If you do a good job at fertilizing (mulching) your english walnut tree it should start bearing fruit within like 5-7 years. If you do the tree can grow 3-4 feet per year except for the first year when it sprouts. Never grown hazelnuts, planted a few in 2018, fingers crossed about pollination when they grow up.

I attended a talk today where they mentioned Dunstan chestnuts which are expected to bear fruit in about 3-5 years.

Thanks! I'm getting ready to plant some. I like that they are natives. I'll probably also plant some hybrid or European ones eventually too. Do you know how much sun they need?

Part sun seems to work fine for me although I’d imagine productivity would improve with more light.

I saw the American Hazelnut trees at tractor supply. I was going to buy some but I didn’t know if I needed different varieties planted with them in order to get nuts. Do I need multiple varieties or no? What are some good varieties to plant with the American?
