A friend of mine's mother bought him a PC in the 90's. It had some early kind of Windows as a display and my friend was like, "what do you know about these?" And I knew practically nothing. I knew you could get games for them but I don't think any computer shop near where we lived had any PC games for sale. I didn't really get into PC's until roughly '96 going to a friend's house and he had a PC, Quake and the internet. That night changed a lot of things.

Absolutely loved Stunts as a child. Also did what you did, building tracks and trying to beat them with friends. Not sure if our version had some sort of cheat or mod activated, but seem to remember the Audi Quattro being by far the fastest car of the game.

Ultima 6 was one of my favorite games and still remains one I go back to now and then. It was the Elder Scrolls of its time, with just so much time that could be spent doing whatever in the sandbox RPG world.
Firing cannons at guards, gathering chairs to fill the royal dining room's tables, making a 'fake house' out of endtables outside the drawbridge because you could rest there, giving peasants money and cloth as I imagined it helped them, moving crates and barrels towns away to my storage room - and this was all just junk that had little to do with the actual game. So many hours spent here it was pretty nutty how much time I didn't do anything to push the story, but that was fun, too!
I know a lot of people that preferred 7, and I enjoyed the hell out of it, too - but 6 was always my favorite of the main games. If only the dungeons could have looked a bit more varied instead of red-brown ;)

The Secret of Monkey Island was and still is one of the best P&C adventures ever made, equaled only by other LucasArts titles and Discworld games.
Rick Dangerous 2, Golden Axe, Prince of Persia and Xenon 2 are also timeless classics, as fun now as they were back then.
I played Stunts quite a lot, given in mind that I don't usually like driving games.
Rise of the Dragon is one of those adventure games that I've played, liked, and never finished because of their difficulty. I might give it another go sometime.
And that's mostly it for me. I'm not a fan of simulations, Ultima titles, and GoldBox RPGs (even though I've read every single one of the novels they are based on). I started liking Heroes from the HoMM2, and Wizardry from it's eight installment (epic games, both).

Red Barron is an absolute blast to play & actually was quite impressive for 1990 but most of all it was fun & that’s what counts the most. Absolutely one to play.
The Secret of Monkey Island! What a game! It’s so much fun & has been one of the most influential games of all time, even if it’s influence is a little obscure today. If you haven’t played it you absolutely must! It’s available to play on modern systems.
Covert Action is a true hidden gem that’s criminally overlooked today.
Stunts is another highly influential game & a highly impressive one for it’s 3D world & physics engine. It did take a bit of beefy machine to run well in the day & to be honest there’s a bit too much of the physics & damage engine & not enough of an arcade-ness for me personally. Still, as you said the level editor changes everything.
Silent Service II is fun & definitely focuses on the right elements of gameplay.
Prince of Persia is another one of the GOAT & *highly influential* games, which is why the series still exists. I’m weird so my favourite version is on the Sega Game Gear. So there. 😄
Never played Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday? Looks like a blast in it’s own way?
Kings Quest V! Wow! The hits keep coming this year don’t they? March of the Ants is random comedy gold!
Never played Midwinter? It’s certainly interesting for the time?
Wing Commander! Good grief 1990 was an extraordinary year! It can be tricky to get running in DOSBox as it’s timed to processor cycles, not the RTC as many PC’s didn’t have one back then, so as you destroy more enemies the game speeds up but there are plenty of guides online to getting it running perfectly.
The Oregon Trail is yet again massively influential & in spite of it’s simplicity it’s still fun today. I have one of those obscure, cheap handhelds from Target in America that would have been cheap if shipping & customs fees to the UK hadn’t been more than the device & it really is 1 of the most fun ways to play, with a combination of Mac & DOS graphics from the time & dedicated controls. The original, original version didn’t have graphics as such because it was played on paper printout from a terminal, that’s how old the game is.
    No you didn’t get my attention, that’s why I haven’t commented here… 😄
Jetfighter II is definitely influential, it’s like a proto Air Combat (AKA: Ace Combat) & was really impressive in it’s day but it’s still surprisingly playable now.
Rick Dangerous II is just fun. If you love platformers it’s a no-brainer. Although I know it from the Amiga.
I know Xenon 2 from the Amiga too & I don’t think it’s a patch on the original. Xenon (1) was an early demo of what the Amiga could do & felt like such a step up from the 8bit micros of the time, partly because of some very low quality voice samples.😄
Golden Axe looked & sounded great on Amiga & PC but I’m going to commit sacrilege again & say, it gets too samey by about half way through. One of my favourite conversions is the Wonder Swan Color, partly because it’s one of the best arcade conversions on the platform & partly because the small screen hides a multitude of sins. I dropped a backlit IPS display in my WSC a couple of years ago (FYI: by far the easiest retro console display upgrade, trust me I’ve done nearly all of them) & the colours pop like they belong on a modern display.
What a year! Even some of the games I didn’t comment on because they aren’t my thing helped shape the games we have today & deserve to be remembered. Fun video, thanks!

