You need to see Fish called Wanda, it has Monty Python heritage, its very good.
Life of Brian was the most profitable Monty Python movie. The church was so vocally opposed to the movie that the producers didn't have to spend any money on advertising.

Just to make the song a little bittersweet to you: When Graham Chapman died in 1989 (at the way too young age of 48), his funeral concluded with everyone singing "Always Look At The Bright Side Of Life".
Quite a funeral, John Cleese gave a oration and included 'I'd just like to be the first person to ever say Fxxx at a funeral service.'
his headstone reads... "Here lies a very naughty boy"
I just find it funny that literally EVERYONE knows this Song (or some variant of it)
At the reunion performance "Graham Chapman" appeared on stage in an urn. At one point they spilled him all over everybody. The show ends with a performance of "Always Look..." and there's one part where the camera cuts to a CU of each of them singing in turn. The shot of Graham was the urn with someone puppeting the lid to look like a mouth singing.

Palin's face during the Biggus Dickus scene always gets me. He just has that "Im in complete control and there's nothing you can do about it" glint in his eye

That's not true.
The the guards were not extras they were well-known respected comic actors.
The 4 actors playing the guards played 12 different roles in the movie.
One of them was part of the writing team.
No one was threatened with not being paid or being sacked for laughing in scene 13, the guards laughing at the right time was important to the story as it was how Brian escaped.
Fun Fact:- The guy in the crowd who was left alone then walked off set when they all ran after Brian. That was Spike Milligan who wrote and starred in the Goon Show, a long running radio comedy. That was the show that was the main influence for the Monty Python guys. He was also in The Holy Grail. He was the guy in the witch burning scene with shaving foam on his face.
The epitaph on Spike Milligan's gravestone is "I told you i was ill"...

Yep. They never planned for him to be in the film. But he was coincidentally visiting Morocco while they were filming, and when they found out, they wrote him a part on the spot.
You have to check out the video of Spike Milligan being given a lifetime achievement award, where he receives a message from Prince Charles (now King Charles III) - I'm not going to give any spoilers but it's an absolute classic in its own right.
One of my favourite stories about British Humour is that when HMS Sheffield was sunk in 1982 and her crew had to abandon ship into the South Atlantic they reportedly passed the time waiting to be rescued by singing "Always look on the bright side of life" with extra emphasis on the "worse things happen at sea you know" line.
I also _adore_ that "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" has become a very popular song in Britain _at funerals..._ 🥹

England as a country doesn’t technically have a national anthem. Always look on the bright side of life is looked upon by some as an unofficial national anthem of England. We tend to default to “God save the King”, however thats the British National anthem, but we also have “They’ll always an England”, “Jerusalem” and “Land of Hope and Glory” to name a few!

The best line in the movie was inexplicably omitted. Brian tells the crowd of mindless followers that they are all different. Without a hint of being aware of the irony they all chant, in unison, "Yes, we are all different! " And one lone voice squeaks out, "I'm not". That is the best example of irony that I've ever found. The person was to be paid as an extra, but his improvised line was so loved by the crew that they kept the line and bumped up his pay to that of a speaking actor. It truly was a brilliant, unscripted, line. Damn smart. 😋
Irony: The expression of one's meaning through language that usually conveys the opposite meaning. Crowd chanting in robotic unison: Yes! We're all different. (And by chanting in unison show that they are all exactly the same). A meek voice: I'm not. (And with two words that voice unintentionally proved that he was a rebel because he wanted to be just like everyone else). Simply ... awesome. 😋
In high school, my Latin teacher used the "Romans Go Home" scene to teach about proper conjugations and such. First time I ever watched Life of Brian! Funniest thing ever to me as a Freshman!
The best part about that scene is John Cleese was an actual Latin teacher.
@red-stapler574 Between this and his character as a teacher in Meaning of Life, I don't think it's acting but more channeling his past self.
You can always tell people who studied latin and people who haven't when they react to Life of Brian:
People who haven't studied Latin: "Oh my god I wasn't expecting a grammar lesson, this is funny."
People who have studied Latin: *Literally dying* "NO BRIAN ITS THE ACCUSATIVE!!!"
I was also introduced to this in a high school Latin class.
I was an honors Latin student in High School when I first saw this movie. It made it all the more funny.
My favorite line has to be:
"Your all individuals!"
"yes, we're all individuals! "
" I'm not" 😂
This one guy is a Paradoxon in itself by proclaiming himself as the only one not to be an individual, which makes him the most individual of all the people there xD

