  • In this video, I upgrade my head unit. I remove the MyWay/RNEG radio that came with my Citroen C5 X7 2.0Hdi and install a much better RNEG2/RT6 unit that has USB and A2DP Bluetooth streaming.

I live in Leiria, Portugal and i have a C5 1.6 Diesel Tourer from 2012. would like to ask you why you chose this route instead of the Android way?
Please keep up the good work because I’ll keep watching it.

Thank you for the kind words. I didn't go for the android route for a few reasons. First, to the best of my knowledge, it means no steering wheel button integration. Second, I am not a fan of the sticky outy screens, and third, I utterly abhor touchscreens.

I almost had a heart attack when I saw you yanking that facia the second time to connect that hazzard light switch....good thing they made that plastic a bit durabble.
That is a great upgrade, I use the USB only. I stopped using the radio ages ago, once I had to use the AUX outlet, but I never use anything else, except...
    Here's a little detail I forgot:
at random times, very occasionally, (3 or 4 times a year), after being parked for the night, or after parking for a while, no specific time, it could be 15 minutes, it could be 8 hours, so after that, I unlock and enter the car and turn on the engine, and THEN I turn on the audio (I turn it off before shutting the engine, that's how "I" do it, not that it's right or wrong or it "should" be done like that....),
so I turn on the audio, and instead of continuing to play the USB music, as it was doing when I shut down, it now plays the radio, and it only recognizes the radio and CD player. Not the USB/AUX/bluetooth. It also does not connect to my phone.
So for the whole "session", I don't have a USB/AUX/Phone. It could be a whole trip, but I won't have the phone connected to the car.
BUT.....after the driving session, I park and shut down and lock it, and when I return (could be the next day or 20 minutes later), I start the engine for another session, and everything is fine. The audio recognizes everything.
It just looks like a reboot issue, but it doesn't show any other symptoms to tie it with. It's totaly random. I have to point out that after changing to a brand new battery, It never happened so far, so a half or dying battery may be the cause.
I have the RD4 unit, the basic one, so that could play a part in it. Maybe your unit has better software and it doesn't do these kind of things.
When opening the hole for the USB inside that tray, make sure that socket doesn't hit anything in the back when it's closed.
To be honest, THAT is a way better position for the USB outlet than the armrest. I mean....they put the cup holder inside that armrest, and if you have a USB plugged there, the cup keeps bumping on the usb stick. That is a destruction waiting to happen. It forced me to buy a small outline USB stick, just to avoid that danger, but before I get that new stick, I used it with an improvised 90° elbow, so that the USB stick will stay close to the wall and not hit the coffee cup.
And I had to make my own elbow, because the ones sold in the market were equaly long and protruding far inside the armrest, again hitting the coffee cup, (or the cup hitting them).
Oh and about that expantion tank tube I mentioned the other day, here's a fiew pics to show what I mean:
    postimg.cc/wRvwTJnj
    postimg.cc/BtnpFrnL
    postimg.cc/v42bYFTr
That "PA12" you see written there is a type of Nylon, I assume like PA 11, which is the typical number of the so called "nylon" tubes, (IF my info is correct), so I guess the PA 12 should be a notch better nylon than the PA 11...???....I don't know, however, nylon is a pretty durable plastic, it can hold the temperatures of an engine bay and the coolant, and it can last a long time, that's probably why nothing happens to the tube itself, but rather to the connection points. Those connectors are fused with the tube, and the way it is routed, it's in the middle of the working area, and this way, anyone trying to do any kind of work there, will give it a bump and brake it.
That's why I switched to Teflon tube with custom connectors.
    postimg.cc/ykF77ps8
    postimg.cc/9Rvn7PzL
    postimg.cc/XrLL6WPc
    postimg.cc/21yLgsLg
which leave all that area free for the technitian to work, without worrying about braking anything.
See? I think of the technitians too.
Maybe nothing would ever happen to it....maybe something WOULD happen to it....either way, I consider it to be one of those tiny little details, that when they DO go wrong, they go unnoticed and they cause major damage if you don't take care of them.
I know you may not have the means to switch to something like mine, (if you can, do it), but even so, just knowing the information is crutial. Keep an eye on it and make sure nothing happens to it.
    Great job.

Oh and one more thing: my USB/Aux unit is the factory installed, and in order to work, it needs to be programmed to the BSI, which is done through the diagbox tool. Does yours need that too? Or it works out of the box?

I’ve done the same in my 2007 C4. RD4, RD45, MyWay to finally a RT6. Bit expensive for everything but well worth it. It’s something to get used to and the Bluetooth streaming has a little delay. Have it hooked up a reversing camera and parking sensors

You're right, it IS expensive, but I can offset the cost somewhat by selling the old unit. Everything car-related is sodding expensive in this country, and I managed to sell my old RD4 + display for enough to cover the cost of my new RD45 and its corresponding display.

Fantastic video and explanation. Thank you for the content. I'm actually in the market for a 2.0 or higher C5 Tourer (manual-diesel). I'd like to get a trim that has traditional handbrake, moonroof, metallic slider panels in the boot, et cetera. Is it true if I were to get a C5 with the SatNav screen and infotainment system it would not have the capability of linking to my bluetooth phone to play music and the like? Would I have to ahead and do this installation of a new system as is displayed in this video?

    • @comcarclub
      @comcarclub  Před rokem

Thank you! If you can find that combo of panoramic roof + no trick suspension, that will be quite something as I've never seen such a combo personally, but that may vary from market to market. Maybe an early 2008/09 model with the 138bhp engine, which everyone says is great BTW.
As for the satnav screen question, that depends on the year. I'm not sure when the RT6 (the one that allows for BT streaming) was introduced but I'd wager it was around 2012. Anything earlier is probably going to be a crap one. You can tell it's an earlier to-be-avoided MyWay if it has an SD card slot. Personally, I'd get the overall spec you'd like with whatever radio, then upgrade. And if I knew what I knew today, I'd skip the RT6 altogether

    Wait....it just came to me.....
The tray under the radio, hmmm....too deep, you can't reach and remove that usb.
inside the ash tray itself,... nah, too small,
So we're left with that small opening tray, right behind the handbrake.
Now THAT is a pretty elegant place to put that USB socket, without interfearing with the cup holder, AND it's hidden. Although, you won't be able to use it any more, but it's the smallest of all anyway.
Not bad, I like it ! ! ! You could've pulled that cable in that spot in the first place, and wouldn't have to bust your chops to run it all the way to that left tray.
    I can't wait ....

Hey, I noticed in my C5 X7 that the glove compartment has a small hole, just wide enough to poke a finger through the is on the top,
So inside the glove compartment, at the top, look for a small hole, it might need to be punched or something, as mine also has more 'seams' around that hole,
anyways it looks like this hole is specifically for an AUX connection or USB, in mine there was a disconnected 3-wire cable, seemingly an aux, I don't know..
Anyways I upgraded from RD4 to RD45 which came with a new AUX connector, which I haven't had the time to manage, so my RD45 Unit is still handing 3/4 of the way inside it's cocoon..

Later, there were the NAC units, they had Android auto and BT streaming, so better for smartphone compatibility. The RNEG is by far the worst choice, IMHO. Apart from BT calls it doesn't do much.

..which isn't that great either. Sometimes it just stops and you get a black screen. But when radio is still on, try this:
Stop the car, lock the car, and wait untill there's nothing lit on the dashboard. You might even see your gauge dial make a small movement as the power is shut down. Wait a few seconds, remember you are still in a locked car. Now start the vehicle when possible. Likely the screen gives a startsplash image.
