    Early 90s VGA graphics were the best.. Hand crafted pixel art in full color! As a kid just seeing another scene was the actual reward for me when progressing through a game

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames This is exactly one of the big reasons why 3D was always so hit an miss, and why pre-rendered 3D tended to be a _lot_ better. Myst still looks amazing - sure, the textures are tiny and the models are very low poly... but they put everything together to look great. Yeah, Quake was a great _technological_ achievement... but didn't look very good, had to make awful compromises in gameplay and wasn't really a very good game overall. Duke Nukem 3D was "outdated"... but brought us interesting, detailed, hand-crafted worlds. And the line of games on the Build engine proved nicely that it worked extremely well. It allowed the _game designers_ to craft the world, rather than be bound by arbitrary limitations like Euclidean geometry or "real" lighting.
      And full 2D gives you a _huge_ amount of control over what you put on the screen. Even today, I dare you to show me a 3D game that looks more amazing than something like Tyrian :D It took quite a while for games like Legend of Grimrock to finally improve on the feel of games like Dungeon Master. Of course, where 3D can really shine is smooth animation. In practice, it's crazy how few 3D games really put effort into _making_ it shine, outside of simulation games, of course.
      I expect it's going to be much the same with generative AI nowadays. There will be the poor slop that just chugs out random pointless junk (like a _lot_ of games using procedural generation)... and there will be those who put a lot of effort into making things fit together, hand craft the outputs... or push it to the brink of insanity for fun :D

    I loved so many of these old games. Seeing Digger again definitely stirred nostalgic childhood memories. BC's Quest for Tires was another simple game which takes me back to the 80's.
    You learned to accept the pastel colors of CGA graphics when it was your only option. I managed to clock hundreds of hours in F-19 Stealth Fighter despite the poor quality of the graphics my machine could support. Legacy of the Ancients was a fun & challenging top-down RPG. By the time games like Conqueror AD 1086 arrived, we thought graphics were cutting edge.
    The huge difference between then and now is old games would reward you for being clever, or patient, or for exploring those nearly impossible to reach nooks & crannies. The developers often appreciated the fact a gamer would play and replay a title before buying another.

    Nice video and a good idea for one. I like that it focused on the technology and not so much the individual games. To me, VGA was the pinnacle of art in PC games. 256 colors were enough for artists to draw just about anything that they wanted and 320x200 was a low enough resolution that they could hand draw every scene. With SVGA, I always got the impression that artists didn't have time to meticulously draw 4x the pixels, so SVGA games often didn't look as detailed or used 3D models and rendering to make it easier, which made them look less hand drawn. I think that it's no coincidence that just about all modern "pixel art" games aim for a pixel density similar to 320x200. It's easy to work with by hand and is what so many of us have nostalgia for.

    • @OldAndNewVideoGames
      @OldAndNewVideoGames  Před 19 dny +1

      Also, low res 256 colours just looks satisfying. Every pixel and colour are well planned and pre-prepared to assure the best possible quality. Many of the early high res games just looked like cartoon made out of filled with colour vectors. Which is OK, but not as nice. :)

      @Osprey850 Před 19 dny +1

      @@OldAndNewVideoGames Yeah, that's what I was getting at. With many early SVGA games, it looked like the artists drew the outlines and then filled in the sections with solid colors with a paint bucket tool, instead of carefully drawing in details and shading. That's why they often looked more like cartoons, as you said.

    Prior to the era of the CGA, PC clone gamers were playing games on green or amber monochrome monitors.
    But I can't remember if we had video cards yet or if video cards came with the cga era. But I do know for a fact we were already network gaming with monochrome color games. And we were already playing online, mostly text based games.
    I was there for the CGA to EGA to VGA evolution. And yes the C64 and Amiga ruled for a time but PC clones eventually caught up.
    It was the advent of the cd that changed everything in desktop gaming. My favorite PC games of all time were SVGA CD games.
    SVGA CD games in my opinion are the true golden era of PC gaming. The art was true art and characters were given voice.
    The video card, the audio card, and the CD all together were the best canvases for gaming development and design of the 1990s.

    CGA isn’t as pretty as later standards but you have to start at the beginning & whilst I agree that CGA games are generally ugly it was a starting point that lead to EGA. Also naming your characters “Stinky” & “Poopy” was pretty much a requirement back then.
    VGA was a *massive* step up & it’s immediately obvious when you see it post CGA/VGA. Also yes, my favourite games from that era are obviously VGA.
    As you pointed out SVGA came hand in hand with supporting technologies that made it possible, notably the drive to increase the amount of dedicated video RAM. Now if someone can just explain why 2.5MB graphics RAM was so common on laptops for a while? Seems arbitrary? 😄
    Short but to the point video, thanks! You’ve summed it up pretty well in a concise & to the point video without getting bogged down by what 1 game or another did.

      CGA was pretty good in that low res 16 color mode, and would be acceptable at the time in 4 colors too, if it would allow for use of any colors and not just particular pre-set palettes. That said, it was necessary for creation of EGA, and everything that came after. So, while I'm not a fan, I don't mind it, especially that I experienced it years later, as when it was popular, I had C64 and then Amiga. So, I was all good on the front of graphics. ;)
      Some of my all time faves are SVGA, but if I was to honestly stack them against VGA, there's many more from the VGA era.
      I honestly don't know how to answer the question. In part because I've never heard of it. It's curious though and I may read up on it later. :)

My personal biggest gripe with EGA was that there was no good flesh color so most human characters were rendered in some kind of garish neon pink. I have a soft spot for the green/brown/yellow CGA palette though, I think it suits games like Digger really well. I remember playing Monkey Island 2 in EGA mode on my best friend from school's PC which used a higher resolution and tons of dithering to approximate the VGA graphics. When his dad finally got him a VGA card, I was blown away. VGA made the PC such a gaming powerhouse back then.

      Yep, VGA not only displayed 256 colours but had a gigantic palette, so pretty much all colours were available to approximate anything we could find in life. And yeah, EGA was not great cause it still relied on pre-set palettes, which was just stupid. But I'm no engineer, I can't tell you why they went that way. I'm sure there was a reason. Probably it was cheaper. ;) Still I like to compare games that had all three CGA, EGA and VGA releases. And if they also came out on Amiga, that's even more fun. :)

    I've been told that the reason do many games used the default EGA palette was because those 16 colors were the same as the 16 colors on CGA cards, and apparently many monitors of the time could only display those colors. So they were used to remain compatible with existing monitors.

    I'm positively surprised - usually when youtubers are making attempt to do "a different kind of video than usual" it's mediocre at best, but yours was very entertaining and well made.
    Seems that I was quite fortunate, as my first contact with PC games was in 1997/1998, so mostly titles with SVGA and VGA graphics (even playing in older games they were mostly VGA titles). In some cases I can deal with EGA graphics, CGA though is killing my eyes. I like this video, I think it's an interesting subject to talk about. The advances in graphics are really visible especially in games with multiple versions, like you showed in the beginning.
    If I may, I'd like to add that a good graphics trick to make an image look like it had more colour was dithering. I saw it used pretty well on EGA games.
