Miura passing away will always be unquestionably tragic, however, him never finishing the story of Berserk and never fully revealing the origins of characters like Void and Skullknight will (in my opinion) elevate his characters to an even greater level of intrigue and mystery. It seems fitting that their stories will never be told, and they will always remain shrouded in the mist of the unknown. They go from being just mysterious....... to transcending unto a mythic and forever unknowable plane, where we will never truly know who they were. It's some of the most Berserk/Miura sh*t of all time.

There's a story about the Vandal sack of Rome where shortly before the sack took place, Gaiseric was actually met by the Pope himself to try and plead for mercy (I can't remember which Pope it was, but I know it was the same Pope who allegedly met with Attila The Hun and convinced him to return to Hungary). The Pope begged Gaiseric to take Rome's wealth, but spare the people, and Gaiseric actually took the Pope's plea to heart, saying, "I'll make that deal, but everything else is mine". This was an interesting meeting if it did occur, because the Pope (like the majority of Romans at this time) was a Catholic Christian, whereas Gaiseric and his Vandals were Aryan Christians.

God Hand Conrad is also likely referencing a Frankish or Germanic King. Guts' name is also a reference to a medeival mercenary with 1 arm. Much of Berserk is inspired by European history and lore, with wink-and-nudge references to real nations like Italy or Britain. The 1st Empire seems to reference Rome, then when Griffith makes Falconia he talks of founding a "2nd Empire".

The previous Godhand probably were not humans, but mythical creatures that may be common in the world of magic at that time. After the incarnation ceremony when Void and Skull Knight (with Gaiseric's death) were born, Void became the chosen 1 that the 4 earlier members had been waiting for. Just like 1000 years into the present Femto was the one. And after Void did, he had it so that all the subsequent godhand members were exclusively humans. Griffith being the 5th human to ever become a God. Why did they ditch the other-than-human race(s) in the Gdhand? It's a mystery.
But I think the key to solving this mystery is in the chapter when Guts meets Flora for the first time and Flora tells him about the origins of the Behelit in his possession. "A fetish that came from unknown depths of the astral world" and that it is executing the will of an unknown being/entity from those depths of the Astral world. The astral world is infamously described as a place where one can get lost (even one such as Flora) but there's some evidence that it may not be a truly infinite space. Because as Flora continues about it, it seems that the God Hand are enacting the will of a greater being and that the Behelits are keys for it all to play out that originated from the same unknown place where "that supernatural being/entity" might reside.
I recall that Void during one of his few appearances has said that the Astral realm is very deep so it takes the Godhand sometime to manifest from their multiple previous locations into the eclipse (it was said either appearing for Count or for Griffith) and hinted that even the Godhand doesn't know about it's boundaries. And during Femto's eclipse, Slan described the event of the surprise appearance of the Skull Knight as "unpredictable" and implied that even the God Hand cannot predict every single thing.
Adding more to this, Skull Knight has said to Guts that your foe is one outside the laws of this world, and to even consider to one day beat him you need to be outside it as well. According to SK, it is in vain for Guts to even consider this as no matter the countless number of apostles he slays, at the end of the day he's human who is bound by the laws of this world (A nudge from the Skull Knight to Guts, to transcend humanity at some point, and maybe through some other way than the Behelit?). Although it is very very highly unlikely that Miura would decide to do that because the manga Berserk has always clearly been intended to be the story of "Guts, a human".
Nevertheless Guts has been carrying that one behelit almost since the beginning of the manga and what is it's true purpose? It is not a crimson behelit but it is still somewhat special as it was activated for an "Apostle" to reborn as another "Apostle" (MAYBE A BOLD KEY to solving the mystery of the physical appearances of the previous GodHand!?) And that is not the only reason that behelit was special, moreover it was 'rejected' and the count is absorbed into the endless vortex of souls. Here we also see that the ones that are sacrificed and the ones that sacrifice others (Count), share the same destiny after death. The behelit with Guts is for this reason special and could be used for an odd purpose in future again. It might be neat to say that: "That behelit now lies beyond the currents of causality".
What a genius Miura was that he left that object with none other than Guts for the entire time, who we know will never discard his humanity.

Maybe Nosferatu Zodd was to Skull Knight what Guts is to Griffith during the Golden Age Arc. And the first Gaiseric shown (the one with the lion helmet) is actually Zodd, and Zodd was the brutal one. (Note that the demon form of Zodd is that of a big cat eith wings and horns).
Remember when Isidro said that the real person he admired was the Raider's Captain who defeated 1000 men by himself? That was one of the only moments in the story when all credit was not given to Griffith.
Well, same as people didn't recognize Guts and gave all credit to Griffith, the same could have happened to Zodd. And over 1000 years people might have mixed their stories giving all credit to Gaiseric when in reality it was Zodd who was the real beast of the battlefield while Gaiseric was more of a Griffith figure, a commander who was undefeated in battle.

