She's interesting. Her humiliation due to her horny-girl possession and inadequacy against combating her initial onslaught of demons, combined with her mental fortitude to accept her weaknesses and to make right her past hypocrisy makes me like her a lot more. She burned false witches at the stake yet became one. It somehow fits perfectly in Berserk's fractured world.

Since everything is coming full circle again in Berserk, could anyone see Guts eventually becoming the type of King that Geiseric never became ? That would be a tremendous blow to Griffith as well, in fact it’s probably a nightmare he never even perceived.

    • @TheKeyser94
      @TheKeyser94 Před rokem +16

But ow Guts overcome the mark of sacrifice? In one way or another, he and Casca are destined to die, only of course, that the idea of Falconia backfire on Griffith, because the Idea of Evil feeds on human misery and desesperation, he created a pseudo-utopia, the reign that he dreamed would be the cause of his downfall, after all, because the Idea of Evil would have no use for him or the God Hand.

@@TheKeyser94 thanks. Im just throwin shit at the wall and seeing if it sticks. What you said makes sense. I’m thinking perhaps overcoming Griffith somehow removes the curse. Do you really think they’ll have a bad ending for those two (guts and casca) after all they’ve been through? Griffith will eventually be revealed for the demon he is for all to see and Guts will be the true savior. That’s what my thinking was when I asked the question.

@@ScamLikely504 The two pillars of Berserk are the nature of good and evil, and the religion, even if Guts truly kill a god or semigod a second time. People really would stop believing? After all, things outside Falconia aren't really great, demons are in the land, but it would give a blow to the God Hand, showing that they are just like the Apostles, they can be defeated, that they not have the final world over causality or determinism, but Griffith is a small fish in a great pond, the one to kill is Void, he is the one that began the God Hand, and sacrifice a whole city to become what he despise, killing him, would cut the head of the snake, sure it would be still suffering and misery, but the God Hand wont have more control the destiny of humans as they use to.

I also realise that maybe Griffith is being manipulated by Void, because he want to do what he did a millennia ago, sure, that Griffith would have his kingdom, but he is very low ranking in the God Hand, maybe in his ambition to create his own kingdom doomed what left of humanity, because the hundred years war, show Void that humanity hadn't changed and see them all as sinner deserving of punishment, even if that mean being devoured alive by monsters.

At first read, I think Farnese was a misguided bratty zealot and didn't really understand her appeal as a character. It was the second read that I realize Farnese was a neglected, lonely, scared little girl who had no friends, only servants and her aloof father who only give her a crump of his attention when she caused troubles. Guess what she did so her father could give him a minute of his time? And her zeal was a bad case of coping mechanism to deal with her fear of being alone and powerless. It's no surprises that those things vanished almost immediately when Farnese found someone who truly cared about her, appreciate her as a person, and honest about how they feel about her.

Both Roderick and Farnese could go on adventures together after this is over, Roderick prefers to be at sea anyway. So it’s not as if she would be stuck at home or on land, and besides sailors regard her as their goddess.

In terms of the future. I think she will accept the fact she can't be with Guts. I say this is the reason is because she has gained so much since she met him and will respect the fact that he has shown her what the world is really like. She basically just has a crush. As she matures a bit, she will see that due to Guts she is complete and that due to him she can be her. She will most likely see that her half brother has always been there for her without much complaint. That is just MY theory.

