But your new collaboration broke rule#1!
The two tone problem for customers can probably be fixed if the Nick website had an interactive feature where an image can swap out the colors of the section you choose. Overall, an interactive feature would be great for assembling boots and info about what they mean. Took me a few days to figure out what certain terminologies means and a their significance. Would have order my boots sooner and almost dropped buying boots from Nicks because it was starting to get complicated. Seeing what I was building in real time would have saved me a lot of time.
Yes! Im trying to order, this would help so much !
Like…one million percent agree. I am looking to order a pair also, and this feature would be hugely beneficial.
yea you reall yhave to know how every option looks before ordering and going through all boots just to find one picture with the leather option I am looking for is annoying
It’s needed
Exactly!
I only regret 2 tone boots because I should have gone 3 tone!! 🤓
Hahahaha
I am like, those boots are cool. Some people are so self conscious
I have a pair of 10 inch red and black like those I like two tones always have especially when you rebuild why not spice it up a little
😂
4 tone is best, because you can do patches of various colors brown burgundy green black grey pink blue turquoise meh ,
I can't wait for my two toned, toe capped, clown shoes to show up! 🤡👢👃
Hahaha I'm sure you'll like them
Will they make a 3 or 4 tone boot? Extra high, with toe caps, structured-steel toed? With the extra shank and light up soles? Can they also sew on stainless steel scale armor? That would be cool. I do volunteer rural fire fighting, but don't want the fireproof sole, that would be too much. It would be like I am trying too hard.

@@drahdown those still look pretty good. Rose anvils video on them describes what he wanted. The only odd piece is on the middle and only really visible when you take a step.
With the two-tone, I think people freak out with how different the colors are out-of-the-box, but when they give the boots more time and wear, they end up looking gorgeous when they're both darker neutrals. The left boot in the two-tone examples looks ridiculous because its fresh - the right one, where its seen some moderate usage, is beautiful. The variation in color on the vamp panel in the rolls and creases ties the colors together really well. I think if that left boot was given some time for the sole to darken up a bit, the toe and heel got some time for the fibers to take on some organic variation in color and texture, and the uppers were allowed to become less than pristine - get some nice rolls, take on a broader range of tone rather than just being all black, maybe dull up the hardware a bit and let the laces take on some color - it would be really striking and the type of boot somebody would be proud to be recognized by on the worksite.
this channel has been an incredibly informative guide on getting a custom boot from you guys, I greatly appreciate this
Great to hear!
And here I thought the number one mistake was buying work boots when you work in a cubicle
Since when is buying a hand made American product that will last potentially decades a mistake? I’m all for people stimulating the American economy. Cubicle worker and fire jumper alike!
Idk personally I wear composite toed boots, and flip flops, I absolutely hate sneakers. Granted some of the jobs I worked require the boots, but most of the time I wear them just bc boots are far more comfortable than sneakers imo waterproof and protected, nothing worse than going a day in wet feet
@@xxportalxx. Me too! I actually
have hiking sandals with a composite shank.
@@mdeamicis hiking sandals with composite shank!? That's wild, what are they called?
@@DWhite-el4ih I feel like they wear down nicely too when you use them for trips and get that character going on.
I love two tone boots. Specifically dark brown on light brown. Looks AMAZING!
Haha to each their own!
I was thinking the same thing.
My get so dusty that they’re already two tone.
Dark brown above the pant leg and
Dust colored below.
Two tone boots can look great, but you need to work harder to match them to what you're wearing, even if they're in two neutral colors
I needed the lineman shank, and it was a bear to break in. But after a few trips up the pole they are comfortable. Best boots ever👍🏻
Thanks for sharing!
Hey Gringo! Do you think they are as useful or comfortable when you're up in the air or just walking?
I hate the shank so I always change boots before I climb. Old timers hate it because you should wear your uncomfortable climbing boots all the time like a man!
So I always get steel shank for climbing and wear them as little as possible. Will these leather shanks support your foot for 12 hours or whatever?
@@richardpatterson4312 I am 6 ft, about 180 lbs. I was able to wear lineman boots all day. I think my height and weight helped in breaking them in. I like when I make a thunk.
Realistically, only wearing them when climbing or outside is better. If you wear them all the time, the sole will last maybe a year or 2. If your job includes going into customers' homes, then having a clean boot and dirty boot is better.
