It's our second time in Canada. On our first visit, we didn't expand our culinary horizons much. Sure, we enjoyed Lee's Donuts at Granville Island, Montreal-style bagels at Rosemary Rocksalt, and a variety of eats and treats from local restaurants, but we didn't go all-in on exploring the foods Canada is known for. This time, we delved deeper. We tried poutine, butter tarts, Nanaimo bars, and more. What'd we think?

You cannot buy butter tarts you have to have homemade butter tarts. Store-bought butter tarts are OK but mama makes the best
True
True enough...what time will they be ready? I'm coming on over! Lol!
Nonsense. Buy from a bakery. Delicious
It depends on the tart manufacturer. Some store bought are really as good as homemade.
My dad's butter tarts are to die for
The best poutine is the basic chips gravy and curds, it does not need anything else.
nope it needs maple bacon in it LOL
@@MuffHam And extra curds! :P
I live in Québec and you couldn't be more wrong. Traditional poutine is indeed what you said, but that's like eating a cheese pizza. Yes it
I actually prefer shredded extra old white cheese on my poutine, it melts and displaces much better. I can't really care much for curds.
@@daniellysohirka5079 we call that a “sad poutine” because it’s generally what people do when they don’t have any curds but still want to make a poutine.
In my part of Québec people like their curds fresh and squeaky, but I prefer refrigerating my curds and letting them age a few days so that they melt and stretch on the outside while still being gooey and chewy on the inside.
Shredded cheese just melts into the gravy and congeals everything together when the gravy cools down. Definitely not ideal.
Great to see you guys enjoying some Canadian classics, a true ketchup chip tasting Is lays ketchup chips and all dressed ruffles 👌
I agree. I didn't think it was the best company to try ketchup chips. First ones I see trying them on CZcams, not liking them
agreed has to be lays and ruffles for sure Old Dutch is not the best test for any chips!
I agree 😊
As far as Old Dutch is concerned, I only like a couple things from the Humpty Dumpy line, but the main Old Dutch line is,,, I find their chips way too greasy, in fact I prefer a lot of store brands to old dutch
Smarties are specifically made in a nut/peanut free facility and are safe for children to share.
My understanding is that only the Smarties in the small boxes are peanut free. Smarties sold in other packaging does not have the symbol or guarantee.
American smarties are called Rockets in Canada.
what Americans call smarties, we call Rockets.. what we call smarties.. they say m&m's but nope.. not the same at all.
@@carebear032007 call me an anti-Canadian, but I prefer M&Ms to smarties
@@Crybaby-Media Canadians love M&Ms too, so no worries!
Coffee crisp chocolate bars are the absolute best 👌
The Eat-More bars are like a lifestyle, laid-back, savoured in the moment, and chewed slowly. If you are chewing at a regular pace for the sake of chewing, you won't notice the textures, the nuts, the caramelly notes. Imagine a cowboy eating it and just keeping it simple. I am a Vancouverite and grew up eating these, it is indeed a nice snack once every few moons. After school, going to the movies, and sometimes just as a pit stop at the gas station.
And yes @10:10, we call them chocolate bars here unless they are granola bars, etc.
Eat more are the chocolate bars I take out hunting in my back pack. And they are good fresh or a year old.
Eatmores are the fisherman s and hunters bar as they don't melt and can be eaten frozen
Hazelton BC here, I like to keep a eatmore in my lunch box.
YES!
Lays actually made limited edition Grilled Cheese and Ketchup chips for a while here in Canada.
In Canada , what you call Smarties are called Rockets . Same packaging, same candy.
Its funny hearing you call them candy cars. We call them chocolate bars.
The candy you called Smarties is called Rocket in Canada. 😋
Try miss Vickie’s chips next time. The spicy pickle is soooooo good.
Miss Vickie’s are available all over the States.
Do you also have spicy pickles? 🤤
Soooo good.
Lays make the best ketchup chips.
Ruffles are best at all dressed.
Just so you know, you guys come off as ultra Canadian. Mannerisms, interactions, even your accent. Gun to my head I'd have guessed your Canadian.
We are from Minnesota... which is US Canada! :D
I thought he was Mark Hamill!
@@visaman I've heard that before.
@chrisplusmelissa - Did you know that some Americans have traveled to Canada in the summertime with their skies, thinking that they would be able to actually use them in Canada at that time of the year?
When you eat your Smarties, you eat the red ones last (from an old ad - the tune is in my head now!). Poutine with bacon is nice; yes, adding insult to injury, but for testing your heart...... Nanaimo bars come in mint flavour as well. Such goodies!
