"Infamy! Infamy! They've all got it in for me!" How can any Top Ten not include at least one entry from the "Carry On" franchise? I must nominate "Carry on Cleo" for what is unversally recognised as the worst pun in cinematic history.
Not only any top ten - but 'Top 10 _British_ _Comedy_ Films'. To miss out on all of the many, many Carry On films is pretty much heresy. Cringe-worthy (i.e. early British) comedy, ludicrous yet somehow topical plots, loads of puns, lashes of innuendo and an absolutely iconic set of actors from the day.
The only thought needed to put one of these on the list is to pick one; that's pretty hard - although I do agree that without watching them all again, "Carry on Cleo" is a firm contender.
I'm guessing it's a typical MojoMumboJumbo list; probably sourced from somewhere else with little understanding of what it actually means. After all, nobody would expect them to research or have knowledge of _all_ British comedy films. There's simply too many great ones.
"Withnail & I" certainly seems to divide opinions. Even from the little bits I've seen I know it's just not for me. It's a Marmite of a film. IMDB - 7.5. 'Nuff said.
The Carry On films haven’t aged well. They aren’t as timeless as the films in this list, they’re very dated. I used to love them but find them a bit cringy now.
@@shelleyjackson8793 not everything on this list has aged well
I never did find" withnail and I" that funny in first place and I probably would of had "life of Brian" for the python pick
Second Time you've shocked me! Didn't think much of The Who and now Withnal and I. Still hilarious on rewatching i! Infamy infamy", once heard Never Forgotten. Yes carry ons- Cleo, or 2 other greats. Would change the order of list, but pretty good.
Right? Camping is even in the intro but not on the list! They might not have aged well but as a part of British culture…come on.
Ealing Comedies definitely worth watching at least once - Whisky Galore! (1949), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), Possibly Passport to Pimlico but that might be a bit too British also (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob and as already mentioned The Man in The White Suit both (1951), The Ladykillers obviously on Mojo top 10 list (1955) - also worth considering two Ealing none comedy films - Went The Day Well? (1942) and Dead of Night (1945)
Dead of Night is one of the best horrors of all time.
You forgot 'The Titfield Thunderbolt' which is my favourite of the lot.
Withnail & I is in the correct spot. It just has an extremely British sensibility. It was very relatable in terms of the squalid living conditions, hedonism of being a student in the 80s/90s.
Gregory’s Girl should be on that list.
On a similar note I'd add the lesser known 'Restless Natives' which is a cult film. It's another Scottish made around the same time with a similar feel, plus a banging soundtrack by Big Country.
Withnail and I is an absolute cult classic. It may be a bit too British for your sensibilities though, which is understandable. I have watched it at least once a year for the past 25 years and it never gets old.
Hear Hare Here
A disgrace no Carry On Film shown, surely you can’t get more British than those cheeky humour films!
Agreed
Hard to choose just on though :) same with Python.
There isn't a wedding going on at the same time as a funeral in Four Weddings although the funeral does follow on from one of them. The funeral has one of the most beautiful scenes in film with John Hannah's reading of W H Auden's Funeral Blues. Very much worth watching.
Yes. John Hanna reciting Auden's poem at the funeral is a wonderful part in " Four weddings.." but it's hilariously funny too. I loved that film.
"I called it The Camberwell Carrot because it looks like a Carrot and I rolled it in Camberwell"
The Man in the White Suit 1951 Stars Alec Guinness , Joan Greenwood , Cecil Parker.
I was just going to say the same 😊
Ps. Have you seen 'This is Spinal Tap'? It's a satire on a rock band. Definitely worth a view. His amp went up to 11....
I've seen the reference to amps turned up to 11 on lots of music reviews but they never reference the source
Some real amps now go up to twelve. 😁
Yes I agree, and who can forget Nigel singing that melodic and soulful song,
" Lick My Love Pump"
Just beautiful 😥
I agree it's a great film but... it's not British. :)
I bought a second hand amp where they’d customised the dial to go to 11 as tribute to this
Withnail & I is amazing. Also agree on those calling for Four Lions. It's Chris Morris so standard brilliance
Four lions is a national treasure that movie is absolute quality
yeah, Four Lions is sublime. Better than most of this list.
@@markopolo1271 rubber dinngy rapids bro
Four Lions is a fantastic comedy, deserves to be on this list
Withnail and I, every time. Not done the drinking game mind.
