  • DIY cedar shutters built to accentuate our new house paint. I made them from inexpensive fence pickets and turned out perfect! Cedar is a great choice for outdoor projects because they are naturally rot and insect resistant. In this video I show you why I chose cedar fence pickets to save on cost and how I built them to last.

    You've done a beautiful job on your shutters. I'm looking for inspiration and I do believe that I've grabbed some great take-aways from you! So Thank You! #1 - I'm definitely going to grab the cedar fence boards! #2 - I LOVE the hinges idea! Hopefully Home Depot sells those 🤞🙏😉 #3 - I didn't think about using stain!! 🤯😍😃 I'm going to be painting mine black but Im going to test transparent black stain along with my deck transparent stain color, Tugboat. Thanks for sharing your ideas! 💯👍

    Awesome video just love the way they look and that they open and close..have you closed them on bad weather and how do they did they work out

      @TheSharkShed  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thank you! They do open and close, but they are meant to just be decorative, so I have never closed them.

    Have you had to stain them again? Is your window trim hardie board?

    • @TheSharkShed
      @TheSharkShed  Před 3 měsíci

      It's been just over a year and a half since we built these and they are showing no signs of needing re-staining. They are holding up very well!

    Can you add the hinge kit into the description block above?

    • @TheSharkShed
      @TheSharkShed  Před 4 měsíci

      Sorry, I reused the same hinge kit from the old shutters. They were in great shape so I decided to reuse instead of replacing them.

    Awesome project! Thanks for sharing.
    What was the spacing between the vertical shutter boards? Were the (3) horizontal battens on the front of the shutter screwed in from the back?

    • @TheSharkShed
      @TheSharkShed  Před rokem

      I used a 1/4" for the spacing and I attached everything from the back to keep the fasteners hidden.
      And sorry for the delayed response. I typically try to answer questions in the comments much quicker than this. Appreciate you reaching out!!

      @@TheSharkShed , that's hilarious. I was watching with my wife and said "Well, I like it all except that I don't like that you can see the screws; I would have done them all from the back." Only later did I realize that you had them folded in (closed direction) in that shot. :-) I felt kind of silly! It is sad, though, that the hinge straps can't be seen most of the time, as they add a lot to the look.

    • @TheSharkShed
      @TheSharkShed  Před 4 měsíci

      @@nevillenewman2785 I agree! I think the hinge straps on the front would have given it a lot of character.

    1/8th of an inch 5 times ?

    • @TheSharkShed
      @TheSharkShed  Před 2 měsíci

      Yeah, I guess it would have been less than 1/8 of an inch. Probably 1/32 to maybe 1/16. Good catch. We ended up at about 1/4 inch boards. It's been almost 2 years and they have held up very well!

    • @robertfultz7423
      @robertfultz7423 Před 2 měsíci +1

    Whats color siding and trim you used?

    • @TheSharkShed
      @TheSharkShed  Před 11 měsíci

      The Trim is a regular white trim. I believe the house color is Sherwin Williams Midnight Blue.
