    I have 2 Lychee seedlings that have survived the low being in the 30s for 2 weeks. They are much more cold hardy than I thought.

    Thanks for a really simple helpful video. A neighbour grows Kiwi fruit successfully here in Ireland so I was going to try Lychee - no idea what variety the seeds I have are - just fingers crossed they are from northern China as its colder than Florida here, though we don't generally get the temp much more than -2º C that often. So inside a polytunnel and keeping the tree trimmed down may work. Not too large and it could be covered in fleece in really cold weather.

    Thanks for your videos! I'm really enjoing to watch here from South of brazil, where is a subtropical/ temperate weather zone. In my property i'm trying to adaptate some tropical species and if its possible there in EUA, i think i'm going be able to do it here.

    Hi there just saw this and got inspired. For a small tree. You could use that black foam insulation they put on pipes. To prevent them from freezing.

    some white bug is eating the lychee leaves. what type of pesticides do I use?

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  Před 6 lety +3

      I don't use pesticides. Sri Lankan weevils love lychee leaves. They are about the size of a lady bug and are a grayish white color. Their larval state is in the ground, so they are difficult to eradicate. Many people go out at night and pick them off their trees. Even our young lychee trees are fairly old, so the weevil doesn't cause major damage to them.

      It would be difficult to recommend one best fertilizer. It's important that nitrogen be slow release. Lychee trees benefit from lots of organic matter.

    Hi, 2 months ago i got a lot of blooming seeds. However we are now in mid August and I am worrying about the cold spell winter coming in a few months. Those seeds have bloomed outside in the ground. Should i digue them out and bring them inside the house. However by doint that i am sure that will kill them for good since i ll water them to much or not enough. Please help.

    • @TrulyTropical
      @TrulyTropical  Před 5 lety

      Seedlings are more sensitive to cold than larger trees are. If you get freezing temperatures, those seedlings will need to be protected.

      We have been having trouble with lychee bloom for several years. Cold weather is good for lychee bloom. Not watering lychees from October to February also helps. Some people have had success by girdling their trees.

      Try adding two bags of ice near the trunk for 3 straight nights around mid december - mid january when a cold front is dropping temps down to the 40-50s for those nights and if it works you should see new growth (with flowers) about a month later

    I live in Memphis, Tennessee, would that be too far north to grow them? Our winters are mild, usually no less than 20•F.. Summers are evil,temps at 100+ ,100% humidity

    • @BManStan1991
      @BManStan1991 Před 7 měsíci

      If you get down to 20F that's pushing it. About 4 degrees lower than Lychee likes. You could do very well with a loquat however. Loquats come from colder parts of China and are also very delicious.
      Combine this with a seabreeze bamboo (a clumping tropical style bamboo that grows in a circle. It will only ever get about 10 to 15 ft wide), and you have yourself a little tropical paradise in Memphis 👍
      Edit: I should also mention that seabreeze bamboo is one of the few tropical bamboos that can handle temps down to 20F. Some even say it can handle down to 18F. I think graceful bamboo can also handle low 20s/high teens. Do some research. Of course all this is assuming you even want a tropical bamboo or want a tropical look at all. Lol