It gets even better, considering he ad-libbed that line. The Pythons like it enough that he was promoted from an extra and gave him a pay raise.
A bit like in Megamind when Titan says, "there is no Easter bunny, there is no Santa Claus and there is no Queen of England". There is no such title. Elizabeth II was never queen of England. Thus the joke, paradoxically, is true but most people don't think of it that way, which for those of us who know there is (or was when she was alive) no title of Queen of England, makes it even funnier. People still laughed but for the wrong reason.
There's also a movie called "And now for something completely Different" which is just a compilation of the best sketches from the tv show. Its a good way to get an overview of tv show without having watch them all, definitely worth seeing.

_How to Irritate People_ is another excellent offering. It's not technically Monty Python, though many of the future Python members were in it. The "Airline Pilots" sketch from this show is one of my favorite comedy sketches of all time.

Meaning of Life = A bunch of comedy skits tied together with an overarching theme.
Holy Grail = A bunch of comedy skits that come together to form a simple story/plot.
Life of Brian = A complete story/plot with a few comedy skits sprinkled in.
Meaning of life wasn’t quite as good in my opinion. Holy grail is obviously the one everyone loves, and it’s hilarious. But life of Brian is one of my favorites of all time
@@ryanhamstra49 While I still love "Brian" and its pointed skewering of religion, a lot of the jokes for me are a bit more obvious than the ones in "Grail." "The Meaning of Life," while not as good as the previous two, is still worthwhile.

Meaning of Life may not be as good as a movie, but each sketch on its own is among the best they ever did.
The actor portraying Jesus Christ in the first scene is Ken Colley, who played Darth Vader's military commander Admiral Piett in the Star Wars films The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

This movie got banned in Norway for being considered blasphemy.
After which Sweden marketed the movie as "So funny it got banned in Norway.".

It was also banned in many cities in the UK as well, so people arranged bus trips to go see it in cities it wasn't banned in 😅
Bus trips were arranged in Norway too. It gave swedish cinemas in reasonable distance from the norwegian-swedish border a helpfull extra income.
@@Songfugel It gets worse, one of those cities was Aberystwyth. And in 2008, Sue Jones-Davies became its mayor and arranged a public screening of Life of Brian for charity. The town got to watch her naked on the large film screen, because she was the actress playing Judith.

When each of the crucified yelled "I'M BRIAN", is a parody of the famous scene from Spartacus starring Kirk Douglas.
The “let us pray” guy who everyone ignored and then he just walked off was the legendary British comedian and writer Spike Milligan, whose work had initially inspired the Pythons to become performers. He was not even down to be in the movie but the film was being filmed in North Africa and Spike was coincidentally there on holiday visiting the places where he had fought as a soldier in world world 2 and he more or less bumped into them, so they wrote that scene in for him.. it’s one of the funniest scenes in the movie and beautifully played by Spike.

My family tree, way back in Roman times, includes someone with a name like "Commodus." Obviously, my first thought was, "OMG, that's like a name from The Life of Brian!" (the first name was similarly fitting but I don't remember it)
Not sure if it’s true but the rumor is the extras were told if they laughed that they wouldn’t get paid and so then Palin was doing his best to make them laugh on purpose.

