  • The Power Rangers have been a pop culture staple for decades. We all grew up with one version or another of our favorite Rangers. But did you know 3 of the original cast members were fired? That's right, they fired 3 of the original Power Rangers and replaced them after the first season.

I was heartbroken when the original cast members were replaced, especially the Red Ranger and as a kid I just couldn't accept the new ones. We had just gotten Tommy back as the White Ranger only for the team to be broken up. For those curious about Thuy Trang & her whereabouts, sadly she is no longer with us. She passed away nearly 20 years ago on September 3rd 2001 due to suffering internal injuries from an aggressive car crash she was involved in while visiting friends. Thuy was only 27 years old when she died & would’ve turned 48 by the end of this year in December. Who knows what her future could’ve been if she was still alive embracing the positive impact she left, but at least we all can remember her for the courageous, kind & charming soul she legitimately was in & out of Power Rangers.
    RIP Thuy Trang (December 14 1973-September 3 2001)
2022 Edit/Update: So it WAS confirmed by Angela Rockwell during an interview she had with the Power Rangers Playback podcast that Thuy herself was indeed notorious for not wearing a seatbelt during car rides. (So for those I that corrected in replies from the past you can all go apeshit on me now.)
If you guys would like to know a little bit more about the accident and Thuy herself as a person, I highly recommend you watch that same episode of Power Rangers Playback on CZcams. Despite the graphic situation and revelations, the interview itself is quite interesting. But PLEASE refrain from name-calling Angela. Remember, what happened was an accident to ALL parties. Mistakes were clearly made but the damage was done. So check it out but please be nice and considerate to the actress and what she through during that horrendous day.

    - the three who played Jason, Trini & Zack walked away after negotiations failed, rather than being fired outright, this was about a 3rd of the way through season 2
    - AJJ left about a 3rd of the way into season 3 to pursue other roles
    - the show is based off of a Japanese show called Super Sentai which also changes cast & suits/powers/lore each year. Saban decided that instead of trying to create a continuous continuity between seasons/power-changes (which they DID do for 6 years) they decided to adopt the same switch-out process as Japan’s Super Sentai series each year. This changes the cast and allows each season to have its own personality and mythos.

Yes and no: everything you see from Zordon was all from one single filming all in one day, the footage was reused, looped and the mouth blurred out intentionally to hide the fact that it’s just reused footage that won’t match the dialogue. It’s no surprise that Saban were ultra cheapskates, look at the quality of costumes between the American and Japanese: Tommy’s green ranger gold armor plate looks like it came from Build-A-Bear. So true. Looking back to some of those season 2 episodes leading up to the switch, already you knew something was off. There was the already mentioned Zordon telling the rangers that not only is Tommy back, but he's now leader of the team. Wait what? Saban tried twice to get rid of the character before that when he was still the Green ranger because they only meant him to be temporary, but fans kept rebelling against the attempt. But now they were making him team leader. Then there were these sudden and constant side trips and activities that Jason, Trini and Zack were taking separately and leaving only Billy, Tommy and Kimberly to carry those episodes on their own with new friends Rocky, Adam and Aisha filling in story gaps ( of course before we found out they were to be the new Red, Black and Yellow rangers). If you were an eagle eyed kid like me, you also noticed that Jason, Trini and Zack's while demorphed were hidden a lot outside of old recycled clips that were obviously from season one. Hell they didn't even bother trying to reconcile the fact Walter had grown braids at that point and that they were showing his face from before the braids. When we did see their characters for nonrecycled dialogue, they were either always powered up and zapped into battles just in the knick of time or shown from angles that his enough of their faces to disguise the fact that Saban was using stand-ins. In both case, they were given short enough lines that hopefully from Saban's point of view kids wouldn't catch on that it wasn't Austin, Thuy or Walter speaking.

@@varietyhub2948 Ah you're right, the Cosmic Rangers are another space based power rangers group.

However there is no objective answer. These are fictional stories. We're not observing things happening, we're being told made-up narratives. The Rangers can have adventures in 1993 and [current year] simultaneously, the same way Spider-Man can graduate from high school in 1965 and still be in his mid/late-20s in 2020.
Here's the writer of the comics on this last year:
"The original TV show took place in the 1990’s, but our comic book series takes place in the modern day with cell phones and all. But because of that, some people assume they must take place in different worlds.
But if you look at the Free Comic Book Day issue, and more, the dialogue is the same as what’s in the TV show. If you look at where I dropped in the characters, like Pudgy Pig, it fits right in with the TV series. So I’ve always looked at the comic books and the TV show as being in the same timeline, and in the same continuity. I know some fans may argue against that, but that’s the way I look at it. It’s all canon to me."
If you want the comics to be canon to the TV show, they are. If you don't, they aren't. Neither is more "right" than the other, there's just the one you like more.

You can hold in your mind that Jason and others became Omega Rangers, but official power rangers media will never mention this, nor will any fan who is not aware of that specific out of canon story.

I want to add, in the original Japanese version Super Sentai it is completely normal for a new cast to replace the old after each season. They have been doing this since the third or fourth season and Super Sentai has been airing on Japanese television for 40+ years. I wouldn't be surprised if Saban picked up on that as well.