@@richardpatterson4312 I would also like to hear the answer to your question
I'm in the tree 25-30% of my work week, do I need two pair or is the climbing shank comfortable in everyday task like yard work and on spikes for long periods?
What an incredible decision by your brand to release this! Valuing your customer in this way is why Nick's is my bucketlist boot brand
I hate the extra space and look of a composite toe, but when shit falls on my foot daily and you don't feel it, it is what it is.
Safety first!
I had a full stick of 8in fall of stands on to my foot 3 weeks ago. Smashed steel toe in to where boot is unwearable but my foot was fine. I'm guessing some major surgery would have been evolved had I not had a safety toe boot in that instance. Was actually thinking of non safety toe for next pair since not required but after that close of a call I will never own a non safety toe boot.
@@chrisjones6165 absolutely, you'd probably have to relearn how to walk. Worse I've seen was a family friend who had a skidsteer bucket fall and cleave his toes clean off, never recovered the poor man. Second worse was another friend who got his foot stuck in a conveyer at a mill, took the sole of his foot off, he's permanently disabled. Granted those two cases were regardless of footwear, but the point is foot injuries are no joke.
Well when you have wide feet the extra width is quite nice, I like a roomy boot myself
@@xxportalxx. I have fat feet but no way could I wear a standard boot. My poor feet would be so squished and sore. Need a wide or even a dble wide on some. Will only use safety toe boots so that may make some difference but I won't go any other way.
The NFPA cert soles are NOTORIOUS for chunking with age, regardless of actual wear. It was so bad that when the department was looking for boots for me, one of their old stock boots literally crumbled first wear, and the other ones delaminated from the sole after a month. These were 'brand new' boots that had been on the shelf for 3+ years. Buy them only if your department requires it. I want to get Nick's but mine requires a steel toe so I'll have to get fitted in WA to make sure the sizing is right.
Just buy clown shoes and call it a day
Love all the content you've been putting out lately! That two-tone at the end looks so good though....
Glad you like it. Haha they can be done tastefully!
This is a good accompaniment to the order process! It clarifies a lot of questions
Glad to hear!
Another possible regret for some people would be too high of a heel. Like you said don't over do it if you don't need it. Great video thanks 👍
True. For anyone who is on their feet a lot, heels really exacerbate back strain. All the boots he showed had way too much heel for me.
Thank you! this is exactly the kind of information that we really need to know!
Those 2 tones showing look amazing..
I appreciate all the videos they are very informative! Great job 👏
Glad you like them!
Thanks, that was simple and helpful.
Stock boots are offered as they are because they're the ideal configuration for that model boot. It was an expensive mistake for me to learn that.
Ahh! me too.
Really cool to see something so educational on buying and ordering boots.
You guys had me worried. I did a hot shot black rough out lower and smooth walnut upper.
Gotta say I love it.
Just received my steel toe Builder Pro's yesterday and you're dead on, they look and feel bigger because of it. But at least I know if I drop an automotive battery or a brake rotor on my toes (which is why I won't wear anything BUT steel toe boots at work....made that mistake once) they'll probably be fine! What a tank of a boot!
Glad to hear! They'll look better and better with time!
Thank you kindly. Education is a good thing.
Thanks for making this!
A good solution to those who still want to experiment with two tone boots is to buy a kiltie/false tongue of a different color/material. Much cheaper and easier to work with.
thats actually a very good trick!
Just ordered my first pair waiting for my “try on pair” super excited
Definitely going to get a pair of builder pros when I finish my trade school, this video helps a lot, cheers!
Awesome! We're here when you're ready!
I want a pair of these so bad, but my work requires non-slip soles. Also, I work around a lot of acid, and frequently have to walk on floors wet with nitric acid. It's not like it's a deep puddle of it, just a wet concrete floor. I'm worried about damaging the boots like this, because the acid typically eats away the stitching in every boot I've worn. My wife keeps telling me to wait until I have an office job where I don't have to worry about damaging them. Lol, makes perfect sense- wait to buy nice work boots until I have a job that doesn't require work boots. Either way, I really really hope to get a pair later this year, really like the company and the style fits me great.
I drove concrete truck for 3 years I bought the $60 Walmart brand steel toes for the same reason...the lime in the concrete and the acid and other chemicals we use to clean the trucks will destroy boots, I went through 3 pair in 3 years...
@@aaronsanborn4291 And god made rubber boots.
Can't wait to see the 4X mid-sole boots you guys released on April 1st of this year.