" When you eat your Smarties do you eat the the red ones last? Do you crunch them very slowly? Or munch them very fast? Eat that candy and milk chocolate...but tell me when I ask... when you eat your Smarties do you eat the red ones last? CRUNCH!
@@ontheroadwithyode390 Yup; that song is stuck in my head! For 50 years now. Or more!
@@ontheroadwithyode390 Ah, nostalgia. Juicey fruit too.
Thanks fort your video....but you limited yourselves to the West coast (Vancouver). You gotta come here to Montreal, where you can sample THE WORLD"S BEST smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's Deli (New York gave up a long time ago...), try AUTHENTIC Montreal bagels (not "Montreal-style") from St-Viateur Bagel (I recommend the cream cheese and smoked salmon bagel sandwich) and of course, an authentic old country, home cooked Italian meal which I will happily provide.
Don't forget orange julep 😜
Butter tarts are definitely an Ontario thing. “Real” butter tarts have a light, buttery crust, and have a delicious gooey filling. I’m not a fan of raisins but do enjoy pecan. My mother freezes hers and I can never wait for them to defrost, so they are a delightful not ice cream ice cream treat when I visit her. Midland Ontario has an annual Butter Tart festival that is a diabetic nightmare. So good… (lots of other foods there as well)
Lies - Butter tarts are enjoyed everywhere across Canada.
It's not about the chips and candy bars. You are both charming , personable and entertaining. Happy travels! I would like to go there for authentic poutine.
Thank you for the kind comments!
Midland Ontario has a yearly buttertart festival. Oh wow yum
I'm so glad you guys went to a quebec place for poutine, so often i see people "trying poutine for the first time" and its not poutine, if its a french name you know you got the real deal :)
It seems they've been to La belle patate in vancouver, maybe owned by quebecers that moved over but they are still in BC.
@@varnakiel yes thats what i meant by quebec place, the cook is quebecois and uses real fromage en crottes 👌
First time watching you two, great video and personality’s . Im subscribing
How can anyone take just on e bite of Nanaimo bar? This treat is God's gift to Canada! And butter tarts, a bit of love in a pastry!
awesome to see a jedi enjoy our snacks!
I can’t eat both the Nanaimo bars or the butter tart except for a small nibble because it is too sweet for me. I will say that most families have their own butter tart recipes. I live in Victoria on the southern tip of Vancouver Island. Butter tarts are made with lots of butter & yes the tart is the size😁🇨🇦
Ever travelled up to Nanaimo for Nanaimo bars?
The Nanaimo bar would've nuked anything after it. I'm surprised they even tasted any part of the butter tart.
You need to have HAWAIIAN pizza. It was invented in Chatham Ontario, has been my favourite since having it at the Satellite Restaurant. ( I like to add green peppers al9ng with the gam and bacon) Yum!
Canadian palates on average go more for the vinegar base chip flavour or the sweet of American palates. Thou savory, savory and sweet complement.
Smoky /savoury /bacon
Ketchup /vinegar / dill pickle
Great Video as always. You guys should have tried "beaver tails" if they were available... They were invented in the province of Quebec long ago as "Queue de Castor" and are stunningly good... Like flat doughnut topped with great stuff like chocolate, cinnamon and more...
We haven't and I remember seeing them and wondering what they were. Next time!
@@chrisplusmelissa Just don't eat a large poutine first - beaver tails are large and filling - bring your appetite
When you bought only ONE Butter Tart & ONE Nanaimo Bar I immediately thought,
"uh-oh! Big mistake!"
You should try the Crunchie Bar, Kraft Dinner, and Beavertails.
lol that's what I thought too. I think you need to get a few more.
being cold in Van brings a chuckle out of most Canadians.
Canadian here. Never had poutine in my life but, it strikes me more as an after-bar binge than "delicacy" . :)
Boy, you really give yourselves tough assignments but thank God you’re up to the task!!😉
It is a tough job! :D
The butter tarts looked like the kind found in a supermarket. Ontario has the best butter tarts..
Yeah, butter tarts are not very typical of Québec food. There are lots of other desserts that deserve to be discovered. Saint Donat maple sugar pie, for instance. The one with swirls of dough on top.
Go for good food not the crap
You should go to a neighbourhood bakery to get good butter tarts. Also, try to find ones that have raisins in them.
Ontario? Any homemaker with a modicum of talent can make a decent butter tart!