Paul McGann said he wouldn't go near it. Drink tea, he said.
Withnail And I is a strange one. Lots of people hate it first time round. Then they enjoy it the second time. Then they adore it the third time. Then they're quoting it on the fourth time. Then it's within your soul by the fifth. 😉
I enjoyed it much more second time round too. Often happens to me with comedies that end up as favourites: Spinal Tap, King of Comedy for example
Are you the farmer??
@@delthorpe223 I’ve just made the connection between De Niro in The King of Comedy and then De Niro being the chat show host in Joker who is another character who dreams of being a stand up comedian but is severely lacking in the talent area. I’m probably the very last person to make the connection, even though they are very different films.
Oh, and also “GET IN THE BACK OF THE VAN!”
They missed out The Italian Job (original, obviously) and The Life Of Brian.
Italian Job isn't a comedy though
@@jay-rk1ve the original with Michael Caine is most definitely a comedy. I can't comment on the, apparently, dreadful American remake but the original 60's film is hilarious.
I feel like Four Lions deserved a place in the list, at least as an honourable mention. Endlessly quotable with seething satire.
Four Lions is def up there with some of my fave films about inbreds. 😅
I keep meaning to watch this, so now I will!
What crap are you talking about. The reason it's not in the list is the reason it bombed at the box office. It was crap and just mildly amusing. But I take it you just like it for the anti white racism in it.
Rubber dinghy rapids, bro!
I think four lions got snubbed because it asked the forbidden question...
...is a wookiee a bear?
Withnail and I is probably my favorite.
Not only do you need to watch "Kind Hearts and Coronets" but also most of the other Ealing comedies. I discovered them in my twenties but back then I had to rely on tracking down VHS copies. Luckily I lived in London at the time so it wasn't too hard. Then when I moved back to my small Scottish hometown ten years later I found quite a few of them in the local library, free to rent. I'd lost the video tapes in a house fire so was very happy to rewatch and fall in love with them once again.
Check them out online, you won't regret it!
Edited to say that I am immensely glad to finally come across someone else who doesn't care for Withnail - I thought I was alone in not getting it.
I’m not a fan of Withnail and I either, I do agree about Ealing comedies though.
Snap!!
Hi so S choice is another great film, old but good, can be found on utube.
That should have read as ‘Hobsons Choice’, greatfilm
Clockwise, another John Cleese comedy, is one of my favourite films. Very British and very funny.
Yep, Cleese on top form! :)
'Nuns on the Run' with Eric Idle and Robbie Coltraine is fun too.
The Death of Stalin should be up there. Perhaps it’s too new.
Wthnail and I is brilliant but then I love Richard E Grant to bits.
I’m so surprised you couldn’t get into Withnail (pronounced With-nall) And I. I introduced my 32 year son to it last year and he loved it. I think it appeals to the British sense of humour and it totally deserves to be number 2 on the list.
Yeah, don’t think JJ is British enough.
Withnail & I is a cult classic. It takes a certain frame of mind to appreciate it. It is particularly British.
Withnail and I IS difficult at first. But it is genius - nearly everyone adores it after a watch or too!
You should have a look at the Carry on films.. I cant choose a favourite, their all funny! Well worth a look!! 😊
It's possible that Withnail and I is too esoterically English for most Americans to truely appreciate. But to most Brits of a certain age, it is unquestionably a masterpiece of British cinema and comedy.
Thirty seven years after it's release it is still widely quoted.
h, he's American, he doesn't get it the poor love.
Withnail is a tragi-comedy really: it's very British in its sense of gloom as humour. I've also always thought it's more like a play than a film, with the way it uses words and dialogue. The way Bruce Robinson put those words together, though, is utter genius. It's one of those films that every time I watch it - and I've seen it many times - I notice something new and different. I love it so, so much. In fact I love all of the films on this list. Holy Grail definitely number 1.
Withnail and i has an amazing scene towards the end when they get high in the living room, theres chanting and hysterical laughing and paranoia, its perfect 😂
Four Lions should have been on this list
My favourite British comedy of all time
Chris Morris is an under rated comedy genius.
Imo it's one of the single greatest British comedy's ever made it's just great
Rubber Dinghy Rapids!
Waj.....they're chickens!