Wow, i didn’t see two tone coming in at #1.. the rest make total sense and i pegged them.
Haha nice!
I love the two tone. Would like to see a black roughout on the bottom with smooth light tan or natural colored uppers. I’m a big fan of Black and Tan!
Thanks for sharing!
As a lineman I would never wear a pair of boots with lineman shanks when I'm not climbing poles. I can barely stand walking between poles in my climbing boots. I literally take my 18" Wescos off as soon as I get done climbing and go back to a standard shank and height boot for bucket work.
They're rigid! No shame in that.
Personally i like the two tone look. Brown lowers, with the black leather uppers gave the boot a very cool look.
My regrets:
1. shorter than 6" - even though it may weigh less, it feels heavier because it is carried down on the foot.
2. thought I didn't need a loop in back. I didn't. But it is so much easier when you have it.
What you need is called a shoe horn. You can cut one out of some HDPE. A bucket is too heavy. Well, maybe not? I'm thinking something cut out of a 2.5 gallon water jug maybe. Then you can slip right in on the slippery plastic.
What would be really cool is if Nicks offered a cutout option like some cowboy boots have. Basically two holes cut about one inch down from
The top on either side of the boot. Would cut down on weight (slightly) but add huge functionality over a loop.
@@bradleyschmidt2075yeah. I want to pay for my leather to be cut into... That sounds like a great use of money and high quality leather.
I love my Nicks! And I can't wait to get another pair
They're a real game changer!
Fantastic look
Daaaamn !!! The two tones brown upper / bottom black is awesome, would buy it without any regret !!!
In which section of the website can we choose to mismatch boots ? i was trying to custom a falcon but didn't find out
I have 10" NFPA boots, 2-toned but done well- black boot with only the back strap walnut. I needed them for work, but I wear them for everything, all the time, all year long. My one complaint is weight... they are my most comfortable boot, and I've rebuilt them once in 6 years, I love them. But they are very heavy boots.
Excellent advice
Glad it was helpful!
I'm liking your new videos compared to the old ones. They feel more personal and less corporate. Also, I actually like the look of my Builder Pros with a steel toe and a toe cap. I must be weird I guess.
It's the look of hard work 👍
Yea nobody likes corporate anything.
I would've thought a big heel would be a mistake. Especially for older people. The Americana looks like a good overall boot.
My job never required me to wear steel toes but growing up around and now owning large hoofed animals I'm always glad I have them.
Great info! Now just need to order one, but I have no where to use it
I have the red x on my boots and I definitely have noticed chunking and they are wearing down a lot faster than my ones with regular vibram 100 soles
Sorry we didn't make this video sooner.
@@nicksboots What about the fire and ice sole? I've noticed those seem to feel really soft, kind of like the honey vibram.
@@nicksboots also interested in Grants opinion on the Fire & Ice. How does it compare to the Honey and does it crumble the same way the Red X does?
Are the boot soles with the white mark the fire and ice sole? I have the red marked soles and they wore down some at the heels, so I had plastic taps applied to prevent excess damage. However, I was walking about 4 and 1/2 miles a day, mostly on concrete. On the plus side the red soles don't mark floors, which keeps you from making enemies. The returned pair of boots in the video look past broken in to me.
@@carlcarlamos9055 yeah the white x is fire and ice. They’re non marking as well. They don’t seem any more or less durable to me but they’re definitely softer.
The only one I'd do personally is the toe cap, and that's more for the classic look, or when I want a prohibition era feel for my foot wear.
Proud to wear Nicks. Thank you guys
Ill be getting a boot from you guys in a few months, love the videos
Nice! Let us know if you have any questions!
Also wear a boot with a sole that fits your job. I'm a truck driver for a construction company so I wear 8" Carolinas with steel toes and a flat sole since I'm mostly in the truck.
Can y’all do a review on your veg tan boots? Or just your more casual boots in general?
Hoping to get a pair this year, good to know that the lineman shank is a bad idea. I do occasionally stand on the arch of my foot, but I dont think its worth having a super stiff boot!
When most brands are like "Buy whatever you want from us. All products are for everybody.". These guys are here being super honest. Respect. 💯
Just received my Overlanders in 1964 brown today! 🙌
thank you that helped a lot
I love mine even with the steel toes. I would have preferred not having them but work requires them
Love me some tall boots, but I am a logger, and I do crawl over logs a lot, the 2 tone looks good, but like on someone else lol, Remind me to have the linemans shank pulled on the next rebuild... I don't climb much anymore.
