I love Bowie tunes from this era: Fame, Golden Years, Stay, Young Americans.
I personally think "Young Americans" is an AMAZING song. As hard to sing as any song ever sung not based on vocal gymnastics/show-off range nonsense.

This is sooooo Funky. S tier for me too. I love it & spin the vinyl 45 often. I was playing it in a soul funk mix & a DJ friend, who does funk, was amazed having never heard it & now includes it in her mixes
The 'vocal stylings' of this song are an essential characteristic of Bowie's Thin White Duke persona. A Berlin cabaret performer who feels nothing and cynically croons out romantic lyrics. The Thin White Duke character eventually birthed the Station to Station album, just a remarkable work. It's hard to fully respond to Bowie without taking each of his adopted personalities into consideration. He's really a singer/performance artist. Or maybe just wholly unique in the history of popular music.
Yeah, this feels like the culmination of that persona, and great point that his position in his career is a huge factor in listening to him. Taking in an album like Low, or Station to Station, or even Outside, should all be done with context, just makes it that much more intriguing.
MF DOOM and Eminem both did albums under different personas. Not that they are Bowie or were first. I'm just spitballing ideas of others who did that type of thing.

I remember hearing Golden Years when it was first on the radio and it’s still just as fresh and cool as it was in 1975.
Young Americans, Fame, and Golden Years all just seemed to appear at the same time and every time they came on the radio it was like you were hearing something from a different world.
Young Americans is one of my faves.
They're crazy in the coconut. This is one of *the* great Bowie songs, it funks, was miles ahead and his voice swoops and soars to brilliant effect. It feels like it could have been on Young Americans. Tres cool.

I dont understand how you guys found this song weird. Its one of Bowies gems, a masterpiece. The lyrics mean alot to me now. The truth is todays computer generated music has lost its soul and sounds weird. Im thankful i grew up when i did. We definitely had the best music.

The one segment where he essentially is rapping (around the 3 minute to 3:30 mark give or take)...before Rap was "known," is amazing. The fact that they play this song on the Classic R&B station on SiriusXM just underlines Bowie's versatility. They don't play Springsteen, Mercury/Queen, Sting on that channel...but they play Bowie...and they play this song. Thanks for sharing this incredible S Tier classic, despite what the boys gave it.

For me Station to Station is Bowie's absolute BEST. Every song KILLS. One of those rare "perfect" albums. Beautiful music.
WOW!! Love this song, A+ at least for me, really A++! Proper use of handclaps and whistling! Haha! Bowie's music has been SO inspirational to sci fi!! There's a miniseries Stephen King wrote in 1991 called "Golden Years" and this was the theme song. There are also the great BBC shows Life on Mars, Ashes to Ashes, etc. Bowie's influence goes in many directions!

I was expecting minium A+ rating. I was 14 when I first heard this one and it's been one of my favorite songs by anyone since then. Shocked that this wouldn't be an S tier for anyone who hears it.

I love love love this from Bowie. The vocals are insanely good - the range is incredible. Only Bowie. In my head this matches your reaction to Heart's "Straight On" - I don't know how you do not get lost in the sauce on either.

I was 10 when it came out, loved it immediately. A subtle soulful eargasm groove... and Bowie doing all the different vocal stuff he can do, from high to low. Still gets me in a trance.

This is from Bowies greatest album Station to Station. One of my favorite albums ever made. You guys HAVE to listen to the title track. His Magnum Opus in my opinion. It’s 10 minutes but goes by way faster.
Edit: Word on a Wing and Stay from this album are standouts too although the whole thing is terrific.
Station to Station was not a greatest hits album. But I do think it was a “distracted” album, from a time when his life was troubled, and he was trying to be and do, too many things.

When I listen to Bowie I feel like he's coming from a time and space that I will never understand. I just go for the ride and enjoy the creativity.

One thing about Bowie is you can't say he is the same old one trick pony. You should see and hear him in the 80s. Try China Girl.
The production on the song is great. Always been a favorite of mine. The cadence of his vocals along with all of the little nuances and the drums, percussion, pretty much all tracks. It's Bowie doing his typical approach a slightly different than the last great thing he wrote.

