INEOS Grenadier Outback Tow Test - 5000km, Two Caravans

- Caravan World finally gets its hands on what we think is one of the best out-of-the-box 4WDs on sale today for an epic tow test.
We hitch up a full-size, 3500kg ATM Wonderland RV in Melbourne, tow with a petrol Trailmaster to Brisbane where we hitch up the latest Jayco CrossTrak and hit the beaches north of Noosa.
After a couple of days pushing into strong, hot winds, we make it to Eldee, just outside of Broken Hill to wrap up our shoot before heading back to Melbourne.
12 days and 5000km later, we have our results.

This bloke makes the Grenadier look like a Jimny. 😂 bloody huge.
My pick would be the B57 3.0-litre diesel Trialmaster, with red chassis, steelies, sliders, front and rear winches, safari windows, and some lightbars.

Grenadier diesel ... I have one, and it is an absolute ripper. I was a 200 series Land Cruiser owner... The Grenadier is wonderfully quiet on the highway. Off-road - that is special, of course.
My wife loves the seating - the window ledge she described as "her trucker's armrest!" Yes, a few niggles with these early deliveries, but I think all new owner's understand that. By the second day, the footrest issue is forgotten; fuel... the 90-litre tank is a furphy, plan your trip! CarPlay requires something - perhaps I need to ask my grandson.
Most have said the foot well issue (it’s not technically a footrest as is in the wrong place but gets used as one) never goes away and forces your body to twist causing pain in your hips and back the more and longer you drive.
So a Discovery 3 tdv6 2.7L owner here. I’d like more than 400km of range. How would you do the French Line on the Simpson?
Excellent review, thanks so much for that; answered our questions around towing offroad - which is just what we need to here in the South Island, NZ. We're pretty convinced we'll order one soon!

It’s quite amusing reading all these comments, own a grenadier trailmaster with close to 20K on the clock, all those issues you guys speak of are dissolved with u drive it like ur stole in off road, its quite comfortable sitting on 160/170kph on rough!!!! gravel roads or sand tracks, then take in on rock crawling tracks it will blow ur mind how good it is in standard form i have a long history of 4x4ing and the grenadier is leaps and bounds superior 4x4 in standard form and you will only understand it if you have experience. People that own them what i suggest to you drive them hard, jump the thing, drift it, push it hard, and it will just put a massive smile on ur face as it comes out of any situation with flying colours !!

An interesting episode full of important information. In the next episode, I hope you will talk about external and internal accessories and their cost. An important point is the external and internal electrical connections, the performance of the air conditioner, and talk about engine temperature and gear in hot weather and during towing. What are the best tires, are they wide or medium, and how to choose the most suitable tire. We follow you from the Sultanate of Oman.

One must always remember that Best tow vehicle (petrol/diesel) is firstly, very subjective and secondly NOT only about fuel consumption.
I drive petrol and prefer it for everything including towing. I just like the power, the feel, the responsiveness compared to diesel and I’m prepared to pay a little more in fuel for the pleasure that petrol provides. I never have and probably never will own a diesel however I have driven plenty. Not a fan.
The comment Rated Recovery points is meaningless without providing a rating. Everything is rated - it might be rated at 50N or at 100kg. But it still has a rating.
If you are going to say “rated recovery” points please provide the rating or it means nothing.
Had a drive experience on and off road of this. Built like a tank. But I would not buy one for any road use. The no self centre is a downfall. But even worse is the lump in the footwell. Steering wheel on the correct side, right side. The auto is very good and plenty of power. Another downside is the interior. Cheap looking plastics and lack of storage spaces for phones. Glasses. And other small and large things. Something the new defender has plenty of.