Charles McKeown the first guard to laugh played 4 different roles in the film.
He is a respected comic actor.
Chris Langham the guard pulling the face, he played 2 roles in the film and is a well known actor, writer and producer, known for his work on Not The Nine O'clock News.
Andrew Maclachlen, the guard behind Brian on the right played 2 roles and was personal friends with John Cleese.
Bernard McKenna, the guard behind Brian on the left played 4 roles in the film and was part of the writing team, he's an absolute icon within British TV comedy, and has written many hours of British comedy shows.
He was personal friends with John Cleese and Michael Palin.
None of them were unprepared for scene 13.
One of my favorite jokes of all time that didn't make the video. "You're all Individuals" "We're All Individuals" Then one guy yells "I'm not".
Terence Bayler who played him ad-libbed that line and as another of his characters “I’m Brian & so’s my wife” (it’s mentioned in his obituary)
I agree, the best joke ever imo. I'm Dutch and I grew up with a typical British sense of humour, so that could be the reason.

This movie was very progressive in it's time. The actress who played Judith is really Welsh so being called a Welsh tart by Brian's mom made sense. She also became mayor of a town in Wales and when she found out her movie was still being "banned" she held film festival for it. The movie was not officially banned in the town but it was called "inappropriate" to be shown.
And the late Terry Jones, a historian by education, who played Brian's mum - and directed the movie - was Welsh. So calling the character Judith, played by a Welsh actress, a Welsh tart came from an actor who understood that heritage. The jokes are so meta, happily demolishing the fourth wall...

The big running joke throughout this movie that most people miss is that there was no such country as wales then, or Sweden for that matter and the girl with the gourd has a thick American accent. Where the hell did she come from?

Just an FYI if it wasnt for George Harrison of the Beatles, this movie would not exist. He pawned his house to pay for the production just because he wanted another python movie
Hard to spot but he is an extra in the film. Not to mention Spike Milligan, who just happened to be on holiday in Tunisia when they were filming and got roped in.
John Cleese was an actual latin professor in university for 2 years. That scene is a precise depiction on how a pain in the ass latin classes used to be in highschool in some europeans countries. So cleverly done.

In the 1970s I went to a very traditional grammar school, and this is exactly how our Latin master taught us. If you couldn't remember how to decline a noun or conjugate a verb, you'd get his large hairy knuckles pressed into your scalp. It wouldn't be allowed today, but we took it in good humour.
Not quite. He taught Latin (and other subjects) at his old school for a couple of years before going to Cambridge University to do a Law degree. Hilarious as it is, that scenes accuracy gives me the shudders remembering Latin lessons in school.
Oh it feels incredibly, weirdly authentic.
Fun fact: The actor playing the guy leading a prayer to nobody before sheepishly walking off is called Spike Milligan; who was a comedy hero to the five British members of Monty Python (Terry Gilliam was the lone American member). You have seen him before: He was in Mel Brooks' "History of the World Part I" as the crazy prisoner father of the girl in the French Revolution portion of the film.

Spike also had a role in the 1974 Three Musketeers, as the much older husband of Constance (Raquel Welch), the maid to Queen Anne that D'Artagnan (Michael York) fell for. He's taken to the prison to meet Cardinal Richelieu, where he agrees to become an informer.

Life of Brian is a masterpiece, a legendary milestone of humor, rightfully beloved around the world and still holding up even 45 years after its release. If you've never seen it, treat yourself, it's an absolute must-watch.
The prisoner hanging from the wall was Michael Palin, and if you think back to all the parts he's played you'll realize he's great too. He was the father of Swamp Castle, Sir Galahad, the head knight who says NI! and Dennis ("Help! Help! I'm being repressed!") Also the young priest who reads from the Book of Armaments.
In this movie, he's Pontious Pilate, the ex-leper, the "big nose" who punches another man's wife, and Nisus Wettus ("Crucifixion? Good. Out of the door, line on the left, one cross each.")
After the Python TV series, he starred in a Pythonesque adventure series called Ripping Yarns and has made several real-life travel shows for the BBC.
All have their moments in the sun and all are absolutely brilliant, but I always found Michael Palin and John Cleese the most versatile and arguably the best comedians in the troupe, with Eric Idle a close third.

