    Hi Connor, basically what makes Rolls Royces so special is build quality and the materials they use, more than 65% of Rolls ever built, starting in 1903, are still on the road. That's not counting ones in museums and collections, it's incredibly rare for a Rolls too be scrapped.

    • @squidcaps4308
      @squidcaps4308 Před 25 dny +2

      A lot of that is because it is wise to repair and maintain them as they often increase in value. Rolls are not so much better built than other cars, it is just the incessant maintenance that they get thru decades that keeps the numbers so high. You could have 65% of VW Beetle's still running if they were meticulously kept in working order by passionate and devoted owners... and if they had the reputation and value.

      At 17 I had a full motorcycle licence so I could drive a three wheeler and I bought a Reliant Regal which is the predecessor of the Reliant Robin. I drove it enthusiastically until a few weeks before my car test when I went too fast over a humped back bridge on a country back road and put the suspension through the fibreglass body shell floor and writing it off. They were really dangerous in a strong wind and if you took a corner too tight you could roll it even easier than Clarkson did in the Robin. Cheap on tax and good fuel mileage too so you could overlook the deathtrap bit as obviously at that age you think that you will live for ever.

    The objective in the 1st clip was that the road they wanted to use was an alleged mine field so they had to get down the mountain. A group of engineers were ‘luckily’ nearby and Clarkson had them use their cable to help him get down the sheer drop. Obviously Hammond and May met him at the bottom having ‘found’ the road down that they needed to follow….

    Well Rolls-Royce is what Cadillac wishes it was lol. They're built to incredible standards with expensive components, metals, woods, plastics the whole lot hell you can personalise them however you want, you don't buy a RR, you're taken aside and you go through a catalogue of what woods you want in the interior, kinds of leather, which side wheels on, size of the wheels, what you'd like the spirit of ecstasy made of you can have that made of synthetic diamonds if you want it's ridiculous. Yes BMW bought them in the early 00s I believe and their techs in them, but that just means they're very livable too. I'd love to be able to own one mind, I'd want mine with that 9L V16 lol. I mean you'd just have to.

    3:32 Depends, i don't know about car's, but if you have an inboard powerboat with above water exhaust and no exhaust "flappers", the stren wave can go up the exhaust if you slow down to fast, this will hydrolock the engine. To fix it you need to pull the spark plugs out and turn the engine over to blowout the water. The trouble with a car engine going fully under water is all the electrics shorting out. But if the car is off and you let it dry out completely it should still work.

    A car going underwater doesn't kill an engine but it all depends. Engines need air, just like we do. Do work underwater they need a snorkel, a pipe above the water to breath, just like we do.
    But everything depends on the situation. An engine works by compressing fuel and air above a piston, then exploding that mixture forcing the piston to turn a wheel. (basic) . If water gets in to the place where the compression of air and fuel are. There's a problem. You can't compress water. So as it tries to compress air and fuel it cant because there's water. It usually just stops the engine. But it can cause severe damage. It all depends on the situation.
    One of the main problems of normal city cars is when they go through large puddles with an experienced driver will often stall. The negative pressure from the now non functioning exhaust will suck water back up into the engine. A lot of modern cars have fail safes to stop this happening. But if you should stall in a deep puddle over your exhaust. Don't try to restart it. Get our and push it to some where dry and call a tow truck. It's better to spend £200 on being towed than £2000 on a new crank shaft.

    Almost every product is made to meet a price point. The reason Rolls Royce has such a reputation for quality and refinement, is that it's one of the few products that isn't. They build the car by hand using the best materials and technology for the job, regardless of cost. Then at the end, work out what they need to charge. Steinway Pianos are another good example.

  • @squidcaps4308
    @squidcaps4308 Před 25 dny

    If engine goes under water it will be "fine", as long as you disassemble it and dry it out. Tons of WD-40 is required, it is not an oil but water displacement fluid. If the engine goes underwater while it is running and it gets into the cylinder while pistons are moving: hydrolock. Air is compressible, water isn't. Then it can easily destroy itself. The biggest risk is really corrosion, and it doesn't take a lot of it to ruin all the surfaces that need to be smooth and polished. Electrical systems needs to be completely replaced, and the wire harness is often the last nail in the coffin. They are not cheap to replace....

  • @mattybob12310
    @mattybob12310 Před 29 dny

    Clarkson had an Electrical issue in his Car so he proceeded to hit all the Electrics with a Hammer, he asks the others "What else is Electrical in here?", whilst beating on the Exhaust Manifold (Obviously has no Electronics in it), to which they reply "Not the Exhaust Manifold...", stating the obvious to an oblivious Clarkson.
