Sheikh Adnan Rashid is a don... before his talk on Indian Muslim scholars, I literally had no idea how important and what kind of role Indian Islamic scholarly thought has played in Islamic history. Would love to hear more about the Central Asian scholars.. i know Bukhari (RA) is from Uzbekistan ashamed to say I dont know anyone else from that part of the world. Africa as well.
In the UK most of us have been bought up with the Saudi scholars and the students of Madinah, which is good but its great to hear Islamic takes from other parts of the world.

The word "Hindu" was originally a Persian word for the ethnicity who lived in the Indus Valley civilization. It did not denote a religion. So both Pagans and Muslims were also called Hindu. The British turned it into a word to group all the various ancient Pagan religions, cults and cultures in the subcontinent who did not ascribe to Islam. They were basically trying to pit the non Muslims against the Muslims because at the time Muslims were the largest religious grouping that threatened British power. It was a sophisticated way to alienate Muslims as foreigners by stripping them of their Hindu ethnic identity. It's similar to how European Colonial powers managed to alienate European Muslims as "Turks" despite most Muslims not being Turkic. Even the Ottoman Royalty themselves were less than 5% Turkic by the 18th century. And the Ottoman court language itself had less than 10% Turkic words. The only reason Turkey is called Turkey today is because a European backed secularist dictator calling himself "father of the Turks" forced everyone to speak Turkish in the early 1900s.

The economy is actually quite resilient, check out the book "Pakistan a hard country", Pakistans shadow economy is close to 50% of nominal GDP. There was a balance of payments issue, which has been dealt with thanks to support from the Saudis, along with deep corruption, which is being rooted out. If anything Pakistans economic trajectory is upwards.

@@entername_ Export numbers have gone up, check the statistics. This political instability is bad and Pakistan still needs to expand it's export base further, and once it does that, to a serious degree, these BOP issues and having to go to the IMF will be ancient history. I see Technology as the one area that can add to exports in a big way in the medium term. Another short term issue has been the global rise in commodity prices. A lot of Pakistan forex reserves (which in turn have been built up (in part) by borrowing) are spent on importing oil and gas, so any increase in commodity prices is going to affect the value of the rupee. The way to deal with this is domestic E&P in the energy space, this needs multiple sectors to be in sync, also domestic focus on renewables beyond hydro. 2 of Pakistans biggest issues right now are export numbers that are not good enough to stave off BOP issues and adequately deal with the debt situation, and issues around energy. If these are properly dealt with, and we see the sort of GDP growth rates seen elsewhere in Asia, Pakistan becomes one of the strongest economies globally.

Islam did not need introduction to Indians. Islam is already well introduced into hearts and minds of Indians. Indian Hindus, especially educated Hindus, learn about Islam from young age because Muslim culture is part of Indian culture. We don't see South Asian Muslims as the "other", but we "Hindus" (actual term is Dharmic) have a very ancient culture that dates back to 3000BCE to the creation of the Rig Vedas, and that comforts us. We fundamentally believe in reincarnation and karma, and these are things that all the great early Indians espoused including Siddhartha Gautama the Buddha. So for educated Hindus, Islam is an important part of Indian culture, but we have our own great belief system that is compelling.

Wow this was so interesting - I had no idea about half of the history of India other than the fact that it was ruled by Mughals for a long time.
Despite being Muslim myself, I do think there would have been some forceful conversions here and there - the Mughals were far from perfect and did discriminate from time to time.
Also I was quite shocked to hear that the Maratha empire was devastating for India - I will do my own research into this. Furthermore has anyone realised that some of the MOST islamophobic ethnicities of India tend to be the Marathas and Gujaratis?