      @OldAndNewVideoGames  Před 23 dny +1

You know, I can get behind Prince of Persia being best on a portable system. Even one that could run for an hour off the batteries before they would die. Which would be kinda spot on, as in POP you have one hour. ;)
And clearly, I've got no attention from you. ;)
Have you ever considered making some of those retro upgrades videos and posting them on YT? Could be fun.
Also, I've one more video for the "Essential DOS" series and will be jumping on something else. But before that I've two other videos lined up. One, I've recorded voice overs for already, and 2nd for Early Windows 1999. And there are some real bangers in that one!

@@nicholsliwilson Oh, come on, dude! I mean, I'm not gonna push you or tell you to do something, but if you decide to, let me know. I'll watch that! :) And if you worry about stuff being disorganised, you've seen my videos... I jump from subject to subject, I have a constant train of thought that comes God knows from where, and the randomness is the main theme in what I do. And yet it works. Your should too, cause why not? I've spoke to you for a long while now, and while sure, we've never met in real life, you seem like a cool stand up fellow, especially by what you write on twitter, so I'm not sure how someone in their right mind would judge you by it. :)
Oh, unless you mind comments like the few gems I got last few days. First was "can you make an effort to speak better english ? I dont understand anything you say and not even google because the auto generated subtitles dont work" which you know, is all kinds of mean. I mean, sure, I'm not a native speaker, I think I may have slight ADHD cause when I get carried over I do speak really fast, I tend to invent words that don't exist, and things may get lost in all that. But that's just mean to be mean. Then there was this "You must be from a third world country back in the 90s with a computer or something", which I've no idea how to answer, so I just won't. And there's more where these came from. But for every one of these, there's those like the ones from you and hundreds other folks who are really nice. I could focus on those negative one and let them spiral me, but like US famous philosopher Ms Taylor Swift said: "And I ain't trying to mess with your self-expression, But I've learned the lesson that stressin', And obsessin' 'bout somebody else is no fun, And snakes and stones never broke my bones so"
So, I don't and I focus on these that matter. My advice is to not worry and give it a go, if you feel like it. You have a lot to offer. And many people may want to do what you did, and don't know how. :)

@@OldAndNewVideoGames that’s very kind of you, thank you. I was being flippant about being disorganised & the real reason I’m not planning on making those videos is simply that I’ve already upgraded them all. I don’t do it for a living, it’s for my enjoyment & I just don’t need to buy another console, or rather consoles & mod-kits for them as they’re done.
Seriously, this sounds like the kind of “advice” your mum would give you as a kid but when people throw hate at you like that it’s because *they* are unhappy & trying to take it out on you. The haters are the one with a problem, not you. & FYI: Your english is excellent. You enunciate your words clearly at a calm speed, the person who told you to speak better English is struggling with your accent when the rest of us are not, so again it’s their problem, not yours.

