Note: this lecture highlights the historical nuances as to the age of consent in medieval societies. Laws and social norms in medieval societies differed to ours. This lecture does not encourage marriage with younger females (of any particular age) in any shape or form. All listeners are advised to follow the law of the land in this regard.
    Best wishes.

Muhammad, it is claimed, was the perfect example for all time as instructed by gibreel in the eternal never changing Koran
How then is it not ok to marry a 6 year old when I'm 54 ???

@@jattnijjerable dear jatt, thank you for the very important question. Please watch the entire lecture and you will get the answer to this question. I will present a summary here. Our Prophet is indeed our role model and it is him who taught us to be vary of the "social norms" we live in. He taught us to avoid practices that may be deemed abnormal in a place or time. If he was alive today, he would have told us to move with times. He would never change his moral values, nor do we. He would, however, respect the "norms" (as long as they are not immoral) of any given society. He himself abstained from controversial matters in his times. Getting married to younger females was not one of them. No one raised an objection to this marriage until the 20th century. Now it has become abnormal therefore we do not have to indulge in such practices. Our Prophet (peace be upon him) would have taught us so. Having conquered Mecca, he wished to bring the door of the Ka'ba down to the ground level but he abstained due to the potential controversy such a project may have caused. He told his wife, Aishah, that if it were not for your people (the tribe of Quraysh) I would have brought the door of the Ka'ba down. We learn from this very example that the Prophet would never allow his followers to ignore the moral/social norms of their times. This is why we dont have to get married to younger females today, as it is against the law and the "norm" in most countries. In this we are following the teachings of our Prophet (peace be upon him). The Prophet responded to his followers with solutions every time they asked about the coming age. We follow the Prophet in light of all his teachings. We do not view the life of the Prophet through a narrow lense many of his critics use. I hope this response was satisfactory. Best wishes :)

@@MrAdnanRashid I have read your reply but I am not convinced. I have also watched your lecture but I am not convinced either. I am Muslim, by the way, and my doubts are not based on what liberal secular law says. Rather, its based on what the Qur'an says.
      1. You know Adnan, the Prophet (SAW) was not sent to establish what was widely practiced as the code for humanity. He (SAW) was sent to establish what is RIGHT and JUST as a code of practice for the whole of humanity for ALL times. So, even if child marriage was common to his age and later ages, it doesn't mean that he would indulge in it and thus, establish it as a code of practice for the rest of humanity, for ALL times. Because if the Prophet (SAW) did it, Muslims (and the rest of humanity) can do it, though they don't have to. And that (child marriage) is a controversial issue in today's world, not just as a result of social conditioning, but due to established scientific facts.
      2. Riding camels to Mecca may be inconvenient today, but it is neither wrong, nor immoral or unjust. Marrying young girls is wrong, immoral and unjust because it affects the girls health (physical and mental) and negatively impacts society.
      3. Hypothetically, if the Prophet (SAW) had buried his daughters alive, would he have been criticised by the Quraysh? Of course NOT, because that was the common practice. So citing all these writers and their lack of criticism against the Prophet (SAW) for marrying a 9 year old (Astagfirllah) doesn't lend credence to your arguments, unfortunately.
      4. The Qur'an did not lay "puberty" as the criteria for marriage, so why you try to do this is beyond me. The condition for marriage is on reaching "the age of marriage" (not puberty) and this presupposes both "physical" and "mental/psychological" readiness. Do you think that a 9 year old child is mentally ready for marriage; to be pregnant and fulfil other wifely duties?
If you don't think that a 9 or even 10 year old girl is mentally ready for motherhood (a component of marriage), how could you accept a hadith that claims that the Prophet (SAW) married a 9 year old (Astagfirllah)?

