It does not work in 2024 anymore. I have identical scenario as on video, i.e. old phone is Android, new phone is iPhone. Clicking begin recovery on clean install of MS Authenticator just results in a pop-up saying there is no backup in icloud account. It seems it does not even bother looking for backups on MS servers. Yes, backup feature is enabled on my old Android phone, and yes, I tried disabling and re-enabling cloud backup option. I specifically chose MS Auth. app to have cloud backup feature just in case and for the purpose of easy device migration, a few years ago when this feature was not widely available, and now it does not work. Good bye MS or rather GTFO, and I will re-set all 2FAs with a third party app that actually works.

I followed this, and all my MFA accounts came back, however EVERY account required action. What was the action, to re-scan the QR codes used to create he account (ie, re-create the account). I have never hated an application so bad. I did notice an export option, this resulted in the same issue, my "imported accounts" need to be verified by scanning the QR code provided by the company... So slowly 1-by-1 I am now re-creating all my authentication accounts, this has been the worst part to changing from a damaged cellular device, but luckily in this regard, I can access and use the damaged device, would hate to experience not having access to the defunct device...

  • @uchitesting

Thanks for the video. The app is a bit unpractical. I mean I bought a new phone a few weeks back and adding authenticators was one of my 1st move. I didn't know or pay attention to any mention to recover from a backup. In my mind you connect to your account and should there be such a backup feature it is all done for you. It syncs in the background. I jsut wanted to connect to GitHub and it asked for TOTP. I had the account on the old phone. I connect and added GitHub to the new phone. Easy peasy. But I have a dozen other sources available on the old phone I would need to add to the new... :/ On the old phone a message told me my backup is outdated so I did the necessary to have it updated. Now I'd simply love to have my new phone get the data back. Cloud backup is disabled so I enable it. But that would be too easy I guess. It is telling me there is a backup from another device. Do I want to crush the backup ? Of course no ! I want it the other way. But no option is provided. The doc says be sure to retrieve the backup before loging in. OK lets disconnect then... but there is no Sign out / disconnect option I could find... Great ! Seriously. This is messy. Why is it not also telling me. Hey there is this backup from another device. What do you want to do ? Crush the backup with date from this device ? Or crush the data on this device from the backup online ? That seems like common sense to me. Why isn't there a check at all to state that when you attempt to login in the app ?

If you screenshot a QR Code on your android device, you can then use Google Lens to read the QR code to get that text. This does away with needing a spare phone. There is no way I would upload all my 2FA authenticator information to any website. I think it is quicker to simply go to each website that you have 2FA enabled on, and grab the QR code or the TOTP secret key from there and add it directly from the Bitwarden app on the phone. Some sites may not show this so you may have to disable and reenable the 2FA to get a new code to scan. Obviously, this depends on how many sites you are using Google Authenticator for. For me, I thought this was quicker than setting up Python and the convertor utility and gave me piece of mind from a security perspective.

The only reason I switched from Google Auth to Microsoft Auth is due to the back feature that was lacking in the old Google Auth. Now I completly lost access to my 2FA because of the same feature (apparently their backup will only restore on the same device). Never use the Microsoft Auth unless necessary.

Thanks so much. This should be built in to Google Authenticator. I can now keep the seeds in a secure backup in case I lose my phone. Little nervous about running an app, but, you said you examined the code, and so did I. I would not run an .exe file with all my secrets at stake. Just for safe measure, I disconnected from the LAN when I ran it to make sure there were no clandestine transmissions. From now on, I will record the seed for backup when I enroll a site. I learned so much about TOTP and security devices this weekend.
