'We'd hire him': Florida jogger detained for fitting burglar description, deputies apologize

  • (Video: Volusia County Sheriff's Office)
"Wrong place -- wrong time," said Joseph Griffin, a Black man who was detained by Florida deputies as they looked for someone wanted in a burglary.
It happened last week when Griffin, while out on a run, was stopped by Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputies. The tense encounter between the jogger and deputies "deserves recognition" for how everyone handed it, said the sheriff, who even offered Griffin a job.
"You're not in any in trouble or anything, there's, uh, a burglary that happened -- you kind of fit the description," the responding deputy told Griffin.
"Really?" Griffin responded. He was wearing a white tank job and black shorts.
The real suspect's arrest can be seen at the very end of the bodycam video, deputies say.

What you see on social medias is not the norm. You always have to keep that in mind.
Even this one was arguably uploaded because it goes from the norm to positive. Usually it goes from the norm to negative though.
Never trust social media. It only uploads things that are not normal because normal is not interesting. If you take social media as average your world view will be fucked up beyond repair in all sorts of ways.

I'm white, and I've been detained before just bc I matched the original description of a crime. I was given the exact same treatment.
If you ACTUALLY think the average cop is out there "just tryina kill someone" then you need serious mental help.
Most people, including cops, don't EVER want to shoot, let alone kill, someone.
Consider this, many cops are Christian. And Christian's are EXTREMELY against killing, unless it's to protect yourself and/or your family.
Cooperate, and be respectful, and if you did nothing wrong and you cooperate, then you have nothing to worry about.
The only people who get scared of cops or resist cops are people who are breaking the law in one way or another.
Even if you did nothing wrong, if you start resisting and not cooperating, then you might very well wind up in a bunch of trouble, and maybe even in a box.
It's not complicated, and it's not about race.

The most important part of the interaction is the start. The FIRST thing the law enforcement officer (LEO) did when addressing the man was calmly TELL him WHY he was stopping him (REASONABLE ARTICULABLE SUSPICION; he details the description given of a nearby burglar suspect). The LEO did not escalate the situation; he did not begin the interaction with his weapon drawn, presume the man to be a threat to LEO or public safety, fear for his life, or start barking orders like “Stop! Show me your hands! Turn around! Get on the ground!”-and hypothetically, if someone, uniformed or otherwise, suddenly appeared and began yelling any of those commands (“lawful” or not) at you, wouldn’t your first thought be something akin to “Huh?, “What the hell?”, “Why?”, or even “Run!” (Fight, Flight, Freeze, Fawn); and the LEO did not rush up to the man intent on physically apprehending him (not reaching out to grab the man’s wrist, arm, or other part of his person) or taking him down. The LEO seemed patient and addressed this man with the PRESUMPTION OF INNOCENCE (“innocent until proven guilty”). The man’s immediate willingness to offer proof of his identification without being asked may have also contributed a large part to the nature of the encounter. From my experience with military operations and personnel, having/showing proof of identity is a norm so it was probably reflexive on his part. Glad that the man was able to make it home.

There were a lot of black guys sitting in the back waiting their turn, every single one of them were charges while whites walked. Those guys laughed and said to me after in the back while processing. You really thought you were going to get justice??? They said it’s a revolving door, it’s how they make money. I don’t think that judge was fair, not only my case, but other cases. In a perfect world all judges are uphold the law without prejudice. That day in traffic court was the real world, so was the traffic stop. I did not mention this before, the cop followed me, he had his brights on and I couldn’t see who it was, I was in a rural area, all white so this is why it all happened. Most of my friends are white and I lived in a mostly white area. Our world is imperfect, there are some in law enforcement, and the justice system that have issues. But there are many good, fair and balanced people in authority as well. We seem to be doing little to weed out the bad ones. See it through the cops eyes man, see it through this black man's eyes. STFU telling him I'm right there with you, you aren't a black man and obviously aren't anywhere with the man you are detaining and the cop basically just tried to say that it is the fault of the unarmed black man for getting killed by cops. I'm not saying that cops are always at fault but this guy is going to tell him not to pull the race card. They called my mom, asked if I just came from there, and finally let me go after 30 minutes. I was late to practice and my friend had so kindly informed the team so I got the whole "ooooooooooooo" when walking in....

Based on his demeanor throughout the entire ordeal, I strongly suspect he has a pretty solid reputation in the community. I know it's just speculation, but even if someone who knew him happened to pass during that window when he was handcuffed and got a good enough look at him to recognize him he may have gotten some interesting questions, but I bet most people believed him once they heard the whole story. And while I'm sure it was extremely inconvenient and nerve-wracking, if he looks at it with a positive outlook he can definitely say at least he got a good story out of it.
