  • Senior Golf Tips from Legend Tom Watson
    when I'm asked about Senior Golf there are a few things I talk about before I even talk about the swing first thing is your equipment uh this is your friend a hybrid is your friend all the way from uh four five six seven eight hybrid you know get something which has a big sole to it like this so that if you hit a little bit behind it it's going to carry it into the ball and you're going to get the elevation you need the the problem with senior golf we don't get the ball elevated enough and obviously we don't hit very far elevation is the most important thing the second thing is the golf ball don't play a pro ball something don't do that play with as hard a golf ball as you possibly can you can't compress it anyway so make sure that that that hard ball will just jump off that club face and go go farther distance I talk to seniors about their grip and their setup mainly the grip has to be light it has to be light because you want to get your hands ACC active in the golf swing you can't turn your body very much but you have to keep your hands as active as possible to hit the ball you're going to you know 80% of your speed comes from your arms and hands and the senior golf is about 100% because your body really doesn't help you too much you can't you you can't get your body to do that so the thing I like to do you light grip pressure and in your stance narrow your stance up and pull the right foot back a little bit like this that helps you get a little bit of turn a little bit more turn with your restrictive turn as it is away from the ball like this and so you can get just a little bit behind it with your left shoulder just you know you can't get way behind with your left shoulder but you can get it the key is to get it as far back as you possibly can with light grip pressure then you just come in there and hit it and that's this is kind of what what it looks like it kind of goes and like that you know you're not using your body too much but you're using your hands don't be so hard on yourself that's the main thing the older I get uh the longer the golf courses get and uh you know moving up in the forward tea sometimes is fun for me I don't need to play those back tees anymore and force myself to hit three Woods into par fours or not reach the par fours the beautiful thing about the game of golf you can play it until the day you die so don't take it so seriously enjoy it and have fun the

    ...I'm new to golf at 74 years old (July 2023). This is undoubtedly the best, most level headed and straight forward advice for senior golfers I have heard yet. Tom Watson, you are a legend in your own time. Kudos to you sir...

    I'm 77 and started using the red tees because of lost distance. The USGA or the OGA decided to make 3 out of 5 par 5's at our course a par 4's because of that. It takes me 5 shot just to get to the green, so if I 1 putt, I still get double boggy. Not renewing my membership because I'm tired of getting shafted. On a different note, I have had the pleasure of watching and meeting Mr. Watson . Fantastic gentleman

    I am 65 and if you told me I had to choose just one golfer, past and present, to play one round with...for me it would be Tom Watson. I have never rooted for anyone or anything more than him that day at the age of 59, when he needed one more par on 18 to win the Open. So what does he do, a perfect drive and a perfect iron approach shot only to get the most unlucky bounce in the history of golf. But did he complain ? Nope, he carried on like the gentleman that he is.

    What a treat. BTW, at our club we have a 78 year old that almost won our Club Championship...he's so talented, and has lost little of his club head speed since turning 70, exactly for one of the tips that Tom pontificates; a narrower stance. Golf is so weird, but it is so enjoyable on those fantastic days when things are clicking, even for us older folks. Thanks Tom!

    15 short years ago, he really should have won his 6th British Open Championship, at 59 years of age. Incredible golfer.

      Yep. He hit a beautiful shot on 18 that landed 6 feet too far. Adrenaline, no doubt. One of the great shames in any tournament I can ever remember.

    Best short and sweet suggestions for seniors regardless of the age. He is so smooth and does not "force" a shot. Know your limitations and use those limitations to play smarter, less frustrating rounds. Stay within your limitations. You can beat the best of the slicers and hookers if you stay within yourself and play Your Own Game ! Putting and chips is where to focus your attention. Not power off the tee. :)

    This is such a great video for all senior golfers to watch! The only thing I would add, is to open up the front foot out a bit at address (if you have trouble following through). I have zero flexibility (old lower back injuries) so my foot being open is critical for me to finish facing the target (without tearing up my front hip and lower back muscles). This has also helped me create more club head speed through the ball 🍻

      @therealgolfsecrets  Před 4 měsíci +2

      That is a great tip Sir. Tom Watson encourages the front foot to flare out a bit with the driver to help turn through easier. Thank you for sharing with the community.

    Many CZcams instructors advise senior golfers to work on their flexibility and strength. As a senior golfer, you can still turn (watch carefully Tom's demo swing), but you have to work at it. If you're not prepared to do that, resign yourself to less distance as the years go on... I love Tom Watson, he's an amazing golfer, "you're never too old to turn safely", as demonstrated in this instructional video (and yes, I know, he's a club pro, and Tom is Tom, and not everyone can be as fit and agile as Garry Player) 🤩 czcams.com/video/hzOcLOfUD7U/video.htmlsi=nPBhUyR8mcVBpCjR

    I always thought you had to use a soft golf ball

    • @therealgolfsecrets
      @therealgolfsecrets  Před 4 měsíci +1

      A soft golf ball is great for feel around the greens. However, for senior golf the biggest obstacle is distance. A hard ball is a big benefit for slow swing speeds off the tee. The key is finding a hard ball that doesn't feel like a rock when you're chipping around the greens. I personally like The callaway Warbird golf ball to be a decent compromise. It's a hard ball but not bad around the green. Thanks for commenting.

    BigTip: Under a tree, OR, restricted back swing.
    Don't be scared to try this.
    I once putted a ball almost two hundred yards.
    Listen, take your DRIVER, yes, driver, choke down to the bottom of the grip, a try a stern, hard, convicted, putting stroke.
    I have been under a tree, limited back swing, opened my stance, and sliced the ball around a tree.
    THE ROLL is unbelievable.
    First, take your driver on the putting green and get used to it. Then go to the driving range and try a stiff swing from three o'clock to nine o'clock.
    INSTEAD of punching out in the fairway, punch out DOWN the fairway. If Tiger can chip out of the fringe with a three wood,
    C'MON man, have fun, its just a game.
    And, THANK YOU, Tom Watson.
    Two regrets, wished I could have met, Payne Stewart, and Tom Watson, being from Mo. myself. Now a Buckeye transplant.

    John 3:16 KJV
    16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
    1 Corinthians 15:1-4
    The Resurrection of Christ
    15 Now, brothers and sisters, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached to you, which you received and on which you have taken your stand. 2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
    3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance[a]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures
