Does South Park REGRET The Streaming Wars?

  • South Park’s latest Paramount Plus special, South Park STREAMING WARS JUST dropped and I hope ya caught it! It managed to be a natural progression of the story and character development in season 25, tied in a couple of older South Park stories, parodied a classic 70s crime noir all while delivering some of the most over the top meta textual commentary we’ve ever seen from the show. I’m often impressed with their ability to weave meta commentary into an unrelated narrative but this was really next level. So let’s break it all down.

Anyone else find it surreal and hilarious that *this* of all shows is weaving some of the most advanced and intricate climate change allegories on television? Somehow the writing on this show just gets more and more ambitious with age. South Park’s really been leaning into the metatextual lately, but it’s sort of earned the right after being on the air for 25 years. Whatever Matt and Trey are thinking about or going through, they just turn it into a storyline, which in theory is a terrible way to make a TV series. It sometimes feels like the creators are just having a conversation with us through the medium of a cartoon show, draping their talking points in dozens of crazy allegories and somehow still making sense.
South Park is in a rare position to basically say whatever it wants about its corporate overlords and even its own role in the current media paradigm without running the risk of getting yanked off television. It can criticize its owners, it’s audience and itself and still feel very authentic and sincere. Only a show this iconic and irreplaceable can be so naval-gazing and self-indulgent and somehow make it work. Most showrunners would be perfectly happy to rack up a billion dollars by way of convoluted streaming deals, but South Park has never been about the money. If it hurts the quality or confuses the audience, it’s probably not worth it.
As far as the streaming stuff goes, I pretty much see the Paramount + specials as just being part of the season itself. It’s obvious that S25 never really ended and that the storylines were conceived with the intention of building to whatever conclusion we’re eventually gonna reach. Like Butters said, sooner or later most of these services will die off and all of the content will end up together on one platform. Pipi even alluded to this when he complained about wanting all of his stuff together on one service. As long as the eventual home releases are handled properly, with all the COVID specials as Season 24 and the current arc as Season 25, I’ll be happy.
(*Also one more thing. I don’t think Cartman was actually trying to manipulate his friends with the surgery comment, he’s just actually that thoughtless. One of the weird things I’ve noticed about the recent episodes is Cartman’s been a lot more good natured and appreciative of his friends. You could never really tell before if he actually cared about his buds or just needed to have people around to screw with. But ever since he didn’t kill that pangolin, he’s mellowed considerably. Coupled with the fact that Liane’s stopped taking his shit, we might be in for some really interesting character development)

An interesting question, maybe kinda philosophical would be, is Cartman ever going to change, i mean he is the worst, that is kinda his thing, but there have been moments that show that he can change, he even kinda did for a while then he was with Heidi, he just started thinking she would learn about his past, thinking he is not good enough for her and started trying to push her away, even going so far to try to literaly kill her so his own belief that he could not change kinda turned him back into a monster, a very toxic relationship, in the future version he had a family, he did change, but once more his past comes back for him and he turned kinda into the enemy, but in the end he sacrificed his perfect future turning into a homeless person to help his friends. So, do you think he will ever truly change. How could they write a redemption story for him. I mean that boy killed 2 people and forced the son to eat them. He was kinda the most racist and sexist person on the entire show. Having him change for the better was an interesting idea. I wonder how they will keep going with this. Of course he is a metaphore for i think a lot of people in real life. Him not changing is a statement that people in real life do not change, even if they want to. A kinda sad idea. I kinda hope he will change one day.

Cartman had no one to blame but himself back in "City People" because if he had just accept that his mom need to find a job like sell houses to earn money for a living then they would still live in their old house and not force to moved into the cramp Coney Island hotdog 🌭. Then Cartman wouldn't go through with this stupid ideas in the first place like these boob implant that he got so now I'm wondering if he's going to be like thi for the rest of the Season of South Park.

Considering, that Homeless Cartman in the main future canonically doesn’t have Fake Tits then that means that after Liane dies then that means that Cartman will be completely homeless after removing the Fake Tits out of his body, and the people from the streaming services or other wealthy elitists will tear down his old hotdog home, and he’ll be completely broke and homeless until he dies of natural causes.
