      He would say anything! There's a very, very long list of men who would tell you that he didn't have sex with them just for the image of that character! He tried to keep his many affairs with women secret in the early years, because of his marriage to the mentally disturbed Angie. He liked to lie to the press, and what he said in the cocaine years was different from what he said in the straighter years. He liked being a mystery. He seems to have been a much better husband and father the second time around, yet still far from ordinary. In the end, most of those people seemed to still care for him, no matter what he said! RIP David.

    Mick Ronson was a major part of Bowie's sound in his early albums. A talented guitarist and arranger, his contribution/influence cannot be underestimated. Life on Mars being an example. Together with Trevor Bolder on bass and Woody Woodmansey on drums, Bowie had a tight little band with the Spiders from Mars.
    As for the lyrics, I believe they were created using the William Burroughs technique of cutting out phrases and mixing them up. There was a BBC Omnibus documentary Cracked Actor which features this.
    It would be interesting to see your reaction to the live version on the David Live album. Many songs have different arrangements on this album. Earl Slick plays guitar. It was on his Diamond Dogs tour when he was shifting towards the more soulful style of his "Young Americans" album which includes "Fame".

  • @OberonOZ
    @OberonOZ Před 3 lety +71

    The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars... thats the concept. A bisexual, alien rockstar called Ziggy Stardust, his band are the Spiders from Mars. The whole story plays out over the course of the album. It was groundbreaking then in 1972 and still rocks the world even now.
    It was the album that made Bowie a huge cult figure and eventually was the foundation for him becoming a rock legend. He reinvented himself many times - he was also Aladdin Sane (think about it hehe) , Major Tom (Space Oddity, Ashes To Ashes and Hallo Spaceboy) and the Thin White Duke amongst others. SO much great music for you to enjoy. You could certainly do worse than do a full album reaction to Ziggy Stardust! Its brilliant and mesmerising and a little bit life-altering! :)

    Yes, the whole album and his Ziggy Stardust character was a concept that deserves a complete reaction. Bowie was at the forefront of the Glam Rock style, though his band took a little convincing with the clothes and makeup. They were a bunch of guys from Hull, working class, down to earth, tough Yorkshiremen, but after they saw the attention Bowie was getting from the girls it was..."Pass me that eyeliner!" Don't worry too much about all the lyrics making sense, he was being deliberately enigmatic most of the time. Bowie would use a technique of just writing down snippets and one liners, cutting them up , throwing them in the air, and then seeing what interesting combinations would come up. Some songs though did have a narrative, 'Five years' is a great apocalyptic song from the same album.

      UK was awesome! I had the privilege of seeing them play live in person 3 times on 3 different legs of the series of 30th anniversary tours that they did shortly before singer/bassist John Wetton passed away. Unfortunately, their original musical output from the late 70's is probably a bit too obscure for the mostly Boomer audience who subscribe to this channel. I don't think UK ever got much radio airplay - - which is odd because along with their virtuoso prog musicianship, they had several memorable catchy songs.

      @@Daniel-415-Ponce Yes they did, but radio play is usually created by record companies, I think, and they just didn't have the right people promoting them, I think.

    Thank you so much for this! Great reaction! One of my favorite songs off one of my favorite albums. Definitely have to recommend "Suffragette City." Slaps so hard.

    Always loved this song--I'm old--and the other night, listening to Bowie with my daughter, I asked her to play this at my funeral, just to make one of my cousins in particular laugh when she heard "I'm An Alligator!" She has a great laugh, and I know that line would surprise her, because she's not a Bowie fan, and she wouldn't be able to stop the laugh and I think it would make all of my other cousins laugh, too, hearing her, and they would know I wanted that to happen! They'd be a captive audience then and would have to hear that gorgeous guitar solo! My last gift.

      Having them See it--the kimono, for instance--would be too much for that time and place. Maybe one will go home and watch...

    Great selection... You can do Bowie at any time! He has so much variety and great songs! True genius.. Do Station To Station, Ziggy is actually a great album to take in whole.

    One of many cherished life experiences (for those of my generation) is to listen to David Bowie on a hit of acid, preferably "blotter" ..... His lyrics take on a new meaning LoL!!

    Legend. RIP D B 🙌🏻 Bowie was the innovator originator and most people were just shocked and completely confused at his concept and experimentation. but it is so good and influential.
    Ashes to Ashes is a jam I will stop and listen to every. time.