    - What I love about Berserk is that something can always be the opposite of what it looks like!
    - At the end of the day the foundation of our theory is just that the owner of the Berserk armor was present at the time of Void's ascension and that person is the Skull Knight.
    - Zodd can still be King Gaiseric (probably not, imo): he is a warrior, he is barbaric in his appearence, he is always looking for a fight, the Skull Knight with the Berserk armor might have been the only one to defeat him (triggering his rebirth into and apostole) while Void can still be the imprisoned sage (making him his servant as a mockery).
    - On the other hand Void can be Gaiseric: he manipulated causality to ascend Femto and resurrect his capital (why would he raise the city he had destroyed), maybe he wanted to conquer everything and the Skull Knight with the Berserk armor stopped him by severing the link to the astral world. At the end of the day we identify him as the "sage" imprisoned in the tower of conviction just because princess Charlotte tells us that this sage was rescued by the angels BUT it can be a manipulated version of history.

I think the most complete theory about Gaiseric is that he became the struggler after Void's eclipse which destroyed his kingdom, he wore the Berserker armour and had his own mythic quest, much like guts. But the armour did what it's doing to Guts. It brought forth his own beast of darkness as it withered away his body. Eventually, Gaiseric confronted his beast of darkness and his ego and his shadow completely separated in a failed individuation.
His ego becoming a revenant of will that inhabited a suit of armour, allowing him to continue his struggle against fate as the Skull knight. And his shadow, his beast of darkness, became Nosferatu Zodd. A demon of the battlefield who knows only war and bloodshed and desires nothing more.
It explains why SK and Zodd have such an adversarial relationship and you can even see Zodd's demon form motif on the top of Gaiseric's helmet.
It makes sense to the story as it's unfurling too. Guts has been doing Jungian shadow work since the Golden age, but that work became a lot less metaphorical after the eclipse. We've seen him confront his shadow multiple times since the black swordsman arc and it's been leading up to what should ostensibly be a Jungian individuation. In which the subject confronts and ultimately accepts their shadow as necessary part of their Psyche. But they don't allow it to rule them.
Apostles are people who allowed their shadows to take full control of themselves as they gave into animalistic desire. The idea of evil is that which lies at the heart of all mankind. Their collective animal desires manifested as a single entity at the centre of the collective unconscious. That is what giving into fate means within the confines to the manga. Of not controlling your animal urges. SK rejected these urges because he could not control them, but in doing so he cut himself off from the human experience, from the collective unconscious. Guts is going to confront his shadow because the Berserker armour is forcing him to, that's its purpose. But he needs to be strong enough to control the beast without rejecting it outright, as Gaiseric did. To complete a true individuation where he remains connected to the things he loves as a man. And isn't simply defined by his struggle against fate.
Essentially moving past being a struggler in world, moving past something that simply swims against the stream of causality. And into something that can potentially change the flow of the stream. By becoming a fully actualised person with command over his own destiny.

No. Zodd is an apostle. Not a shadow of Gaiseric. He even has two forms just like all other apostles. The motiff on the helm looks nothing like Zodd. If anything it resembles Wyald, which would be even more unrelated.. You're looking too deep into it. The stories involving zodd go as far back as 300 years. Gaiserics legend dates as far back as a 1000 years.

Anyway, think what you will but Zodd is simply a warrior of ages past who craved more power. If he was somehow related to Gaiseric/skullknight, it would've already implied by either during their confrontations. You talk as if this is already the case. Can you also quote any of that please?
Yes, they share history as Zodd is over 300 years old and skullknight is even older. Skullknight also collects behelits. They are also both tied to the supernatural. Still does not make them related the way you make them out to be. Make of the motif what you will. I just put them side by side and honestly I don't see it.

I maintain that Skull Knight was not Gaiseric. Gaiseric has crazy parallels to Griffith. Being that he is a conqueror that united an entire continent under his banner. Something that no mere mortal could do as evidence by the state of the world at the beginning of the story. I believe Gaiseric became Void. And that Skull Knight is a forgotten figure who once served Gaiseric. Probably a lesser ruler who was conquered by Gaiseric and became his vassal as evidence by his title Skull Knight. As for the Sage or Holy man. He may have been a sorcerer capable of summoning the four kings. If the Godhand incarnation ceremony and egg of the king cycle are accurate. Then Void would have had an incarnation ceremony 80 years after he ascended to Godhand if he isn’t the first Godhand himself. SkullKnight could’ve been active for decades before this point. But it’s all just conjecture

Heck his kingdom was said to have been destroyed because he was self indulgent by Judeau. If anything Griffiths showing during the council meeting shows he’s grounded amongst his people.

