
If you got a window in your box and some LED lights you want it to look good. I'm not going to buy puke green colored RAM to put on my motherboard. But to each their own. If you don't have a window or any lights then it would certainly be less important to you. If you never open your case what difference does it make?
+barakas49
Even if you open your case like every few weeks to do something to it... Still stupid to have coloured RAM with lights on it.
John E
It's not stupid if you have a window on your box with LED lights too. If you don't want a window more power to you. Than for you at least it does not matter at all what your Ram looks like.
+John E you can still get decent looking ram that performs well at a good price fod a windowed case. My brither recently bought kingsyon hyperX ramdisks for his new rig, they are quite reasonably priced for the 1866MHz and the 1600MHz at the moment (in fact the 1866 are a little bit cheaper)
typically speaking, making ramdisk more aesthetically pleasing is a simple as puting some kind of covering over it, it shouldnt cost much to add something like this so shouldnt make them more expensive. Just be careful that its not a price tag associated with marketing how cool they might look, instead just be smart and really think about the performance to cost ratio when shopping around.
I remember when I was a noob and bought ddr4 memory for a ddr3 board lol.
I remember when I was a noob and bought a ddr3 board thinking I didn't need new ram and I had a ddr2 board last and wondered why it wouldn't fit 😂
Revized i remember when i was a noob and i got suckered into buying 3000Mhz ddr4 thinking it was worthwhile over 2133Mhz
Robbie James Lol try 3333mhz 😂
OMG I remember the time when I almost did that. Man, was I oblivious. xD
I remember when I was a noob and I bought an i5 laptop for gaming thinking an i5 can run game at Max settings.
Should have stuck to the consoles.
I use a Dual Channel set up with roughly 2200 mhz and 665Mhz Dram, I have four sticks so its basically two dual channels. They work very well for me, and they are not top of the line, but they are high end. I wouldn't personally pay over a thousand dollars for ram, I kinda feel that if you have the highest ram, and a shitty processor, whats the point? Ya know?
i never thought i'd see you here proto :D
You'd end up with some serious bottlenecking.
New American Fishkeeper
LOL yeah, the ram is 1000 dollars but the processor is a Dual core from 2005. LOL wut?
I am going to take a quote from an old cnet top 5 and adapt it. "It may be $1000 memory, but the over all speed is still stuck in 2005." To be fair, my PC has a quad-core APU and it is terrible. Just upgrade the GPU all the way.
ProtoMario
lol im running an old 775 socket.. p5q mobo, q9550cpu @3.2ghz, 4gb xms2 800mhz n 580gtx still running games fine
I have 800Mhz. You CAN buy it, and I am an idiot.
Batka Ch
Ok, great! I was curious and looked. Literally facepalm'd
J.D. Black Don't feel bad, I passed up 1333mhz 16gb ram for 2400mhz 8gb ram
J.D. Black
have you allready tryed to oc the ram via ur bios? because i bought 1600 mhz corsair vengance and after booting into my bios i found out that they were clocked at 1333mhz .......and then u just set the frequenzy from 1333 to 1600 or whatever
Alexander Smith Wow idiot...
The Weird Gamer Actually no, I benefit from fast ram with after effects. Ram amount is important, but for playback speed, it weighs in significantly. I'm referring to gaming and general use when talking about my regrets.
Perfectly answered my question, aaaaaand SUBSCRIBED! Thanks!
Great video, and GREAT comparison!
I really appreciated man, thanks for your efforts in doing this video.
Now it's more clear to me my about RAM frequency and latency. cool :)
Thanks, this was very informative and helpful!
The only real reason for getting higher clocked RAM would be APU gaming.
Agreed, an APU is the only situation I have ever seen that makes a noticeable difference. Like the man says, its all about how it looks and reliability, if you don't care how it looks get the cheapest brand you trust.
Very true My laptop had a huge boost when I inserted dual kingston hyper x RAM.
trancelistic How the heck did you change ram in laptop?
I got it on video anyhows. CHanging ram with stanadard factory ram. First off, of all it was single channel ( 1x 4 gb) So was like wtf, when I ran CPUID. OK.. Then also very high cl settings. It was ddr 3 on 1333 mhz single channel as in 666 mhz with a cl of like 13.
I bought kingston hyper x with a cas of 9 on 1600 mhz. In dual channel ofcourse. My fps in a game like bioshcock has more then doubled. And ofcourse the laptop itself is fast as hell.
Don't belive me then fu.
OK Im typing drunk... I try to explain it the more common way.