When Graham Chapman (Brian and King Arthur in Holy Grail) died, Eric Idle sang "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life" during the memorial ceremony. Cleese recited part of a sketch from Flying Circus about a dead parrot.
Speaking of that sketch, Margaret Thatcher was tricked into reciting that sketch during a conference, which you can find on youtube, ending by saying some of the more famous Monty Python phrases "And now for something completely different". She had no clue and thought 'Monty Python' was a man who was a big supporter.

Found the clip (thank you!), and this is one of the comments below it that explains it in more detail: "That speech was written for her (standard for all politicians after Churchill) and she had no idea at all why it was funny. Her staff had to fight her to force her to give the speech as is, assuring her it would get a huge laugh. She relented only because she was alone in not getting the joke. Even after getting the laugh, she didn't get the joke. She watched the original sketch and didn't get the joke. Her comic talents are as dead as the sketch's parrot."
I loved that during Graham's funeral, John recounted that Graham once said to him, "Since you were the first person to say shit on television, you should be the first person to say fuck at a funeral".🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Christ (or should I say Brian?) the amount of giddy exception I had in wanting to see your reaction to... *_that_* scene... was immense, and only heightened each time you were like 'Oh butts? -- There's a lot of butts in this' because I knew! I knew what was around the corner and you delivered spectacularly!
I bet *"HE'S NOT THE MESSIAH, HE'S A VERY NAUGHTY BOY!"* has been added to your _quote all day/every day_ list, too.
The first R rated movie I ever saw, one of my favorites. Props and RIP to Beatle George Harrison for dropping some dough for it to even get made, just because he wanted to watch it.

...and that gamble paid off nicely. _Life of Brian_ was the fourth-highest-grossing film of that year and the highest-grossing British film in the US. 😏
'Always Look on the Bright Side of Life" touched a chord with the British trait of stoicism and the "stiff upper lip" in the face of disaster, and became immensely popular. When the destroyer HMS Sheffield was struck by an Exocet cruise missile on 4 May 1982 in the Falklands War, her crew sang it while waiting to be rescued from their sinking ship, as did the crew of HMS Coventry.

I love watching these LOB reactions for the spaceship scene. EVERYONE is SO confused! They were making a joke about Deus Ex Machina / The cavalry's coming lazy writing by having Brian be "saved" only to crash and end up at the same spot. Genius.
I hate that she didn't show the bit where, Brian having survived the spaceship crash, the bystander says "You lucky bastard".
Similar to the animator dying in Holy Grail, thus allowing the party to survive.

The extras were told "if you laugh or even smile, you don't get paid for this scene" hence why they try so hard to break the extras.
I swear 50% of this movie is the actors desperately trying not to laugh getting through their scenes. Also, you seem absolutely perfect for Monty Python's humor... I'm glad you shared your first time seeing this exceptionally dry british humor with the rest of us! This and Holy Grail have been absolutely hilarious to watch!
'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life' became a massive hit outside of this movie and has gone on to become a bit of British culture in it's own right.
It's been sung on the terraces of soccer stadiums during games.
Eric Idle performed it at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympics in London.
And probably most famously in 1982 during the Falklands War the Royal Navy ship HMS Sheffield was sunk. Whilst the crew that had survived were abandoning the ship on rafts they all started singing that song.
It's a song that's been sung at weddings, christenings, and funerals.
A true piece of modern British cultural heritage.
15:00 The sketch draws on Cleese's time as a teacher, between school and university. During this time he taught Latin and other subjects at a Preparatory school, St. Peter's in Weston-super-Mare,[8] mostly to children around ten years old. He recounts a time where he personally wrote out a word he had as a teacher misspelled, onto his blackboard a set number of times to demonstrate even-handedness, as an inspiration for the sketch.[9]
He has also expressed the view that the sketch must seem incomprehensible today, as its references to learning Latin grammar are no longer a common or normal experience, as they were for grammar school children of his generation.[10]
Oh man I love watching someone's first reaction to a Monty Python movie! And the grammar lesson is especially funny because John Cleese used to be a Latin teacher before getting into Monty Python! Also agree, this was the best Python movie.
As a Scandinavian, it is funny to mention that this film was marketed in Sweden with the words "So funny it was banned in Norway" (it was banned in Norway for religious reasons)
A lot of people see this film as sacrilegious, but I think it is more about how people destroy religion by adding their own ideologies through over-emphasizing and misinterpreting something of little significance that they are putting too much emphasis on. It shows that people will ruin anything by trying to gain self glory through believing that they are the one that has the answers, or dividing up into separate groups over simple differences.