Not really, you want a nice flaky pastry with a gooey filling.
love the hockey game going on in the poutine restaurant. So Canadian.
never seen sap suckers
ketchup chips are #1 junk food item. for whatever reason this is king in Canada. most sold item.
all dressed is #2.
smarties, different ???? the whole candy bars are different is mind blowing.
Poutine is awesome.
love Nanaimo bars and oh ya...go butter tarts.
glad you enjoyed it all
with Nanaimo bars, it's always better to have then chill in the fridge for an hour, partly because it keeps the chocolate top from melting quickly and some places have Nanaimo bars with different flavours ie chocolate peanut butter, or mint, one time I saw a 'pumpkin pie style'
We all have different preferences for poutine and butter tarts. Like, I much prefer plain poutine and it's the best when the gravy is super hot and the curds melt. I love my butter tarts plain, with raisins or with pecans...not picky there. Though I do like the insides to be a big runny or really soft.
The smarties in America are like the Rockets we get here they're usually given out at Halloween it's almost like a sugar coated Tums
Right
My favourite poutine is: French fries made with red-skinned potatoes cooked in beef tallow. peppercorn sauce, traditional cheese curds mixed with 2 years old chedar, Marinated eggplant, sauté mushrooms and braised beef éfiloché.
The best cheese curds squeek when you take a bite, that is total bliss.😋
We are familiar with the goodness of the squeak being from Minnesota which is next to Wisconsin where cheese curds are a big deal.
Welcome back. Thankyou for visiting Canada glad you had fun. As a home sick Canadian living abroad thanks.
Any relation to the late Rockabilly star, Ronnie Hawkins?
@@shoknifeman2mikado135 No
@@SchnuffiJames oh well
13:18 They rickrolled us... The restaurant rickrolled us. What madlads!
All dressed potato chips are like Dr Pepper they taste like a little bit of everything. :-) :-)
Id say they are more like the everything bagel of the chip world
Your Smarties are our Rockets. Wunderbar is caramel & peanut butter (and are epic when refrigerated). Butter tarts come in two forms, there's runny ones and solid ones (looks like you got a solid one) and there's a longstanding debate over which is better! In Ontario we actually have a butter tart festival. Glad you got to try stuff!
Ohhhhhhh you guys are fun to watch
Well thank you!
My favorite Canadian "Chocolate Bars" are Coffee Crisp, Aero, Skor, Crispy Crunch and Caramilk. Yum, yum! 😋
Glad you enjoyed the goodies. We did a trip from Alberta to Kentucky in August by motorcycle. I tried lots of different things, catfish, fried green tomatoes, okra, only drawback is everything was deep fried. Did not like biscuits and sausage gravy. If you're ever in the prairies try Saskatoon pie. Yum...✌🇨🇦
We’re not gonna talk about how we were Rick-Rolled during the poutine bit-
It makes me sooo happy you came back to get a memorial picture with "The Barge" washed ashore on Sunset Beach. Won't that look good framed on your fireplace mantle!!!
I’m probably a terrible canadian here but my favourite poutine has grated mozzarella cheese, not curds. It melts so much better than the curds, best poutine i ever had was at an esso in northwestern ontario.
It’s ok to like what you like. :)
Pouting is soooo good we love it super Canadian 👌 just gravy and cheese 🧀
Those candies you call Smarties in the States, we call Rockets. As a kid, when coming back from trick or treating, it was the first thing we'd give away
Same here with the smarties, although I never could find anyone who wanted them, so they would end up in the garbage
I love Rockets. Around Halloween, I buy them for myself.
@@jomc7425 Too bad you weren't around back then. You'd be very happy!😋 You'd have mine, my 3 siblings & all the kids I knew 😊
@@jomc7425 PS - Lucky you can still get them. I can't find one of my favourites anymore😟, they were called 'BB Bats'. Sort of like taffy on a stick.
@@jomc7425 my mom buys huge bulk bags from Superstore every year around Halloween. If I want to buy my mom a nice treat I get her WAYYY too many rockets lol.
Love your vids. Butter tarts come in different ways, plain (only the gooey, liquidy) or with raisins or whatever suits. If you end up near Toronto and have the time check out the Maids kitchen on Main street in Newmarket , just north of Toronto, for the worlds best butter tarts.
Thank you! And if we happen to be there, we're try to look for Maids Kitchen!
A real treat is dipping French Fries in mayo! Great reactions!
Or mayo and mustard mixed
My wife makes the best nanaimo bars and butter tarts I've ever tasted!
