Taliban Says Women Should Cover Their Faces in Public | Dr. Shabir Ally

  • Taliban spokesmen have announced that women should stay home if they do not have important work outside. And women should wear a chador and cover their faces, with male relatives facing penalties if they disobey. They claim these are orders from God, and their latest directives come on top of other restrictions on women, limiting their ability to work, go to school and travel. Dr. Shabir Ally expresses consternation at these statements and says they reflect a blind following of outdated opinions from those who are neither God nor God's Prophet.

if you believe the niqab can be enforced, then i ask you a question.
by your logic we can enforce the 5 pillars of islam too right? bc they are much more important acts of worship than niqab. Why enforce niqab but not enforce salat, sawm, zakat, hajj?? By your logic i can drag my friend to the mosque and force him to pray i can kidnap people and send them to hajj we can starve people and make them fast and we can rob people for zakat. This is why Allah says that there is no compulsion in religion.

I just want to thank Dr. Shabir for updating his thoughts openly on Afghanistan, and being humble enough to be open to changing his opinion. Many people today think this is a sign of weakness and double down on their views or words out of insecurity. As an afghan, I witnessed many Muslims cheer on the taliban takeover out of ideological or even nationalistic sentiment. It was one the worst moments I've witnessed as a Muslim to see people glide past the historical atrocities these people committed. If a Muslim ruler takes the position that it is obligatory to cover the face then enforces it then all the people must obey it as it is a valid opinion within Sunni Islam. I am Afghan, and it amazes me that the world know so little about the crimes Taliban committed in the name of Islam during their first time ruling.
They would force people into prayer. Have watch groups during prayer going around town checking if anyone was on streets or in their shops not attending the mosque. If one was found outside mosque they would get beaten. They would also measure mens’ beard if it was long enough. Men without beard would get punished.
Women had to be seen with Mahram outside their home. There were some widows and people without Mahram had to come up with absurd ways having young daughters dress in boy’s clothes to accompany them.
Aside from that they could pick any young women and demand their family to grant her for marriage. People I know had to flee in middle of night as a whole family abandoning their home to save their daughter.

It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah said: The riders used to pass by us when we were with the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) in ihraam. When they came near us we would lower our jilbaabs from our heads over our faces, and when they had passed by we would uncover our faces. Narrated by Abu Dawood, 1562.