As much as I liked most of the Berserk videos, even those that seem a bit far fetching with their interpretations (because they where based on nothing but speculations), this one I can't agree on most of the points made. Even down to how you pronounced her name (although this is just the result of english pronunciationof an italian name).
Regarding her name, it is actually another historical reference. Her first name is the name of the equivalent of the italian family which inspired the Vandimions. Not sure where that name comes from, but I guess it's similar to Vritannis, which is a mixture of italian cities like Florence and some spanish influences.
I think the "complete antithesis to the Black Swordsman" goes a bit far. If anything it is the other way around. Guts is the antithesis of what Farnese tries to be. He rejects god where she leans on faith. He follows nobodies lead while she tries to satisfy the will of others. He doesn't show any of the self-doubt and weaknessess she hates about herself. He stands alone against what she fears while she hides behind others, doing nothing on her own.
I think the main cause of the misunderstandings of her character come from going with the order of events in the manga instead of the chronological order. Her background story puts her reasoning in a very different light. If you understand it that is.
She isn't interested in power. That is a false interpretation coming from how she behaves as the leader of the Holy Chain Knights. She not just has no real interest in the position but knows that she is not qualified. Which is the main reason why she is so conflicted and angry. She tries as hard as she can at doing her duty and fails miserably. Because it's not who she is and what she is good at.
She is not lashing out because a desire for power or sadism but because of frustration at her own inadequacy. It is being powerless but not in the sense of not having power but rather not being able to deal with things. The lack of leadership. Lack of any martial skill. Lack of faith. Lack of self-control. We learn why she does that from her earliest memory the manga gives us, her throwing the torches at the stake. With everyone cheering her on her loneliness and fear was made into something positive. She was praised and affirmed for causing something terrible to others, making her feel good from it. No wonder she became twisted.
Every time she can't face something she becames irrational and lashes out. Just as she did as a child. Being afraid of the storm made her run outside, smashing busts. Burning animals and toys that didn't "get attached to her" or where called childish (meaning they didn't help her with her loneliness and she getting scolded for). Even the crual things she did to Serpico where made out of fear he would leave or cause her pain, trying to get rid of the thing she feared one way or another. Either he would do what she feared, then she had caused it before she could get attached, or he would not and she could allow herself to get attached.
As hard as she tries everything she does ends up in failure, constantly reminding her about her own self-doubt. This is made very clear when she meets her father. It's what her father says, reciting her previous failures. And is what she basically says herself in her inner thoughts. Both state it outright how her failures are making her be seen as useless. Her biggest fear and trauma is being seen as useless and therefor being abandoned. Like she was as a child.
The other hugely important moment the video omitted is her mother telling her the true reason why her father was so distant to her. It wasn't him hating her for her failures but fearing her as he couldn't control her. It made her realize that all the self-doubt and agony was build on a falsehood. That it wasn't her failures and uselessness that caused her pain but her father using it as a way to control her. That it didn't matter what she did and how successful she was, the only thing that would make her father happy was obedience. Or distance from him and his interests. He didn't send her away to the Holy Chain Knights because she was useful there but because he wanted to get rid of her.
At the same time her mother confessed that she was proud of her and the obedience didn't matter to her. Meaning that her parents where just horrible on their own and not that her inadequacies where the reason, making it not her fault in the end. All the guild she felt was in the end pointless. Which gives her the strenght to let go of the guild and reunite with her friends instead of obeying the will of her father.
Leaving out this crucial part is either hard negligence or trying to obscure what doesn't fit the chosen narrative.
The main thing that drives this character is purpose, or to be more precise her feeling a lack of purpose. Instead of taking her childhood as the motivation for her later self you took her later self and used it to interpret her childhood.
Farnese doesn't change her core aspect of purpose at any point. What chances is her perception of purpose and trying to find it on her own instead of being told what her purpose is suppose to be. Her failing at everything before she managed to connect to Casca and learn magic is what makes the big difference between the old and the new Farnese. Only after she abandoned her old life and slowly learned closed to finding her true purpose she became a different person. And this was all initiated by Guts. Just like Cascas journey started with Griffith giving her the means to find a different purpose in following him.
Her courney should mirror Cascas in how she should overcome the man that initiated this journey once she found a purpose on her own. Which will be linked to magic in one way or another.
Her love for Guts is somehow both spot on and missing the point.
She is looking at Guts just like Casca did at Griffith. But just like Casca it's not as much romantic love as admiration and devotion. And the devotion part is the crucial one.
Sure, there is desire in her, especially during the interrogation and her abduction directly after. She still is a young female surrounded by a lot of young man. A female that had never anybody that she could trust enough to get close to her so she could even begin to develop any romantic feelings.
The only exception so far was Serpico, precisely because he was the first person in general that stayed by her side and gave her any chance of feeling anything resembling closeness to another human being. Both because Serpico was the only one close to her she felt she could let her guard down and because he was her servant that let her do basically anything to him (even hurting him regularly) he was the only one she dared to try having any romantic feeling for. The rejection was very hard on her and made her lash out in the extreme, burning down the mansion (which is btw the reason why she was called the 'Devil Child').
But we also saw how it closed this door effectively. She never even looked at him with any form of desire again. Just as a "servant", but more the only person she trusted and felt close to. Which hints at her never being actually interested in him this way but how she did it because he was the only one that in her mind was an option. Not through a lack of suitors. Her being teached as much and therefor understanding from a young age that others will use her for her family connections, not for her as a person is making her reject them all without even considering any of them. She even forced Serpico fighting duels to get rid of the suitors (possibly also others, that insult him, as she didn't show much reaction when they talked about her but immediatly exploded when they badmouthed Scerpico), punishing him for holding back (which would have just cause more problems and would have gone against the reason why he did it in the first place).
Especially after the rejection she is terrified of her sexuality and hates it as another weakness and sin. The reason for the self-flagellation isn't masochism but punishing herself for the lack of control over her sinful desires. Exactly the same reason for why it was done historically. Not just in orthodox religion mind you.