Ultima 6 is most important in your view? interesting... i do own most of the games up till 9th but like Might and Magic have not given them enough whirl... i kinda got bogged down right at the start with how complex they are from the get go. i shalt put them in my queue to play again.
Dammit you are not supposed to speaketh the nameles's name thats why he is nameless! (i imagine as definitively not the nameless in question XD)
Stunts was made by Geoff Carmmond was it not? you know the fella who singlehandidly pushed the (than conssidered simulation, nowdays simcade) into the mainstream and someone who i personaly conssider as someone who made me like F1 (at least when t still was F1 ... decades ago ) man who released four games in his grand prix series and managed to stand up to likes of ubisoft and EA for few games at least. Shame about the 4th being bit weaker (also remaking the menu interface was horrible idea - one of best perks of the first 3 was that you could pick drivers for hotseat at a glance by just clicking number on their car)... sorry i had a point at some point but it seems pointless at this point. what i was getting at was the mate behind stunts is legend and may be responssible of how we percieve any racing games today. i mus find this stunts for my own experiemnts.
Prince is very addicting, people behind it knew that they had hit, i'd wager, from very early on. Also 1'990 dose sound bit late for its PC debut but i wont question it, ports can be years off for no descerable reason.and yes the first time i rant into new screen at full speed only to find myself falling down multiple screens as result did teach me patience too... not that it stuck but you know game tried .)
(defenders of Rome) i would not say it is strange, that would be hardly only time that very thing happened. i mean Darkstone i still call Dungeon Siege 0 it is THAT close (to the first one, third has nothing to do with the style of the preceeding 2 games and second i feel is just bad). Very few games get over specific idea perfectly on first try.
Nothing wrong with wanting to be hospitalised just make sure to go to decent hospital... some madhouses i swear have madder staff than patients.
(Golden Axe) man it is difficult to describe how ubiquitous that game was even for someone like myself who is no fan of beat'em ups even for someone who practicaly came to PC years after this i had no less than two itterations of the original golden axe, i seen it on every computer that was owne dby gamer in that era all the way untill 96 or 97 when windows finaly took over fuly. that game was quite literarly everywhere and i strongly suspect it has to do with its addictive nature.
damn glad i dont have it on my PC right now for if i did i would not be able to waste hours on playing random nonsence it would be golden axe time all the time XD
ahrem i need to do somethign about my easily addicted to things personality.
(King's bountry) wait what?!' i thought homam was offshoot of might and magic role playing games... also i do own later king bounties ... two games from like 2'000s... yet i never thought to look for the older ones back in the 90s . man you blew my tiny mind again. guess thats going on the list of to play games too ... owning homam 1-3 as well as hero hour and offcourse conssidering the IIIrd best turn based strategy of its ilk (Desciples II coming dangerously close for i love its macabre but damn is it just not as good as the HOMAM III... i mean just the every turn starts with sunrise animation the sounds are on point ... its just too good).

As much as Geoff was cool and talented, he had nothing to do with Stunts afaik.
Golden Axe was amazing for the time, and it's a classic, but it's not a game I would've elect to play all the way through alone.
Heroes of Might and Magic is an offshoot of Might and Magic, but the gameplay mechanics came straight from King's Bounty, which was also New World Computing's game. :) They've created the frame, and then polished it, filled it with substance and lore, and the legend was born. Which is ironic on more than one level, as King's Bounty's remake was actually called "The Legend" too.

@@OldAndNewVideoGames the legend and crossroads are ones i own, just played legend thusfar. oddly enough dose not remind me much of Homam but i also only played up to fourth.
The one that was atrocious and utterly farcical. oh yes and also that came after the pinnacle of the series HOMAM III.
Quite interesting to see how the whole thing came together. he NWC had on game series bristlling with lore and one where they loved the mechanics and they rightully saw chance to combine the two into quite succesfull series of strategies.
And yes i just conssider HOMAM III and Desciples II to be in their own league when it comes to quality and story. no other games in the genre ever poked my sensibilities and gameplay preferences so well. Hilariously before these i never thought i would have liked turn based strategies with construction of empire. but now its on top of my bes games ever .)