FYI get your toe box possibly bigger if you get steel toe, my boots are hardly breaking in, it's going to take me months to break them in. They have been causing my big left toe to go numb and worsen my bunions haha. It'll get better due time, but for the time being it sucks.
This is why the website options are so dumbed down now lol😂. Maybe one day you guys will have a more interactive website and return to more custom options .
It took me three pairs of nicks boots to figure this out lol 😂 now. I have a fourth on the way definitely keep it simple when ordering these 👍
That's the way to do it!
I thought they lasted decades. Why are you on your fourth pair?
@@Josh-rn1em they do. He ordered boots that were not to his liking or more than he needed
I personally think both of the two tone boots look super cool
Great insight into what you guys see and hear about on the daily. I agree the two tone boots are not a great classic look, I personally wouldn’t be into it.
To each their own, though!
I'm contemplating a pair of high boots for winter mtb street riding... 🤔
It doesn't seem like it would be too much boot under those circumstances.
NFPA for me is always worth it, cutting and burning would kill other boots mine are still going strong. Only thing I ever considered a mistake was ruff out. I know they say it absorbs cuts better but I think it just hides better. Only pair of high end I ever had to have patched was ruff out.
Ruff out is gross and lazy. To say it looks better because it hides cuts is just dumb to me. The cuts are still there, you just don't know about em. And I ALWAYS oil my boots every month or so top keep em soft and easier to get muck off em. Rough out always lolos like ass.
I would rock a t shirt that says rough out looks like ass!!!
I seriously don’t understand it.
what do you mean have to patch?
Thank you for the video. I was reading some of the comments and I also agree that some of the options depend on personal preferences. For example in my experience I have a pair of engineer boots with steel toes and they are probably the best and most comfortable boots I have. I find engineer bots dull and squashed down if they don't have steel toes or some kind of structure to hold their form. I do agree that if you ignore why you would need an option on your boots you are probably better off without it.
Good observation!
I went with the builder pro all black moderate arch 10 inch. I don't need a steel toe nor do I like them . I went with the moderate arch as the high arch logger heel caps tend to hurt my feet . I went with the 10 inch because the 6 inch boots don't have enough ankle support and 8 inch is OK but 10 inch is way better for me I wanted a basic boot to fit my needs without alot of extras. Who knows after they arrive and I wear them I might order another pair with the high arch . I like to rotate my boots to extend the wear. I'm a farmer and mechanic. I'm tired of mass produced boots that don't last over a year . I'm looking forward to my builder pros . Hopefully I'll be a lifetime customer I'm sure I will as your reputation is extremely excellent!
I am thinking really hard about getting some of your boots. I wear all black uniform boots at work. Never had a pair last longer than a couple of years without getting uncomfortable. My only thing is whether to get rough in black so I can spit shine them for work. But I will be retiring in about 3-4 years and will want to wear them long after retirement. Don’t need shiny boots around the property. Decisions decisions.
very honest video … talk highly about Nicks cia culture and values
I ordered a pair of builder pros black with rough out bottom smooth top steel toe i can't wait till they get here my current Carolina boots are getting pretty worn out
That's a great choice!
1000% love my black over walnut Packers!!
The black and brown looked awesome
It's a look!
Brown upper with black lower reminds me heavily of a WWI boot with brown canvas gaiters over them
It's interesting because I'm currently saving up for 14" builder pros with lineman shanks and the same black upper brown lower shown..... Only"regret " I'm not specifically looking for is the fire rating lol. Mind you I'm a catv lineman apprentice and working on going over to the power linemen union so the height and shank are a thing
I was unsure if I wanted to do two tone or not for this same reason, so I did all the same color but different leather textures. The lower in rough out and the upper smoothed out. I think I still got another month before they come, so I haven’t seen them yet but very excited!
Perfect way to do it, how are they
What about using the lineman shank if you're going to design a pair for motorcycle riding?
one of the most comfortable boots I ever had in my life were a pair on lineman boots
but I picked them up at the thrift store, so they may have already been broken in
I lived in those for a good five years in my 20s : )
Well that decides it, placing my order for builder pro's Thursday or friday
Let us know if you have any questions!
@@nicksboots Actually yeah, looking at your lead times, if I end up in college when you guys are getting ready to ship the final boot can I call and have the mailing address changed?
I like the clown boot and someday I'll buy one or two . Thank you Nick's for making one of the best boots in the world .
