Audi A4 B5 1.8TQ TB60-03 Billet 3-Bar boost - crankshaft timing gear failed

  • 600++hp 1996 Audi A4 B5 Avant 1.8T 20v ADR Quattro (Big Turbo) attepmpting 100-200 km/h acceleration with dragy (from 3rd gear) POV.
    Crankshaft timing gear bolt gone loose.
    3 bar boost, 8850rpm rev limit, 20deg spark angle, ethanol fuel. Mapped by me.
    Some spec list:
    - 1.8T 20v 058, ADR cylinder head (big port), ADR block
    - JE Pistons 302023 81.5mm, Cr 9.25:1, conrods FCP X-beam
    - Kolbenschmidt Sputter conrod bearings
    - ARP M11 head studs
    - FCP Engineering valve springs and retainers
    - Intake valves Supertech AEVI-1103S STD
    - Exhaust valves Supertech AEVI-1103S STD
    - Turbobandit TB60-03 Billet A/R 0.84 T3 Twin Scroll turbocharger
    - BOSCH EV14 2200cc @ 3Bar
    - Precision PW46 wastegate + screamer pipe
    - MAC 4-port boost solenoid
    - Custom exhaust manifold T3 twin scroll by Mooseworks, 38mm runners
    - ADR "J" custom machined camshafts, new stock INA lifters
    - VEMS V3.3 ECU (firmware 1.2.43)
    - Tenaci 4-puck clutch, SRE 3B 707 clutch pressure plate, single mass 240mm flywheel
    - 01E CET gearbox
    - AEM 400lph 50-1009 fuel pump
    - Fluidampr
    - Billet crank gear
    - Simons Sprint Jap 76 exhaust

    That’s why you need gridle plate at this kind of power level, preventing the block flexing and causing the crank to fail. Bolts are not really the reason in that case. If that caused your failure.

    Timing seems really aggressive, especially in the 4-6k range.

    Hello my friend I am building one 1.8 tq too. I used ADR engine, like you, I came across your channel by chance. Should I use the intake and exhaust eccentrics oem ADR. Or should I use AEB or AJL eccentrics ?

    Didn't the MAP peak at 400 kPa? that's 4 bar right?

      That's absolute pressure. Gauge pressure is 3bar.

    Hi, how did it hapen ? It was an ARP bolt torqued to spec ? Too much vibrations ?

      Hi, it was 12.9 bolt, which is stronger, than OEM 10,9. Torqued to spec, used red loctite... But still failed.
      Now gear is dowel pinned and with 1,9tdi 12.9 grade bolt (had to cut it a bit, to fit 058 crankshaft). Holds after that.

      @@vltn_mt Had no time to wait until delivered to my country. I think with ARP bolt it would snap too. Dowel pin is only way to go, if revving to 9krpm with high boost and fast shifting.
