  • Amatonormativity - the social expectation that we need romantic relationships to be happy - is harmful to all of us, regardless of relationship status. This talk discusses this overlooked social norm and the ways in which it is harmful to a range of groups, from aromantic individuals who aren’t interested in dating to singles looking for a partner to people in happy romantic partnerships. Most importantly, the talk also addresses what we can do to mitigate these harms and strengthen our relationships, romantic and otherwise. Riya Bolander (they/them) is a senior from Marshfield, Wisconsin double majoring in psychology and vocal performance. In their time at Binghamton, they have been involved in a wide range of areas on campus, from performing in operas to working as an orientation advisor. Currently, they work as a peer mentor lead at the Q-Center, a TA in the choir program, and as Soprano section leader at a local church. They are a part of the scholars program, the Lim Lab, and serve as an eboard member for SA organization Sound of Binghamton. Outside of academics, they enjoy singing, reading, and spending time with their cats. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
