  • Gay homosexuals Nick and Joseph spoil Great Freedom (German: Große Freiheit) - a 2021 Austrian drama film directed by Sebastian Meise.
Premise: In post-war Germany, liberation by the Allies does not mean freedom for everyone. Hans is repeatedly imprisoned under Paragraph 175, which criminalizes homosexuality. Over the decades, he develops an unlikely bond with his cellmate Viktor.

While Hans clearly loved sex, he loved love more. He was sacrificial in all of his relationships. He gave up his freedom to give Leo his. He tried to create a future to believe in with Oskar. Oskar knew that they could never be happy at that time because they would not be free to live outside together. The videotape they had made, showed what they had but was lost due to outside surveillance causing further incarceration. I believe that Hans realized that when he was finally free, he had to give it up to be with Viktor. He had all the pleasures before him but chose Viktor because he loved him. He bought the only brand of cigarette they would smoke before he broke the glass.
I didn't need more back story on Hans outside life because freedom was more a state of mind than a location for him. The opening clips showed that he craved the human connection. He wanted to be free to love whom ever.
I loved Franz Rogowski's performance. His expressions, mannerisms, reactions evoked a range of emotions.
Viktor's mental state after 20 years had deteriorated to the point of self harm hence shooting up before his parole hearing. Initially disgusted with homosexuality he grew to understand the craving to be loved. To be touched. No matter the human involved. I don't think what happened between Hans and himself could have happened with anyone else. He grew to love him after seeing first hand how much he had suffered. The scene in which he held Hans in the courtyard defined their relationship. Terrible wig aside, Georg Friedrich's performance as Viktor was also good. Anger, buried frustration, empathy, desperation, acceptance, resignation. Minimal body language, tremendous facial with his eyes.
From this lengthy post, it's obvious. I loved the film.

This is truly turning into one of my favourite queer films of all time. I love how everything in the movie is just a matter of fact, the film doesn't dumb it down for the audience, and it is just raw and impactful. The acting is sublime. I can't stop thinking about it. As we saw from Hans and Viktor's friendship towards the end - love is ultimately just love; and Hans' willingness to go back to jail is so poignant and effed and powerful and thought provoking. I love it.

LOVE this film. If you ever see, Gefangen (Locked Up)(2004), another gay love/prison film, you'll see that they stole the ending!

That must be so difficult to watch. My grandfather was in a Japanese POW camp; the photos of him right after being rescued at 75 pounds are haunting. I have the same reaction to The Machinist. Thanks for the review! 💖

Love the hair Joseph 😜. Is Nick hiding something under the sockhat? Is he growing his hair out or does he really have rare hair (bald)?
Grear review, keep ‘em comin’, love ya!

I’m such a bad hairstylist. I just use Selsun Blue, let my hair air dry, then use a hair sponge to define the curls.

i haven't watched a lot of queer love stories that take place in a prison but i did watch locked up that jörg andreas made in 2004 and they end in the same way. is that a coincidence or a pretty common ending?

interesting to see your thoughts! quick correction: when viktor asks hans to perform oral sex, its mainly because of the trade off that theyre making, because viktor has to deliver the bible to oskar. this scene also didnt take place in '67, but in the scene in the 50's, i think it was 56

I thought this movie was going to be devestating and maybe brutal like the latin american film Prince but it turned out to be just a drama set in prison, I dunno, I just gave a sour face by the last half hour. Reminded me of the street hustler film Sauvage (WILD) 2018 that one is more haunting
