- I have had tremendous success using Oxalic Acid Vapor to treat for Varroa mites in my hives. Here is one way to treat which I have found to be effective. It is efficient and does a good job. You can treat the bees quickly and so this is a good option if there are a lot of bees to treat. I hope you like the video and find it helpful.
Update: As of January 2021 Johno has retired and no longer makes this product. I purchased a new vaporizer that I really like. Check it out at: Lorobbees.com
Here's the link to a video I made after I received the vaporizer:
• Using the LOROB BEES ...
Enjoy!!!

Hes making them again. Just got mine yesterday!
Yeah I have one. I’m thinking about doing a comparison video soon between Johno’s, Lorobbees, and Instavap. 3 different vaporizers at different price points. Might be a fun review to do.
@@brucesbees yeah! I mean for the price.. can’t beat Johnos. Ease of use for sure is your new battery unit. That thing is a sweet! On Johnos I just drive my golf cart pretty close to the hives.. use a 30’ish extension cord and a power inverter. Super easy for me.
@@RCSimRacin yes. I used one of his old units for a long time.
great video! so easy to follow what you are doing....good teaching Bruce!
Being short on time, I fast forwarded through your video, but thanks for posting this; exactly what I was looking for! What I'm trying to find is a way to order the Easy Vap. I just tried sending an email to an address I found on the BeeSource forum. Hopefully they'll get back to me. My hives' mite counts are way too high, and two of my friends swear by the Provap 110. However, at roughly $500, that's not an option for me right now. I'm glad another friend told me to search for alternatives on CZcams, and your video came up high in the results. The blooper at the end made me chuckle, so I liked and subscribed. Thank you again!
I hope you are able to order one. Let me know if you have any problems. I put the email link in the description.
We just received our JohnO's Easy Vap Pro and can hardly wait to use it. Thank you for making this video.
You’re welcome! I have been pleased so far.
Don’t forget to wear protective gear. I am a believer after having some issues a few months ago when making a video without gear.
@@brucesbees Where do you purchase your OA powder?
Look up Florida laboratories. Oxalic Acid. It is very affordable. I order mine from amazon.
At the end, a kiss of gratitude )))
I hear ya haha
Good solid unit ...Johno's is the best for OA>
Yes I love mine.
Even better, check this out . czcams.com/video/d3GEMDybGTw/video.html
Absolutely love my easy vape. The PID controller got messed up somehow and I need to reset it, could you do a short video on how to fix this? Thank you !!
I have never adjusted the controller but just found the directions from back when I ordered the unit.
“If you need to change the temperature press AT key and one of the numerals will begin flashing. That numeral can be changed with the up or down key, pressing the AT key again will move to the next numeral. When all the numerals are where you want the temperature to be, press set key.”
Hope this helps and thanks for watching!
Bruce thanks for the video. very educational! I just received the easy vap from JohnO. cannot wait to try it out. I only have a few hives but I was tired of the wand method. seems you drilled a hole in the bottom box instead of the bottom board, I guess that works as well. I have an outlet in my F250 that can put out up to 400W, you think that will heat up the vaporizer or should I get the inverter? my hives are not around an electric source so would have to use a battery.
Is Johno making them again? I thought he had shut it down? Yes I usually drill in the bottom board. Sometimes I did some different things when I was trying to figure it all out.
@@brucesbees I sent John an email and he still had some on hand, wouldn’t hurt anyone interested in one to contact him.
Ok cool. Not a bad idea. Thanks for the info.
That PID controller is all over the place, either its not tuned, or the thermal coupler has a huge air gap where he drilled. What is the cup material made of ? or base made of ?
Ohhh.. the 🤦🏻♀️😉🤪BLOOPER‼️‼️
Question: why is that cup/band heater so crusty looking? Is it decaying in some manner from the heat and chemical exposure?
If you are talking about the red cup I think maybe a little. I think probably the heat more than anything but really not sure. I have used them a lot. After I made this video Johnno sent me some different cups that he has upgraded to. These red cups still work but maybe the new ones will work even better without breaking down.
Good question. Thanks for watching.
Where can I buy one of the Johno's easy vap? thanks for the great video.
czcams.com/video/d3GEMDybGTw/video.html Check this one out
Johno no longer makes them. Now I use theLorob Bees vaporizer and love it. Here is the link if still interested

On another video of yours I watched earlier I thought the right upper lip was swollen too.
It was lol. I got stung on the Johnno’s Easy Vap video and filmed the Queen Excluder video after that so my lip was swollen during that video as well. Good eye!

