On an additional note, Mel Brooks did plan on a sequel to this, but Rick Moranis's wife died, and he took a long break from acting. Mel Brooks went to George Lucas to get his blessing to do this movie. His only condition was no merchandising as spaceballs action figures would be too close to star wars. Mel had no plans to do any merchandising but that condition gave him the idea to make it a gag in the movie. By all accounts George Lucas loved the movie. Rick Moranis ad-libbed the scene playing with the dolls. They were part of the merchandising gag and just grabbed them and he did that.

The difference between a Mel Brooks movie and something like "Epic Movie" is that Mel Brooks understands the difference between "parody" and "reference."
While newer "parody" movies tend to just take a thing from other modern movies, point at it, and "go it's that thing! From that movie! It's funny!" Mel Brooks crafts stories with interesting characters, while also taking apart the tropes and conventions to a type of story. There's obviously a lot of Star Wars in Spaceballs, but there's bits from other sci-fi franchises, and just science fiction in general.
As for his movies, I personally feel "Dracula: Dead And Loving It" is highly underrated.

The problem with "High Anxiety" is that you really need to know your Hitchcock to get what's going on: the first time I saw it I hadn't seen anything other than "Psycho" and the "The Birds". "High Anxiety" came off as dull and nonsensical. After seeing a few Hitchcock movies, I got it and thought it was really, really funny and also well done.
I like the original "Producers": it's clean, spare and wastes very little time in getting us from one point to another; the script and the priceless cast sell themselves deftly and with dry, dark humor. The re-make is wonderful but, I think, overdone; and whether or not he's dated, LSD from the original is part of what completes things, and not having him in the newer version unmakes things for me a bit.

Two quick notes. First, I don't know if you watch Star Trek, but the Spaceball using the Afro comb in the desert and calls out, "We ain't fuond sh*t", is Tim Russ, best known to Trekkies and Tuvok from Voyager.
Second, you may be amused to know that all the references to merchandising in the movie are a subtle jab at George Lucas. Much a Al Yankovic doesn't legally need to get permission from an artist to parody one of their songs but does so anyway to maintain goodwill, Brooks didn't need to get Lucas' permission to parody Star Wars, but did so anyway. Turns out Lucas loved the movie and gave permission with only one condition, that the movie not release any merchandising material. I guess Lucas didn't want it to be confused with Star Wars stuff, but one has to imagine there is a link to the condition and the continual references in the movie. This movie even gave us the "Not a flamethrower" flamethrower from Elon Musk.

Strange. The first time I saw Spaceballs, and witnessed Pizza The Hut, it didn't make me gag, it made me crave pizza. It still does, all these years later.
EDIT: The reason that Yogurt has a merchandise store in his lair is really kind of funny in itself. Mel Brooks went to George Lucas and asked permission to make a Star Wars parody. Lucas liked the idea and gave Brooks the immediate green light, but with one stipulation ... there could be no competing Spaceballs movie merch, like action figures and that kind of thing. Lucas is famous for retaining the rights to merch when he made the original Star Wars and he has made a billion dollars from it. Brooks was very happy to acquiesce to that request, probably because he had no plans to create or market any toys in the first place. And he couldn't resist taking a jab at it in the movie. From what I heard, Lucas LOVES Spaceballs even though that scene pokes fun directly at him.
Also, in the scene toward the end when the singling/dancing alien popped out of that guy's chest, I don't think you really "recognized" the actor. Yes, he's the guy that played Olivander in the Harry Potter movies. BUT! He is also the very same guy that played the character from the first Alien (1979) movie that had a Zenomorph exit his chest. That's what the line, "Oh no, not again," meant. It's way funnier when you remember that movie.

One of my favorite moments in this film, which I didn't even catch the first time (you may have noticed while editing), is when they're reading back the combination to the air shield and he's just staring at the camera and nodding, but he almost loses it. -When Dark Helmet says "Take 5", no Spaceball is seen for the next 5 minutes. It's a subtle 4th wall break