@@DoctorAkikoFukuwara the fked up rabbits with no ears
If you like Through The Loop, definitely check out The Thick Of It. It's the TV show Malcolm Tucker came from, alongside most of the cast.
don't loose faith..I know people who watch it at least once a month...I try to watch Withnail at least bi-annually. Withnail always a top 3 for me

Sightseers is one of my top faves, about a couple who go travelling in their caravan and the antics they get up to
I feel it’s a disservice that not a single Norman wisdom movie made the list when he basically was British comedy in the 40s and 50s
Another amazing UK Comedy you might love... Sightseers. Two people go on holiday in a caravan and start a killing spree. Twisted magic. The writers and stars were both in the Cornetto Trilogy.
Withnail & I isn't a movie, it's poetry.
_"We live in a kingdom of reigns, where royalty comes in gangs, We live in a land of weather forecasts and breakfasts that set in, Shat on by Tories, shovelled up by labour"_ - Uncle Monty.
Never rolled with it myself. Happy you enjoyed it.
I didn’t really get Withnail & I the first time I saw it as a teenager, but it really hit me the second time. I love it more with every rewatch, it’s one of my favourite films!
capaldi has acc said that the thick of it probably wouldn’t ever return because of how real it feels at the moment
Alec Guinness decided to take 2¼% of gross instead of a fee to play Obi Wan in Star Wars, people thought him crazy, in the end he made over £150,000,000!
It was actually about $3m initially and $75m in the long run. That's about £60m, so you're only £90m+ out! :)
In the loop is a masterpiece, Peter Capaldi is a genius
My 11 year old now says ‘tis but a scratch!’ When he gets hurt or anyone around him after showing him Monty python 😂😂 love our English humour
Withnail is my favourite all time film. I never grow tired of watching it.
Withnail & I is my favourite ever film. I never tire of it. Give another go, it’s wonderful.
Withnail and I is incredible. Give it another go!
I would have chosen Death at a Funeral over Four Weddings
Rita, Sue & Bob too should have been on that list. Hilarious, and refreshingly without any tedious moral compass. _"Im tekkin' you pon' moors..."_
Also, not a film as such, but the TV film Abigails Party which is a filmed version of the play from 1977 is also great, the sublime Alison Steadman is wonderful as the awful but sexy Beverly 😁
Kind Hearts and Coronets and other Ealing studios movies were genius. I would recommend watching them. Maybe I'm being unfair but I refuse to watch the remake of The Ladykillers.
With the Cornetto trilogy my favourite is Hot Fuzz, I know the area it was filmed in well, a beautiful place.
I think I watched the remake of Ladykillers once, purely out of curiosity coupled with the presumption that Tom Hanks wouldn’t be in it if it were THAT awful. It was indeed terrible, mainly because it didn’t feel as if it had the natural character of the original (though I’m not above admitting that the original feels like sublime perfection, so I’m not sure that any remake would ever come close).
In general though, the Ealing Comedies are in a class of their own…in my humble opinion…for what it’s worth.
@@lynnejamieson2063you are so right they are perfection
The remake is okay, but not a patch on the original.
"Look at him!. Look at Jeff Wode!, His head must weigh fifty pounds on its own."
As a fan and appreciator of Edgar Wright. You owe it to yourself to watch "Spaced". In my mind possibly the cleverest and best sit com ever.
I love Spaced. I still have it on DVD
@@HollyLyne Me too. Gets re watched often.
Kind hearts and coronets: spoiler alert - they weren't all bumped off,.one died of a heart attack, and the admiral went down with his ship..
Its 4 weddings and a funeral. Kind Harets is fantastic, iv seen the stage play. Passport to Pimblico is also a Ealying studio dream, you can not go wrong with any of there films.
Pimlico?
Love Passport to Pimlico, being from Pimlico myself it's close to my heart. Fun fact, it was all filmed in Lambeth!
@@bsmith6646 I've often wished i could fall down a hole and find stuff. I think I'd go for the gold though
@@bsmith6646Passport to Pimlico is funny and I recognised some parts of Lambeth in the film too.
I am surprised that Brassed Off wasnt on the list nor any Margaret Rutherford films because she could be funny too.
A LOT of blockbuster Hollywood movies were filmed in the UK, more than you might imagine. John Bluthal as the blind accordion player with his chimp. "do you have a licence for this minky?"
Broadway musical, Gentlemens Guide to Love & Murder was based on Kind Hearts & Coronets.
Mouse on the moon and the mouse that roared should be worth a watch, definitely films to watch on a rainy afternoon cuddled up on the couch with beverage of choice and snacks.
