  • An in depth lesson in how to change the oil in a portable generator. The Chanpion 2500 watt dual fuel generator is used as an example but it is applicable to any small inverter or conventional generator.

I'M SURPRISED AT HOW THE OIL WAS SO DARK. GUESS I'LL BE CHANGING MINE SOONER THAN I PLANNED.

after break in use 5w30 full synthetic. it works better at colder temps like during an ice storm..

the worst thing you can plug into a brand new generator is a space heater.. rule of thumb is half load during break in.

Outdoor Prepper - I always turn off the fuel petcock when shutting my generator down. It takes a minute or two, and I was under the impression that would empty the carburetor bowl. Is that a recommended practice or should I drain it this way?

Thanks for watching! You are correct - always turn the fuel off and let the generator run until it dies by burning the remaining fuel in the line. I have noticed though through the years that some fuel still remains in the carburetor bowl and it can cause issues if left for many months. It’s best to do what you do as well as drain the remaining fuel from the carburetor bowl if you plan on not using the generator for many months and if you carburetor has the drain screw as some do.
