  • You too can eat wild hazelnuts. This video will explain what to do with your nuts from harvesting to roasting to storage. For more general information about wild hazelnuts, read my blog post at: neveragoosecha...
For foraging video updates, please subscribe. Up soon: wild walnuts, and an analysis of the nutcrackers on the market.
Please visit neveragoosecha... to read about all my do-it-yourself adventures. Never A Goose Chase is dedicated to the idea that no matter what you do in the great outdoors and no matter what you get out of it, time spent away from civilization and technology is never wasted- it's never a goose chase. Topics are wide-ranging, and special emphasis is given to public lands, getting kids into the outdoors, unusual or less-known activities, and the great outdoors of Minnesota.

Thanks for this great video! I just moved to Northern Minnesota and found hazelnutall over my property! I missed the winfow to pick but apparently the deer and squirrels didn’t!😂😅 I'll know better next year. Thanks again 😊❤

To crack shells, my friend lent me a G-clamp that tightens by turning a handle. You can gently increase the pressure without hurting your hands. Pieces of shell do still sometimes fire across the room but it's much less likely that the whole nuts will!

Thanks! First year I had hazelnuts, gathered them, husked them, and put some in lidded container. Three or four weeks later, I learned (the hard way) not to do that again as they had gotten moldy. What a waste! Luckily, I had left some in plastic bags (not closed) & those didn’t go bad. Now, thanks to you, I know I should’ve roasted them (half an hour at 220 Fahrenheit!? My stove uses Celsius). If I had to guess, I’d go with low heat (F) not super high (C).

I have a third generation nut cracker, that’ll cope with very small nuts upto large walnuts & Brazil nuts. Though walnuts are more fun to crack, just pressing one nut against another in the hand. Our nut cracker is wide and rounded on the outside, with graduated grip-teeth on the inside. Don’t know who made it, only that it was bought in Wales c1920s.
Thanks for a great guide to prepping hazel nuts.

My friend cracks the nuts with his teeth and I look at him like he's a psycho

It’s always a race against wildlife. They get far more than we do.