Never make a British comedy remake !!!
You must get hold of 'King Hearts and Coronets'. It is superbly written and acted. The dialogue is extremely witty and amusing. It is one of my favourite films. The American copy of the film had to be re-shot because the British ending was considered too shocking for American audiences. The original 'Ladykillers' is vastly superior to the remake. Also well worth a watch.
The Lady Killers is such a classic. love it, the original.
I feel like Americans like Monty python more then the English do, like I don’t think I have spoken too a single person who says Monty python is in there top 5 let alone number 1. Also regardless of aging, at least one carry on film should have been on here.
I agree. I find Python about as funny as stage 4 pancreatic cancer.
Withnail and I is an incredible film! It could just be TOO British for you. :) Richard E Grant is spectacular in it. Yes, he's theatrical. Quite deliberately so. He's a failing actor, full of self-importance and grandiose visions of the theatrical triumphs, that his spectacular talent deserves, all fueled by drink and drugs.. His Shakespearean monologue at the end is absolutely tragic, as you realise he really does have the talent but he's thrown it all away. A wonderful dark comedy, it won awards by the bucketload and has influenced filmakers all over the World! :)
I'm a trained actor reduced to the status of a bum! 🤣😂
I highly recommend "A fist full of travellers cheques."
Dennis Price is particularly good in The Naked Truth - as well he plays a blackmailer. Good cast with Peter Sellers, Terry Thomas, Peggy Mount and Joan Sims.
I love it when JJ talks about his life and stuff/projects he’s done, so interesting…love it!
I need to change my name on here looks like I was born in 1935….was the 80’s promise 😝
One of my favourite us comedies with Cary Grant (from UK originally) is Arsenic and Old Lace. OMG so funny.
A favourite British comedy of mine is Mickey Blue Eyes - I can watch it again and again - with Hugh Grant.
There’s “made IN Britain” and “made BY Britain”. The picture quality is normally different and a telltale sign
The funniest thing in The Lady Killers is what happens to the gang. Definitely worth seeing. There's an amazing scene in In The Loop, where Peter Capaldi and James Gandalfini go head to head yelling at each other. 😁
Withnail & I is a British Black Comedy. It's subtle and well crafted. Therefore, not suited for the majority US market which just wants big bangs and belly laughs and a puerile story-line.
I love Withnail and I, it's a brilliant movie. BTw 'Withnail' is pronounced With- nil
If you haven't already, you should check out 'Alan B'stard' (Starring Rick Mayall # RIP). It's a classic, and so worth watching.
John, I saw a French plane wearing a beret, trailing garlic bulbs, and of course I thought of you...

😀
Have you watched THE GREEN MAN starring Alastair Sim? That’s a great British comedy (1956).
Kind Hearts and Coronets has a strong case for being one of the wittiest and sharply written English language movies ever. A young Alec Guinness delivers arguably a career best performance (or performances) - his the tedious church tour given by the "boring clergyman" member of the A'Ascoyne family provided a murder motive all on its own. Definitely check it out. Be prepared for a movie that it overdue for a restoration though, and an ending that sadly had to fit with the views of the censors at that time.
Do watch the original `Ladykillers` ,especially now that you are getting to grips with British culture. Of course ,it is that of Britain some time after WW2.
Now my son actually prefers the re-make but I'm content with Professor Marcus and his String Quartet
"Here hare here" "We've come on holiday by mistake" "Fork it" My partner and I love Withnail and I. :D
Four weddings is iconic
Shock! Your not impressed by Withnal and I ? (&previously The Who) The line "we've come on holiday by mistake", plus classic lines & scenarios made it infinitely rewatchable over the years.
“Kind Hearts and Coronets” (1949) is the basis for the Broadway musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder”
It would be nice if WatchMojo didn't talk over half the dialogue. They're full of their own self importance.
Yes! Kind Hearts and Coronets is great! I actually didn't realise it was quite that old.
Four Lions should've been on here and if you want two underrated honourable mentions: Waking Ned and Saving Grace
So many films are made in the UK because we have 360 days of sunshine 🌞
The Sun is always shining in Britain.
It's just that it's covered by clouds.
I didn't get Withnail & I on first viewing either. It was only on a second or third viewing that its sublime brilliance revealed itself. I'm another one who would recommend both Four Lions and The Death of Stalin if you enjoyed In the Loop.
I love all the Ealing comedies, but if I had to pick just one it would be The Ladykillers.
