I've seen more broken down Ford F-150's on the side of the road than anything else; and I'm not talking about the older ones; I'm talking about the newer ones. Since you wound up getting a Ford, you should have grabbed the F-250, that's Ford's real thoroughbred. That truck is a champ, about as reliable as a Tundra. Good luck with that turbo charged hairdryer in that F-150 man.

I am not American but I live in the states and I own both Ford Taurus and Toyota Camry. The Ford is more comfortable, very reliable (engine and tranny both going strong) but sucks on gas mileage. The Camry is lighter, again reliable, but not very rooted to the ground but is great on gas. I dont think it is fair to make sweeping statements on any, you need to maintain both, regular oil changes etc l, watch out for noises, don't drive them like racing cars, get small problems fixed on time and you should be golden with any car. My Taurus has 150K miles on it and the Camry has 36K miles on it.

My biggest complaint is the location of the high failure rate parts such as the starter taking 8 hours to change but at 350,000 miles, that original starter really lasted a long time. I think you will Love your Tundra. I have a 2014 SR double cab 4.6 ltr V8 2wd with 112,000 miles and I feel like I’m just now breaking it in. The payload on the 4.6 2wd is actually larger than the 5.74x4 because of the vehicle weight. The 4.6 is as quick, some say quicker, in 80-90 % of driving situations as well. Either way, you made the right choice for all the right reasons. If you level up the front end, match custom 18x9 +18 wheels with 295/70R18 tires, tint the windows, add a step up rail, and tint the headlights, and get rid of the badges and stickers you’ll have an absolute badass dream truck, in my humble opinion. Congrats!

Toyotas are the best you will love it. I may be biased but there's a reason they're so reliable is because they don't really change too much on them. Every year almost every other truck brand changes something with the engine. They don't have enough time to perfect it. The tundras engine hasn't changed since 2007. Yes it may not have the most horsepower or torque as other trucks but its enough for a half ton. They've had 10-11 years to perfect that engine and I feel like they pretty much have. Some guy a couple years ago put 1,000,000 miles on a tundra and toyota gave him a brand new truck so they could tear it apart and see how well the truck held up for 1 mil miles.

I purchased a 2017 Tundra last February for all the exact same reasons. I previously owned a Tacoma and wanted bigger for towing. I seriously wanted at V8 Ford but like you got totally frustrated with building what I wanted AND finding it on a dealer lot within 200 miles of my home. I gave up and went with a Tundra because everything I wanted and needed to tow was standard with the truck. I view the "no changes done" to the truck design for many years as a guarantee of continued reliability.

I had a 2011 F-150 XLT 5.0. I will say I loved the front seats. But, I had NOTHING but quality problems with drive train bearings, 4 wheel drive actuators components, heater blend door motor failure. Had rubbing noise up front when cold. When the transmission shifted to 4th gear in the winter there were 4 times I thought the whole rear end fell off the truck. I Got rid of it at 67,000 miles before transmission failure. I had to press legal action to get ford to honor their drive train warranty on the 4wd Actuators (A $650 dollar repair). I won in the end. No more Fords for me. I have had my 2016 tundra 4x4 SR for 1 year it has 22,000 miles on it. There have been NO issues with this truck. The 5.7 has incredible power. The transmission shifting is so smooth and much better than the ford. The gas mileage is only slightly lower in reality. That's a small price to pay for a quality drive train THAT WORKS AND HOLDS UP. Reliability is a factor that so many of the reviews give little attention to. They are all about specs and options and base price. What about resale value? The Tundra definitely has that going for it as well. I have total peace of mind with this vehicle. Ford does not offer THAT option! I love The Tundra!

Have had 4 F150’s and ran great. Comfy and reliable. Only thing that wore out on em at 200k miles is a water pump, tires, and batteries. I did however get a great deal on my old 2004 King Ranch work truck with over 200k miles (traded it and got $15k for it. Great resale huh?) and got talked into slightly used but sexy Tundra 4x4 (had lift and awesome wheels) and love it. But I do hate gas MPG and it doesn’t handle as well as Ford. I am still a Ford guy but I do love my Tundra as well.

