  • @hgdon-homeiswheretreesare-9239

    Yeah, lychee and Logan are tropical fruits, but you can grow them in central Florida (although it’s not tropical area). You can grow mango and coconut in the none tropical area like central Florida, but you have to take care of them very well.

      I had a friend from Malaysia who said that Malaysia is too hot for lychees so apparently, lychees prefer subtropical weather. They don't mind the summer heat in Florida but need minimum chill hours to initiate flowering, I think.

      This is great news to hear. I have property in Central FL zone 9B/10A. We sometimes rarely will get down to the mid 20s F in winter and that had discouraged me from planting my beloved Lychees. Do you really think they can do well here?

    Coming from Hawaii check it out I’ll give you all a tip, plant the lychee in good dirt, fertile 2 times with only nitrogen chicken manure. When you see pinky size nail fruit starting cut all nitrogen out and hit with k mag, you will have the biggest lychee ever, each of my trees produce 1000 plus pounds and they are only 12 feet high.

      It is Florida, our soils don’t hold moisture, at least not in my area. I have customers who “water as needed”. I find this very problematic and try to dissuade this practice. A good irrigation system and rain shutoff are the best tools to have. Thanks for the videos, you have a neat place. Thanks for the video! 2 years ago I planted a small Mauritius lychee tree next to my house. It grew well and become 8 ft tall, but didn’t flower yet. Recently I learned that it would grow really tall and decided to transplant it into a different spot, away from the house. I watered it regularly, but all of the leaves dried up and turned brown. Do you think it’s dead, or there is still hope for it to recover? You mentioned some of your trees recovered. How long did it take? I might be watering a dead stick. Thanks!

    • @SulcataGrove
      @SulcataGrove  Před 2 lety

      @@SulcataGrove thanks for taking time to reply, I really appreciate your help. I was going to pull the tree out, because it looks dead, but then I scratched the bark and it’s still green underneath, so there’s still hope. I give it at least 5 buckets of rain water every day after the sunset. Hopefully it will make it. It’s been really dry here in Palm Harbor with scorching sun. Did lychee lem affect your trees?

    • @SulcataGrove
      @SulcataGrove  Před 2 lety

      We haven’t had any mites on our trees. We did buy some trees from a whole seller years ago that had the mite. We destroyed the trees. With so many not treating their infected trees, and the more possibly being carried by birds and bees, I’m not sure if we can continue to dodge it. We plan to start preventatively fogging with soluble sulphur.

    As a Brit I found the pronunciation of lychee very curious. Here in the UK it is pronounced liechee whereas the narrator sounded it as lee-chee. Interesting video nevertheless.

      @@SulcataGrove I know, I love them - have you tried mangosteens ? I agree about the pronunciation, Ieechee sounds somewhat off-putting with connotations of the parasite. Good luck with this year's crop. Sadly where I live there is no prospect of growing a lychee tree as the temperature at times is a little too unkind.
