PD Simplified : Rev Matching Explained | How To Do It

  • Rev matching is a super cool technique to help your motorcycle's engine deal with the strain of downshifting. Also called Blipshifting, it is bringing up engine revs before a downshift. 1. It can help prevent rear-wheel lockup, and the loss of control because of it. 2. The motorcycle sounds cooler when you do it right. In this Simplified, Shumi explains rev-matching and how to do it properly.

    Even though revmatching has become second nature for me, I still find it difficult to quickly (in 2s) downshift from 6th to 2nd when I suddenly spot an unmarked speed breaker, for instance. Successive smooth and quick downshifts is an art that every motorcyclist needs to master.

      Mono shock gives better handling and performance because dual shock has two shocks, so if one of them is bad, it’s a problem. But, dual shock handles bumps better and can take more load than mono-shock.
      And yeah, mono shock is more expensive to manufacture. This is why you’ll always see dual-shock on cheaper bikes.
      So, for the budget/cheaper bikes, manufacturers use dual shock to cut costs.

    The action of blip throttling is significantly tougher in a long stroke engine lke the Classics or CB350, where u have to rev the accelerator really long as the strokes are long ...

    • @arv1ndgr
      @arv1ndgr Před 2 lety +1

      In CB350 due to presence of slipper clutch, it can be done easily. I've been always doing it to reduce speeds or brake, atleast for last 6k kms ever since I learnt it
      One question though, I find engine braking remains very effective at higher RPMs. In case of CB due to its taller gearing, I often find myself in 4/5th gear and as I approach a speed braker, I'd have to get into 2nd. If I downshift sequential, It takes more time to brake but if I come directly to 2nd, I get very effective engine braking. I don't get to know as long stroke don't come with RPM metre. Which of the above is recommended?

      My R15M has a slipper clutch and I believe it definitely helps in both high rpm and low rpm downshifts. High rpm downshift is smoother with a throttle blips but for most of my below 3000 rpm downshifts I'd just downshift and let the clutch out smoothly and the gearbox works just as smoothly. Agressive throttle blips in low rpm, high gear downshift ( say from 5th to 4th) are just annoying in my opinion, I just don't see the need.

    I think rev matching is very useful in situation like you are hovering around 50kmph in 5th gear, and now you want to get a quick overtake in 3rd or even 2nd gear! Then the throttle blipping comes into the picture. To come for a complete hault, I downshift my gears around 3-4k rpm where engine manages the high downshift revs easily without blipping a throttle!!

    Sometime it's nice to downshift without blipping, you will break faster, you will change the attitude of the bike very fast and sharp turn with a bit of a "power-drift".... Not advisable for beginers, and you can lock up most slipper-clutches if you are hooliganing around or on the race track ....but if you are intent in using engine brake as an alternative to braking sometimes blipping is counter-productive. But blipping is a good technique for beginers so they will use the tools of the trade, now I ride without even thinking of blipping on the road.

    @johnhowells-vaughan5519 Před 2 měsíci

    Great explanation! But I have heard there is a downside to rev-matching, and that is to do with being faster and more efficient on the track. When you rev-match the front brakes are being squeezed and the action of blipping will pulsate the brakes ever so slightly and this can cause loss of time when racing as it's all to do with the fraction of seconds. There is race data that proves this and some race champions don't rev-match because of this. It's smoother to change down when you've slowed the bike down to the appropriate speed where there is no need to blip.

    Awesome video again! I got here after watching the quick shifter and autoblipper video. Had a question on why it doesn’t surge when you blip and I think this is being explained around the 5:50 mark. But here’s another question. If we are rev matching to 5,000 manually blipping, and in this example it goes to 6,000 rpm, and the clutch gets released around 5,000 rpm for that rev match, how does an autoblipper match it perfectly to the correct revs? My understanding of an autoblipper is that the throttle remains completely closed, you are on the brakes and all you do is click down gears and it’ll match revs for you, without physically pulling in thr clutch lever and then releasing it when the revs match.

    If you mess up revmatching, your bike will accelerate instead of deceleration. The trick here is to do it as quickly as possible,or you need to rev less to compensate for the change in rear wheel speed

    Say , for revmatching, I use the rear brake only while rev matching? Would that be okay? braking the front and blipping is a little complicated for me. Although I do not own a high cc bike, I would like to gradually learn this technique

    But in a city, day to day driving is not so useful. Definitely at times this comes in handy and is a good technique to learn. I use them in day to day driving in my RX 100.

    Great to see PD and Shumi brought up this topic... i have been doing it on my RTR200 by over 2 yrs and yes it took time to adjust but once you get hold of it..