Here are some additional references you might have missed:
Mel Brooks had the blessing of George Lucas in creating Spaceballs. Spaceballs used a lot of the same special effects team from Star Wars. As a part of their agreement with Lucas, Spaceballs were prohibited from commissioning any merchandise. The running merchandise gag was an in-joke referencing the fact that they were not actually allowed to create or sell any merchandise as well as a spoof on Star Wars' excessive use of merchandising.
The guy who cameos in the diner scene and has an Alien burst out of his chest is British actor John Hurt. Hurt played "Kane" in the original Alien movie. Kane was the crew member who became infected with a chest burster and was killed when it emerged from his chest in the ship's galley. Hence his line, "Not again!"
"Princess Vespa" is named for the iconic Italian brand of motorised scooter.
Tesla's premium model is named the "Plaid", a direct reference to "We've gone to plaid!" in Spaceballs.
In one of the Star Wars prequels, there is a scene where an inconspicuous Spaceballs crew is literally "combing the desert" in the distance. In one of the Senate chambers scenes, there is a glimpse of the delegate group from Planet Spaceball.
Now for the deepest joke in the movie:
    1. The "Schwartz" is probably a reference to A.R. Schwartz, a 20th Century lobbyist, lawyer and Democrat Representative and Senator from Texas. He was known as a tough and spirited debater and a difficult man to beat in an argument.
    2. The Han Solo analogue, "Lone Star", is the nickname for Texas and is likely tied to the same reference.
    3. Schwartz was known as a "yellow dog Democrat" ("They'd vote for a yellow dog before voting Republican" ). Barf is a yellowish "mog": "half man, half dog".
The joke is tied together by Lone Star "using the Schwartz" while his closest companion is a yellow dog.
BONUS FACT: The actor who played Pizza the Hutt suffered burns from his costume, which was made with real melting cheese and toppings. "Vinnie" really ate some of Pizza.

@@shawnpatrick1877 A couple moments in it are subtle satire on the original that people unfamiliar would miss, but yes it is still very funny if you aren't.

Darling! EVERYTHING Mel Brooks did was GENIUS! John Hurt in that final scene, replay of "Alien", "Oh NO, not again!", in "Spaceballs". Brilliance!😅
🥰😍 Watch everything he ever did. ... Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, The Twelve Chairs [introducing Frank Langella!] The actual history takeoff is so brilliant! Was big time unsung ... Watch 'em all!
Oh, and, The 'Mr. Pinky' guy was Jerry Stiller, of the 1969s/1970s comedy team of 'Stiller and Meara', Ben Stiller's dad.

I would put in a vote for “The Producers” (1967). It also stars Gene Wilder and the incomparable Zero Mostel. This is my absolute favourite Mel Brooks film. I am sure you will also like the 2005 musical remake with Matthew Broderick and Nathan Lane, but I recommend starting with the original.

@22:59 the actor is Stephen Tobolowsky who has been in god only knows how many movies and TV shows. Although probably best recognized today as Ned Ryersun from Groundhog Day, but if you've watched any TV or film in the past 30 years you've probably seen him in more than a couple things.
Fun fact about Tobolowsky: He co-wrote the 1986 film "True Stories" with David Byrne, the lead singer from Talking Heads. During production he had told Byrne that he thought he might have psychic abilities. This inspires Byrne to write the Talking Head song "Radio Head" for the movie. This song is where the band Radiohead took its name from.

Your reaction was a treat! This was clearly right up your alley, and you caught everything it threw at you.
The other movie references: Lawrence of Arabia for the music while wandering in the desert, and Bridge on the River Kwai for the tune the Dink Dinks were dinking. So glad you got the Wizard of Oz and Planet of the Apes references, many reactors don't. I assume you recognized Michigan J. Frog's singing from One Froggy Evening as the chest burster exited.
I was laughing nonstop right along with you. This was delightful. Along with this and the two you mentioned, my fourth Mel Brooks movie in a pretty close tie is History of the World Part I. Once you start it is hard to stop. Looking forward to that Blazing Saddles reaction!
Edit: You'll get over the pizza thing, we all do.

The story of the dancing singing frog in the W.B. cartoon is a guy sees him doing it, thinks he'll get rich promoting it, but every time the frog is put on stage, he just sits there like a normal frog, and people assume the guy's trying to trick them out of money.

Fun fact to the "jam scene": To disturb or interupt signals in radiocommunication, you use a so called "jammer". That makes the scene so hilliarous funny.

The end of this film makes several references all at once.
    The chest burster- Aliens.
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe - a great Sci-Fi book
The musical number by the Alien - A jingle made to sell calls to home for deploying men of WW2.
The beach scene- Planet of the Apes

Great reaction. I read the book before I saw the movie and it was also great. The opening with Spaceball 1 was because all the Star Wars films opened with a Star Destroyer and started off the 'big ship' trend. In the book, they carried that off by having an entire half page dedicated to the line "the huge engines pushing section, after section, after section, after section, after section, after section, after section, after section......" etc.

For the Alien scene, Yes it was the actor that played Olivander (William Hurt). But, more importantly, he was the actor from the original Alien movie that experiences the first chest burster. That's why he says, "Not Again!"

So many inappropriate jokes for the young ones to watch, so inappropriate that it's comedy gold! Glad to see this one on your channel!!! The diner scene was a parody of the move "Alien". The guy having the alien coming out of his stomach and a few others at the diner were in the movie "Alien" and he also had an alien coming out of his stomach in that movie. That's why he says not again.