My husband is from Teaxas and lives in Ontario now....I can conform that yes the smarties and rockets are differently named.....from usa and canada
My mom worked at Hershey Canada for 22 years in Smith’s Falls ON Canada before it closed. And Eat-More bars are made from the leftovers from the bottom of barrels of the different chocolate bars they made mixed together. Sorry all you Eat-More fans if you didn’t want to know that. Lol
Didn't they have cherries in them?
you guys are so cute! love watching you enjoy food together ❤️
Wunderbar has always been my favorite chocolate bar. Never liked Ketchup chips either, but I do like All Dressed. Nanaimo bars are so good but so sweet. my mum makes a modified version of the Nanaimo bar, where she uses unsweetened chocolate in a thin layer ontop instead of the milk/semi sweet. her butter tarts are also amazing! flaky pie crust with a gooey center. no raisins. no nuts. just buttery caramelly heaven 😍
Thank you for the kind words!
I've never had a Nanaimo bar, more of a Western Canadian thing, I think... either way, I hate coconut, so....
Lol when you said you wanted something sweet and said you were going to try a nanaimo bar all I could think was "you're going to get your wish"
The term all-dressed in an older term we use to use to order a pizza. If you want an all dressed pizza then you wanted all the toppings. Or the works
My mom used to work for Hersheys Canada and it’s my understanding Eat-More is made from the scraps after an Oh Henry production run
Them some good scraps . Haha I prefer the scraps
There has to be molasses in it. Traumatized for life.
As a Canadian I’m in love with the food I’ve grown up with but I would like to try American food as I’ve only been twice once to phoenix Arizona and once to Sam Diego!
San Diego**
Am I crazy or were they eating poutien to rick astley's never gonna give you up. Were we rick rolled?
Ha ha ... 3D level rickrolling!
Chocolate bars in Canada but not a single Coffee Crisp? That's sacrilege! 😆
So I dig ketchup chips but loathe ketchup.
Pretty sure we reviewed it in this old video: czcams.com/video/n44FGfarIHQ/video.html
If you try all-dressed chips you must try Ruffles..Cadbury chocolate is the best!😋😋
As a North Vancouverite I love Melissa's shirt!
I have never seen anyone buy or eat an Eat-More in person 🤣 I forget they exist until videos like this!
I love them ! More for me 😏
Hey born Canadian never heard of Sap Sucker, will be searching for it, maybe a West Coast thing!
It's a seltzer sweetened with Quebec maple syrup, hence the name
lays makes the best ketchup chips and ruffles all dressed are the best! Also every single miss vickie's flavour
I didn't look through all the comments but I believe butter tartes have a French background because tartes translated from French to English is pie, so they are kind of like a mini pie, a lot of them even come in their own mini pie plate.
The best Butter Tarts are Runny! Also you didn't try any of the best Canadian chocolate bars.. Coffee Crisp, Crispy crunch, etc.
Advert. Two old women talking. How do you like your coffee? crisp.crisp? Yes I like my Coffee-Crisp. ( bars are best described as dehydrated chocolate ice capps.
eat more is one of the best chocolate bars. also love coffee crisp.
Eat-more bars are the best :)
Come to Montreal, I will give you a few spots for poutine. In Quebec we are the master of the dish. Cheese curds are more a Quebec specialty so we put way much of it in out poutines.
Loved seeing you checking out our local haunts! As a middle-aged Vancouverite…
- Best chocolate bar ever: Wunderbar
- I did in fact trade Mr. Bigs for Wunderbars or Smarties at Halloween
- Eat-More: associate with older generation; tried once. Yuck
- Poutine: try original flavour; La Belle Patate is good but still too much cumin for my liking. Still looking for poutine like I loved in Quebec
- Butter tarts without raisins rule, especially ones that have a thick crust and are twice as deep as those ones
- Nanaimo bars: nice to enjoy a couple few times a year; so sweet, I must try with coffee next time
- Ketchup chips: i never buy them but will have a few if they are in a bowl at a party
- All Dressed: buy them a couple times a year
Thank you ... it was fun!
Where as I hated wunderbar and love eatmore.
the foods are mostly similar but there are absolutely going to be some gems. Canadian treasures you just can't get outside of the country.
Cheese Curds should never be "cold" they have to never see fridge in order to be at their best and i think the only place you will find that is really in Quebec, a great curds will be warm, not melt, it has to be squeeky and tasty!
You're absolutely right, curd cheese on a poutine should never melt, it can't be cold but it should still be nice and firm.
