The idea of someone never hearing Green Day actually never crossed my mind… all here for it though😂
When Green Day broke big in 1994 w/ their 3rd album 'Dookie'... they had the usual punk rock style bangers like 'Basket case' ... 'She'... 'Welcome to paradise'... but they also had a laid back song that became a huge hit - 'When I come around'... The band wanted some diversity on the record to the opening single 'Longview'.
Of course, when punk rock purists accused Green Day of 'selling out' and being 'poseurs'... the band released a short, heavy record 'Insomniac' in 1995... and it had great moments like 'Brain stew/ Jaded'...
Going into the 1997 album 'Nimrod'... Green Day decided to say 'eff it' and made an acoustic ballad - 'Good riddance (Time of your life)'... it was as far removed from punk rock as they could go.
They returned in 2000 w/ the album 'Warning'... and it literally had acoustic and stripped-down songs. It went gold in the US, but became their lowest-selling record to that point. They were recording a new album afterwards, but it was stolen from the studio.
As a result, Green Day wrote a new album from scratch... This time, they were inspired by the polarization of post-9/11 America where anti-war and pro-war supporters were at odds, and Green Day sided w/ the anti-war crowd. That became the concept album 'American idiot'... it became their biggest record since 'Dookie' in 2004.

I’d definitely suggest checking out Green Day’s Wake Me Up When September Ends from the same album. And the song American Idiot is much more in line musically with Basket Case.

I think I wore out this CD when it came out as I listened to it all the time! American Idiot & When September Comes are also great Green Day tracks. I like your honest reactions and that you do research after hearing the music. I just subscribed.😎👍
The entire album is great. It’s hard to listen to one song without the rest. I’ve seen the stage performance of American Idiot as well, and it was excellent. I listen to the Broadway soundtrack sometimes instead of the original version.
This is a bit later for them but man this album was good and it was delivered at just the right time. There are so many good songs from this. I was in a honky tonk band for years and later on at some point we would cover this, but we would introduce it as an old Appalachian or Irish or whatever we made up that night folk song and do it acoustically to start. And then it was so fun waiting for the audience to recognize it and we had the harmonies and everything and it was so fun. And then halfway through we would kick it into high gear and bring it home.

Damn this song brings me back, I think I lived with the whole playlist (you guys know the one, we all had it) on repeat for like 2 years, thinking I was sooooo deep and no one except my music could possibly understand me

American Idiot and Wake American Up When September Ends are my other favorites from that album.
Good Riddance is probably their biggest song, and 21 Guns is another great one. Most of the songs on Dookie were big hits too, but it’s a bit of a different sound since it was during the grunt/alternative wave of the early to mid 90s.
American Idiot is a great song! They have so many great songs!
Considering the month, try Wake Me Up When September Ends. They have a ton of great music.

I would highly recommend that you react to their song ''Holiday'' or ''When i come around'' next. One of their best songs ever for sure.

I can't say for certain....but I think their 2nd album was extremely critical of the Bush administration. That's pretty much why I bought it. Wen September Ends was a big hit for them.

It must be the sign of the times because I do not understand this generation's compulsion to try to put everything into a category. Just enjoy life and everything that comes with it and don't try to always label it.