I watched everything Monty Python in the 70's during high school. Loved it! Not too many young ladies appreciate, let alone get the humor. Your laugh truly sets you apart from the vast majority of your peers. Definitely marriage material.
Something that a lot of people miss are the digs at 1970s British trade unionism via the PFJ, with their endless meetings, squabbles, brotherly solidarity etc etc.

@@knoll9812 I'm sure they find the scenes funny but since most reactors are Americans in their twenties, it's referring to a time over twenty years prior to their birth in a different country.

Julius Caesar was not in the film. For some reason, "Hail Caesar" confuses people. It's Pontius Pilate. He was the governor of Judea and ordered Jesus' crucifixion. In the film, the kidnap plot revolves around Pilate's wife.

I was hired to write 600 questions for a Monty Python Trivia Pursuit Game (when AOL was still king) and this is some of the trivia, Graham had to wear a prosthetic penis when someone pointed out he wasn't circumcised. The man with the white beard is Spike Mulligan was in Tunisa to visit battle sites and up on the set unannounced. They asked him to be in it, and he did the scene where he walked off and walked right off the set. He was a massive inspiration to the group. When the ex-leaper (Michael Palen) walked away with the funny dance/walk his dance around the poo it was because an animal had just created it, When Michael Palin as Pontius Pilate addressed the soldiers daring them to laugh, he was truly daring them. The soldier extras were ordered to stand there and not laugh but were not told what Palin was going to do, they lost financing for the film as they were getting ready to leave for filming because the EMI feared the backlash, so Eric Idle flew to LA to ask George Harrison to give them the 3m to make the film, he put up his house and studio as collateral and formed Hand Made Films, at the end as the song is ending "Berney was their accountant.

Monty Python (the group) first got their start on the BBC TV network in England as a TV show called "Monty Python's Flying Circus" that did comedy sketches, something like SNL did in the US. Many of those sketches have become classics, and you'll want to check them out on CZcams on their "Monty Python" channel. Some of those sketches include "SPAM" (this sketch is the basis of the term used regarding Email!), "The Ministry of Silly Walks," "The Cheese Shop," "The Lumberjack Song," "Crunchy Frog," "The Dead Parrot" and although it's only about 30 seconds in length, it's absolutely my favorite, "The Fish Slapping Dance."
My favourite is "the man who is alternately rude and polite."

Life of Brian is definitely the best Python film. If you take into account when it was filmed, it's quite possibly the best comedy ever. Knowing pretty much the whole script off by heart, it's amazing to watch you hearing all the classic quoteable lines for the first time. The "where do I know this song" bit was joyous to watch too. Just a shame you couldn't just play the whole film end to end on here. If you love Python humour, you definitely ought to try watching a bit of modern British comedy. First place I'd start is the Cornetto trilogy.
This is my favorite Monty Python movie of all time. It works on every level: it works as a story, as satire, as social commentary, and as a damn good time. This really was when the Pythons were firing on all cylinders.
27:05 The "follow the shoe, follow the gourd" scene is my favorite scene in the movie because we get the history of every major religion and its heresies, punishments, and prejudices in just five minutes.
My personal favorite scene is the "What have the Romans ever done for us?" scene. It perfectly epitomises the "complainers" in life, is everything perfect? No. Are things better than they used to be? Yes. Having had my pipes freeze and break this past winter (circut breaker for the heat tape on the pipes blew in the middle of the night when it was -40F) it took 3 weeks to get them fixed. That will give one a true appreciation for indoor plumbing.
There's a modern reimagining of that scene with Patrick Stewart where the complainers are the British government and the European Convention on Human Rights takes the place of "the Romans". It's hilarious!