    • @Errtuabyss
      @Errtuabyss Před rokem +7

      (2/2)
The reason why she hates Guts so much at first is not just because he is basically the Antichrist. That is important as it was her mission to investigate the possible coming of the Hawk of Darkness. The main reason is Guts shattering her fragile armor of faith she builds her whole existence around. If she isn't a faithful servant of god she loses the only purpose she has. it is NOT because some illusion of power. It is the illusion of a purpose in her life, a place she belongs and a reason for her existing at all. Thinking this has something to do with power is a failure in understanding both the character and faith in general.
During her abduction her faith is damaged even more, partly because she witnesses the supernatural (first-handed) but also because everything she believed to be true about Guts was at least put to the question. He had no reason to act the way he did unless there was some truth in what he said. Which does not collaborate with what she does believe to be truth at that moment. Even the horse scene builds on her core theme of failure and purpose as she makes silly demands of an animal (failure) and the supernatural result in another blow to her faith (purpose) in how the world works.
After her faith being pushed to the limit she is not able to muster her mind even to make a basic prayer, something she had done so many times and should be easy to do. That shows how fragile she is mentally at that moment. She is „empty“, an easy pray to be possessed. How much of the lust was already in her, evoked by the possession, or the spirit itself (could be the same that tried to mount her as the horse) we can't know (could have been something to do with a certain other female interested in Guts and particularly rubbing herself on his sword for all we know). We only know how terrified she is about what happend after. She is also horrified by the idea of him spilling the guts (sry, couldn't resist) but not because the loss of power but it taking away from her the purpose she had. She can't keep her position with her desires being known and she has no other purpose outside of it.
This is most likely the start of her obsession with Guts, but also the start of her changing her perspective on the world at large.
This can be seen as early as the first interactions with Mozgus. She is asking questions about faith where before she had shown no doubt or hesitation. She feels inspired by Mozgus because he is what she tried to be all this time. He doesn't falter in situations that cast doubt in her mind. He is even punishing himself for his lack of faith when he is faithful to the point of madness. He is the personification of what the goal of her old life was.
Guts is the opposite of what Mozgus represents. So her admiration for Mozgus is representing her connection to her old way of life, while Guts represents a world of supernatural, a world where you stand on your own and face your fears. The reveal of Mozgus true cruelty and him being defeated by Guts mirrors Farnese own convictions. What she saw let her abandon her old faith in search of the truth and a way to find own place in the reality of the world outside of what others pushed her in her whole life.
Just like Serpico was the first to show her true kindness and closeness Guts shows her a different way of life. For her he basically saves her from the life of self-doubt and hatred she was suffering in. Serpico saved her from lonliness and possibly madness, Guts saved her from becoming something like Mozgus. Guts constantly pushes her to act, do things she wanted but was afraid of doing. Mozgus was constantly telling her to obey and follow.
Schierke is just as important for her journey. But her impact is different. She shows her a purpose and kindness she always longed for, which is why Farnese didn't even hesitate calling her master, when her old self would do a very opposite thing. The thing is that all of that is still only thanks to Guts, which made her do the first step. Everything positive happening is somehow always linked to him in the end. So of course she keeps her devotion to Guts and idealizes him.
But does this make her love him romantically? I doubt it. There are many scenes where it's obvious that she tries to overcome this kind of feelings and accept Casca as the woman at Guts's side. The scene at the beach before they firs encounter Kushan demons for example. Seeing Guts, Casca and the Child together makes her feel jealous, but she says herself that she doesn't see him in this way. Not in the way of someone she would have a family with. She still loves him as her saviour and maybe more. But at least she tries to distance herself from romantic love.
