I enjoy your enthusiastic voice. ❤ I planted three small hazelnut trees of the purple leafed variety at a local greenhouse this spring. I live in Michigan. One gave me 4 hazelnuts this year. Do you know if the purple variety is different and if so, how? I would like to plant the best variety.

Thank you ♥ I have only had the common American hazelnut (Corylus americana) which I got from Fedco. I didn't even know there was a purple variety. How cool is that! Thanks for teaching me something new 😁

I just planted 10 bareroot American Hazelnut whips. The whips are about 3 feet tall, and one single stem. I would like them to mature into a bush. Should i be doing any trimming to encourage them to fill out?

Awesome! The first year you just want to let them get established although you can trim back the tops a few inches to encourage side branching. I prune them back each spring so that they stay about 4 - 5 feet tall. Oregon state U has a really good guide for prunning hazelnuts. extension.oregonstate.edu/crop-production/nuts/pruning-hazelnut-trees-basic-guide