Did you recognize one of the most famous cameos in the movie? When Reg is taking to the crowd in the building, and then introduces the guy who owns the mount and you hear a funny sounding British "Hello." That was George Harrison. As in, from The Beatles. He actually provided the money for them to be able to produce this film.
Oh, and the TV show (Monty Python's Flying Circus) is hilarious. You will particularly like "The Lumberjack Song."
I have a Monty Python version of the card game Fluxx, and one of the rules that can be in play is that if you sing a song from Monty Python, you get to draw an extra card (two cards if no one has sung that particular song for that purpose before in that game).
As you note, this is the most "movie-like" of the Monty Python movies - as in, it has a proper, continuous story and plot. _Holy Grail_ had a story, but the plot was still a mostly disjointed series of skits, and for _Meaning of Life_ they returned to sketch comedy explicitly.
Several of the Monty Python troupe came back together for the excellent movie _A Fish Called Wanda,_ which I heartily recommend for a _big_ dose of John Cleese at his best.

When this first came out, a lot of religious people protested against it, because they thought it mocked Christianity and Jesus Christ (without seeing the movie themselves, or knowing anyone who did, but going off of what somebody who hadn't seen the movie told them). My brother and I went to the theater, and there was a group of people marching in front with protest signs. My brother and I found them comical. They didn't convince anyone to not go in to see the movie.
Well, they were right, it did, and that was a big big factor in a lot of us going to see it 🤣
Fun fact, this movie was entirely produced by George Harrison simply because he was a massive Python fan and was desperate to see another film by them! He called it “the world’s most expensive movie ticket.” He actually makes a blink and you’ll miss it cameo as the owner of the mount!
You should definitely watch Meaning of Life, it’s not quite as good as Holy Grail or Life of Brian, but it’s still a great watch. You should check out A Fish Called Wanda too! It’s Cleese and Palin reuniting plus Kevin Kline and Jamie Lee Curtis, it’s an absolute gem, you would love it.

There's actually _four_ movies by the _Monty Python_ troupe, but the first one, _And Now for Something Completely Different,_ was just a re-enactment of some the greatest sketches from their TV show. "Remastered in HD", so to speak. _The Meaning of Life_ is a return to their original absurdist sketch comedy roots, but with something of a thematic through-line. Sort of.
There's a fifth movie, Monty Python: Live at the Hollywood Bowl" also featuring sketches from the TV series - my favourite sketch is undoubtedly the Philosophers World Cup football match between Greece and Germany

The show had some really great skits. Bicycle repair man, the race of twits, the world's deadliest joke, the dead parrot, so many great skits from the show. The meaning of life is really funny & great. It surpasses the holy grail & life of brian

The people playing the guards were random people from the street that were just told to stand there and, under no circumstance, laugh. So those are real laughters, as they were utterly unprepared „civilians“

They were all previously hired and paid actors, but some say, that they had a bet going with the directors, that if they would manage to not laugh at this largely improvised scene, they would get paid more. Though some people say one thing and one the other on that matter, so I can't really tell you which is true. I love to imagine them actually having to hold their laughter for money being true tho xD
The Guy singing the song at the end is Eric Idle who wrote it. He also wrote another grat song called the Galaxy song for the Monty python Meaning of life film.

Being from Wales my favorite line is "Leave that Welsh tart alone" - a subtle fourth wall break. The actress who played Judith was from Wales (where else with a name like Sue Jones-Davies) and in later years became a politician and Mayor of the Welsh town of Aberystwyth. As you have found you don't need to know much about religion to enjoy, but there is so much more. The first adult scene for example is Jesus ( I think this is the only time we see him) delivering the Sermon on the Mount - a key part of Christian teaching. "Blessed are the cheesemakers" was actually "Blessed are the peacemakers" - Gospel of Matthew Chapter 5 v 9

Former Beatly and friend of the Pythons George Harrisson bankrolled the film. The Pythons thought he was well off, but he actually mortgaged his house to raise the millions in cash. When asked why he said "I really wanted to see it !" Most expensive cinema ticket ever.
Michael Palin and John Cleese actually went on a debate show with a Bishop and noted Christian Malcolm Muggeridge arguing about how they were being blasphemous, but their argument stands... they treat Christ with utter respect... IT'S ALL THE IDIOTS THAT GET THE MESSAGE WRONG that they are laughing at.
The entire follow the shoe/ gourd skit sums up all of religion in just 3 mins.