*People who claim that Prophet Muhammad was a pedophile are ignorant of human history*
First of all the anti-Islam people who lived during the Prophet’s time didn’t even make any comments about his marriage to Aisha. 7th century Arabs attacked the Prophet for everything that they could. They called him, a soothsayer, a madman, a magician, a poet, a liar, and anything bad that they could possibly come up with but they never said anything about his marriage to Aisha (RA). Some people try to argue that his marriage was even taboo for his time but it clearly isn’t true because of this fact that no one criticized him.
After 7th century up until the 19th century, many wrote against Prophet Muhammad as the religion of Islam spread. Jews, Christians, and other non-Muslims tried to paint him as a warlord and an unholy person. Yet they never used the age of Aisha (RA) against him. Not a single person. No one from the Medieval Critics, the Renaissance times, the Enlightenment Period, the Industrial Revolution, or the Victorian Era had something negative to say about the Prophet’s marriage to Aisha (RA).
One critic who stands out to me is the Christian Orientalist Humphrey Prideaux who wrote a whole book (published in 1697) dedicated to attacking the Prophet, titled: *“True Nature of Imposture Fully Display'd in the Life of Mahomet”* The reason why his writing stands out to me is because he mentions the marriage with Aisha (RA) and he goes a step further and justifies it:
“Ayesha was then but six years old, and therefore [Muhammad] did not bed her ‘till two years after, when she was full eight years old. For *it is usual in those hot countries,* as it is all India over, which is in same clime with Arabia, *for women to be ripe for marriage at that age,* and also bear children the following year.“ - (Page 41)
This is the only piece of evidence I need really. A man attacking the Prophet is justifying his marriage of all things. But I’ll continue with more explanation.
Others such as Ignác Goldziher and Theodor Nöldeke wrote a lot about Islam but never had anything negative to say about the Prophet’s marriage to Aisha. They all mentioned that detail and moved along without mentioning anything negative about it. Historian Thomas Carlyle had nothing bad to say about the Prophet. Thomas dedicated a whole section of his book “On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History” to the Prophet. He praised the Prophet and believed that the Prophet was unjustly misrepresented by people.
*Here are some historian commentaries on pre-19th century history on this issue:*
“At what age is a person capable of making an informed decision about whether or not to engage in sex? Would it be 7, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, or 21? Over the last 300 years, all the ages listed above were thought to be that magic age at which one could make such a decision. And all the ages listed above have, at various times, been inscribed into law as the age of consent to sex.” - (Adolescent Sexuality: A Historical Handbook and Guide, Carolyn Cocca, p.15)
“It needs to be remembered that many Medieval widows were not old, important heiresses *were often married between the ages 5 and 10* and might find themselves widowed while still in their teens.” - (A Medieval Miscellany, Margaret Wade Labarge, page 52)
“In Medieval and early modern European societies, the age of marriage remained low, with *documented cases of brides as young as seven years, although marriages were typically not consummated until the girl reached puberty* (Bullough 2004). Shakespeare's Juliet was just 13, and there is no hint in the play that this was considered to be exceptional. The situation was similar on the other side of the Atlantic; Bullough reports the case in 1689 of a nine-yearold bride in Virginia. At the start of the nineteenth century in England, *it was legal to have sex with a 10 year-old girl."* - (Internet Child Pornography: Causes, Investigation, and Prevention, Richard Wortley, Stephen Smallbone, p.10)
“Until the late 20th century U.S. age of consent laws specifically names males as perpetrators and females as victims. *Following English law, in which the age was set at 12 in 1275 and lowered to 10 in 1576, ages of consent in the American colonies were generally set at 10 or 12.* The laws protected female virginity, which at the time was considered a valuable commodity until marriage.” - (Sex and Society, Marshall Cavendish (2010), p.54)
“In 1962, the American Law Institute recommended that the legal age of consernt to sex- that is, the age below which sex is defined as statutory rape- be dropped in every state to age 10 (Katchadourian and Lund 1972: 439). In fact, until the mid 1960s, the legal age of consent in Delaware was 7 (Kling, 1965: 216). *So a 50 year old man could legally have sexual intercourse with a 7 year old boy or girl.* " - (Opposing Hate Speech, Professor of Sociology Anthony Joseph Paul Cortese, p. 85)
“...the nineteenth century, the minimum age of
consent for sexual intercourse in most American states was 10 years. In Delaware it was only 7 years.” (Parental Kidnapping in America: An Historical and Cultural Analysis, Maureen Dabbagh, p. 128)
“These early laws specified that a girl consenting to sex had to be at least 10 to 12 years old in most states, with a few specifying ages as old as 14 or 16. In Delaware, the age of consent was seven, based on ancient English laws setting the age squire." - (Teenage Sex and Pregnancy: Modern Myths, Unsexy Realities, Mike A. Males, p. 40)
“The law governing the age of consent has changed drastically in the United States during this century. Most states codified a statutory age of consent during the nineteenth century, and *the usual age was ten years.”* - (A Guide to America’s Sex Laws, Richard A. Posner & Katherine B. Sillbaugh, p.44)
There are so many references that one could give just to show how normal this was back then. The only reason why people are so shocked when they hear about the Prophet’s marriage to Aisha is because of Colonialism. People are mentally colonized. They are conditioned to believe that Liberal and Secular Laws are the yardstick for humanity. That is simply not true.
Even by today’s standards, the Prophet’s actions is not pedophilia. A pedophile is someone who is sexually attracted to prepubescent children. He waited three years before consummation for a reason. If the Prophet’s actions was pedophilia, then every single person who did not speak out against the previous laws are all pedophiles.

Homosexuality is culturally accepted. Does it follow that homosexuality is therefore moral? antebellum slavery was a legal practice in America. Does it follow that therefore slavery was ok. Come on man, these arguments are weak. We all know that legality does not mean morality.

Hello brother, Adnan said " He told his wife, Aishah, that if it were not for your people (the tribe of Quraysh) I would have brought the door of the Ka'ba down. ". Here bringing down the door was permissible act, he could've done it. But he didn't. This was the cultural reference and encouragement to blend with the times and cultures.. But homosexuality is not permissible act under all circumstances in Islam. Hence it's prohibited. This will explain why we cannot marry a young woman in this era... but was permissible at that period and for everyone was a norm.
      Take care brother! Stay safe!

Assolamolaykum brother! Very informative and may Allah bless you for it. I am confused about why Europeans seem to chose age numbers. For example a girl may have become mature at eight in the past by starting her menses, but some would have started her menses at age 12 or 13. Do you know why they chose numbers so arbitrarily? I believe that Islam is the only law giving system that considers the biological with the mental state of the woman. Did European law consider the mental maturity of these females as well or were they just seen as mature because they were 10?

Jeremy Rifkin is not a historian. Not about demography/history
Professor Richard Wortley and Professor Stephen Smallbone wrote about internet porn. Not about demography/history
Sir Edward Coke was a lawyer and MP. Not about demography/history.
Where are the historical sources underpinning your claims? So far removed from mainstream demographics that puts Northern Europe at raised marriage ages from 14th to the 18th century.
    All very strange.