The relationship between her and Roderick is also not without any room for development. It's not like he didn't manage her to blush.
The mirroring part is the weirdest to me.
Her outburst with Casca is no proof of love. Of course she is frustrated with Casca for her being completely unable to see or react positively to Guts sacrificing everything for her over and over again. She cares deeply for both of them and her condition is what makes a positive resolution for either Guts nor Casca impossible.
Precisely because she mirrors Cascas obsession with Griffith, which chose Guts as the man she loves but still couldn't let go of her feeling of obligation to Griffith, there should be less of a reason to believe in any romantic connection between Farnese and Guts. And Farnese is exactly the person that would go as far as worship someone so important to herself.
Roderick is also not the type of guy that would „settle down quietly in a place called Staufen and die either sinking in whine, women or at the sea“. First of all Staufen is his name (taken from a historical german noble family) not a place. Secondly he is called the „Sailing Prince of Ys“, not because he is setting down any time soon. He is said to choose Farnese because of the stories he heared from Magnifico about how wild she is and how he likes that. He being a gentleman he never shown any interest in other women or was ever shown drunk.. so really nothing said about him is true. Not saying she has to end up with him but it's misrepresenting him pretty hard.
Schierke being similar to Flora and her relationship with the Skull Knight is obvious. There are even direct remarks about that. There is nothing in the source material to hint at why Farnese should take over that role. That is purely fan-fiction.
If anything she would have similarities to who Void was before he became what he is now. Making a video about him and his backstory and not seeing how a former religous leader and magician could take a spiritual role. So even in the fan-fic speculation it makes far more sense for Farnese to be the one dealing with something other than Guts as she hasn't have the connection Schierke and Guts have but all the potential she would need to do a great ritual.
The irony showing Casca in the elven dress while arguing that regaining her sanity being the end of Guts's current path is making it the weirdest of all points made. The similarity to the Flower Storm Monarch as the lover of the Skull Knight is so obvious and the reference so pointless is baffling. Of course Guts's current path is finished by that point. The whole point of the path was restoring her sanity and possibly staying at Elfhelm, which was destroyed! It was pointless to bring any of this up. The only thing we know about her future relevance for sure is that it is linked to Griffith being reborn from the body of Cascas and Guts son that he also... well they are connected to each other. He had shown multiple times how he is protective of Casca seemingly against his will, as if the Child could take over the body for a short period of time. That will play a role in some way or another. And would fit perfectly within the trope of the villain fearing something that might destroy him causing his downfall by his action to remove the danger.

Falconia had been a paradise and safe haven...but it could be viewed as terrible to others.

@@Outcast-0033 Most would disagree, I feel like a lot of Guts' own fuel and themes would fall short without Casca. He's clearly tied to her in a way that no one else is, even if its a trauma bond. And just because you feel like someone isn't useful doesn't mean that their life isn't worth value (i.e., people with special needs, people with debilitating illnesses, etc). Casca brings up a lot of that discourse with regards to the value of life despite the sad turn of her life.
I mean, I grew up with a severely disabled younger brother, whose now in his 30s. He can't speak and has the developmental capacity of a 4 year old. He needs help using the simplest things, including using the bathroom. Never in my life would I abandon him because he's "useless." I now I have custody of him and even though its hard, he's the best thing in the world for me. I think Guts bond with Casca speaks to his character and people can read between the lines and understand what unwavering loyalty and devotion is even in the strange and dark world of Berserk.