Perhaps version 2 when they fix the central dash and put it in front of the driver where you can see it easily and drop the price down as the New Prado will just outperform and outsell these. Great show and tell chaps, cheers from Oz🇦🇺

Prado won't outperform this. The BMW engine is too good, and the gearbox has already been proven to be bulletproof. Pack that with twin lockers, all the technology to read every temperature and built in support for pretty much any addon you want to add
@@daniurcu9979what worries me about BMW engines is their reliability. They are fantastic engines when they are working.
Nice review ,they are for sale finally in Canada , both powertrains are very good and well proven, the lousy part is in Canada and USA we don't get the diesel , it sucks, it doesn't meet emission standards here which in turn they should, Australia's emission standards for diesel almost a stringent as Canada and from what i have been told by a senior BMW dealer tech with over 30 yrs said it's just a matter of reprogramming the ECU and modifying the DEF system, BMW offered to do this Ineos declined and said North American deliveries will only see Petrol engines so decided to cancel my order when i got all the current data from the correct sources and pricing here is even higher than Australia, for niche vehicles we have always paid a premium even higher than the USA, so i am forced to buy a new Lexus LX 550, i know still stuck with a petrol, it has a 3.5 litre twin turbo V6 with a 10 speed and are fuel efficient ,averaging 9.5/10.5 litres/100kms in the pickups and they way over 6200 lbs, i go long distance daily and in summer tow 3 to 4000kms round trip 👍

How did these vehicles make this trip at 20l/100 and a 90l tank?
Brilliant cars. But let down by the paltry fuel capacity (at least for Australian touring); the strange left foot footrest; and the unknown ability of who is going to fix it in the middle of nowhere if it needs repairing. I've driven a couple (both diesels) and they are awsome bits of kit. Expensive, but not stupid expensive. Am waiting for a couple of years to see how the dealerships play out, and for the "Series II" improvements that will surely be coming.
These guys just did a big circle in and around NSW. I dont disagree that the fuel capacity is small but is it as big a deal breaker as people are saying I dunno.
@@juznut Yeah - I was thinking more of some of the bigger trips, like going through the Simpson and the like. We did it a couple of years ago in a 76, and even with 180L of diesel we didn't have a lot to spare. Although the 3.0L six would use less than the V8.

Diesel is also a must when you're out west, 95/98RON will be hard to come by.
Im not a 4wd nor have done any 4wd driving however... that horisontal front strut looks very low and look vulnerable...?
Steering stabiliser nothing a better bash plate protection won’t fix
Ive been in the auction industry for 37 years. Ive owned 40,60,80,100,200,300,70s including 5 v8s as well and landrover patrol and early rangerover. I sold my 79 dual cab and bought a hilux. Why? To see if i can live with a 4cyl 70. I hated the 300. Tailgate, position of the fuel filter, lousey cruise control and the motor gets very hot. I think toyota are taking the piss out of their consumers.
The Grenadier throws “a cat amongst the pigeons” by giving us a coil sprung wagon like a 80 series (best toyota wagon imo), or a 4.2 patrol wagon.
Areas of concern? The hump in the drivers footwell and the inability to put a larger fuel tank in. It should be 140litre as the range is awful.
Would i buy one? Yes. If they fixed these issues. Thats coming from a die hard landcruiser owner. In the meantime inwill drive my fj45 1979 ute with a genuine 112,000k on the clock to remind me what a real toyota was

Pitrol is what you buy from the fush and chups shop in your jandles with a chully bin of beez in the boot.
The footrest issue is over stated. We've now done over 6000km in Gren's and you just plant your left foot on it and forget its there. The fuel tank could be bigger for 'Straya, you are not wrong there.

It is a review about its towing capability. It is built like a tank and with factory suspension it looked really stable on the dirt roads. If you want other information there are plenty of other videos. I have watched over 50 videos and this guy gives a well balanced review addressing his target audience - grey nomads and other interested in towing. Foot space for the driver is a common furphy about the INEOS.

It might be built like a tank but not 2700kg+ tank, that's just silly.
It's so heavy that the loading capacity is reduced for Europe that have 3500kg for a standard license.
@@perpelle You are not the only one who has been in the car. It did not fuss me nor the 6 foot 3 inch bloke with me. Some have issues, but it is greatly exaggerated - a complete furphy for most people. It is the best built 4X4 I have ever seen, better than the Toyota 70 series, Nissan patrol, Defender, LC200, LC300 and Prados. It is not a drive around the town car, but a purpose built offroad car. Amazing build quality for this type of work. I bought it, hands down better than the Toyotas I was looking at - for my purposes.