So funny… Guys I’ve worked with have all made those types of choices. And a good work environment is one where you will get made fun of!!! Thanks for the video it stirred memories.
My job requires safety toe shoes, so between that and 8yrs military it's odd not to wear boots. And all my motorcycles have the shifter setup for wearing safety toes, so tennis shoes makes it feel like my shifter is way out of wack.
I have wanted a pair of your boots for a while now. But I find that I wear a flat soled boot most often for paving asphalt. I could get some Nick's for prep days and on the weekends i guess
We've got some flat sole options! Check out the Traveler!
My BIGGEST regret is ordering boots with hooks instead of all eyelets. Yes. hooks makes it speedy removing my boots but time consuming putting them on and re-hooking the laces. Especially if im late getting ready for work.
If you're late for work, 30 seconds to do the hooks isn't gonna change a thing. Stop being lazy and don't be late.
What about the retractable toe and heel blade options?
I like the two tones just as much as the classic single tones, I dont have a fragile ego to worry about boot culture extremists. I appreciate all of this info tho, definitely helps a lot! I would have ordered the fireproof options and leather shank.
I once bought a pair of whites with red dog and blue combo, couldn’t sell them fast enough lol
Simple is definitely better
Nick’s accidentally two-toned my work boots…the uppers were the the brown I ordered but the bottoms ended up tan. They loo led like $700 bowling shoes. Apparently it was caused by a clerical error in their drop down menu. My options were to have them stained or wait another two-three months for them to be rebuilt.
Are you talking about fashion or for a working boot? Thanks...
Great video. I own too tall boots and i regret them. I love me them toe caps though. I know it makes them a pain to break in but i like them :(
Some people love them!
What color/leather combination is that on the worn out 2 tone boot at the end?
I have three pair of steel-toed western boots, one pair steel-toed engineer boots and one pair steel toed, insulated logger boots. I've worn them all a lot, one of the western boots so much I wore out the leather on the inside of the toe, and other than that, I've never noticed the steel toes as feeling any different than any other boot. Even looks-wise, there's very little difference.
Plus it seems like most western boots are two toned. The shank is almost always at least one different color if not multiple.
I wear my composite clown shoes every day. Work or play.
Regarding #1: I think those 2-tone boots look great. As an old, retired guy (who only wore black boots while in the military), I'll probably stick to black boots. Nowadays, the military has pretty much gone to a coyote (or 'spice' colored) brown boot, anyway.
I have been waiting 18 weeks so far and not a peep from your company. I was hoping I would have them by now so I could have them broken in before it gets cool outside.
I'm a size 15 extra wide. So I'm not terribly concerned with the boot feeling "bigger". I've already got massive claud hoppers.
I still don't undersrand what the real problem is with the 2 tone boot. Is it because it doesn't necessarily look good after a while??? I think they look pretty kewl. Thanks for a great video!! Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
We love our 2- tones, but for many people it may not be the best first boot, as they may expect something different than what they get
When you get to customize something yourself my general rule is to make what you want and remove 2 or 3 details
Haha. Funny timing. I was just on the website looking at a build with composite toe and thinking I'd do 2 tone since it was an option.
The toe is occasionally necessary for work, depending on location, and I have bad fashion sense so the extra personalization of 2 tone trumps what someone else thinks of how they look on my feet!
Good info in the vid, though!
I saw a video by a shoe polisher who polishes a 'worn out pair of Nick's'. They had a few scuffs but looked like they had never been worn outside of a building and were basically new. Oh, and they were two tone.
That's neat!
The future of at least the logger may be: Nick's hand made, or Carolina CA7522. CA7522 is the same thing as Red Wing Loggermax or Chip Super Logger, but it's right around $200 new. I see more and more people switching to it because of the price. Or of course if you want to spend more money there Nick's.
Bought a steel toe boot, I like to be prepared for situations in life in which my toes would be nice to keep. I just hope I didn't make a mistake.
Are you used to steel toe boots?
@@TheLordReverend Yeah, I wear them casually even.
@@yeenosaur2620 you should be fine bud
I have two pairs of Nicks, my work pair are steel toe. Though you can definitely feel the steel toe, it’s not uncomfortable. I wear them 8-12 hours a day on concrete and they’re the best boots I’ve ever had.
ive got a question, why is it that according to the website it is reccommended to get eyes and speed hooks as opposed to getting all eyes on your boots?