Bowie is a fine example of an Artist that doesn't rhyme merely for rhyme's sake. His musical poetry makes his songs epic and well worth the listen!

Love him or not, Bowie made some very interesting music throughout his career. Completely unafraid to take risks. I admire that.

This song is so catchy that as soon as I saw the title, it started playing in my head, that wap, wap, wap just never goes away. It is such a cool song, and production is great. Bowie was absolutely brilliant and with every album, he reinvented himself and always pressed the edges of the envelope. This is a lot different from Ziggy Stardust, Space Odity and anything else in his catalog in just about every way, other then his unique voice. I love the single hard drum beat right before he starts singing the first verse. If you haven't hit it yet, Suffragette City by Bowie is a banger.

The whole Aladdin Sane album is excellent, Lady Grinning Soul, Panic in Detroit and Aladdin Sane, excellent music. Bowie has incredible musical range.

Golden Years is a well produced song, but nowhere near the best Bowie song, but it's a song people know and request/recommend. This happens a lot on reaction channels, and it's a shame because if the first impressions are formed on the radio hits that are not the best an artist has to offer, a lot of really good songs get overlooked.

To pick a song so randomly can be troublesome. Yes, there’s something to be said for an honest reaction without much knowledge of the artist(s). But omg! when you have watched and listened to them all along their careers as they reflect both the music and politics of those points in history -
it’s such a different experience. The information that lives in our heads as we grew/grow along with these artists added/adds SO much to the experience.
Btw, I love all of Bowie and have seen him at least once a decade since Ziggy. I love Heroes (and this in a few languages) esp the live version near the Berlin Wall when it came was about to come down in 1989; And off the top of my head (and these are the more popular tunes): Young Americans, This Is Not America, I’m Afraid of Americans; Ricochet, Queen Bitch, Wild Is the Wind, Jump They Say, Cat People, China Girl, Be My Wife, John I’m Only Dancing, Oh You Pretty Things, Starman, Changes, Is There Life On Mars?, 1984 . . .
And I LOVE his cover of Springsteen’s It’s So Hard to Be Saint in the City!
And as you mentioned Panic in Detroit. I don’t have a favorite song, just a favorite of the day, but every time I hear “Aladdin Sane” I get a lump in my throat.
I'm not a huge Bowie fan. To me he is one of those artists who was not blessed with a great voice but he knows how to use his voice very well. I have not heard this track in a while, but I really like and admire it. When Bowie first came out, I thought he was too weird for me. But I do now realize that he is one of the best musical artists of my lifetime.

Guys, just rate the full album, Station to Station. This was an album heavily influenced by soul and funk. Vocally his voice dropped into that vocal register that Alex finds “ weird “. Frankly it’s more mainstream sounding and was a big hit inAmerica….compared to his Ziggy period. Bowie was considered far too weird for the American audience in 1972-73 ( Ziggy period )
Fame did launch him into the mainstream and allowed him to really stretch on Station to Station. It’s a friggin’ masterpiece. Many have already commented. This record and Hunky Dory 1971…pre Ziggy, are my two favorite Bowie records. I hope eventually you’ll get to them both.
PS - Hunky Dory features Yes keyboard player Rick Wakeman ( pre- Yes) and Station to Station features Roy Bittan, E Street band pianist. Both major talents.

I believe that you haven't hit "Changes" yet, which is one of his biggest songs. I definitely think it's the biggest one that you haven't hit, at least of his pre-1982 songs. So that's where I would go next with Bowie.

First time I remember hearing this tune was at the beginning of the CBS mini-series called Golden Years. By the time the opening credits ended I didn't care about the show anymore. I just wanted to hear this song again and again and again.

