I’m a Celtic fan, but I’ve been on the receiving end of Smiths brilliance as Rangers manager but I’ve sensed a profound respect from all Celtic fans down the years. My over riding memory of Smith was that he always had class even when his brilliant Rangers teams were hammering Celtic always felt respect and decency were at the heart of everything Smith did. As a child in the 90s, I took him for granted. When he returned, I was in my mid-20s and I was able to appreciate his true genius. He was a legend in every sense of the word. RIP Gaffer.
As a Man United supporter living in ROI with a strong interest in Celtic I know how much Walter Smith's contribution was highly regarded by all at United including Sir Alex during his period with us in 2004.