We'd ditch the nut lock too, mainly because we've lost a couple and cutting then off is a PIA.

This thing is a bmw g wagon
The manufacture does not, or rather will not share a technical service manual for this vehicle. Absolutely ridiculous that this cannot be acquired by owners of such a vehicle. Was ready to order one but have decided against since the manufacturer apparently does not wish owners to be able to service their own vehicle.
Is that right? They were talking it up to us as a 300+ page document with exploded diagrams of axles etc - super handy we thought. We'll ask what the lastest is with that.
Let me know what you find. My dealer said they had none and there was no plan to offer a service manual. I asked what I was supposed to do when I broke down 200 miles from civilization? They shrugged and had no answer.

@@booger65man I picked up a message this morning that suggests it was and still is the plan but has been harder to do than expected.
"It’s definitely still something we intend on doing but the reality of the project was much more complicated than we anticipated and amongst launching the vehicle and brand, we weren’t able to deliver this as soon as we wanted. We hope to be able to provide customers access to service manuals and documentation before the end of 2024."
@@CaravanWorldMagazine I find it questionable that producing a service manual is hard and that it took them by surprise. If they can figure out how to build and sell these vehicles around the world, one would expect the service manual would be trivial to offer. I wiill consider a purchase when and only when they offer a technical service manual.

Definitely not suited to long distance touring and towing IMO. I noticed there was no mention of how inadequate the 90 litre tank is when towing.
It needs at least a 130litre tank.

It's about average in this class, even the new 250 Prado is rumored to come with a 90 lt tank, Ranger-80lt, Navara-80lt, Hilux 80lt.

So it’s a old defender with bmw engines, and kinda surprise plastics interior like a early 00’s x trail.
Probably durable (provided the engine don’t throw chains or injectors like most beemers do) but let’s face it, it’s a home made hummer for those who want to play G I Joe. Outback touring? While I hate the bloody things, I’m afraid it’s a prado or cruiser.

@@Phil_McAvity lack of parts if anything goes wrong also. Same reason you don't buy a disco or defender for remote, 90 tank is poor, but maybe you can find room for a secondary. Regardless as much as they look unreal most will buy a prado, 79 or land cruiser for same or less price.
@@Phil_McAvity100%. Some parts of remote Australia it’s hard to get petrol. A fully loaded Grenadier towing a little camper trailer wouldn’t get far even with a jerry or two.

How about some points that you wouldn’t buy it for. Or is this a marketing campaign? And if it is that’s fine but ethics tells me you should advertise that. But here a few balancing points. left leg is on a ramp; no head up display; plastic everywhere; plastic front dash looks cheap only has light warnings; electronics need adaptors out back; no after market products; and then there is the cost; started at mid 70s and gone close to mid 100s for purchase. Not tested in real world for 50-100,000km yet. What about dealer network? You got to turn the steering wheel 15 times to get lock to lock; the suspension can be firm/ punchy; the diff lock doesn’t engage in real time; the BMW gear selector could have been Ineos labeled; need a 2 inch lift, but besides that it’s awesome and would like to buy an older second hand one that’s affordable for the masses.
And the land cruiser is ok at $170k...

The only problem with the grenadier is that it is not a Land Cruiser....
if you plan on using the Grenadier for hard off-roading / big rock's the first rock you hit off-road is going to squash the steering dampener if it is on the left if it is on the right then it will be the fuel tank and then there is the low radiator it has a guard but if you have to reverse off a rock or a bank it will get hooked up and then at about 12min there is what i think is the bottom of the auto box the black vented panel/sump behind the motor that feels like plastic when you knock on it other than that awesome truck and unless you plan on bashing over big rocks nothing to worry about