I absolutely love this song. The sad thing about reaction channels is that so much content is needed I doubt the reactors ever personally go back to the same music. Bowie especially needs time to grow on you.
I didn't like this song in the 70's. 30 yrs later, it's in a movie with a dance routine. (A Knights Tale) This crazy movie made me love it. And I have ever since. Check it out.😅

Ageeed this was Bowies best album. The Thin White Duke, TVC15 written on a cocaine addled binge. Fame written with the help of John Lennon as an “FU” to the music industry as a whole, Word on a Wing, brilliant .. on a personal note the Isolar tour of 1976 in support of the album was the third time myself seeing Bowie in his former persona’s and iterations. By far this was my favorite concert. After a strange avant-garde short film by Picssso showed on a giant screen as the opening act, the wailing guitar start of the song Station to Station got going, sitting in first row, first balcony seats angled perfectly viewing the stage, the balcony started rocking up and down due to all seated there tapping there feet in unison.
Carlos Alomar was on fire playing guitar. The tour was commonly called the Thin White Duke tour, and my experience was on March 17th evening, which in Boston as everyone knows St. Patrick’s Day is no small event either.
One of my favorite concerts, of the many attended in the 70s.
Wish I kept all my ticket stubs, think this concert cost $9.50 😉. True story
Most paid back then was 1975 Rolling Stones who commanded $15.50, with Billy Preston on keyboards 😎

@@cdcaleo I personally like it but everyone has a personal taste. I manage a store that sells extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars. Not everyone is going to like what I like nor like something as much as I do. The same will go for music. Everyone has their own personal tastes and biases. There are songs, as well as movies, etc, that I didn’t like as much when I first saw/heard them but eventually I did come to like them more. They may do the same, they may not. To each their own.
One of my favorite Bowie songs. Maybe it would grow on you? Maybe it rises in the context of other Bowie tunes? My first exposure to Bowie other than the radio was Changes One. This was definitely near the top of the heap for me on that album.

Station to Station will still be listened to in 100 years, one of the greatest albums of the 20th century, six superb songs.
Station to Staton (maybe his best to me) and TVC 15 (guitars are fricking awesome too !! ) are amazing songs from this album !! Golden Years was on the radio all the time
Bowie was definitely a unique, diverse musician. My favorite albums were The Man Who Sold the World, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, and Diamond Dogs. You could do a comparison reaction to Bowie's version of The Man Who Sold the World and the Curt Cobain/Nirvana version. ✌️

No Bowie playlist should be without this song. I'd give it an A or A- at lowest. When I'm in that exact mood, maybe borderline S tier. This brings me to what I think is the problem with how Andy and Alex rate things though too: so much of it is trying to compare it to other songs instead of just giving it it's own due. I don't care if I think Bowie has 53 S tier songs, it's not going to stop me from giving song 54 that rating too, even if it's not as standout as 35 of the others. It is what it is regardless of other songs. I mean, am I rating a song or an artist's entire catalog at the same time?
When i was but a wee lad, I thought this song was about living in your golden years,, when you were old. Never listened to the words, BUT whwn all y'all played it, and it's been several years since I've heard the song, i looked up the lyrics. It appears i thought wrong, as is my wont.
By my definition, I am well i to my golden years. Im on the older side of 70, but this song is saying the now is the golden years. Enjoy today. Sometimes you just have to live in and enjoy the moment.
When my brothers and i get together, we talk about some, at the time, terrible things which happsnrd to us, you know teeage angst type thing, so life destrying at the time, and we laugh about it now.

I got on the Bowie train starting with Hunky Dory and his first American tour. There is nothing like wearing out the grooves to every new record to prepare for the next one and to really appreciate the journey he was taking us on. For me, it would be the worst torture to have to be introduced to artists like Bowie or Dylan etc. by listening to isolated tracks like you guys have to do.
At 14 years old when this song came out, it took a couple of listens before it really started to grow on me, now it's one of my favorites.
I entered to the Bowie sphere in the 80's with Ashes to Ashes, Modern Love and the whole Labyrinth movie. I went back to his 70's era with this song, Fame, Spiders from Mars, Life on Mars and Young Americans.
To me this is one of the main songs that marks how different Bowie is from song to song, from album to album.
This song is familiar if you're a Heath Ledger fan. In the movie "A Knight's Tale" this was the song played at the ball after one of the jousting tournaments. It starts slow, like medieval times, then slowly goes to full blown rock.
You need to listen again…