Couldn’t agree more. Especially on the reliability of the proven V8. Carbon build up is an issue with turbo charged vehicles. I have a 2014 Limited with 78k miles. No mechanical problems at all. Only issue is the interaction between my iPhone and the infotainment system. Sometimes it will reboot its self. Hoping to get 300 plus miles out of my Tundra.

Just bought my truck yesterday, 2012 toyota tundra. Saw it, and bought it that day. Absolutely love it so far. Tons of aftermarket mods on it. Setup exactly how I wanted. Came from my 2002 ford f-150 king ranch. My f-150 had just cost 3K in repairs it was worth 6500$ at the time. Right afterwards it needed more repairs. I just couldn't keep doing it. So I traded it in towards the tundra for 3K.

I own a 2007 Tundra (for the last 12 years!). I have not had a major repair besides the recalls a few years ago. I tried to tell a good friend of mine not to buy his 2014 F150 but he didn't listen. His truck has been in the repair shop more than I have brought my truck for regular maintenance.... OK I exaggerated a little bit, but you get the picture.

I was in a similar predicament. I bought a 14’ SVT Raptor in Ruby Red. It’s a beast!! I was gonna go new and then did my research on the Gen 1’s. In my opinion it’s the way to go if you learn what to look for and get into a lower mile one. I test drove everything and like you I wanted the simplicity in a V8. Nice truck though, Toyota was my alt choice if I was going new.

I had a 2016 Tundra Crew Cab SR5 4x4 5.7 and it was a great truck. I paid 36k for it and sold it a year later with 10k miles to a whole sale partner of Kelly Blue Book for 35k. I got a great deal on it and put nicer wheels and tires on it but even with that the resale value on it was amazing. I chose the Tundra for many of the same reasons, the Tundra has way more features that I value for the price compared to the F150. A similarly equipped F150 was about 5k to 8k more than the Tundra at the time. Many of the statistics are skewed because Ford sells a ton of fleet vehicles and Toyota does not. I am a fan of the F150, I had one for years and it was a great truck. I also loved the Tundra, only sold it because I needed a car more than a truck. Great choice though! Hope you enjoy it as much as I did! Get a TRD supercharger!!!

Good ideas. Were you concerned about mpg? Could you opt for different rear end ratios for better mpg? If so, would you still have had enough towing power? How heavy is your trailer and load? Thanks.

  • @Dylan_Miller

I bought a 2007 Tundra 4x4 Crewmax with 67k miles two years ago for 25k and it's an amazing truck for the price. I looked at both Ford and Chevys in the 2007-2011 year range that fit my budget and they were no where near as nice, big, powerful or quality as the Tundra. Looking at the interior of the other trucks compared to the Tundra was a joke. They felt cheap and had no where near as much room inside compared to the Tundra (disclaimer: I did purchase the crewmax). When I got in the Tundra and drove it everything just felt right.
My dad who owns a $70,000 Ford F250 has said that he enjoys driving my truck more than his and would buy one if he didn't need the towing capacity of the diesel. Long story short they're a great truck with a lot of value. The only downside is the 5.7L V8 that I have guzzles fuel and gets 12mpg in town and about 16.5 freeway. However, its a small price to pay for how great of an experience I've had running this truck. If I had the chance to buy again I would get the Tundra again without question.
Congrats on your truck man. It looks really nice! The front grill of the 2018 looks awesome!

I was considering an F150 vs a Tundra.
Bought a Tundra!!! I've had it for a year...planned to put a camper on the 6.5ft bed...but now I'm selling it.
To buy a Tundra crewmax!!! I changed my mind on a camper so now cab space is my priority vs bed space.
Tundras are hard to find in the Tahoe Reno area....well sub $40k anyway lol.