Miura could very well have intended for Gaiseric to have been a proto Griffith only for his story to end in a totally different way compared to Femto's but the fact remains: we do not know anything concrete yet to reach such a conclusion. I myself am open to such a possibility but seeing how incriminatingly obvious the Skull Knight's backstory is i am among many who stick to the notion that Gaiseric/Skull Knight is the past equivalent to Guts just as the Imprisoned Sage/Void is the past equivalent to Griffith.

It would be interesting if it hsd turned out that void is the supreme king and skull night is the sage.
Might be reasonable to view the supreme king was so power hungry that his kingdom decayed beneath him and turned on him, the idea of evil tempting the king to sacrifice his kingdom for his continued existence.
Void being the defacto leader of the godhand might see him wanting to see the 2nd coming of a paradise he failed to build. Backing femto with his vision.
Skull knight being the sage that was left confined as the kingdom was sacrificed, turned into a wraith/ revnant like entity from the grief of being powerless to stop the supreme king.
The Sage being the Skull knight seem plausible as a sage he would have intimate knowledge of the elemental kings and nature of fantasia as it once was, possibly knowing flora before his transformation into an entity of vengeance called skullknight.
Skullknight having so much detailed knowledge of the abyss and magic seems more plausible as he was once a sage.
Void being the supreme king seems more reasonable if you think about why the elemental kings vanished, void having orchestrated their capture or enslavement after they had razed his kingdom due to humanities atrocities peaked.
It may not make sense for the sage to do away with the elementals, as the sage was the one warning the supreme king of his and the kingdoms possible doom.
I can imagine the sage donning the beserker armor in his later years as the first bout of attempts in revenage against void, having that void had condemed the kingdom and captured the elementals.
The supremeking being the first human to fall to utter despair while also having the greatest ambition would lead me to believe the idea of evil would favour him as a catalyst in changing Causality for humans more then the sage.
I gather the idea of evil is the collective will of humans, one of those is to be unified, the king having the ambition to do so and innate desire would make him a more suitable Embodiment of unity to be a godhand member. Void is dispassionately savage to humanlife and apostles. Only wanting one thing, unity of everything. And void of everything. Causality to eventuate.
Skullknight on the other hand, wants freedom, revenge, salvation of everyone.
Supreme king seems like someone that cant let go of power and control. The sage was too compassionate to let go.
Which one sounds like they would give in to damning everyone.
My vote is the guy that thinks he has a profound destiny and is brought so low they would give anything and everything for their own survival.
Not the guy that knew what might happen opposing the king but did so regardless of himself.
Skull knight empathises with guts trying to do good and do away with evil. Holding his convictions above his own life. Skullknight has stated he sees guts treading the same path as himself

Maybe the sage (Void) sacrificed Midland because he truly appreciated it. It could’ve been that Gaiseric imprisoned and tortured him because Void’s prospects on the kingdom differed from his. They could’ve had a relationship similar to Guts and Griffith, meaning Gaiseric was branded during the first eclipse. Since Gaiseric had the Berserker armor during the first eclipse he could’ve fought until the armor depleted him. The armor seems to personify deep emotions, as it can be seen by the Beast of Darkness in Guts. Gaiseric could have had an equivalent that then became an astral being after his death and damnation into the Vortex of Souls. Meaning Gaiseric is truly gone, but a spiritual being of sorts survived the eclipse due to the armors strange properties. Also the initial God Hand could’ve been constructs made by the Idea of Evil until their human replacement. Behelits and apostles could’ve still been occurrences as the Idea of Evil became strengthened as human population and civilizations increased the unconscious will. Explaining Zodd’s rivalry with Skull Knight seemingly spanning as long as their conceptions. And not really being a rivalry set in previous relationships.

    • @burgerandy2729
      @burgerandy2729 Před měsícem

Also there’s this whole theme of causality and how it’s a spiral that repeats, but not exactly the same. In a sense the first eclipse mimics the fifth and we could infer that it did so for the ones in between (making it redundant for the author to fully flesh out their back stories). So the creation of Skull Knight was an unprecedented outcome of the first eclipse like Guts and Casca surviving was for the fifth.