I've bought a laptop who had a decent cpu and video. ( amd a-10 4600m with ATI HD 7660)
I ran the CPUID and saw I was scammed Because it had only 1 x 4 gb running on 667 mhz, aka ddr 1333 on single channel and a cas delay of 13.
I've bought a kit 2x4 gb of kingston hyper x, so its in dual channel and cas is on 9. on 1600 mhz
my fps in bioshcok infinate went from 20 fps to 45 fps when i started the game and played like 20 min. SO yea. it does help alot. For the mobile amd APU laptops.
great to know, thanks for doing this research!
Working on my first build and this was super informative!
Thanks!
We have ddr5 right now 💀
Very interesting results there, didn't expect that at all.
you summed up the whole thing in one video , which i thank you for ,
Love the videos you make man.
Excellent, excellent explanation. Also a question I get asked often, and this will help the conversation.

After watching this video... I'm gonna go shop for money.
Could you please do an updated video on this? A reddit post featuring an experiment showed there are noticeable gains with faster ram especially in CPU-intensive games.
ya this video is a little outdated. now with the new kaby lake cpu's memory up to 3000 mhz do increase speed in things like encoding and winrar, even good gains in gaming. www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2017-intel-kaby-lake-core-i7-7700k-review
:) glad to know i didnt blow my money!
It means the game went through the ram a lot. Instead of CPU-Intensive, it's more to the RAM-Intensive.
your post dates help me get a window to how behind the times i am! this was made 9 years ago and i just moved to 2400
It seems from this video that 1866Mhz CL9 is the sweet spot for the Ram that was tested by Linus. It may be a marginal increase in performance, but an increase all the same. I've just bought 2X4Gb of Corsair Dominator Platinum 1866Mhz CL9 to go into my new build, using an i5 4690K and booted from a Samsung XP941 256Gb SSD which is plugged straight into the PCIe X4 lane to achieve max speed. All this will be put together with my new Gigabyte G1 GTX 970. It's like anything.... You can have amazing ram, but if you couple it with crap components, it's like trying to polish a turd, so to speak.
Your build is similar to the one I'm building for christmas...How does it run? Anything worth noting?
I'm blown away by how fast it is... especially boot time of 15 seconds. I only finished it 2 days ago and haven't had time to overclock yet, so looking forward to seeing what it can do.
There is lots of stuff out there to say how to load the operating system onto the SSD and some said it couldn't be done with a 256 GB version of the XP941... It can, coz I've done it. Non of those ways worked for me, but loading it straight from OEM Windows 7 disc did. Make sure you use either an adaptor to plug into PCIe X4 or M.2 ultra slot which I did on my Z97 extreme 6 mobo to use all available bandwidth and speed. Good luck with the build.... :)
***** That's a coincidence... I upgraded from a Q6600 as well. Wow... what an improvement eh?
I spent £1100 on everything new, so not really an upgrade... but a big step up from the Q6600....
jon woods yeah a q6600 was good in it's day but glad u appreciate the jump, i tend to upgrade every 2 generations and don't see it much.
I want 1 TB of DDR3 @ 3100 Mhz.
Though this will never happen, a man can dream.
A man can dream.
It will maybe come true with ddr8 or something...
You can get up to a TB of RAM on servers
i have seen a nividia card thats got 512 gb
i sure its a write fail it was from 2008 so its a fail but its close to your 1 tb
ECC unregistered 1TB ram?
That's...couple of grand at least.
Finally a video worth my time. Thank you for not being an idiot or biased. :) Keep up this stuff, subbed for sure.
Great tip man, and yeah, definitely was not expecting those results!
thank you !! i have learned alot from you !!
***** why do you think im a nvidia fanboy ?
i dont remember, but okey ,you are right..im a nvidia fanboy...is it wrong to be a fan of nvidia ? :D or you are too ?
***** CUDA, G-Sync, DX, PhysX.
No, it would be wrong not to be a fan of nVidia.
i know boss..i understand :D it would be wrong to be an amd fan :D
i know..i will :) probably gtx 780
Good true information, Thumbs up for you
muy buena información, gracias como siempre. Excelente trabajo sigan así!!
Very informative and to the point video. Thank you.
I would really like a DDR4 update to this, plus some examples of those rare reasons for needing high bandwidth would be nice. I do weird stuff sometimes like running VMs on my desktop (both at work and at home even) and I could guess that might be one of those reasons. I understand capacity pretty well but there has to be some performance reason for getting high end RAM even if it is just high usage of SQL like on an SCCM primary site server with onboard database (Also a guess but I'm more sure of that guess).