Eatmores are my favourite! It's aimed at adults actually, not kids. It's not that sweet - darker chocolate. It's high in protein and filling. Good for hikes. Love it.
Butter tarts vary, you can customize the ingredients how you like them. I like the ones with pecans the most. Also Tim Hortons sold a fabulous butter tart and might again (they tend to bring some foods in for limited time.)
You have to freeze the eat more bars. Whole different ball game!
I like the Eat More bars & they're nottoo sweet (Childhood memories). I really enjoy poutine as a junk food occasionally. The Nanaimo bars are good but too sweet for me. Butter tarts are always best when warmed up a bit. Innukshuks were only used in the far north artic as markers & when the Olympics were held in Vancouver they appropriated the innukshuks.
With the local pastries ie butter tarts and scones, one thing to try is Murchies teas, I'd suggest the samplers if you aren't sure, such as the Breakfast, then Royal Jubilee and for a nice evening tea/late afternoon the Russian Caravan
We have what you call Smarties as well in Canada but we call them rockets and they look exactly the same
First time watching your channel and can tell I'm going to enjoy it. Other things to enjoy from Canada, if they haven't already been mentioned, are things like Joe Louis or Ah Caramels, though you probably has similar substitutes in the US. There are numerous chocolate places too from Purdys to Laura Secord, Ganongs, Peace by Chocolate, and everything in between. And maple candies, maple butter, maple everything.
Thank you!
the smarties ( usa ) version is what we call rockets up here. soo good. I'm Canadian and didn't know about sap sucker. I definitely need to buy one.
Goooood pick on the Old Dutch ketchup, lol those are the best ones.
I don't particularly like ketchup on most things, I'll even take mayo+mustard in my hotdogs lol. And ketchup chips in general are usually very acidic. But Old Dutch chips have the perfect thickness and crunch for ketchup chips, and a moderate amount of flavour, in my humble opinion. Lol
You should try food from Canada’s Quebec province, we are great cooks! Lots of tradition.
If you ever get to Southern Ontario, or close to Toronto, try peameal bacon on a bun, either plain or dressed up with lettuce, tomato, Dijon mustard, etc. Please note that peameal bacon is NOT the same as Canadian Bacon which is an American product.
Thank you for the tip!
The Eat-More chocolate bar is meant to be eaten by grabbing a small amount of the toffee and sucking it slowly in class, until only the peanuts are left, then you'd ask the use the bathroom and chew on, swallow the peanuts! (Kept me from starving in school, for years!)
:D
The wunderbar is filled with crunchy peanut butter. Eatmore bars make excellent protein snacks if you are hiking.
Need to try Lay's Chips Ketchup! :)
I can't believe you only bought one of each stop being so delicate indulge you're on CZcams you should have tried sugar pie that's absolutely divine.
Your smarties are our rockets 😊
Best Canadian indulgence is from Newfoundland. Fries, dressing and gravy... like. Newfie poutine.... SOO good.Also,@real Halifax Donair
My husband makes home made eatmore bars my favorite
Nanaimo is just a 15 minute sea plane ride away :). You would love the Island.
I would highly recommend for them to go from Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay, despite the mess with BC Ferries currently. Such a stunning ride, the scenery is breathtaking.
In Granville Market if you had continued in the aisle you were at you would end up in the food court and there is a place there that sells really great schnitzel. Served on a bun with fried onions. Massively tasty treat.
That sounds good!
Personally I like Ruffles All Dressed chips and I don't like the Old Dutch ones but I like Old Dutch for Salt and Vinegar and Mexican Chilli .
Too bad you didn’t pick coffee crisp, crunchie, bridge mixture. They’re the best!
You need to try a Big Turk chocolate bar.
People either love them or hate them, but I love them. And make Smarties cookies.
Smarties Cookies sounds like a cool idea!! We actually did try the Big Turk in this video: czcams.com/video/n44FGfarIHQ/video.html
Love me an eat-more my mom got me into those as a kid and I love them. the wonderbar is fantastic and you need to try lays ketchup chips I find Old Dutch lack flavour for the ketchup chips and all dressed, I also LOVE POUTINE and a good poutine the cheese curds should squeek when you eat them GO HABS GO
Welcome to Canada
We call candy bars "chocolate bars". Ketchup chips are only in Canada. All dressed chips just means all chip favours in one. Eatmores was the go to as a kid because they are substantial & gave you more for your money. Original, traditional poutine is the best.
I am Canadian and have never heard of SapSuckers lol And as for Chips, Old Dutch is probably the least best brand to try lol
