I always dry in my tent , on my little washing line , granted it never fully drys but there’s nothing wrong with a little bit of damp pants or moist socks unless your on a multi day hike, great video Tony as per usual 🤙🏕️
Thanks Lee yes absolutely agree and it dries soon enough from walking if not raining 😀
I just lite having my line with my underwear and socks moving with the wind pushing my tent ! It’s like a camping stuff, I’m not optimising just like camping!
Hi Tony and thanks for the reaction! Valid points!
I wanted to clear up a bit of stuff in this answer. In fact, I think my video did so well because I didn't go in-depth on each tip and a lot of people misunderstood them and explained their own thoughts within the comments, which drove up the engagement. :D Also, I try to keep my videos as short as I can, so I just didn't want to explain too much on each tip and instead, just keep it rolling over to the next tip. But in general, a lot of the tips only apply to certain situations as you pointed out. And in some situations, they shouldn't even be used. I should have probably included at least this disclaimer somewhere in the video.
1) I have the REI Flash Air 1 UL tent, which has only 1 vestibule and not many other ventilation holes. It suffers a lot from condensation buildup, so for this tent, blocking the airflow is really bad. It's similar with a lot of other UL tents. On the one that I used in the video, the Outdoor Vitals Fortius 2P, yeah, probably packing it in the corner doesn't change much in terms of condensation buildup. So it entirely depends on the tent.
2) Same with this one, it entirely depends on the situation and surroundings. Where this is coming from: One night at around 1000m altitude on a ridge in Italy, we built a tent underneath some younger pine trees. In the night, a LOT of mist came as it was rolling over the hill. Between the trees, there was almost no mist, and ~3-5 degrees warmer than 20 meters away, in a clearing. We only had a bit of condensation that night and it was very warm. :)
3) Yeah, this also depends on where you live, your tent and the weather forecast the next day. When thru-hiking, I had a habit of drying everything in the morning (tent, pad, sleeping bag, wet socks, etc.), while having my morning coffee, as soon as the sun came up. It all dries within 10-15 minutes usually. Wet clothing can be attached to the backpack to hang and dry within a few hours. But it depends. In winter, or if it will be raining the next day, the best way to dry clothing is to wear it overnight. I've done it many times and it works. Just be careful if you have a down sleeping bag or if the night is supposed to be very cold. From my experience, hanging it overnight on a line doesn't work very well, it just adds condensation. A better option, as you said, is to lay it all out in the morning in the sun.
4) Useful with colder inflatable pads or with foam mats. When I just started hiking, I went out with a summer inflatable pad in the winter. Doing this helped!
5) Don't use the backpack that I used in this video for this one. I had never tried this tip with a waterproof backpack, and a lot of people pointed out that it would make my feet wet. It did... The same night (a week ago) my wife used her breathable backpack, and she confirmed that they felt warmer than usual. Again, I used this one a lot when I started out and didn't have proper gear to use in winter. Also, good point on the pack being too small! If it's a tight fit, then it will worsen the insulation of the sleeping bag by squishing it.
8) A lot of people pointed out that I should try down booties. I have them on my Black Friday wishlist!
9) I always shake out my water filter very rigorously, so in fact, I do just throw it in the sleeping bag like that :D But yeah, if it is seeping, put it in a Ziploc or something.
10) Solid points! It depends on the environment, and also the design of the tent.
Sorry for this being too long!
Hi Oscar great reply thanks for joining in and taking in the spirit intended. I've also put wet stuff under inflatable sleeping mat to squeeze some out.
Breathable pack? Which breath that's very interesting and yea that would work if so and yup just care not to crush down.
Probably why my vids do badly I waffle 😆 thanks again and happy trails. 😊
when you train in winter camping in norway we where told to strip off and place the wet clothes underneath us. sleep with dry clothes then in the morning put the wet clothes back on. ty for another great vlog
Pleasure thanks Simon absolutely I can understand that I used to put wet stuff under mat that kinda squeezed it it was pretty unpleasant to put on but warm n dry quickly as long as not raining lol thanks for your support great to see you posting so regularly
And angle the pegs 45⁰ away from the tent as to not pull out easy. I have seen so many just go straight down.
Yes pegs 45 degrees or tbh sometimes I'll do 35 degrees lol but definitely never straight or ten 15 degrees . Thanks Nick
Another one ….. for going outside in your down booties just slip-on builders overshoes, they are basically cheap, fragile, elasticated plastic bags … I do it.
I take sealskinz or similar waterproof socks to put on in wet damp shoes if need to pop out or be around camp
Are your bags strong enough or wear out in quick time?
For the second time CZcams has removed my criticism of a foreign company that sells items at unfeasibly low prices.
Anyway, I only wear the overshoes for short duration walks on ground that is mixture of rounded stones and turf.
They are cheap and light enough, take multiple pairs and try them.
Post again... yeah can't make cheap Chinese companies cry lol buy British or American 😉
ALinsdau (polar explorer) says in one of his videos that no one believes him but you can dry items by putting them in your sleeping bag overnight.
Absolutely I'm sure you can if it's not too wet I'd be concerned if wet but damp yes quite likely be brave 😉
I heard someone say put a pack cover over sleeping bag .... I'd suggest not as not breathable might get damp sleeping bag ... jacket or something better if Absolutely needed
Great comment thanks 😊
Socks I've attempted and it worked , but no way I would dry anything in my nice down bag , only in me synthetic snugpak bag 🤣
Maybe if the top of the down bag has a water-repellent coating such as Pertex ?
It'll still breath out if that is your concern? I've definitely put slightly damp very slight mind you it definitely dries in s bag no issues
@@TonyHobbs yes not keen to get down bag wet , I might give it a go and see what happens
CZcams is an amazing place for converting people that camp at 30 feet elevation in a Vango from Go Outdoors into gear and outdoor experts in next to no time.
People are trying way too hard to beat the algorithm and gain CZcams popularity, even if it means handing out duff or absolutely pointless information.
We all learn from making mistakes.
His video is past 300k views lol algorithm definitely works for some ....
@@TonyHobbs Quite a few beat the algorithm by hinting at a bit of nekid on their thumbnails for vids, doesn't make them outdoor experts.
Please don't try that by the way. 😁
Yeah the birds especially do that showing wares off lol
@@TonyHobbs I was thinking more along the lines of Paul Messenger 😁
What's his secret then lol 😆 what's he showing that I'm not that pleases all my subs lol