So, instead of buying a higher frequency RAM, just save for a better GPU, kids.
Ben A how about you give me your money and I'll spend it on unnecessary shit?
***** 64gb is way too much and i can tell you, it wont improve your gaming experience, get 16gb and you good to go, or you can get 32gb which is still way too much but if you you have budget, get 32gb
1 advice : NOT 32 GIGS OF RAM HOLY SHIT DONT. I barely even reach 8 gigs I bought 4 sticks of 4 gigs ram and threw two of them away at a friend's because it made no difference.
2nd : Wait until zen, it can only do you good. get that 64 gig budget and put it on a new graphics card.
I have reached 16GB.
Robert Norris-Karr how?
dude thnk u 4 da vid uve educated me so much now i can see the very relevant argument! total sense & much appreciated.
Always helpful, thanks guys!
I paid 80 euros about 2 years ago for 16GB of Corsair XMS3 1333Mhz...never failed me and it's more than enough for anything i've thrown at it to date. I've never used at any given time more than 6-8 GB RAM.
i doubt you even had to use 6gb ;p
kucharz508 untill you try running virtual machines XD
***** Lol, BF4 doesn't even use 4.
I have Windows 7 64 and 8 gigs of ram and sometimes I max out the 8 while playing BF4. But that is with multiple programs/windows open, if I close everything not needed my system usage is at 6+. So 16 gigs still isn't necessary, but could be soon.
I just ordered 2 sticks of 1GB 800MHZ DDR2
what year is this
a year where students don't have enough money to buy a new computer.
he might get minecraft up and running.
I'm also gonna try to put a XEON X5460 in a LGA775 mobo to double my cpu performance
ikki that sound like a great idea
Thank you! This was really helpful!
Awesome work guyz as always!
Highspeed RAM is VERY good if you use an APU, such as an AMD-A10, or even with Dual Graphics combined with a dedicated GPU! (As the APU uses RAM as VRAM.)
+Zilla Woah, that is pretty crazy, kind of like how the ps4 and xbone pool ram.
nathan casarez Ehhh, we can't really tell what the real memory transfer rate is of GDDR5 on the APU in the PS4, but I think it's somewhere close to 3ghz. The Xbone kinda doesn't benefit from VRAM at all, since it doesn't have GDDR5. Only thing is that the PS4 has only 512mb of ddr3 in it to aid the vram
+Zilla Yes you´re right. That is exactly what I wanted to write here. I´ve seen a lot of videos about this issue and the advice was always the same. If you are using a AMD-APU without a dedicated graphics-card, use the fastest RAM your Board and the APU supports. It increases the graphics power significant.
Dieter Gerding One of the only reasons faster RAM is better.
+Zilla Yes, because APU's don't have vram like a dedicated GPU so they use RAM from your system and VRAM is faster than RAM. That's obvious.
Good info, thanks
Great job; thanks for the knowledge.
Thanks Linus, I found this video was very reassuring of my recent purchase of 16GB 1866 for my lga1155 gaming system. Seems pretty optimal.
Videos back then: The speed of the ram does not matter.
Videos now: COOLER MASTER'S MAKER 5 HARDLY MODULAR MODULAR CASE ONLY COSTS: £100,000,000!
Exactly.
@@Danilo85868 Present time (2019-01) RGB!
Oh how times have changed.
Something else that a lot of people won't tell you (and by people I mean the ones trying to sell us stuff) is the fact that most of the time RAM won't even function beyond 1333mhz unless directly OCd within the BIOS.
Is that so? Well i just ordered G.Skill Ares Series ram for 2133mhz. So what would I have to do to get the full use out of it again?
vespaman101
need to change the fsb or ram ratio, otherwise it run as stock 1333mhz
PTFuZi alright.
when i built my computer I noticed that same exact thing that at first it was only running 1333mhz and I had to go into the bios to change it from the default
You are indeed right, I checked mine and it was running at 1600, advertised 1866. Thanks for getting me to check :P
Thanks Linus. You've settled a question for me and I like your way of thinking when it comes to shopping for said RAM. A+!
Thank you very much, you answered all of my questions.
Watching in 2019 😄 linus was young and kind 😃
he is still kind tho
Watching in 2021 😳
High frequency RAM was needed for overclocking FSB some time ago (i.e. at socket 775 you need at least 1000 MHz DDR2 RAM (most common DDR2 was 800 MHz) to be able to run CPU at 500 MHz FSB - which was quite a common result with Wolfdale Core 2 Duo's)
yup exactly why i got 1600mhz lol.
