- In this video, I wanted to show you how to restore the Microsoft Authenticator app on a new phone using your old device and iCloud or Microsoft Cloud Backup.

Your tutorial seems pretty straight forward to recover the Cloud backed up account onto the new phone. Somewhere I read the advise to erase the date on the old phone first before recovering the accounts on the new phone. Which of course will not work if the old is stolen or badly damaged. Appreciate your feedback.

People might do 3 mistakes.
1) while installing Microsoft authenticator in the new phone, people might login instead of skipping it. Then they will not find "begin recovery" option.
2) after logging in, they may turn on cloud backup (which will erase the old backup) (if they fail to see the dialogue box in a hurry)
I think, these two are design faults of the app. They should have provided an option to restore after logging in.
3) people might not have stored "setup codes (or QR codes) and recovery codes" somewhere else *away from the current phone*. That is of course people's fault.

Do you have any idea how to get my new iCloud backup onto my current Authenticator app? That dialogue box you mentioned says I have an update made recently but I don’t know how to access it. My current Authenticator app seems to have an old set of accounts on it.
Why would one need recovery codes? All they need is the microsoft account password right?
@@sushmarakkasi1698 Google authenticator is a better solution. Because it has export and import facility (3 dots, transfer accounts, export). Stop using Microsoft authenticator.
A tip, if case all your 2FA acounts don't appear in your new device. Go to the original device, turn off cloud back up (that erase the old back up) then turn it on again (that creates a new back up). Then go to your new device and star the recovery again from scratch, that usually works to recover all yours 2FA. I suggest having the app in two devices, just in case.

The only reason I switched from Google Auth to Microsoft Auth is due to the back feature that was lacking in the old Google Auth. Now I completly lost access to my 2FA because of the same feature (apparently their backup will only restore on the same device). Never use the Microsoft Auth unless necessary.
I lost my phone on which the windows 360 panel login authentication app is located and I can't now access Microsoft because it asks me to authenticate and there are no other options?.
So what's the solution?

spent some time trying to recover after moving from iphone > android only to discover that 'Your backup is stored in the iCloud for iOS and in Microsoft's cloud storage provider for Android. This means that your backup is unavailable if you switch between Android and iOS devices. If you make the switch, you must manually recreate your accounts within the Authenticator app.'

I followed this, and all my MFA accounts came back, however EVERY account required action. What was the action, to re-scan the QR codes used to create he account (ie, re-create the account).
I have never hated an application so bad.
I did notice an export option, this resulted in the same issue, my "imported accounts" need to be verified by scanning the QR code provided by the company...
So slowly 1-by-1 I am now re-creating all my authentication accounts, this has been the worst part to changing from a damaged cellular device, but luckily in this regard, I can access and use the damaged device, would hate to experience not having access to the defunct device...

I spent 5 hours today trying to figure this out before I watched this video. Amazing how complicated Microsoft makes matters. You have to hit the "skip" button, not the "recover" button when you log on to make this work. Why would they do that? It like they design protocols without a non-trained user in the room.

how do you do it without using the iCloud (Cloud = storing data on a 3rd party system that you have no control over, and can't be sure it is safe, etc.. so you would NEVER use this for something like this, Ever)
Its amazing to me. I had the app on my iphone. Got a new phone and sold my iphone and now i cant access the damn app. When trying to sign into the app its asking me to enter the code from the authenticator app which im currently IN TRYING TO GET SIGNED INTO IT. Im beyond pissed off dude. Microsofts security is BS.

Guys if your phones are lost or you unninstalled the authenticator you can still log in your account. After typing your id and password if it says you need more identification click switch account and click your account it will automatically log in. (I am only using a smartphone and i have done this in both the google chrome and the lms teams, hope this can help you guys)

It doesnt work with Microsoft Authenticator App Stored in iCloud. Only few keys are available. It is terrible..There must be a Microsoft mistake I guess.

Hi there. I have a tricky situation. I downloaded the authenticator app on my phone then added my aunt's school account in there. Then I accidentally deleted her account in the app. Now, whenever she logs in, her school acocunt keeps on asking for a microsoft code from the app which we can't receive anymore since I deleted it. What can I do? - because it's not showing options on other ways to recover it (like text, call, or email)

@@safahameed3671 If its your school account, notify your schools computer comms to remove the restriction. Thats what we did so it's okay now. Hope it works out for you as well
Aghh this is exactly my problem. Whenever i tried to sign in my school account, it asks for code in authenticator. But how can I get a code from authenticator if in the first place i can't log in on authenticator. 😣

Friendly reminder, never trust Microsoft, and always (i mean it) save the backup codes for the 2FA somewhere safe. I did everything as described, and the accounts are just gone
The same happened to me on iOS. A lesson learned: don't use Microsoft garbage products ever again. Use Authy or some other proper app.
There must be something wrong with the configuration on your account. Thanks to this video, I managed to restore my accounts from the previous phone.
You might accidentally rewrote the previous backup in your current phone, and yea, it's gone.

If you haven't enabled Cloud Backup in your Microsoft Authenticator app, unfortunately, the only option you have left is to contact Snapchat support and hope for the best.
I've turned on cloud storage in the ms authenticator app. but when I reset my cellphone and want to restore the backup it can't be restored. how to recover it? I can't login to all my accounts without the a2f code

It does not work in 2024 anymore. I have identical scenario as on video, i.e. old phone is Android, new phone is iPhone. Clicking begin recovery on clean install of MS Authenticator just results in a pop-up saying there is no backup in icloud account. It seems it does not even bother looking for backups on MS servers. Yes, backup feature is enabled on my old Android phone, and yes, I tried disabling and re-enabling cloud backup option. I specifically chose MS Auth. app to have cloud backup feature just in case and for the purpose of easy device migration, a few years ago when this feature was not widely available, and now it does not work. Good bye MS or rather GTFO, and I will re-set all 2FAs with a third party app that actually works.

@@Mike_v_E On Android, disabling the backup option will delete your backup. Although, I'm not sure how this will work with iCloud and MS Account on iPhone. You may lose backup in MsCloud but still, have a copy in your iCloud. Great question. I will test this asap.

Nothing described in this video works as presented.
You haven’t explained that after doing this you will need to scan the Q code for each account and what do you do if you don’t have access to the codes.
In this example there is no need to do this. As long as you have the backup of your accounts in the cloud, you can restore them on any device.

You don't have to, unless you're not the owner of those accounts (e.g. company or school account).
I used a Google Authenticator for Microsoft... (dont ask me why) But I deleted the profile off of that Autenticator and now cannot access my entire Microsoft account any advice