27:30 I'm sure you didn't know this, but that random preacher who stands there while they scarper is SPIKE MILLIGAN, famous Goon and basically the grandfather of alternative comedy - and in my opinion probably the funniest person who ever lived. He happened to be in the area and they brought him in for a cameo. For me it's one of the best moments in the film because of his physical comedy acting, with the hands and all that - and he just looks so uncomfortable. It's brilliant!

In the DVD extras, Cleese says that when they wrote the film they got to the end and didn't how they could make the audience feel good when the main character is killed. So they went to Eric Idle, who Cleese said was always good at coming up with the best songs, and asked him to come up with a song that would make the audience feel good while leaving the theater after just seeing Brian get killed. And that's how Always Look On the Bright Side of Life happened.

Funny story: wearing a "Romani ite domum" shirt once got me talking with a cashier at my local grocery store who wanted to know what it said. Because of that, she recently asked me to tutor her in Latin, which she needs for her degree course.

I love recommending to anyone who loves Monty Python, to look for The Goon Show. It's an old British radio program from the 50's, and it's what the guys in Python grew up listening to. There are no words to describe it, I would say even better than Python even though it's only radio. There are some animated bits and stage performances that can be found on YT.
The old guy who says "Let us pray" was Spike Milligan, one of the ones who started The Goon Show. The man was an absolute twisted comedic genius.

There's behind the scenes interviews with the casts on CZcams. They said that the Roman soldiers are extra volunteers and their laughing reaction is genuine especially the Biggus Dickus scene.
Those actors weren't given a script for the Biggus Dickus scene. The director told them to stand there and not laugh. They had no idea what was coming. To me that makes the whole scene funnier.

There's another medieval Monty Python movie called "Jabberwocky", and a pirate-era movie called "Yellowbeard" before they got to "The Meaning of Life." "Jabberwocky" is a semi-skit based movie that examines one bright young lad's journey from the dark ages to the rennaisance/industrial era. "Yellowbeard" is a straight up buccaneer adventure for treasure... kinda. "The Meaning of Life" is set modern as a skit-driven piece, with the title thought stringing us along through the various stages of life itself and philosophies thereof, as only the Python's can.

The spoken section of "Bright Side" over the credits actually recounts the reason why George Harrison mortgaged his house to finance, through HandMade Films, this movie.
"I said to him, 'Bernie,' I said, 'they'll never make their money back.'"
This was Lord Lew Grade, head of ITC (which supported and financed The Muppet Sow 1975-81) speaking to his brother, Lord Bernard Delfont, both of whom were major players in British entertainment from at least the 1950s to the 80s. Neither brother thought the film would even recoup its costs, so they pulled their planned funding at the last moment, leaving the Python team with flights booked and financial commitments for rentals etc.

Your laugh is so contagious! Life of Brian is probably my favorite comedy movie of all time and in my top-10 in any genre. And I'm a horror/scifi fan mostly. The best thing is that every time I watch it I find different things to be the most amusing. When I was a teen the best parts were totally different than now as an adult.
The Meaning of Life has probably the greatest songs ever written by humans (hamsters excluded). Also many more lines that will never leave your head.
Monty Python set the standard for absurdist sketch comedy with their BBC series Monty Python's Flying Circus (1969-1974). If you ever choose to react to a television series, that's a fun one and it is only 4 seasons. My favorite of their movies is Monty Python's The Meaning of Life (1983). It is very similar in format to their sketch comedy series, being sketches around a central theme, but with an absurdly disjointed approach to narrative structure. (Not everyone's cup of tea, but it is the trademark of Monty Python's style.)