Ubeogesh When buying my current rig I couldn't (or didn't dare) pull any more money from my parents and ended up with a Corsair DDR2-6400 CL4 kit since it clocked at over 1100 for many reviewers, but it turned out those fucks changed the chip manufacturer and the later modules, like mine, are stuck at exactly 1GHz. Should've gone for the dominator, I'm curious if my P5Q-E can go into 550s.
Good simple take on RAM. Keep it up :)
thank you you helped me a lot. I am scratching my head off to build a new PC and going part for a part and it's completly mind blowing. Thanks for clearing things up!
Dude
This was great information, I was about to add another 16GB of memory and I really don't need it.
M~
Wow, honestly I just watched this again after years. I actually like this video more than a lot of their "New office" stuff. It's just so much more genuine.
The authenticity degrades with time
good to know thank you for all your work i have looked to you for all most all my computer needs and the people you have on your forms are great thanks for what you do for us in giving the best info posible with true read outs and no bs
Good advice's! such worth listening... Thank You!
My 8GB 1600MHz RAM is fine for all of my gaming and I can use programs like After Effects without any issues too. Above 8GB I don't see as being too useful for gaming in my opinion.
There is literally no need for more then 8 gigs for gaming your right, we literally just a while back finally hit 8 gig game requirements, so i don't think it's going anywhere for a while
The only thing ive ever used more than 8 gigs for is a heavily moded civ 5 and anno 2070
chris unsell Actually yeah, some unsupported / optimised modded games use more RAM and VRAM than they should meaning you'll need 16GB and a 4GB card. But overall 8GB of RAM and a 2GB card is fine.
BaconAniimal Never say "x memory for this and that should be fine" or "you don't need more than x memory for this or that" ("this or that" is equivalent to "gaming or productivity", for example)... or you'll just look like a fool at some point, just like Bill G. did lol...
Besides, you can't predict scenario developments, such as running only certain types of games for now, but at some point getting interested in, or for a job, or any other reason getting involved in, for example, 3D modeling (3DSmax, Maya, ...) or especially in virtualization you run very quickly out of RAM way earlier than CPU power, where a lack of RAM will lead to massive swapping and slow-downs and even crashes of the host and/or client OS (depending on how you allocate RAM) - I speak of experience here.
Speaking about slow-downs... I read on one of the major review computer tech review sites where the latest GTX w/ 3GB VRAM in comparison to the Titan or latest AMD cards w/ 4GB+ VRAM was discussed... and, although this is still too costly for almost anyone, 4k gaming is coming and latest at that point (could be even now, as mentioned in the article, at high but below 4k resolutions in BF4) you'll "hit a wall" with GPUs
themax2go I know that for other things more RAM will be needed. But that's why I said for all of MY gaming 8GB of RAM and a 2GB card is fine for my uses, as I only game in 1920x1080 and occasionally try some video editing.
6 years latter and I thank you Linus, I'm having to do a cpu/motherboard exchange and I wanted to know if my current 16 gb of ram would run on it, its compatible but looking at the accepted frequencies 2133 / 2400 / 2666 / 2800 / 2933 / 3000 / 3200 / 3466 my current ram being a 2400 is leaning to the lower end. Thanks to this I know that it won't change much if anything
This is on an older platform, this does not reflect the same with more modern components
Thanks Linus! Awesome info...I learned something..

thank you so much, this was super helpfull!
That was some helpful insight, I wish I had watched this before spending more on high freq rams
How about an updated version of this vid? Seems like memory speed makes more of an impact (in games) today than it did back in the day.
Make sure these guys are actually trying out a frequency with the appropriate timings; One of the prominent older threads on LTT forums (MageTank's) actually tests bandwidth with the same timings and different frequency.
i decided to go for a 16gb ddr3 1600 ripjaws now. I remember having 4mb ram back 1997, to 1gb ram to 2gb ram to 4gb ram which is at their time is unnecessarily huge, but i've come to notice that almost every 1-2years i find a reason to upgrade double the ram size i needed. like my PC i always play this game so smoothly and all of a sudden went lag and system hangs up when alt tabbing and loading. i know 8gb is now the normal size, so i decided to go 16 just to make sure i wont need to upgrade for quite a while
DDR4 is coming out in a year at the earliest, so ddr4 will come out before you need 16gb ram.
but yeah, ddr4... i also recall the time when ddr2 was a thing and ddr3 just isnt worth it yet because it's latency and clock speed are just like ddr2's performance for the next year or so. I cant also upgrade because i have a laptop now hehe! It hurts to know that ddr4 is coming out while i still have ddr3
TheYellowGreenbean
You will need to upgrade motherboard and CPU for DDR4. At the moment only the new X79/Haswell -E 8 core CPUs will support ddr4.