Although not films, Mike Leigh's early tv work is fantastic! Largely improvised by the cast, the tv play 'Abigail's Party' and tv comedy drama, 'Nuts in May' are both absolutely hilarious and have become cult classics! They're VERY British though, so be warned. The target audience was very much domestic. They're black comedies, so are almost painful to watch at times but beautifully so. They're also social satires. Just take my word for it, they're absolute classics and eminently quotable! :)
I haven't read all the comments below but another brilliant film is the 1951 version of The Importance of Being Earnest. Stella cast including Joan Greenwood (also in the excellent Kind Hearts and Coronets) who has the most glorious voice.
Try Withnail again.
Have a Camberwell Carrot and chill, then try watching Witnail again😂😂😂 one of my favourite films , along with -
The Hound of the Baskerville staring Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.
What! You don't like 'Withnail & I' ??? I'm never watching JJLA ever again... (only joking!) 😜
I used to avoid old black and white movies like the plague, but when home sick pre-streaming I ended up watching Kind Hearts and Coronets. It was such a great surprise and forced me to rethink my whole attitude to older movies.
Withnail is an odd bird I love it and think is up there with Brian & Holy Grail but my wife and many friends hate it. I'm sure someone else has said it's one of those comedies that needs to be seen a couple of times to get into the rhythm of the less obvious gags, which it is stuffed with. Certainly for anyone of my age (60) who was an undergraduate in the 1980s then scenes like the 'Kitchen' are funny because we lived in little more than slum flats and bedsits when at university. The other beauty of Withnail is how quotable it is, god knows how many times I've heard a student demanding 'the finest of wines' or back in the day friends misquoting Danny the dealer when rolling a 'Sunderland' rather than a Camberwell Carrot!'
I also have to say I'm surprised Whiskey Galore (the original though the remake is pretty good) did not make the list because I'd put it the top five.
No one's mentioned the mouse films yet. I loved The mouse that roared, if you can dig it out is well worth a watch, if only to understand how the smallest country in Europe ( Grand Fenwick) could defeat the world's strongest superpower...... Peter Sellers classic of the late 1950s.
Watch Withnail and I again. Next time, have a few drinks, roll a couple up and watch with a couple of good mates.
You should watch the series The Thick of It which it what In The Loop came from. Also, the same writers, or at least Armando Ianucci, was responsible for Veep and I think it shows massively. It’s basically The Thick of It on a grander scale.
Kinds Hearts and Coronets, must be watched, (pronto by you.) Exquisitely subtle.
So you just casually drop in "Oh yeah, I was in a film with Kevin Kline once" like it was nothing, then? 😺
This is an extremely tame list. Nothing anyone over the age of 12 would laugh at really. Excusing Withnail & I as being far too complex for children. Expected to see the likes of Borat or Four Lions to be here.
The screenplay for Withnail and I should be taught in schools as a classic in English literature. The Pink Panther Strikes Again is better than Return. Life of Brian better than Holy Grail.
No love for the surreal 'Time Bandits'?
JJ, I'm sad you havent seen 4 Weddings. Please do so ASAP and tell us what you think!
Other Ealing comedies are Passport to Pimlico and The Lavender Hill mob. I think With Nail and I is very dark and it looks at the 70s 80s experience of being a near alcoholic penniless student .. 😂
WTF !! NO CARRY ON MOVIES ? Yeah , Watchmojo SUCKS 😂😂😂😂 Not one of the 32 Carry on Movies made it to their Top 10 . These Movies were the epitome of British humour .
They should have done some honourable mentions since there's too many to include in a top 10 list. Kind of surprised none of the Guy Richie films weren't mentioned (just done night shift so my mind isn't firing on all cylinders and completely forget the names of the films) but they are great. Personally I prefer Life Of Brian over Holy Grail but they are both brilliant.
Concerning The Pink Panther series of films, I prefer the earlier "A Shot in the Dark".
The first scene of Four Weddings and a Funeral is great. I won't give a spoiler.
Kind Hearts and Coronets is fantastic, but a lot of the Ealing Comedies are fantastic. The Ladykillers, Passport to Pimlico, The Titfield Thunderbolt etc.
I prefer the Life of Brian to Holy Grail.
This list is missing The Death of Stalin, which is a fantastic film. But given the French involvement in its production, perhaps that doesn't count?
I would say The Full Monty is way ahead of the others on this list.
