  • Jim Palmer had a childhood resembling something out of a movie. He even spent some of his early years in Hollywood. He broke into major league baseball in 1965, and has reliably been on our televisions ever since.

      Yeah, success for the O's always seems to coincide with other powerhouses rising out of their division/league. Case an point, this year, given how strong the AL East is.

    HatBilly, you mentioned the very guy I've been thinking about asking you to do a piece on, Mark Fidrych!! Well, you didn't, but the other guys narrating over your channel did, anyways.
    So, I gotta say it, man..: Most of the charm of your videos is You, bud. You've got a real instinct for storytelling, and having half the damn thing covered by the everyday cookie-cut narration of something that sounds like every other channel on the entirety of TheTube is just fuckin killing me, brother!
    Okay, mini-rant being deployed, this was yet (for the most part) another great video on another absolute fucking legend of baseball for an O's fan, and I enjoyed it, as always. But, I just can't say "Thanks for keeping unique content out here" this time.

    Thanks for sharing this remarkable production. I was looking forward to this release, and it lived up to the hype, and then some. I've had Jim Palmer on the brain the last month and a half, as I've retroactively learned more, and more about the history of the league. This spotlight on Palmer's life, and career has made me an even bigger fan of his legacy. I'll have to check out of one his books in the future. And of course, his games on CZcams. Cheers mate.

EDIT - had Jim not lost most of '67 and all of '68 - he may well have reached the 300 win mark. But as it is the man is one of the greatest starting pitchers of all time.

    So great! For those younger than me, there was no interleague play, other than the All-Star Game and World Series. The first half of this video shows Palmer striking out the best of the best of the 70's, Stargell, Clines (PIT), Joe Morgan(Reds), Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski(Phillies), and in his own league, I think the Angel #22 is Bobby Grich. We all saw the All-Star Game on a major network, and the Series. Otherwise, the Saturday Game of The Week, and for a little while, Monday Night Baseball. We could pretty much all talk about what we saw at school or work, because we all saw the same games. This footage is great! Cal Ripken Jr in the Jockey commercial with a full head of hair!

    • @Hatbilly
      @Hatbilly  Před rokem

      Thank you! The rise of all the regional sports networks sure has changed the landscape. It's great seeing your team more often,, but baseball and conversation piece at school or work is pretty much a thing of the past. I feel like I have to get on the internet to discuss baseball. Thankfully we've built a little community on here. 🙂

      The thing I most admired about Grich was he always played every game like it was game 7 of the World Series , yet always seemed to be having fun. With Blyleven, every time people would say he was washed up or didn't have it anymore, he just went out there and proved them wrong.

    Jim Palmer appeared in all 6 World Series the Baltimore Orioles have played in. If you define a team history by their stay in one city (making Brooklyn and Los Angeles, for example, two different teams), Palmer is the only player who has played in all of his team's World Series among teams with more than 2 appearances.

    • @Hatbilly
      @Hatbilly  Před rokem

      Thanks for pointing that out! A very rare case where one players has soaked up nearly all of the franchise's success.

      @@Hatbilly Someday, of course, Palmer will lose that distinction, when the O's make it to their 7th WS. For anyone reading who might be wondering, there are three other players who appeared in their teams' first six World Series, and, as you might suspect, they're all Yankees, Waite Hoyt, Bob Meusel, and, of course, Baltimore native Babe Ruth (who appeared in their first seven).

    Wins are primarily a team stat 😂😂😂. How many pitchers with average talent/stuff win 20 games in a season? I'm not going to look it up but I am certain that it is an anomaly when it has happened.

    • @Hatbilly
      @Hatbilly  Před 2 měsíci

      When Palmer played, it was the primary measuring stick for pitchers, so it's worth mentioning when discussing players of that era.

    • @jsd795
      @jsd795 Před 2 měsíci

      @@Hatbilly baseball is still baseball and wins are still a strong indicator of the caliber of any starting pitcher. Same goes for traditional offensive stats such as BA and RBI's for position players. Sabermetrics are a farce. It gives nerds the chance to reinvent the wheel and by default screw up that wheel or in this case maybe not ruined the game but certainly have not helped it any.