16Gb will hold up for a while, and considering that 8Gb enough for most people, jumping to 16 is not a bad thing especially if poorly optimized games or demending applications use up at least 6-7gb of memory.
It is also recommended to buy a matching kit, so getting a 16gb kit that works together is better than getting 8gb and another 8gb later and risk having problems because the memory won't work together.
Some people run game servers, and easily use 8-10GB just to run it, so a 32Gb kit sometimes makes sense. Thats also enough for a RamDisk.
actually my problem is multitasking. I can play games or surf the web but not both at the same time. 4gb shows only 3gb used but whenever i alt tab system hangs up. 8gb solved my problem! I believe page file is the problem here as my game shows only 400mb used, but when i switch to 8gb is reached 1000+mb used and no lag at all! That's why i decided to go for a 16gb 8x2 kit so i can utilize some parts for RAMDISK or Samsung RAPID for my 840EVO ;) RAMS are getting more useful these days!
i got it YEAH! :D
Man, your vids always makes so much sense. I've taken a lot of advice that I've gotten from the, so I am officially subbing and liking the vids that I use for that advice. Something told me to check one of your videos for this. I figured that the difference wouldn't be as dramatic as it was looking on paper...Thank you, I believe that you just save me about 200 bucks.
Hey careful this is a old video, if you have an amd CPU then you will see a up to 15% difference/ improvement by getting faster ram
@@stefanvogel9206 Really? Maybe I need to look more into it. My CPU is AMD. Since My PC is still of the FM2 slot, I have an A10 6800k from the
A8 6500 that original came in it and the memory for that goes from DDR3 1330 to DDR3 2133. I also have an AMD 5500 XT 8gb gpu and the PC is maxed at 32gb of rom. You think the rom upgrade will be a big difference? I am also about to upgrade to an AMD 5700 XT 8gb gpu. Thanks for the heads up.
thanks mate, this comes in really handy for some who doesn't know much of these things
i had a g-skill 2133 8gb or ram (4x2) i downclocked it awhile ago to 1600mhz no performance loss
If one uses CPU with an integrated GPU, such as AMD A series, one would want to use RAM as fast as possible. Ultimately lots of MHz with as a low cl value as possible.
AMD A10, for instance, *loves* fast memory.
Its internal GPU really get a nice boost with fast memories. I went from 1600 MHz up to 2400 MHz (both at CL11) I got up to 10 frames per second *more* in 3D gaming. (Some games even got more than +10 fps)
If one uses dedicated graphics (Such as separate graphic cards), the difference won't be that noticeable, if at all.
Finally, someone who understands.
patrick broderick this reply doesn't show understanding its a statement with no support then an opnion
It's just fact...

as an example..? Where as the 4770k uses DDR3-1333/1600 @ ark.intel.com/products/75123
Robert Loyd The 4770k can handle 2400 depending on the processor speed, the official specs are a laughable evidence.
It just helped me a lot
WOW and Thanks ☺
Hey Linus, i really like these vids that feel more "home-ie" and relaxed. A set is cool, but this feels more natural :)
You have changed my decade old perspective about RAM speed 😂
Ram speed still matters, if it didn't we'll all by using the same speed ram and they wouldn't bother selling higher freq ram for a premium, this video is a bad review and he only used one game as a benchmark which is a major fail.
The actual fps performance varies from game to game. 1 game can yield no extra fps while some games my yield +35 It all depends on how a game utilizes ram.
"The results were not something I was expecting to see."
-Linus told me to do it.
Awesome video thanks Linus
@4:00 It comes down to compatibility. Some mainboards don't work with a certain combination of RAM in dualchannel mode while the CPU is overclocked. You have to either sacrifice speed or look for those RAM modules referenced by the board manufacturer.
i buy very standard boring RAM and this has always made for great functioning personal computers. however, i am more interested in aesthetics these days and will probably buy something more attractive next rig.
more benchmarks plz, with premier pro and AE
thank you. Earlier this year I built a new computer with a gigabyte 78 lmt MB that was listed as supporting 1333 ddr3 but it turns out it's rev6 which means it will run 1600. I was wonderinf if I needed new ram to replace my 1333 ram but you've shown me it's not necessary. I'm grateful for this video.
Man - I wish I could communicate like you do haha. Thanks for the video - very helpful :)
