I do like that sometimes different languages go compluetely different directions. In French Deerling is Vivaldaim because Vivaldi composed The Four Seasons, and Sawsbuck is Haydaim who composed The Seasons

-The legendary birds which all evoke a god of some sort : Articuno is Artikodin, Zapdos is Électhor and Moltres is Sulfura (which is an Egyptian god rather than a norse one)
-The genies which also references (for the most part) gods : Tornadus is Boréas from the greek god of the north wind, Landorus is Démétéros from Demeter, Enamorus is Amovénus and Thundurus is Fulguris (fulgur is the latin word for lightning)
-Basculin and Basculegion are Bargantua et Paragruel, referencing giants from French literature.
-Eternatus is Éthernatos, which not only reinforces the Thanatos part but also adds the french word for Aether into the mix.
-Beedrill is Dardargnan which is made up of many elements: First there's Dard, the french word for stinger, second there's Dare-dare, an expression meaning "in a hurry", and finally there's D'Artagnan a member of the Three Musketeers.
Say what you want about the french names, at least they didn't name the rock golem "Golem".

I love having some French pokémon name recognition, some of them are great despite most of them still being strange or silly.
Being a Bilingual pokemon fan means I have to memorize the names in both languages, and it’s always fun to see how different they end up being.
Tangela being "Saquedeneu", which is just "Sac de nœuds" (bag of knots) written in a weird way is one of my favourite examples of some of the strange French Pokémon name out there.
One of my favorite french name is Wattapik, "Watt a pique" i guess, Pincurchin is kinda...boring, Wattapik is fun to say!! also don't worry we, french speaker even find the french name boring or weird

I'm French and I'm really happy I got to grow up with an actual localization of Pokémon names. And the fun part is, it's all thanks to a single 19yo teenager. Not only Julien Bardakoff actually convinced Sugimori himself that Pokémon needed french names before internationalization was even a thing, but he solo-handed translated the 251 first ones. He did weird individual choices that he regrets to this day (Grimer and Muk as Tadmorv Grotadmorv ; literally Pile'o'snot and Bigpile'o'snot), but overall he's a hero to us.
And that actually goes further : except the anime (and only during the 4kids era), everything related to Pokémon went directly from Japan to France, without USA being involved. That kid built the premises of a huge business plan. That's far from being anecdotical.
Never forget these two names : Julien Bardakoff, and Jean-Marc Anthony Kabeya (the guy who sang the first openings).
A teenager translating them honestly explains some of the weird names of the earlier French pokémon and I absolutely love it. "So why is this called pile of snot?"

That’s because the word for null has progressively come to also refer to something that sucks, while also retaining its original meaning. So, if we were to translate literally and from English, its name would be “Type:nul”. But that wouldn’t work.

In french, Finizen is Dofin (Dolphin in french but wrote in a very simplified way) and Palafin, Superdofin. A lot of people are finding thoses names lames, personally i find it very goofy and funny that way
The french translator is pretty prolific, and the reason we dont just use the english names in French or German. Did you know gaming has some great details on him. Also pretty sure the german translator was the original wario voice.

The name is a combination between
□ Ectoplasm (the material that ghosts are typically said to be made of in media)
and
□ Plasma (the fourth state of matter, which is achieved by heating up air at a *VERY HIGH* temperature to create a strong yet unstable source of energy).

The weirdest french name for me is Bruxish being Denticrisse. "Dentifrice" is french for toothpaste, and "crisse" is a common swear word in Québec and far as I can tell doesn't mean anything in France. Not really sure what they were thinking with this one

Uhm, Type Null isn't literally translated as Tipo Cero in spanish, in fact is renamed Código Cero, which translates to Code Zero
My favorite name is Scorbunny's, Flambino, which is based on flamme (French for flame) and bambino (Italian for child). I have a save file in Shield that's in French because I'm studying French, and it's fun seeing all the different names ^-^
No it comes from flamber and banbin which has basically the same meaning as bambino the o is just here to make it sound good

We can thank Julien Bardakoff for insisting on translating the names, especially since he had to give so MANY examples to Nintendo back then about how some foreign names would sound offensive (imagine doing that during a professional meeting for all 151 first Pokemons)

Talking about wild french Pokémon names, I feel the need to bring up the fact that a decent amount of them, when said out loud, sounds exactly like typical french sayings; most of the time for no other reason than "silly fun lol"
Audino, who's name already kinda sounds like "I dunno" in english, is "Nanméouïe" in french, inculding "ouïe" the french word for hearing but also sounding exactly like "non mais oui", litteraly "no but yeah" a very common french way of speech used in an astonish amount of conversation with various meanings.
Indeedee in a similar way to its english inspirations sounds like "oui messire" => "yes my lord".
Palossand is Trépassable, including "trépas", a word for an untimely death aswell as "sable", the french word for sand ... and also happens to sound like "très passable", a heavily judgmental way to say "pretty mediocre".
Yamask is "Tutafeh", Tutankhamun, "fée" french for fairy, "épitaphe/epitaph" ... and it sounds like "tout-à-fait" meaning "yes indeed"
And it's evolution "Toutankafer", is Tutankhamun again, tank, "fer" french for iron, and sounds both like "tout en café" which is not a common saying but means "entierly made of coffee" aswell as "tout, tant qu'à faire" wich is not even a saying per say, but a completly random phrase you might hear in any everyday conversation beacause it roughly translates to "might aswell get everything" and it could be used as a reaction in any given context.
I'll end the list here, but there are dozens of names like that, clever wordplays and inspirations for sure, but with a second layer added to it of randomly sounding like entierly unrelated bribes of everyday conversation.
I dunno how many other languages do this for their Pokémon names on a regular basis, but this is definitely a trend we've got here in france, and to me, this actually is the wildest stuff about it.

as for a better name ? poissépine. took me literally less than 5sec, it's the english name (épine -> qwill poisson ->fish) just translated and switched around, it sound fine and as a bonus "poisse" means bad luck, which fit for a fugu/naval mine pokemon, you're unlucky to "step" on any of those.

Nah, that's not it, because that's too similar to Poissirene and Poissoroy, without the mon having any connection to those two and it would also give the impression of the 'poisse' point applying to those two too, so defo not that one. And no better name comes to mind, because all I get contains poiss-, which I explained to be a big no already, mixing the mine and the quil would be redundant, and I don't see anything with min- that wouldn't be read like the digit 1 or give the impression it's a tiny mon compared to the rest of its evo line, which it didn't have for a long time, and that consists of Overquill which has the theme of being absurdly big, and not the contrary of Qwilfish being small. So basically, it would give an impression of tiny that wouldn't be justified.

and as I said it's a name I made up in >5sec. My point is that the english name does not work at all in french and should've been changed.
plus it's not like french pokemon names have to be that well thought out (I mean draco and minidraco ? )