are you drilling a 1/4 inch hole for the tube to go into? and then plugging it with a 1/4 inch wood dowel?...how long does the dowel need to be? thanks
I am using a 1/4 hole. Haven’t been using a dowel. The bees will propolize the holes but I just stick a small screwdriver in the hole and wiggle it around to make sure it is clear. Works well for the most part.
@@brucesbees thanks for responding...i have to really watch out for holes that small hive beetle can go it--take care-
I hear ya. A dowel or stick would work well. Or maybe even a nail. Just have to figure out the right size.
@@brucesbees how long do you leave the entrances covered? I hear a golf tee works well for the hole
Have you done any sticky boards to determine any type of mite drop?
I have not. Would probably be a good idea. I have just trusted the results of others and also know that my bees have generally done better since I have treated using Oxalic Acid. Should probably do the sticky board sometime but just never have.
Is the temperature control unit adjustable - does it come with instructions to program the temp? I think 450 is a little too hot
Yes it is adjustable. I haven’t adjusted it though. After I made the video Johnno told me when it reached 400 degrees I should remove the device and move on to the next one. I usually just leave it in a little longer to make sure all the OA has vaporized but may remove at 400 in the future. Great comments and questions. Thanks!
He should use a PID controller that has a better temp controller , like the one I used, The temp is at 230C which is 446F tops,, check it out . czcams.com/video/d3GEMDybGTw/video.html
I just got one of Johno's vaps in the mail. I am planning on using with a older honda ex650 generator. Does anyone think that would be an issue if I use a surge protection?
No. That should work fine I would imagine. I just use a marine battery.
How many hives can you do with the battery?
I think it will work for around 50+ hives but if I need more I will just crank up my truck and use it’s battery hooked up to the inverter.
How many treatments can you get off of that battery? I just got one of Johno’s caps too
I have treated 45 or 50 hives with the battery and it was still going strong. It is a marine battery. I just recharge it and I am good to go.
Perfect! I wasn’t sure if I was gonna have to drive the pickup down to the hives.
Good system. JohnO has a winner! I noticed your wood fence so I am assuming you live in a neighborhood? If so, does your neighbors complain about your bees? 🐝
No they don’t complain for the most part. I did have some neighbors complain about bees around their pool last summer so I set up some water sources. The bees love them but hopefully they will stay away from the pools.
czcams.com/video/LFgbgmgF35Y/video.html
Otherwise the neighbors who know about them have no issues that I know of. Most of my bees are in other locations but my neighborhood is a great spot. The bees seem to do well here. I call it my “Bee Lab” because I try a lot of new things here. It is easier to experiment and try different things when they are close by. 🙂
I had not thought of the pool and water as being a potential problem in a suburban beekeeping situation. I hope that the water set-up that you have installed does the trick. I may come back later in the summer and ask how this is working out if you don't mind? Thanks, Phillip
The bees for some reason can be attracted to pool water. I put these watering stations out last summer and the neighbors did not mention it again so I hope they worked. I like you am curious to see if there are any issues this year.
...and you are absolutely free to ask me any questions you want. I will do my best to answer them
Thanks Bruce, or would you prefer Rob?
can you plug unit in to AC if you have it ...... right?
Yes. Just a normal plug.
I am unable to find any link, other than beesourse thread, on how to purchase this vap. could you get me the link or contact info?
Email Johnno at john_olivier@msn.com
I just ordered a provap110 because I could not find this one
Only $225, plus shipping,,, czcams.com/video/d3GEMDybGTw/video.html
The one at $225 is a different product. Might be just as good or better, I'm just saying. The Easy Vap is $150. I also had trouble finding out how to order. Then I found the guy's email address on the BeeSource forum. www.beesource.com/forums/showthread.php?349751-Johno-s-Easy-Vap-Vaporizer Good luck to you!
Can you leave syrup in hive when treating
As far as I know.
how long do you leave towel on after treatment?
Not long. I usually treat 8 or 12 hives and then move the towels as needed for more hives. I am getting efficient enough now that it is tough to keep up. The vaporizer works so fast that it is hard to move towels and fill cups fast enough.
I don’t know if there is any set amount of time but my towels usually stay in the hives anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes. This method fills the hive so fast that there is no doubt in my mind that it reaches every corner of the box.
I need to do another video now that I am more efficient. but truth is that I don’t do everything exactly “by the book” with regards to protective equipment. It is difficult to wear a mask and goggles under a bee veil, especially when it is hot and humid. I usually just try to stay upwind and avoid breathing the fumes. Probably not the best idea though I have had no issues with it.
Most literature says about 10 mins.
Bruce how well did that vaporizer last for you ? Is it still working in 2022?
It lasted for awhile but I am now using the Lorob Bees vaporizer.
czcams.com/video/ps-Yr_JtcJI/video.html
Now that it has been over a year how do you like the East Vap?
Works great! If treating with OAV it is definitely an affordable option and much quicker than the wand.
Thanks.
It is the best set up for OAV if you need to pick up speed. The standard tule from Bud Willis does a great job if you don’t have many hives.
Obviously, you wouldn't do this if it killed the bees. However, how do you know how much oxalic acid to use? Sort of scared that I'd kill the queen.
I have a 1 gram scoop and the recommended amount is 1 gram per hive body. I usually use one scoop for the first box and then around 1/2 to 1 scoop per box for additional boxes. The bees seem to tolerate it well even if I overdo it a little sometimes. As a matter of fact the bees absolutely thrive. It only seems to take them a few minutes to resume business as usual when the treatment is complete. Have never noticed any real loss of bees or the queen when using either this method or the wand method. OAV seems safe for the bees but is deadly to mites. I have nothing but good things to say about this method. It is a good idea to wear protective gear though. I don’t always do it but try to stay upwind or stand a distance away when using OAV Vapor. I do have a mask and goggles that I can use if I feel like I am going to get more exposure. The mask should be rated for Organic Acid Vapors.
The one gram scoop I use is about equal to 3/4 of a teaspoon if measured using water. I tested it the other day.
What size inverter do you use ?
I believe this one is a 750 Watt. I believe Johnno told me I need 500 or more. It works great for what I need it to do. I think they cost in the neighborhood of $40 +/- at Harbor Freight.
@@brucesbees thanks.
hi, where did you get it? i used the email but i didnt get answer, is it still the same?
Try is again and let me know if you have any problems.
The address in the description has worked for me. May have to type it in separately though. Not sure why you have had problems.
What mask do you use?
RZ Mask
How tu use this tool?thanks...
Not sure of the question. I think I demonstrate in the video.
The Provap to my mind is one of the biggest ripoffs in beekeeping, sourcing most of the parts using reasonable quality is less than $150, on the cheap less than $75, How can they justify the price they charge? I have the basic one, 12v, $20 from aliexpress but waiting for parts to make the Provap copy. Having both a lathe and milling machine i can make it even cheaper than posted above.
Yes I was thinking about ordering the Provap but I am glad I found out about Johnno. Good product and way cheaper. I think I paid $165 including shipping. It was worth it to me. Even if it breaks I can order another one or two for the total price of the provap. Have been pleased so far. Thanks!
even bigger ripoff is the thermal treatments
It does seem like they are crazy expensive.
The same reason why I'm looking around myself. I figure for 165 I should be able to get enough treatments beat the wands' lifespan. I've seen some as low as 45 but am skeptical about the cheap stuff. And 495 for the pro gap is ridiculous. Most of us are hobby beekeepers and that price is just too much.
I'm searching for something that can do the same thing for a lower price.
@@beebob1279 For hobby use and a dozen or so hives you can use the simple 12v wand type, i have one and got it foe 19€ on aliexpress, it takes about 3 minutes per hive with a good battery, i use an old tractor battery that does not hold a charge fore more than a month and just charge it before use. I now have almost everything to make a provap copy, i think on jc's bees there are easy follow videos to make one. having a small lathe and milling machine it should not take long.
How many hives are you able to do with battery and inverter?
I have done 40 or 50 with no trouble. Not sure how many I can actually do. With the Easy Val it is so fast that you can get a lot of hives done. I have run my battery down with the wand but have never reached the limit with the Easy Vap so I am really not sure.
Thanks a lot for the reply
The temp is to high, out of sublimation range so you decarboxylase oxalic acid and formic acid, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are made in this way.
What this means?
This treatment is so less effective against varroa in comparison to proper sublimation.
Reduce the temp into sublimation range!
Are you thinking in Celsius or Farenheit temps?
do you have a contact e-mail on where to order this item?
john_olivier@msn.com
Lol, that bee did not like your microphone
I know. Seriously!!!
i thot he wood vape in a hive then i look at the pictur he used sooooooooooooo
Not as easy as gas vap
Ok. Not even really sure what gas vap is but this is pretty easy. Thanks for checking in.
What kind of battery are you using to the inverter?
I use a marine battery I bought at a local battery store.
